Dongshi Imitates Xishi's Frown
During the Spring and Autumn Period, Xishi was a beautiful woman in the State of Yue. She often washed yarn by the stream. Legend has it that her beauty was so great that even the fish in the stream would forget to swim when they saw her and gradually sink to the bottom. However, this beautiful woman suffered from a heartache, and it often flared up. When the pain came, she could hardly bear it—she would often hold her chest with both hands and frown. People thought this would ruin her beautiful appearance, but surprisingly, this sickly look made her even more delicate, gentle and charming. Therefore, the neighbors all pitied and cared for her.
In the east of the same village, there lived another woman named Dongshi. Unlike Xishi, she was very ugly. But she also longed to be loved and cared for by everyone. When she saw that Xishi's sickly and weak look made everyone like her, she couldn't help thinking: Maybe people prefer women who look sickly and weak. So, every time she went out, she imitated Xishi—holding her chest, frowning, and pretending to be so delicate that she could hardly stand a gust of wind. She did her best to make herself look gentle and beautiful.
However, when the neighbors saw her, they all walked around her to avoid her. Why? Because Dongshi was already ugly. Without pretending, she still looked normal. But when she pretended, her face became even more hideous—she pulled at her mouth, squinted her small eyes, and walked with a strange twist. Everything about her looked unnatural. The rich people in the village would immediately shut their doors tightly and hide in their houses when they saw her. The poor people would quickly take their wives and children and run away from her.
Dongshi's desire to be beautiful and to be liked by others was not wrong. But she didn't understand what true beauty was, nor did she know how to become beautiful. She just blindly imitated others, and instead ended up being laughed at. That was truly sad.
Moral
Although Dongshi was ugly, people would not have hated her if she had been honest and not pretended to be someone she was not. This fable tells us that we must have a correct attitude when learning from others—we must always start from our own reality. Blind imitation and copying others mechanically is foolish. It will not bring good results; instead, it may even backfire.
