Text 1
M: What's the reason for the return?
W: I' ve only worn the dress once and the front pocket already has a hole in it. For such a high price, Iexpected better.(1)
Text 2
W: Did you return the scissors to Mrs. Johnson, Tom?
M: No, I was preparing for the speech competition and I forgot all about it!
W: OK, I' ll go next door right away.(2) Hopefully, your speech will win everybody over.
Text 3
W: Sorry I didn't call when we landed. My battery's completely out of juice.
M: That's OK. You' re here now! Did you manage to eat on the plane?
W: Yes, thanks. But would you mind if I slept for a while?(3)I had to be up at 4:00 a. m.!
Text 4
W: Putting it against the wall gives us more space, but it also blocks the view of the TV.
M: OK, what about here, in the middle of the room? We can seat more guests at dinner parties… Oh, and we could also get a table tennis set(4)
Text 5
W: My friend volunteers at the animal shelter but I can't understand why. I mean, they' re only animals.(5)
M: Animals can't ask for help, but they need it. ①All creatures deserve kindness, no matter what they are.
W: That makes sense. We' re all part of nature.
Text 6
W: ②I just finished tonight's homework.(6)
M: Me too, although I still don't understand why we' re doing it when computers exist!(6)(7)
W: Calligraphy(书法) helps us understand a character's structure and meaning.(6)
M: Perhaps. But surely, we could learn the characters without physically copying them out.(7)
W: Maybe not! ③It's harder to remember a character if you only see ~ it quickly while typing. Besides, as my dad says, it's part of our history and culture. Can't you see its value as an art form?
M: Yeah. But wouldn't touch-typing classes be more practical?(7)
W: I see your point. But handwriting also teaches important life skills. Patience, focus…
Text 7
M: Remember Mrs. Williams from Greenfield High?(8)
W: Of course. She taught me history for three years!

M: Yeah. They' re lucky to have us help them. But I sometimes wonder how we' ll manage when we retire, particularly if neither of us has kids.(9)
W: Society will have to adapt to the aging population.
W: So... why do you deserve one of our graduate positions? (11)
M: Because I share this company’ s vision for creating eco-friendly buildings. (11) I take a lot of my inspiration directly from nature.
W: Indeed. I was impressed with the design concept you handed in with your application —— Desert Hotel. Were you inspired by some sort of insect? (12)
M: Yes, the silver ant. It's covered with reflective hairs which keep it cool in extreme temperatures. My idea used reflective surfaces to a similar effect.(12)
W: Yes. It was both original and beautiful.
M: Thank you! Nature, especially insects, teaches us a lot. My final project at college was inspired by the Eastgate Center in Harare.
W: Oh, yes. It's a shopping center, right?
M: Yes, and an office block too. Its design is also based on a type of insect nest which naturally draws heat up and out, cooling the building without power. So clever!
Text 9
M: Hi Claudia! Can you hear me? (14)
W: Yes, all good! Please excuse me for changing my chat background image. My house is a mess!(14)
M: Ha-ha! Why do you think I' ve come to a coffee shop? Anyway, shall we get started?
W: Yes! So, returning to yesterday's discussion: I'm open to the idea of a four-day working week, but I need to understand exactly how it would work.
M: The key will be to cut out wasted time and unnecessary labor. Firstly, we all know meetings can be a huge time waster. Taking my own personal calendar as an example: In the past month, my shortest meeting lasted about 20 minutes, the longest one went up to two hours, and I spent a total of 30 hours in meetings.(16)
W: That is crazy!
M: Sometimes they' re essential. But emails or shared documents are fine for general updates.
W: What about a“deep work” period each morning? No meetings or messages, just focused work.
M: Good thinking! A“commonly asked questions” section on the website would also free up our support team, too.
W: Great! If you can finish your list of recommendations today and send it over, I’ ll speak to Alex about the money side of things.(17)
M: Perfect. Will do!
Text 10
While her classmates were playing with dolls, young Ayanna Howard preferred robots and watching The Bionic Woman! The TV series centers on a former tennis star who becomes a powerful part-robot person after a life-saving operation. Inspired by this, Howard dreamed of a career to create artificial legs for the disabled. (18) However, her plans to study medicine fell apart upon realizing how much she hated biology!
Luckily, she found a new interest in robotics. After receiving an engineering degree from Brown University in1993, she attended the University of Southern California, achieving both a master's and a Ph. D. in electrical engineering. In 2005, she became an associate professor at Georgia Tech and founded a research group focusing on human-robot interaction. (19) In 2008, her SnoMote robots were internationally recognized for their ability to independently study climate change in remote areas. (20) Later, Howard continued to show how technology can be used to make the world a better place.

Ginny MacColl was 63 when she accepted her daughter's challenge to complete a pull-up. It took nine months to nail it. Now, a decade on, MacColl can pump out 17 of them in a row. MacColl has since competed three times in the reality TV show. She's the oldest person to complete an obstacle, according to Guinness World Records.
“When I grew up, women weren't encouraged to lift weights,” MacColl says. Seeing her daughter, Jessie Graff,a stuntwoman(替身演员) in action, MacColl saw“such strength and grace—— and she had muscles!I realized that the things people had always said about muscles were so wrong. It was a disservice to women.”
MacColl was enrolled in dance lessons by her parents, initially to draw her out of her shell. But in 1974, she landed a part in a Broadway show. She branched out into TV commercials during the 70s and 80s, acting as“a housewife and mum, smiling with my product beside me... Folgers coffee, Jordache jeans...” She got married and had two children, even shooting one commercial three days after giving birth.
But“all good things come to an end”, and MacColl got divorced after 13 years of marriage. However, the biggest obstacle she has overcome in life, MacColl says, is failure itself. She felt like a failure at school, when she and her classmates were lined up in order of their IQ scores, and also when her first marriage ended.
“It took me a while to get over that,” she says. “There's a saying I like to tell myself:‘Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at change.’ So I try to look at failure as a motivator. I will get this. Social media was my way of getting out of the depression. I started posting some of the things I could do.”
She has more than 130,000 followers on Instagram, and has landed parts in films. She has just filmed her next appearance on American Ninja Warrior. MacColl believes she can continue to get stronger into her 80s and 90s.“Muscle is the organ of longevity,” she says.
24. What made MacColl take up pull-ups?
A. She was inspired by her daughter. B. She was eager to become an actress.
C. She wanted to prove her worth as a woman. D. She desired to break a Guinness world record.
25. What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on?
A. The busy life of a housewife. B. The popularity of TV commercials.
C. The golden time in MacColl’ s career. D. MacColl's daily routines as a celebrity.
26. How did MacColl get over her failure?
A. By leaving it as it was. B. By making a mental shift.
C. By turning to social media. D. By drawing lessons from it.
27. What message does MacColl's story convey?
A. All's well that ends well. B. Rome is not built in a day.
C. It's never too late to get stronger. D. It takes courage to change one's life.
A 25. C 26. B 27. C

句式分析:She(主语) branched out into(谓语) TV commercials(宾语) during the 70s and 80s(时间状语), acting as“a housewife and mum, smiling with my product beside me... Folgers coffee, Jordache jeans”(现在分词短语作状语,表伴随)。
根据第四、五段“‘Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at change.’ So I try to look at failure as a motivator”可知,MacColl通过“改变对失败的看法(将其视为动力)”走出低谷,即“思维转变”。故选B。
句式分析:“Change the way you look at things(祈使句1), and(并列连词) the things you look at change(祈使句2).” So(因果连词) I(主语) try to look at(谓语) failure(宾语) as a motivator(宾语补足语)。
C(It's never too late to get stronger)相符。故选C。
句式分析:MacColl believes(谓语) she can continue to get stronger into her 80s and 90s(宾语从句). “Muscle is the organ of longevity,” she says(直接引语,补充说明观点)。
C
When we think about invertebrates(无脊椎动物), most of us picture bees, worms, or perhaps even a jellyfish. But did you know that at least two-thirds of invertebrates work the night shift, meaning many are unlikely to be seen? They use phases of the moon and star light to learn about the world and make vital decisions. Many insects use the faint glow of the moon or stars to tell which way is up when flying in complete darkness.
For centuries, artificial light has been a symbol of progress. Light has shaped human civilization. But while we celebrate its convenience, we often overlook the darker side of our obsession with illumination(照明): light pollution. It's a disruptor of ecosystems, with profound consequences for wildlife, human health and energy consumption.
A 2021 study found that caterpillar populations were 52% lower in areas with street lights. The winter moth is a small but essential species. In early spring its caterpillars provide a critical food source for blue ti t chicks. But light pollution disorients(使迷惑方向) the adult moths, disrupts mating and affects egg-laying, leading to fewer caterpillars. With declining caterpillar numbers, blue ti ts struggle to feed their young.
In one sense, light pollution is relatively easy to fix—— we can simply not turn on the lights and allow the night to be lighted naturally by moonlight. Logically, this is mostly not feasible as lights are meant for the benefit of humans who are often unwilling to give them up. In the absence of turning off the lights, there are other management approaches we can take to lessen their impact. We can limit their number; reduce their intensity and the time they are on.
The extent to which invertebrates have responded to artificial light remains unspecified and it also remains unknown whether they can adapt to additional temporal changes. These changes likely affect individual fitness, so additional studies are needed to determine the selective pressure artificial light produces. An interdisciplinary(跨学科) approach is required to determine broader scale effects of artificial light on wildlife biodiversity and ecosystem health, and to determine relevant strategies.
28. What do we know about the majority of invertebrates?
A. They are active at night. B. They use darkness to hide.
C. They are becoming extinct. D. They are intelligent creatures.
29. What does the author want to illustrate by mentioning caterpillar populations in paragraph 3?
A. The challenge in wildlife conservation. B. The importance of a balanced ecosystem.
C. The urgency of saving species through food. D. The effect of light pollution on the food chain.
30. What does the underlined word“feasible” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Odd. B. Workable. C. Crazy. D. Disturbing.
31. What does the author think of potential management approaches?
A. They are pioneering. B. They are easy to apply.
C. They prove to be effective. D. They call for in-depth research.
A 29. D 30. B 31. D
根据第一段“did you know that at least two-thirds of invertebrates work the night shift, meaning many are unlikely to be seen?” 故选A。
句式分析:did you know(谓语,一般疑问句) that at least two-thirds of invertebrates work the night shift(宾语从句1), meaning many are unlikely to be seen(现在分词短语作状语,补充说明,含宾语从句2)?
根据第三段“A 2021 study found that caterpillar populations were 52% lower in areas with street lights... light pollution disorients the adult moths... leading to fewer caterpillars. With declining caterpillar numbers, blue tits struggle to feed their young”可知,提及毛虫数量是为了“说明光污染对食物链的影响(蛾类受影响→毛虫减少→蓝山雀幼鸟缺食)”。故选D。
句式分析:With declining caterpillar numbers(介词短语作状语,表原因), blue tits(主语) struggle to feed(谓语) their young(宾语)。
根据第四段“we can simply not turn on the lights... Logically, this is mostly not feasible as lights are meant for the benefit of humans who are often unwilling to give them up”可知,“不开灯”的方案“因人类不愿放弃照明而不可行”,“feasible”意为“可行的”,与“workable”同义。故选B。
句式分析:Logically(副词作状语), this(主语) is mostly not feasible(系动词+表语) as lights are meant for the benefit of humans who are often unwilling to give them up(原因状语从句,含who引导的定语从句)。
根据第四段“there are other management approaches we can take to lessen their impact. We can limit their number; reduce their intensity and the time they are on”及第五段“additional studies are needed to determine the selective pressure... An interdisciplinary approach is required to determine broader scale effects”可知,作者认为现有措施“需要深入研究其效果和长期影响”。故选D。
句式分析:additional studies(主语) are needed(谓语,被动语态) to determine the selective pressure artificial light produces(不定式作目的状语,含定语从句修饰pressure)。
D
Even people who have never read Tolstoy are often familiar with his famous opening line to Anna Karenia:“All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” The quote is so well known because it resonates(共鸣) with people's experience, and psychologists have investigated if it might apply to the individual as well as the collective.
A team led by Dr Yanagisawa Kuniaki of Kobe University combined approaches used in psychology and neuroscience by challenging 87 people to imagine specific future events happening to them while lying in an fMRI machine. The sample group was purposely chosen to include people with a mix of future expectations.
The team found participants who were more optimistic showed greater similarities in the patterns of their brain activity in a region involved in future-oriented thinking. Meanwhile, pessimists’ brains produced different maps from each other when given the same stimuli. “We’ re not saying that optimists have identical thoughts about the future,” said Yanadisawa. “Rather, we can say that they appear to think in the same way—— structurally.”
The researchers also found that optimistic people showed bigger differences between brain patterns for emotionally positive and negative events than pessimists did.
Many past studies have revealed benefits to optimism such as better health. But this doesn't necessarily mean that optimism is a good trait and pessimism is a bad one. The research revealed something that might give us pause.Optimism isn't an unquestioned good. Any ancient human population composed entirely of optimists probably died crossing rivers because they convinced themselves there would be no crocodiles or starved because they didn't prepare for bad seasons. This work also hints at the possibility that the individuality that comes with pessimism lends itself to more diverse approaches to problems, with a greater chance that one will succeed than the optimists who all try the same thing.
“The brains of optimists may in a very physical sense share a common concept of the future. But this raises new questions. Is this shared mechanism something they are born with or is it woven in later?” Yanagisawa pondered (沉思). He ultimately believes this work can help us better understand how people relate to each other and what sometimes prevents empathy.
32. Why does the author quote the opening line to Anna Karenina?
A. To recommend Tolstoy's book. B. To introduce the research topic.
C. To share Tolstoy's insights into life. D. To unlock its philosophical wisdom.
33. It can be learnt from the research that when imagining future events, .
A. pessimists tend to be emotional B. optimists have the same thoughts
C. pessimists expect negative outcomes D. optimists think alike in a structural sense
34. What can be implied from paragraph 5?
A. Pessimists are effective problem solvers. B. Pessimists have a better perception of life.
C. Optimism and pessimism are interchangeable. D. Optimism can be damaging when taken to extreme.
35. What is mainly talked about in the last paragraph?
A. Expectations for future study. B. Potential application of the findings.
C. A reasonable doubt about the findings. D. A summary of the previous paragraphs.
B 33. D 34. D 35. A

How to productively learn from the past
The past is a treasure chest filled with learning opportunities for our present and future. 36 Here are seven ways to open up that dirty, unassuming, beat-up old chest to find and use the treasure inside.
Reflect on it. In order to gain value and insight from the past, reflection is a necessary first step. The past opens its insight to us when we stop and look back at what has already occurred. 37 Your entire past, your actions, results, and feelings are all available if you choose to tap into them.
Study it. Studying the past starts to feel like a history course. 38 Rather, it is to place yourself in the narrative (叙述) to understand what was happening and what you can learn from it. Studying in this way makes both the specifics and the context valuable. You also build a mental file of tools and approaches to make better, wiser, more informed decisions.
Replay it. Replaying a situation is different than just reflecting on it. 39 Reimagine it, but with the knowledge and perspective that you now have after the fact. Use this hindsight education to think through what you might do differently or better in the next similar situation. This is like pre-creating positive future moments!
40 There are some things in your past that you regret, feel guilty about, or wish you would have done differently. The fact is, however badly you feel, however desperately wish you could change it, it's in the past. The page has turned. This may mean you have to forgive others or yourself. Let go of pain or guilt and keep the learning.
A. Make use of it.
B. Release yourself from it.
C. But only if we look inside.
D. Try walking back through the situation.
E. The treasure is there, but you must look for it.
F. Reflection knows no time period and no limitations.
G. Your goal isn't to pass a test or hold a bunch of dates in your head.

Every student at Oakridge High knew that Michael was struggling. His family had recently moved to a smaller apartment across town after his father was laid off from work. The financial pressures at home cast a shadow over everything he did.
Each morning, he arrived at Oakridge High wearing the same faded jeans and worn-out sneakers. Where he once participated eagerly in class discussions, he now sat in the back row, hoping to escape notice. He found himself staring blankly at the whiteboard, unable to focus. The numbers blurred together as worries about his family's situation crowded his mind.
Mr. Evans, a teacher with twenty years of experience, recognized the signs immediately. After class, he askedMichael to stay for a moment. “I know you' re going through a difficult time,” Mr. Evans said, his voice filled with genuine concern. “But remember this: difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations. The struggle you' re facing today is developing the strength you need for tomorrow.” He placed a reassuring hand on Michael's shoulder. “This temporary setback doesn't define you—— it's preparing you. I' ve seen your potential, and I believe in you even when you might not believe in yourself.”
Their after-school sessions became regular. He taught Michael how to break down complex problems into manageable steps——a strategy that applied not just to mathematics but to life's challenges as well. Most importantly,he consistently emphasized Michael’ s capabilities, rebuilding the confidence that had been eroded(侵蚀) by recent difficulties.
As weeks passed, Michael’ s performance began to improve dramatically. He started arriving early for their sessions, often with questions prepared in advance. The frustration that once clouded his expression was replaced by determination. In class, he began raising his hand again, offering solutions to problems that challenged other students.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1: The true test came with the annual mathematics competition.

The true test came with the annual mathematics competition. The mathematics competition was intense, with the brightest students from across the district competing. Michael focused intently, recalling Mr. Evans's strategies as he solved each problem. When the results were announced, he felt a surge of disbelief and joy upon hearing his name called for second place. Walking to the stage to receive his certificate, he saw Mr. Evans applauding proudly in the audience, giving him a thumbs-up. That moment of recognition meant more to Michael than the award itself.
After the award presentation, Michael went to Mr. Evans's office. He found Mr. Evans was buried in grading students’ assignments. He approached his teacher, holding the certificate with visible emotion. “Thank you for everything, sir,” Michael said sincerely. Mr. Evans responded with a warm smile, placing a hand on his shoulder.“You earned this through your own determination,” he replied quietly. “Remember that challenges are merely opportunities in disguise.” The brief exchange conveyed profound gratitude and pride, capturing the essence of their special student-teacher bond.
