After being evacuated()from her Florida home following Hurricane Michael,Amber Gee was
attempting to get an idea of the destruction left behind when she discovered a sign of trouble. As
reported by ABC News,Gee was using NOAA's interactive aerial map(交互式航拍地图)to check the
damage done to her and her family's homes when she spotted the word "H-E-L-P"spelled out in the
yard.
The NOAA website allows those impacted in the hurricane to get a look at specific streets or homes
by zooming in on(用变焦距镜头拉近)aerial imagery of the affected area.According to ABC News,Gee
was looking at one of these photos when she noticed a cry for help spelled out in wood in the front yard
of her grandmother's Bay County home.
Though her grandmother had evacuated, several other family members, including Gee's uncle and
his wife,had stayed behind.After spotting the message,Gee alerted(向…报警)Bay County
Emergency Services, who went to the house and rescued those who were trapped in the residence.
"Apparently, they had to cut through a lot of downed trees to get there,"Gee told ABC News. Her
uncle,Ernest, had reportedly used wood from one of those trees to spell out the message.
After the rescue,Bay County Emergency Services posted the incident on their Facebook page,
writing,"This is an incredible story of how people are working together in this situation.Someone from
another county was using the mapping app to check property in rural Bay County and noticed the word
"help'spelled out in the grass in wood. That person immediately contacted us and sent the picture and
we dispatched emergency workers."
Meanwhile,Gee says she is thankful that she was able to use the mapping tool to get her family to
safety."The hurricane has turned everything upside down everywhere. Some were more fortunate than
others.I'm just happy that everybody is safe and sound and, hopefully, soon we will all get through this
together and recover from this storm, she said.

Dear Max,
It must seem a little odd to get a letter from your own mother whom you see every day,but I hope
you will read this and take what I have to say seriously.
I bought you a phone for your 12th birthday because you wanted one so much, and all your friends
have one.I know you love your phone, but I wonder whether you are aware of just how much you use it.
From my perspective,it seems that you are constantly checking your phone for notifications()
or messages. You even do this when we're having a family meal in a restaurant or when I'm talking to
you.You may not realise this, but whenever you feel even slightly bored, you check your phone. You
never seem to relax. You're constantly on alert, and I don't think this is very good for you.We all need to
switch it off every now and then. And if I ask you to leave your phone at home when we go out,you sulk
(生气)and get upset, almost as if you're suffering withdrawal symptoms(戒断症状).It's like your
phone is a drug.
I have tried to talk to you about this, but whenever I ask you to put down your phone and look at
me,you say "in a minute".Unfortunately,"in a minute"never comes,and we never talk.I can't actually
remember the last time we had a proper face-to-face conversation.I even have to message you to let you
know dinner is on the table! That's why I decided to put my concerns in a letter to you.
Please don't think I am writing this letter to punish you or to nag()you.I know you are a good
boy.I don't think you want to hurt me or be rude intentionally. However,I recently heard about
something called "nomophobia"the fear of being without a phone. It's a real illness and I'm worried
whether you have it.I really think it would be a good idea if we all went to see an addiction expert
together so we can all have a discussion about this serious problem.I know you won't want to,but I'm
very concerned about you. Please take some time to think about what I have written. Then let's talk.

There are two ways that I often hear the term "hobbyist"being thrown around. The first is by
professional woodworkers and is usually in a disparaging (tone, like "a hobbyist couldn't
possibly be as good, fast, and talented as a pro".The other way is by hobbyists themselves and having a
beginning like the words "I'm just a...".In either case,I don't understand why this is.
To my way of thinking, being a qualified and skilled woodworker can mean that you are a slave to
the hard work.I've done the work and it isn't always fun and pretty. It's not often that you get to do the
kind of woodworking that you want and often you are left begging to be paid for the work that you do
complete. The other thing to keep in mind that even the most successful furniture makers often
supplement their incomes with teaching and writing.Making woodworking courses is well-paid.
A few years ago I turned furniture making into a hobby, and this ended up being the best decision I
could have made for my overall welling-being.For some time I was starting to dislike woodworking
because of all the other stuff I mentioned earlier.Add more pressure to the situation by having a young
family and wanting to contribute to the household income, and the stress wasn't good.Getting a job
outside of furniture making allowed me the freedom to build what I wanted, when I wanted.I've stayed
in the woodworking industry all these years, but what I make in my hobbyist shop simply brings in some
money to help feed a healthy tool addiction.
So please don't be ashamed of your hobbyist name.Hobbyists get to explore as many aspects of the
craft as they want. They don't have the pressure of putting food on the table and paying the rent,so they
can do whatever they want..No rabbit holes(未知的世界)are off limits for the hobbyist because in the
end it's just your personal time and some materials. So,go ahead,be a proud hobbyist, and hold your
chest out with pride.
1.According to the passage, why do professionals sometimes look down upon hobbyists?(no more than

They say to find out what you really want,go back to when you were a child.
When I was a kid,I really wanted to be a painter, but I was never great at it.I was discouraged,
because in art classes my paintings were never the most beautiful. In the third grade,we were given a
project to create a portrait.I used the skills and tips we were all taught in class. After we were done,we
presented our portraits. We stood in front of the class and explained our technique.I remember looking at
other portraits thinking,"We were given the same skills, why do theirs look so professional and mine
looks so amateur?”
But I still really enjoyed painting because it's a forgiving art.If I don't like what I've put on paper,
I can paint over it.I can mix colors and make new ones. Also,I can release some creative juices, use what
has inspired me and allow that to pour out of me in a way I may not have imagined.
But because I have always wanted to paint beautiful pictures,I just decided to change what beauty
looked like.I changed what beauty meant to me.
Throughout school, they taught us about Picasso,Van Gogh and Leonardo da Vinci who were
always painting whatever was in front of them and around them. But that's not what I saw around me.
Then I learned about Basquiat, who inspired me to paint abstract pictures.I paint when I'm moved,
and I am often moved by what's natural:emotions, nature, and other forms of art.I am also very moved
by pain. When there is pain in the world or in my heart,it can be unbearable.I had a conversation with an
activist in St.Louis named Spook, and I explained to her this feeling and she told me,"Pain is energy.
You have to learn how to channel that energy into something productive."So sometimes I channel that
pain into art,into a painting.
Even if the picture doesn't turn out aesthetically()pleasing by society's standards,it's still
beautiful that I was able to create something.My paintings may not be a Basquiat,but they're mine,so I
love them anyway.

When I think of the hardest moments of my life, ironically many have turned out to be blessings.
The most severe one was being pretty much kicked out of my PhD program at the University of Georgia
in2016.
The program in Georgia turned out not to be the right fit for me despite my best efforts. The whole
year was riddled with exhaustion, insecurity, fear, and exclusion.I was in therapy myself for most of the
year to cope, and the only thing that made it tolerable was a lot of support from my family and friends.
I was utterly devastated when I went back home;it felt like my career was over.Fast forward to
today, however, and I can see that getting driven out of the Georgia program was one of the best things
that ever happened to me.In 2017,when I transferred to a doctoral program in San Diego,I began to
thrive and now my business is doing exceptionally well.I am deeply grateful I studied in San Diego and
happy that I didn't stay in Georgia. It was great that I was driven out!As the saying goes,"What seems
like good or bad news now can turn out to be the opposite in the future."Ironically, the research and
writing training from the University of Georgia significantly helped me develop my academic,
professional, and personal writing.I worked hard in Georgia and it paid off:The learning and growth I
experienced were incomparable.
As my personal example demonstrates, life is a total rollercoaster.Every now and then you are able
to discover a new high,a ceiling-breaking moment, whereas in other moments you may feel like you're
falling deeper and deeper into hell. While these experiences can be incredibly tough, they present us with
valuable opportunities to trust life and cultivate personal growth and learning.

been dominating the sport ever since she entered this field is just getting warmed up.
The youngster who is also studying for a creative writing degree at Columbia University says that
she began climbing even before she could walk.As a baby, she constantly escaped from her bed and led
her friends to the nearest rocks or hills. Then at the age of seven she attended brother's birthday party at
a local rock climbing gym and found her gift for it.
Soon after, she joined the local center in her hometown of Alexandria,Virginia and began climbing-

her normal climbing routine. Her competitive nature and love for the sport immediately reached the peak
and she began training seriously, but this time outside the gym-climbing real mountains.

In life, once on a path,we tend to follow it,for better or worse. What's sad is that even if it's the
latter,we often follow a certain path anyway because we are so used to the way things are that we don't
even recognize that they could be different.Psychologists call this phenomenon functional fixedness.
This classic experiment will give you an idea of how it works-and a sense of whether you may have
fallen into the same trap:
People are given a box of tacks()and some matches and asked to find a way to attach a
candle to a wall so that it burns properly.Typically, the subjects try tacking the candle to the wall or
lighting it to fix it with melted wax().The tacks are too short, and the candle doesn't fasten to the
wall.So how can you accomplish the task? The successful technique is to use the tack box as a candle
holder. You empty it,tack it to the wall, and stand the candle inside it.
To think of that, you have to look beyond the box's usual role as a container just for tacks and
reimagine it serving an entirely new purpose. That is difficult because we all suffer-to one degree or
another-from functional fixedness. The inability to think in new ways affects people in every corner of
society. The political theorist Hannah Arendt coined the phrase "frozen thoughts"to describe deeply held
ideas that we no longer question but should. In Arendt's eyes, the complacent reliance on such accepted
"truths"also made people blind to ideas that didn't fit their worldview, even when there was enough
evidence for them.Frozen thinking has nothing to do with intelligence. She said,"It can be found in
highly intelligent people."
Another context in which frozen thinking can turn truly dangerous is medicine. If you land in the
hospital,it's natural to want to be treated by the most experienced physicians on staff. But according to a
2014 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA),you'd be better off being
treated by the relative novices(新手),
1.What's the reason for the phenomenon "functional fixedness"?(no more than 20 words)

The Appalachian Trail attracts thousands of serious hikers each spring, only one in four hikers
completes the entire trail.
The Sutton family recently finished hiking the entire trail. They are a unique trio()as their
son Harvey turned five on the trail, which makes him the youngest to complete the Appalachian Trail.
Josh and Carrie Sutton said they needed to take breaks from busy work called mini-retirements."We set
the family goal of living a life with extraordinary stories.Doing things like hiking with a child on the
Appalachian Trail gives you extraordinary stories,Josh Sutton said.
When Harvey turned three, they took him winter camping, and by the time he was four, the family
completed a 50-mile hike,camping over six days.Seeing that Harvey developed a passion for hiking,they
planned a thru-hike on the Appalachian Trail.Hiking from end to end is called a thru-hike and generally
takes five to seven months to complete.
They hit the trail in Georgia on January 13,2021.The first weeks were cold. The trail was icy and
snow-covered,and the weather was often cloudy and bitter,so they made slow progress. They would
wake up early each day, pack their gear(),and then start walking. As they had many miles to cover
each day, they had to be inventive and started using imagination and Skittles()as incentive for
little Harvey.
The family completed their journey on August 9,2021.Little Harvey learned to count all the way to
2,193,the total miles his little feet traveled, and a big number for someone who just started
kindergarten."I will do it again because like it so much,"said Harvey.
Although the Suttons are now back home, they have incredible memories of this mini-retirement.

I saw a group of kids run into Dan,knocking his books out of his arms and pushing him so he fell over.
I ran over to help him,and as we were picking up his books,I saw tears in his eyes.

As the snow melted, many of the neighborhood's kids began to learn how to ride a bike.Their
mothers would be nearby, sitting and chatting on the roadside.Dad wanted a place for children to play,a
quiet place for parents to sit and relax, but more importantly,a reason for everyone to leave the house
and join the community. He began imagining benches.
He started knocking on doors and reshaking hands with the neighbors. When Construction began
with me and my father hauling pieces of wood and steel out of his truck, within minutes there was a
crowd of young neighbors at hand, each claiming they could help.None of us knew each other well, but
all hands were on deck.Jeff ran to the garage to grab his drill().Brian held the boards together
while I dug through the toolbox in search of a wrench().Charlie measured and marked locations on
the ground for drilling.
After a few hours, three benches formed a semi-circle on the street. They were the perfect place to
sit and be with the neighbors, have a coffee in the morning or have a beer after work.
That afternoon marked the first of many weekend Neighbor Days when weather permitted.Kids
raced each other around while parents brought out food.Later in the evening, someone put a firepit in the
center of the benches so that the conversations would carry on into the night. We often ended up there

An 89-year-old man has reached a goal he spent 20 years working toward. He earned his doctor
degree and became a physicist.

Steiner values this degree because it is what he always wanted-and because he overcame health
problems that could have interfered with his studies.
As a young person in Vienna,Austria,Steiner wanted to become a physicist after reading about
Albert Einstein and Max Planck.
But after World War II,his mother advised him that studying medicine would be a better choice. He
earned his medical degree from the University of Vienna in 1955 and moved to the United States soon
after. In the U.S.,he had a successful career studying blood, became a full professor and led the
hematology()department at Brown's medical school from 1985 to 1994.He helped establish a
research program in hematology and directed that program until he retired from medicine in 2000.
Steiner found medical research pleasing, but it was not quite the same as his interest in physics.
"It was something like a wish that was never fulfilled, that always stuck in the back of my head,"he
said."Once I'm finished with medicine,I really don't want to spend my life just sitting around and maybe
doing a little golfing or doing something like that.I wanted to keep active.
At age 70,he started taking undergraduate classes at Brown University. He was planning to just
take a few classes that interested him.But by 2007,he had earned enough credits to join the doctoral
program.
Physics professor Brad Marston soon realized how serious Steiner was about the subject and how
hard he worked."He already had a scientific way of thinking that younger students have to develop,"
Marston said."One thing that's really true about Manfred is he perseveres.
After the university published a story about Steiner on its website, people across the U.S.contacted

My brother had a driving passion for cars.So to speak.Fords in particular. He was especially fond of

When Joe was just a little boy,he would often say to me,"Sister, when I am old enough to get my

picturing in his mind exactly how fine it would be.I could have told him it would never happen. No

Joe had trouble not just with his eyes, but with his legs.He was born premature(早产的),suffered
from disabilities and could not walk until he was 5.That's when he got his first "car",a red Radio Flyer
tricycle that he called his 49 Ford.He couldn't pedal it,so he would push it everywhere, sometimes even
falling over.
Growing up is a tug of war()between disappointment and surprise, between dreams and
reality,By the time Joe was 12,I think he knew he would never get a license. As with the other hard
faets of life,he seemed to accept it without question or bitterness,as if it were nothing more than a card
drawn at random.
One hot summer day when he was 16,Joe went tapping out the driveway with his stick, finding his
way to my stepfather's 49 Ford.He ran his hand along the car, felt the heat of the metal, opened the door
and climbed in.He looked good.
Under the seat,he discovered a six-pack of beer. And he drank all six cans.He felt inside the car,
found the keys, shouted,"Hoowecee!"and fired it up.
I have heard various versions of this story. They all boil down to this:the Ford's engine roared. My
mother fainted. My stepfather rushed outside. And my brother, after a moment of pure joy, threw up all
over the car.

Reading broadens our horizons and gives us wisdom.Reading can also be a bridge bonding family
members.
Rose is my daughter.I read stories to her every night when she was a little girl.So I had her
captivated by books when she was at an early age.For example, almost every night she would go to bed
early, waiting for my reading. When Rose was about eight,we changed our routine. We took turns
selecting our books and reading out loud.
There was no regular pattern in the books selected.I remember that we began with Robert Louis
Stevenson's Treasure Island, enjoying the company of those rough sailors and stumbling(结e结巴巴地
over the eighteenth-century seamen's dialect. But we loved the book, and learned a lot about pirates
daily life, adventures, tricks, greed and so on.We later went through many books, like the chick lit
series.
In due course Rose grew up and left for McGill University in Montreal. She was educated in French
and was enthusiastic about speaking the language. Her first visit home was at Christmas. There was a
gift from her,an audiobook with six cassettes. It was Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic Takes Manhattan,
read by Rose. Her reading was interrupted occasionally by a giggle, and her voice made me remember
how happily Rose and I read together in our bedroom every night when she was a kid.
As I write this,Rose is a third-year medical student at Dalhousie University. Now she is interested
in medicine while I am interested in history. However,we manage to combine our different personal
interests. We recommend selected reading materials to each other. We are currently loving The Crimson

summit(of Qomolangma.Should they press on or turn back?
Zhang's guide Chen Tao made a quick decision that he and the two photographers with the group
should immediately withdraw and leave their oxygen tanks to Zhang to let him finish the climb to the
summit of the mountain.
The wind was strong, and Zhang was terrified. The three Sherpa guides didn't speak Chinese and
their English instructions to Zhang were muffled by the high wind. And there was additional difficulty for
Zhang-he can't see.
To walk on a path was often hard for the Chinese mountaineer. And there was no actual path on the
mountain.Zhang had to follow the guides'directions precisely on every single step. The guides told him
in which direction to go and the length of each step. But one mistake could cost Zhang's life.
At first,Zhang didn't want to continue. But Chen told Zhang "If you don't continue, this may the
last chance you have to reach the top of Qomolangma, while I will still have more chances."There was
no time left for 46-year-old Zhang to argue with Chen and Chen gave Zhang a gentle nudge to hurry him
on.
Zhang continued his climb with one guide in front of him and two behind. After several more hours'
climbing, the guide leading the way told Zhang that he was standing at the top of the mountain.Zhang
was the first visually impaired()person from Asia ever to conquer the world's highest peak.
On the rock face of the mountain,Zhang etched()his name alongside that of Erik Weihenmayer
and Andy Holzer, who completed the feat()in 2001 and 2017 respectively. They are the only three

When something goes wrong,it can be very satisfying to say,"Well,it's so-and-so's fault."or"I
know I'm late, but it's not my fault;the car broke down.It is probably not your fault, but once you
form the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no
power and could do nothing that helps change the bad situation.
However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to
blame and start focusing on how to improve the situation. This is the winner's key to success.
Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example,if you were late because your car broke
down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly.Or,you might start to carry along with
you the useful phone numbers,so you could call for help when in need.
Actually, cases of this kind are common occurrence. If your colleague causes you problems on the
job for lack of responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather
than simply blame the person.Ask to work with a different person,or don't rely on this person. You
should accept that the person is not reliable and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of
how your colleague fails to do his job well.
This is what being a winner is all about-creatively using your skills and talents so that you are
successful no matter what happens.Winners don't have fewer problems in their lives;they have just as
many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as
challenges and opportunities to develop their own talents. So,stop focusing on "whose fault it is".Once
you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stones for success.

Behind the band, there was a picture of a young man named Philip Hancock shown on the screen.
And he was the reason they were all there.Hancock was a 27-year-old Australian who taught English in
Chongqing. When he died in 2018 due to complications from diabetes, his parents followed his wishes and
donated his organs with the help of the Red Cross Society of China's Chongqing branch.

Since they had no music experience, they had to start from scratch. From learning the guitar to
mastering the maracas()and taking on the drum they took time out of their busy lives to practice
over the past year.

are determined to achieve it,said Mo Li,the 36-year-old real estate salesman.

Frank's voice dropped a bit."When the weather was bad,he would drive me to school. He would

Nowadays even your grandmother is not likely to call you on your landline.Evidence indicates that
the elderly are in fact adapting to new technology quite easily, especially as digital technology continues
to become ever more user-friendly.For those who do have difficulty, help is at hand.
In many countries, the elderly can receive free training in the use of computers, and learn how to
correspond by email, how to send photos and voice messages, and how to use the Internet for shopping
and other services.Across the world, centres for the elderly report that their most popular classes are in

the use of smartphones and tables. It is clear that the elderly have already come to rely on digital
technology to help them remain independent and keep in touch with friends and relatives.
Elderly people enjoy using technology for the same reasons as the rest of us:entertainment and
leisure.Having plenty of free time, many elderly people like to find out new things or write down their
experiences.Being able to use a computer, smartphone or tablet makes this easier to do,and can open the
door to interesting hobbies. Many social media sites developed for the younger generation are now being
enjoyed by the elderly, too. And for elderly people who may be unable to leave their homes without
assistance, communication with the outside world is essential to prevent loneliness and to allow them to
call for help in emergencies. In Singapore, the elderly are even turning to robots to keep them in good
physical shape.
So it would seem that rather than being afraid of new technology, the elderly have much to gain
from it,and are embracing it fully. As digital technology comes down in price, and becomes easier to
operate,it could help to transform old age for millions of people.

As any younger brother will tell you, having a big brother involves a lot of walking in someone else's
shadow.especially when you have a brother who is a typical example of "cool".For years I wanted to do
everything my elder brother Tyson did,but no matter how hard I tried,I was always the neglected one.
My legs just weren't made to run like his.I could never play football or basketball well.
I probably would have continued trying to keep up with him for the rest of my high school career,
but when my family moved, everything changed.Tyson left for college,so I had to start at a new school
all by myself. This new start gave me an opportunity to redefine myself an discover and entirely new
version of“cool”.

fascinated with chemistry, biology, and math, but since those interests hadn't fit Tyson's definition of
"cool",I had never pursued them.On this day,for some reason,I did.
As we organized teams, prepared resources and practiced answering questions,I felt more connected

After 22 years of marriage,I have discovered the secret to keep love and intimacy alive in my
relationship with my wife,Peggy:I started dating with another woman.
It was Peggy's idea, actually,"you know you love her."She said one day, taking me in surprise. The
"other"woman my wife was encouraging me to date is my mother,a 72-year-old widow who has lived
alone since my father died 20 years ago.I had promised myself that I would spend more time with mom.
But with the demands of my job and three kids,I never got around to see her much beyond family get-
togethers and holidays.
I telephoned mom,suggesting a dinner and a movie together.We didn't go anywhere fancy,just a
neighborhood place where we could talk.My mother held my arm, half out of affection and half to help
her negotiate the restaurant steps.
Since her eyes now see only large shapes and shadows,I had to read the menu for both of us."I used

“Where are you going to college?”“T'm going to my local community college.”My answer seemed

Many people think community colleges are only for people who couldn't get into a four-year school.
But it is not true.In high school,I always got A's.But when it came to applying to colleges,I had no idea
what I wanted to major in and couldn't justify spending thousands of dollars at a 4-year school until I
knew what I wanted to do.My parents were very supportive of my decision to attend the community
college.
Some people will ask,"Since the community college is cheaper, will you get a good education?"I
found that nearly all of my professors taught the same courses at 4-year colleges. My professors were
knowledgeable and experienced, and I found many of the courses challenging.
Some people think if I attend the community college,I will miss out on the "college experience".I
must admit that this is something I worried about a great deal the summer before college. But I soon
learned that the community college, just like any other college,is what you make of it.I strived to make
