Here is a 5R rule for you. Reduce If you want to reduce waste, you should use your brain (脑子). Just buy what you need when shopping. Make good use of everything and don’t waste anything. Reducing waste is a good way to protect the environment. Reuse You should always think of reusing the usable things before throwing them out. Give your old clothes you do not use or the ones which are too small to others. You may pass on such clothes to young brothers or sisters. Recycle Bottles, cans and paper can easily be recycled, and many other things can be recycled too. By doing so we can save lots of time and money. So you see, “Recover” is using the things that can be used. Repair If one of the legs of your table is broken, you can repair it instead of throwing it away. It was like Amazon but with a twist: When the milk was gone, the “milkman” would pick up the old bottles when bringing more milk. The old bottles would be cleaned and used again. Leaders at one company think we should go back to this “milkman model,” but not just for milk. TerraCycle is starting a service called Loop. It won’t use disposable containers. Things like food, shampoo, laundry products, and diapers will be delivered in reusable containers. You’ll put empty containers by your door. They’ll then be picked up, washed, and refilled. This could reduce the amount of packaging that’s made for goods. Less packaging equals less garbage. Tom Szaky is head of TerraCycle. “Loop is about the future. [We believe that] garbage shouldn’t exist,” he said. For this to work, other companies will need to do their part. Loop is working with companies like Nestlé, Procter & Gamble, and PepsiCo. Loop will deliver their products in reusable containers. And it’ll take care of the pickup and cleanup. “Our goal is that by 2030, all of our packaging will be reusable or recyclable,” said Virginie Helias, a leader at Procter & Gamble. How will the company do it? Pantene shampoo will come in a “lightweight-[metal] pump container,” Helias said. “Tide in the U.S. will come in a stainless-steel bottle…. Crest mouthwash will come in a glass bottle.” Environmental group Greenpeace supports Loop. But Greenpeace leaders aren’t sure Loop will really help. “What [this] will mean for the environment depends on whether [companies] are actually ready to change,” said Jennifer Morgan. Morgan is head of Greenpeace International. She said that most of the businesses working with Loop are still producing single-use plastic. (Ever notice all the plastic packaging in your supermarket?) She wondered if companies were working with Loop just to look good. But TerraCycle leaders hope that people use Loop. Lots of people. That would tell companies that disposables have to go. 16.What is the main purpose of Loop? A.To reduce garbage. B.To make more money. C.To provide better service. D.To sell more products. 17.What does the underlined word “disposable” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A.可重复使用的 B.可回收的 C.一次性的 D.环保的 18.What can we know about Pantene shampoo from the passage? A.It will be sold in a paper box. B.It will come in a plastic container. C.It will be delivered in a lightweight metal pump container. D.It will be produced in a stainless-steel bottle. 19.According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE? A.All the companies are willing to change. B.There will be no garbage in the future. C.Loop will be very popular in the future. D.Some companies may not be really ready to change. 20.What can we infer from the last paragraph? A.People will support Loop. B.Loop will fail in the end. C.More companies will join Loop. D.Loop needs to make some changes. C Nowadays the pollution of the sea is becoming an increasingly serious problem. How can we reduce the pollution in the sea and make the underwater environment better? Scientists in Norway have invented an underwater robot, which can help a lot. The robot is 45 kg in weight and uses special cameras to get 3D pictures. It can discover different kinds of pollution at the bottom of the sea. It will help clean-up teams find the areas, where there is rubbish and then they can spend most of their time and money removing the most harmful materials. The researchers (研究员) put their work to the test in a bay (海湾) in the city of Bergen. First, the robot swam up and down two meters above the seabed, collecting information. Then a computer turned the information into a map, which showed different rubbish materials in different colors. Thousands of objects were discovered in the bay, including bottles, metals, plastics, etc. “Bergen is a place where different industries come together, and the city is quite old, so there’s a huge amount of rubbish,” said Trygve Olav Fossum, one of the researchers. “We think the rubbish in the bay weighs 150 tons to 300 tons.” It is not always possible to remove everything. Some things are more harmful so it’s more important to clear them from the sea. “Glass isn’t really polluting the sea,” said Fossum. “So if you know there’s an area with a lot of glass, you don’t need to worry much about that and you can pay more attention to the things that are putting heavy metals into the environment.” The maps will be used to help the clean-up teams locate (定位) the most harmful materials so that they can remove them first. Thanks to the development of the science and technology, the underwater environment can be improved a lot. As well as helping to deal with pollution, the robot can also show where creatures like starfish are on the seabed. 21.How does the writer start the passage? A.Listing plans. B.Showing steps. C.Raising a problem. D.Giving suggestions. 22.What can the robot do? ①take pictures  ②swim underwater  ③make a map  ④remove rubbish  ⑤discover pollution A.①②⑤ B.①②③ C.②③④ D.②③⑤ 23.What can we learn from paragraph 3? D.People shouldn't throw harmful materials into the sea. 24.Why did the writer take glass for example in Paragraph 4? A.To show it is always possible to remove everything. B.To explain how serious the water pollution is in the bay. C.To tell us the most harmful things should be removed first. D.To call on clean-up teams to pay more attention to removing glass. 25.What’s the best title for the passage? One of these is the Ocean Cleanup. It is run by a young man from the Netherlands. 28 Most of it is plastic. Over 100 million sea animals die each year from being injured by plastic, such as sea turtles, dolphins, and seabirds. 29 Every year, over 15 billion trees are cut down around the world to make room for raising animals, growing crops, and humans. A Chinese NGO—the China Green Foundation—is working to change this by planting millions of trees. 30 However, through small everyday changes, such as recycling our waste, we can bring about plenty of changes to our world. A.However, it is not just our oceans that are influenced B.Not all of us can make such large contributions (贡献). C.What can you do on that day? Held on April 22 every year, Earth Day will turn 52 years old this year. It was created by US politician Gaylord Nelson. 26 His idea was so successful that more than 20 million people went to Earth Day events on April 22, 1970. Back then, it helped to bring the laws about clean air and water to the US. 27 Luckily, many young people and their non-government organizations (NGOs) have risen to make positive changes. Recover When you buy a box of apples, there may be a few rotten (腐烂的) apples. You could cut off the rotten parts and eat the good parts. In this way you are recovering the eatable parts of food.
