Passage 1
阅读下面的短文,简略回答问题
If you have a chance to learn by yourself, what might you do? Perhaps you choose to practice football skills; you would prefer to discuss something together; and you might just read. This is the most important thing of “unschooling”. It is also known as “natural learning” or “independent learning”.
Know More Schooling is education that children receive at school.
Home schooling is the practice of education that children learn at home with a parent or a tutor.
Unschooling is an educational practice that allows children to decide how, what and where they want to learn.
For this kind of educational practice, people think differently. Here are their comments (意见).
Agree
Disagree
Independent learning teaches children to be responsible for themselves. With no teacher around, children must manage themselves, and this is a really important skill for later life.
Unschooling requires parents’ support and attention. They need to create a learning space that excites children and reminds them of their daily routines.
Unschooling allows children to learn what they are really interested in. If learning is enjoyable, it’s more successful.
Teachers can push children to learn what they don’t enjoy but can be important later in life.
Very young children learn in a natural way. Without being taught, they know colors and voices, and they learn smiling and walking. Why shouldn’t people continue to learn like this?
Unschooling sounds too good to be true. It can be helpful when children are very young. But it puts too much pressure on children because they can learn difficult subjects easily only with teachers’ help.
Unschooling gives children more time for sports, volunteering and museum or park visits. They may meet different people who share their interests.
Unschooling happens at home, so children could have less contact with others at their age. This means they could end up becoming shy.
When deciding how you are going to learn, it’s necessary to think about which one works. Choose what is suitable for you and what can have a positive influence on your growth.
1.What is the most important thing of unschooling?
2.Whose support and attention do children need when they experience unschooling?
3.How can children become successful in learning?
4.Why are children under too much pressure from unschooling?
5.If possible, what kind of educational practice would you like to choose? Why?
Passage 2
Mobile phones have become a problem for some middle schools. In a middle school in Australia, students are not allowed to carry mobile phones during school hours.
Mary Bluett, an official, said some schools had tried to ban (禁止) mobile phones. Some parents felt unhappy because they couldn’t get in touch with their children.
Many teachers said students should not have mobile phones at school, but if there was a good reason, they could leave their phones at school office. They said there were many reasons why the students should not have mobile phones at school. For example, they were easy to lose and were a distraction (分心的事) from studies. Teachers also said that sometimes students might use phone messages to cheat during exams.
Many people say that they understand why parents would want their children to have phones, but they think schools should let the students know when they can use their mobile phones.
1.When are the students not allowed to carry mobile phones in Australia?
2.How did parents feel when they couldn’t get in touch with their children?
3.Why did many teachers say that students should not have mobile phones at school?
4.Do you think that students should have mobile phones at school? Why or why not? (Write 30 words or more)
Passage 3
Before moving to Xiamen in 1988, the American man William Brown had already lived in over 30 cities around the world. At that time, he had no thought that he would spend the rest of his life in Xiamen and enjoyed his life there so much.
Now as a professor of management at Xiamen University, William has been teaching business studies since 1989.
In 1988, William arrived in Xiamen with his family—his wife and two sons. Xiamen in the 1980s was not a nice place to live in. People burned coal and the air was polluted. Besides, the electricity was awful. William said what made him stay in Xiamen was the people there.
“In the 1980s, Chinese people used food coupons (粮票) to get meat, vegetables and oil.” But foreigners had no such tickets, and we could not use cash, either,” William said. “Many Chinese teachers sold their tickets to me, not to make money, but to offer a little kind help to a foreigner.”
“During such festivals as the Spring Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Chinese teachers would invite my family to their homes. Even though they were not rich, they shared everything with us. Just once a year later, I decided to live here permanently (永久地).”
Looking back, William said the improvements in Xiamen were great. “I knew the difficult time would pass, but I didn’t expect that the city would improve so fast. The city now has good transportation and wonderful nightlife similar to Las Vegas.”
Over the past years, William has taken his family travelling across China. They are surprised at the variety of China’s natural beauty. But in William’s eyes, nowhere is more beautiful than his hometown in China—Xiamen.
Once, William made a speech in Xiamen Tourism Festival. When he was asked to say something to this city, “________” William said proudly.
1.William Brown moved to Xiamen in 1988, didn’t he?
2.What is William Brown’s job in Xiamen?
3.How could people get meat, vegetables and oil in 1980s China?
4.What made William decide to stay in Xiamen permanently?
5.How is the city Xiamen now in William Brown’s eyes?
6.What can probably be filled in the blank?
Passage 4
Drones (无人驾驶飞机) can do lots of things for people, including taking pictures from the sky and watching wild animals. Now these small flying robots begin to change the way of farming.
Looking for sick plants. Drones can find bacteria (细菌) that are harmful to plants in the air from a few kilometers away. Farmers can check the drones’ air samples (样本) and try to find ways to protect their plants before the bacteria get to them.
Counting cows. When flying over cows, drones can follow up the cows and find out which fences need fixing. There are also special cameras on drones. They can help farmers look for animals that could harm their cows.
Water watch. After watering the fields, we can often see some places may dry out faster than others. Other places might not get water at all. Drones can look over the field and make a 3D map. Using the map, farmers can find out which parts of a field are dry or need improvement.
Spraying pesticide (喷洒农药). Different parts of a field might have different heights. Drones can check for this when flying above the land. Then, they change their height so that they can spray the correct amount of pesticide over each part of the field. This is more useful than traditional pesticide spraying. Drones can finish spraying a field much faster than with traditional machines.
Although drones can do a lot of things for people, drones still face great challenges and disadvantages. One of the biggest disadvantages is that they are affected by the weather.
1.What can drones do to help the sick plants?
2.What are on the drones that help farmers look for animals?
3.What can the farmers do by using the 3D map?
4.How many ways of farming do the drones change according to the text?
5.Do you like drones? Why or why not?
Passage 5
Kunqu Opera, one of the oldest traditional opera forms in China, was born in Kunshan, Suzhou. It is famous for its special patterns and has had a big influence on more recent forms of opera, such as Peking Opera.
Kunqu Opera has faced competition from popular culture in China. And at the beginning of the 21st century, Kunqu Opera faced a decline (衰落). Kunqu Opera performers retired (退休); audiences (观众) got old and fewer young people wanted to learn and enjoy the ancient art.
But in 2008, Kunqu Opera was added to Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (《人类非遗代表名录》). This not only brought Kunqu Opera to international attention, but also made Kunqu Opera popular again at home.
A “youth version (青春版)” of The Peony Pavilion (《牡丹亭》), created by the Suzhou Kunqu Opera Theater and the famous writer Bai Xianyong, is considered another important move in the development of the art form. And it has been well received since it was performed for the first time around 20 years ago. With over 400 performances across China, as well as in countries such as the UK and the US, it has had about 800,000 audiences. As the play was performed at universities, Kunqu Opera saw a big increase in popularity, especially among young people.

2.What made Kunqu Opera get international attention?
3.Who created the “youth version” of The Peony Pavilion?
4.What happened as the play was performed at universities?
5.What are the reasons for Kunqu Opera’s decline? (写出两点即可)

The folk art form, kuaiban, which has a long history, can be performed by a group or a single person. With one or two pairs of bamboo clappers—a kind of traditional Chinese musical instrument in their hands, the performers tell stories in the local dialect (方言). These stories are usually folk tales or about social life.
Recently, Liu Jiming and Wan Yifu made and shared three short videos by using kuaiban which were viewed about 4 million times. As a result, Liu and Wan have gained more than 1 million followers on the Internet. They’ve created many new works to raise people’s awareness. Some of their works are about the danger of drunken driving and food safety. They also write stories to show respect to people who make contributions, such as traffic policemen.
According to Liu and Wan, people can understand kuaiban pieces without difficulty. The stories told in kuaiban pieces are close to people’s daily lives. Thus, they consider that it is a fun way to introduce the Chinese folk culture through kuaiban. And what matters to them is that both young people and old people begin to know the charm of the art form, kuaiban, which may not be paid much attention to, compared to other traditional art forms.
Folk art forms, like xiangsheng, pingshu and kuaiban, share something in common. These traditional art forms show the beauty and value of traditional Chinese culture so they should be known by more people and get to more areas. One way to find happiness within you is to show your appreciation (感激) to others. Showing appreciation gives happiness to others. At the same time, we can receive happiness in return by writing a letter of appreciation and for the reply we get.
Often, maybe you push yourself hard by telling yourself you could have done things better. Have a look at your life and think about what you have achieved today. So take 5 minutes right now to write down what you have achieved in life and what you are proud of.
Have you ever kept a diary? Sometimes writing things down will give you clear thinking and allow you to let go of things. When you write in a diary, you have the ability to express yourself as you truly would like to be.

Every school has its own set of rules to keep students disciplined (守纪律的). The rules change from one school to another. Some schools are much stricter than others. There are also some rules that look strange or funny to us. Here are some funny school rules:
Japan: Most schools demand that students wear uniforms. But many Japanese schools even regulate (规定) the color of underwear! They also demand that girls’ white socks be folded in a certain way and boys’ heads be shaved (刮过的). Other Japanese schools tell students that they can not date (约会), go to the movies, leave home after sunset or play video games without permission.
The USA: For safety at USA schools, students must have a pair of indoor shoes to change into at school every day. Because this makes sure students won’t fall over on the slippery floors and keeps the schools clean.
Britain: Strange hairstyles are not allowed in some British schools. But they might allow students to wear certain hairstyles during the World Cup. Two students had a special design shaved into their hair during the World Cup. But they were not accepted by their school after that because the school said the rules had changed since then.

Passage 5
阅读下列短文,根据短文中的信息完成文后表格。
OK, so imagine you’ve thought of a product to make and sell—a game, or an app, or some clothes for example. You know you can sell millions of them, but first of all, you must give the product a name—a brand name. And that may not be as easy as you think.
The brand name is the thing that makes your product stand out from all the others. Businesses spend a lot of time thinking about brand names; when the name has been picked, it’s very difficult to change, so companies have to get it right first time.
So how do you choose a name? A brand name should be special, memorable and easy to understand. It should create some kind of emotional connection with people who buy the product—the target (目标) market. Some companies use the family name. When Henry Ford started making cars, he just called the company Ford. Some companies use wordplay. It’s a common way for naming apps, for example WhatsApp (from the English expression What’s up? As they pronounce similarly). But what do you have to be careful about? Well, you shouldn’t choose a name that may not work in certain countries or cultures. Many years ago, a car company produced a new car that they called Nova. They thought it suggested something nice and new, but in Spanish it can be read as no va (“it doesn’t go”). Not a good name for a car in Spain!
These days, the choice of brand name is quite important if your product is aimed at teenage market. A teacher in an American high school said, “Teenagers won’t buy something that’s almost the same or cheaper—simply because they feel they must wear something with the right logo.”
Companies know that the name isn’t everything—the product itself has to be good, of course—it is the most important part of the whole package.

Since the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the Zigong Lantern Festival has shown the wisdom and culture of people in Zigong, Sichuan Province. In 2008, the festival became a national-level intangible cultural heritage.
Different kinds of beautiful lanterns can be seen during the festival. Some small lanterns are finely made. Some large ones can be as tall as 20 meters. On the lanterns, you can find Chinese zodiac (生肖), astronauts and so on. Zigong Lanterns mix sound, light and movement in just one lantern. This sets them apart from lanterns in other places.
This year, the Zigong Lantern Festival started on January 29th. It had 1.15 million visits by March 17. Zigong lantern festivals have gone to more than 500 cities in China and more than 80 countries around the world.
Wan Songtao learned to make Zigong lanterns from his father. When he was a teenager, he spent every summer and winter vacations learning lantern-making. To get better at designing (设计), Wan studied fine art in college. Making a large lantern for an exhibition takes over 15 steps. One of the most important parts is the first step—designing. “We used to design the lanterns all by ourselves,” said Wan. “Now we also use AI for good ideas.” Besides AI, other technologies are also helpful.
This year, Wan’s favorite work is a sundial (日晷). “The success of Zigong lanterns comes from teamwork,” he said. “The sundial is the work of over 80 Zigong lantern makers as well as a group of engineers. It took us over 4,000 hours to make it and bring it to the park.”
Zigong Lanterns shape the colorful world with great ideas and cool technology. They are now a name card for our hometown, as well as our motherland,” said Wan.

Qingxu County in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, has been a main production area for aged vinegar since ancient times. The aged vinegar made there was famous far and wide and was carried by Shanxi businessmen during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
The production process, which has a history of 3000 years, must go through at least five steps. The newly-made vinegar has a light color, but as the years go by, it becomes thicker and darker. The aging process (陈化过程) lasts at least one year, which is where the name “aged vinegar” comes from.
To this day, the work is still mostly done by hand. Inside a local workshop in Qingxu, which is built in ancient style, workers dressed in Ming Dynasty clothing are busy performing traditional vinegar brewing tasks. “They are not actors, but real workers,” says Mr. Zhang, manager of the workshop. “With the fast development of our company, our customers have shown increasing interest in knowing how the aged vinegar is made as well as its cultural background.”
What’s more, to meet high level of quality, new technology and skills have been added to the production process. In the workshop, 190 fermentation tanks (发酵罐) are lined up like soldiers. “Both fermentation and smoking (熏) tasks can be achieved without human help. We even use 5G technology for control,” Mr. Zhang adds. “While the vinegar is fermented by machine, it still goes through the traditional aging process, so its taste remains the same.”
Still, in recent years, the vinegar industry in Qingxu has been made suitable for the times. While it continues its tradition, it has welcomed new ideas, such as ice cream with vinegar and tangyuan with vinegar fillings.

Photography, a word from two Greek words—“photos” meaning light, and “graphe” meaning to write or draw, is a way of making pictures. A camera serves as a tool for taking photos by focusing reflected light from objects or scenes onto film or a digital chip which can be processed into a photo.
The idea of taking photos has been around for centuries. However, it wasn’t until 1826 that the first photo was made by an inventor who covered a metal plate with light-sensitive (感光的) chemicals and allowed light onto it through a camera lens. As time went by, photographers used different materials or ways to record an imago (图像).
The first photographers were inventors, scientists and artists. Using early cameras wasn’t easy for them, because it took long to take photos, and the plates had to be processed right away so that the image wouldn’t be lost.
By the 1808, photographers started to use film instead. The film not only let them take many photos on one roll but also made cameras take up less space and become lighter and even cheaper than the early ones. As a result, many people bought the film cameras and took up photography as a hobby.
In the 1900s, more people started taking photos, but few processed their own film because it was expensive to buy the equipment and chemicals or set up a darkroom. However, although there were several processing steps and it took a long time to get pictures, some people did process their own film and today there are still photographers who enjoy taking photos on film and process it themselves.
At the end of the 20th century, digital cameras were first used. Unlike film cameras, a digital camera records the image electronically as digital information instead of recording chemically on film. People prefer using digital cameras to the film ones because they are smaller and easier to use, letting people see pictures at once which can be deleted or changed later with a computer program.
Today, almost all smartphones have cameras built into them. What will the future photography be like? Perhaps time can tell.

Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle
Once upon a time in Athens, there was a wise man named Socrates. He had a big belly and a bigger brain. Socrates loved to ask questions to help people think deeper. He was like a superhero with a power of making people smarter just by talking to them.
One day, a young man named Plato came to Socrates. Plato was not just any young man. He was strong and could run fast, and he could have been a great athlete. But instead, he wanted to be wise like Socrates. So, he became Socrates’ student, and they would walk around the city, talking about life, the universe, and everything.
Plato was a good student, and he learned a lot from Socrates. But Socrates was getting older, and one sad day, he had to leave this world. Plato was very sad, but he remembered all the things Socrates taught him.
After Socrates was gone, Plato started his own school, called the Academy. It was like a big clubhouse where people could come and learn and ask questions, just like Socrates did. Plato became a great teacher, and he wrote many stories about his talks with Socrates.
Now, there was another young man named Aristotle. He was a bit like Plato when he was young. Aristotle loved learning, and he came to study under Plato. He always asked questions and wanted to know how things worked.
Aristotle studied under Plato for many years, and he became very smart. But he didn’t just copy what Plato said. He thought for himself and came up with new ideas about philosophy (哲学). He said that we can learn a lot by looking at the world around us, not just by thinking about it.
So, Socrates taught Plato, and Plato taught Aristotle. They were like a team of wisdom passing the torch (火炬) of knowledge from one to another.

Lanterns have been part of Chinese culture for centuries and play an important part in many celebrations. In ancient times, there were mainly three kinds of lanterns:
Palace lantern (宫灯)
It was mainly used in palaces in ancient times. When making palace lanterns, fine wood was used. The palace lanterns were covered with silk or glass. Different kinds of pictures were drawn on the covers. These lanterns were not only used as lights but also as decorations (装饰) in palaces.
Gauze lantern (纱灯)
Less expensive bamboo and gauze were used to cover the lantern. Red gauze was used when making them. In Chinese culture, red lanterns are symbols of happiness. So red lanterns are always hung on important festivals such as Lantern Festival, Spring Festival and National Day in parks or along main streets. In some famous Chinatowns (唐人街) abroad, you can see red lanterns all the year round. They have become a symbol of Chinese culture worldwide.
Shadow-picture lantern (走马灯)
It was usually used for amusement. The shape was much like that of the palace lanterns. There were two layers (层) of covers and pictures were drawn on the inside layer. When the candle was lit (被点燃), the heat caused a paper wheel inside the lantern to turn around, so that moving pictures appeared on the outside cover.
Now more kinds of lanterns appear in festivals besides the traditional ones. More modern technology is used on making lanterns. The shapes of the modern lanterns have changed a lot too.

September 1st is World Letter Writing Day. The holiday was created to keep the art of letter writing alive in our high-technology age.
For a long time, letter writing used to be the primary means (方法) of long-distance communication. However, the appearance of modern means of communication, such as e-mail and text messages, has made letter writing a less popular activity. Few people would like to take the time to sit down and write a letter carefully now.
Even though new technologies have provided us with much faster ways to communicate, letter writing is still important for some reasons. Writing a letter to someone shows that we care about them a lot, because we take the time and effort (努力) to do something people seldom do these days. Handwriting is also a skill we shouldn’t give up, because writing by hand stimulates (刺激) our brain in a different way than typing (打字) and then improves our language processing and reading skills. Another reason is that writing a letter makes us have to pay attention to what we are writing. Far too often, we hurriedly send texts and e-mails without thinking about the influence our words may have on the person we are writing to. With a handwritten letter, we are forced to be more careful with the words we choose.
So, how can we celebrate this day? The best way is to write a letter to someone. It could be a friend or a relative who lives miles away, or someone we have lost touch with over time. Of course, we can also learn the correct way to write a handwritten letter, or just read some famous letters. Whatever we do, we should know that letter writing is still worthwhile (值得做的).
Celebrations:
* Practice writing a letter to someone.
* Learn to write a handwritten letter correctly.
* Read some famous letters.
Reminder: 5 we celebrate it, we should know letter writing is worthwhile.

Passage 1
In today’s world we find ourselves communicating more through online channels such as messaging, social media and video calls. There are certain situations where online communication is necessary but others where we choose a virtual (虚拟的) conversation over a real-life one. Is online communication preferable in today’s world?
To begin with, I’d like to talk about the advantages (优点) of online communication. Firstly, online communication makes it possible to communicate with people in different places around the world. This has many advantages in the workplace as meetings can take place through video conferencing (视频会议) among companies in Stockholm, San Francisco and Shanghai without the need for long and time-consuming (耗费时间的) business trips.
What’s more, it provides chances for families and friends who are far away from each other to keep in touch every day. Another advantage is that online communication gives us the choice of replying quickly and allows us to edit (编辑) and improve our message.
On the other hand, there are several disadvantages of online communication. Some experts are worried that having no face-to-face communication gets in the way of the development of important social skills. Also, the very nature of conversation is different in the virtual world. If short pieces of dialogue with emoticons (表情符号) replace longer direct conversation with emotions expressed on real faces, we’re running the risk of losing the art of real conversation.
On balance, I believe that online communication brings us advantages in today’s society. However, we should take care not to look down on the advantages of face-to-face dialogue.
1.Online communication makes it possible to people in different places around the world.
2.Families and friends staying far away from each other have chances to through online communication.
3.How many advantages of online communication are mentioned in the passage?
4.What will happen if there is no face-to-face communication?
5.Do you like online communication? Why or why not?
Passage 2
Picture this: Students pass their schoolwork through different hands, from their group leader to the class representative (课代表) and finally to the teacher. It might not sound too difficult, but sometimes it can go wrong and take a lot of time.
To deal with this problem, Zhang Xirui from Shenzhen Gezhi Academy in Guangdong came up with a useful tool—a smart homework collection robot.
The robot uses radio frequency identification (RFID, 射频识别) technology—a reader and a special tag (标签) that can share information without touching each other. This way, it can help find and know what it is looking for. Each student’s notebook has a special RFID tag with their name and the subject on it. Students only need to place their notebooks on the robot, and the machine “sees” the notebook, reads its tag and takes it out of the list. “Teachers can check who hasn’t turned in homework by connecting their phones with the robot through Wi-Fi,” the boy said.
Now, Zhang is planning to develop a third-generation robot and hopes to use new technology to read lots of RFID tags from far away. That means if you stick a special tag on your notebook, the robot can read the information from lots of notebooks at once. Zhang believes that this is the key to how AI can make life easier for us.
Zhang dreams of becoming a scientist when he grows up. “I have tried making model airplanes and other scientific and creative projects. Inventing has brought me joy and happiness,” he said.

Before moving to Xiamen in 1988, the American man William Brown had already lived in over 30 cities around the world. At that time, he had no thought that he would spend the rest of his life in Xiamen and enjoyed his life there so much.

Passage 1
根据短文内容,完成图表中所缺信息。

Passage 2
读下面短文,根据其内容,完成图表中所缺的信息。

* Read some famous letters.
