I am Barbara Sloan, 51 years old. I want to share my experience about an unusual friendship. How many friendships last for decades without meeting? That’s what happened between me and my French pen friend Michèle.
We began writing to each other as teenagers, but 36 years passed before we met face-to-face. I started looking for pen friends because I was the only child in my family and I felt lonely. I still remember when my father brought me an envelope containing (包含) Michèle’s first letter and photo. Over the years, we exchanged family pictures, gifts, and souvenirs.
In 1972, I married Alan, a decorator. Michèle sent me a golden necklace as a wedding gift. When my children Lindsey, Duncan and Robert were born, she sent presents every Christmas. In November 1998, while wrapping Michèle’s Christmas present, Lindsey suggested, “Why don’t you visit her?”
A few weeks later, I wrote to Michèle proposing a visit. The next year, I flew to France. At the airport, after waiting anxiously, a blonde woman called out, “Barbara?” I responded, “Michèle?” We hugged tightly and spent a wonderful week together. I considered staying longer, but Alan called to say Robert was ill, so I returned home.
Two years later, Michèle wrote that she was planning to visit Britain. Alan and I went to the airport but waited in vain. Concerned, Alan called Michele’s home. Her husband told us she had died in an accident hours before her flight. I was devastated (悲痛欲绝的) and stopped speaking for two weeks. Later, I continued writing letters to Michèle’s family as if she were still alive.
49. What is the main reason Barbara started looking for pen friends?
A. She wanted to learn French. B. She liked collecting photos and gifts.
C. She felt lonely. D. She enjoyed writing letters to strangers.
50. Why did Barbara return home from France earlier than planned?
A. Because she missed her husband Alan.
B. Because Michèle had to leave for work.
C. Because her son Robert was sick.
D. Because she ran out of money.
51. What is the correct order of the following events?
a. Michèle sent Barbara a wedding gift.
b. Barbara met Michèle in France.

C. To share a special friendship story. D. To teach about writing letters.

Kids will often ignore (忽视) your requests for them to shut off the TV, start their chores (杂务), or do their homework as a way not to follow your directions. Before you know it, you’ve started to sound like a broken record as you repeatedly ask them to clean their room, or take out the trash. Rather than saying “Do your chores now”, you’ll be more effective if you set a time for when the chores have to be completed. So instead of arguing about starting chores, just say, “If chores aren’t done by 4 p.m., here are the consequences.” Then it’s up to your child to complete the chores. Put the ball back in their court. Don’t argue or fight with them, just say, “That’s the way it’s going to be. If your chores aren’t done by 4 p.m., then no video game time until chores are done. And if finishing those chores runs into homework time, that’s going to be your loss.” On the other hand, when dealing with homework, keep it very simple. Have a time when homework starts, and at that time, all electronics go off and do not go back on until you see that their homework is done. If your kids say they have no homework, then they should use that time to study or read.
When a kid wears his iPod or headphones when you’re trying to talk to him, make no bones about it; he is not ignoring you, he is disrespecting you. At that point, everything else should stop until he takes the earplugs out of his ears. Don’t try to communicate with him when he’s wearing headphones—even if he tells you he can hear you. Wearing them while you’re talking to him is a sign of disrespect. Parents should be very strict about this kind of thing. Remember, respect becomes more important as children mature.
53. What does the underlined word “consequences” mean?
A. Good events. B. Bad results. C. Interesting things. D. Dangerous accidents.
54. When the kid is doing his homework, parents ________.
A. can do whatever they like B. should offer him a good learning environment
C. can stay aside watching TV D. must cut off the power
55. According to the passage, it seldom happens that _________.
A. kids turn a deaf ear to their parents’ requests
B. parents’ directions sound like a broken record
C. children are ready to follow their parents’ directions
D. parents don’t know what they are repeating to their kids
56. The writer writes the passage to suggest _________.
A. that respecting each other is more important than anything else
B. what kids should do to ignore and disrespect their parents
C. that children should make choices and decisions on their own
D. how parents can get on with their children wisely
D
That year, I was a Junior 2 student. Falling off the stairs hurt me in the head. Almost everyone thought I was dead. But they were wrong. However, it was difficult to get back to normal (正常的) life. I had to leave school and learn everything, walking, talking, and yes, maths.
To help me with that task, Mrs. Pillar volunteered to come to the hospital and later to my house once a week. We began with basic maths skills. As time passed by, I made progress (进步).
I remember very vividly (清晰地) how she came to my home on Sundays, sat with me at the kitchen table, and threw different coins on the table. She asked me to show her 38 cents, 17 cents, 63 cents. It was challenging (有挑战的), but she also made it fun.
After a year and a half, I had progressed a lot, both in body and mind, to return to school. Seven years later, I graduated from the University of Texas at the top of my class.
As years went by, I always kept in touch with Mrs. Pillar. Unluckily, one day my parents told me that Mrs. Pillar had been in hospital because she suffered a stroke (中风).
Now it was my turn to help her. Mrs. Pillar lay in bed, unable to speak or know anybody around. I pulled some coins out of my pocket, dropped them on her bed, and asked her to show me 12 cents. The nurse thought that my action was very strange until one day Mrs. Pillar smiled happily as I began working with her — just as she had worked with me years before. She made progress every day and was moved out of ICU (重症监护室) and finally out of hospital.
One day, I called to wish her a happy New Year. She spoke into the phone excitedly, “Happy New Year to you and your family, Michael. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.” I quickly said, “Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.”
Mrs. Pillar was one of my Junior 2 teachers, but she taught me so much more about life than only maths.
57. Which of the following is the correct order of what happened in the story?
a. Mrs. Pillar suffered a stroke and was in hospital. b. I fell off the stairs and had to leave school.

七、阅读与回答问题(本题共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
Recently, the topic of “premade food (预制菜) in schools” has caused extensive debates. China’s Ministry of Education has warned against schools serving precooked meals to students, after parents complained they may be unhealthy and unsafe for children to eat.
Teenagers need to eat food that is good for their bodies while they’re still young so that they will grow up to be healthy adults. So it is necessary for school cafeterias to provide nutritious and healthy food. With this in mind, the government has introduced a new food safety rule that will improve nutrition and health standards in schools.
The rule came into force to require the heads of primary and middle schools to eat with students in their cafeterias. Schools will also be required to show the public the information about food sources and suppliers.
The rule also suggests that parents should eat with students at school in order to provide advice on food safety and nutrition. Schools must try to find food safety problems and solve them in a timely manner.
“If a school is caught buying low-quality food or failing to report food safety incidents, the head of the school will be warned, fired or handed over to law enforcement (执法机关).” the rule says.
Parents across China have become angry about food safety incidents in schools, according to the Beijing News.
The most recent example happened in March at the Chengdu No. 7 High School Development School. Parents posted videos and photos of moldy food that was served in the schools’ cafeteria, China Daily reported. Finally, the head of the school was fired.
In October, the head of an international school in Shanghai was fired after health and education authorities found moldy tomatoes and onions in the school’s kitchen.
What do other schools do?
Schools in other countries have many ways to ensure food safety. For example, many parents in Australia volunteer in their children’s school cafeterias, according to China National Radio. These parents do their best to see that their children are served nutritious food.

24. China won more gold medals than ________ in Europe (欧洲) in the Paris Olympic Games in the summer holiday.
A. any other country B. the other countries C. other country D. any country
选项A“any other country”用于同一范围内比较(此处中国与欧洲国家属于不同大洲),不符合逻辑;选项B“the other countries”特指“其余所有国家”,与“in Europe”范围限定冲突;选项C“other country”缺少限定词,语法错误。故选D。

考查形容词最高级。“one of+the+形容词最高级+可数名词复数”是固定结构,意为“……中最……之一”,当最高级前有限定词(China’s)时,通常省略定冠词the,所以用“most famous”。故选C。

29. Shanghai isn’t so large ________ Nanjing. However, it’s the second ________ city in population in China.
A. as, largest B. like, largest C. as, larger D. as, large
【答案】A
【解析】

考查固定搭配和形容词最高级。as正如;like像;largest最大的(最高级);larger更大的(比较级)。根据“Shanghai isn’t so large...Nanjing.”可知,此处应用“not so...as”结构,表示“不如……”;根据“it’s the second...city in population in China”可知,此处应用“序数词+最高级”结构。故选A。

51. What is the correct order of the following events?
a. Michèle sent Barbara a wedding gift.

52. What is the main purpose of the text?

C
【答案】53. B 54. B 55. C 56. D
根据“That’s the way it’s going to be. If your chores aren’t done by 4 p.m., then no video game time until chores are done. And if finishing those chores runs into homework time, that’s going to be your loss.”可知,家务活完成之前都不可以玩电子游戏,所以consequences含义为“后果”,即不好的结果。故选B。
【54题详解】
推理判断题。根据“Have a time when homework starts, and at that time, all electronics go off and do not go back on until you see that their homework is done.”可知,当孩子做作业时,所有电子设备都会关闭直到作业完成,即父母应该给孩子一个良好的学习环境。故选B。
【55题详解】
推理判断题。根据“Kids will often ignore (忽视) your requests for them to shut off the TV, start their chores (杂务), or do their homework as a way not to follow your directions.”可知,孩子们很少愿意服从父母的指令。故选C。
