It was a dark and stormy night. It was New Year’s Eve. We were having our party and had a house full of people just starting to celebrate.
Suddenly, we heard loud explosions (爆炸声). Looking outside and up into the hills, we saw sparks (火花) flying from electrical transformers (变压器). Then our house went dark. I tried to find every candle we had and lit them. The candles made everything look lovely. But we had problems. We had fifteen people standing around and we still had to cook dinner. How would we do that without electricity?
The barbecue! Why not cook on the barbecue? We boys and men went outside, some holding flashlights and others cooking. We did a wonderful job. The girls and women stayed inside and got the salads ready. Everything was delicious. There were still a few hours to go before the begınning of the new year, so we all sat around the dining room table and sang up until a few minutes before midnight. We couldn’t watch the ball drop in Times Square on television but that wouldn’t stop us from celebrating. I stood on a chair and, with the help of someone’s watch to tell us the time, we all counted down and I dropped a tennis ball! We all screamed Happy New Year. We didn’t need electricity for that!

Both my wife and I are running lovers. I usually run on the track (跑道) in my neighbourhood. Most people walk on the track, so I am faster than them. My speed seems amazing to the walkers and I often pass by them twenty or more times around the track. This makes me feel proud.
One day, a short man came. He didn’t look like much of a runner. I saw him get out of the car and warm up before running when I passed by two walkers. He started running a few metres ahead of me. He was fast but I sped up and managed to catch up with him. I had someone to compete with. But after a lap, I fell behind him and had great difficulty in breathing. After two laps, my foot began to hurt, so I had to slow down and began to run at my usual speed. This time I could breathe again without sounding like I had a lung disease and the pain in my foot went away. In a very short time, he was far ahead. He was too fast for me to follow.
That day, I learnt several lessons. In life, there will always be those slower and faster. Some have natural talent, and some have trained harder. Don’t judge the capacity of a person by how he or she looks.
The point is that we each have our own speed. When we are trying to keep up, we often end up hurting ourselves and being out of breath. Slow down or speed up, but run your race to your best.
38. What did the writer think of the short man at first?
A. He was an amazing runner.
B. He was an experienced driver.

D. He started to have a pain in his foot.
40. What does the underlined word “capacity” probably mean?
A. Age. B. Job. C. Hobby. D. Ability.
41. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. The Slower, the Healthier B. The Faster, the Better C. Keep Healthy through Running D. Enjoy Your Own Speed

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania in the US said parents should consider changing the diet of children instead of pushing them to go to bed. There are some studies on the relationship between diet and intelligence.
The researchers asked 541 school children aged between nine and eleven to fill in a survey about how much fish they ate and then tested their IQ. Their parents were then asked about kids’ sleep quality. The result showed increasing fish consumption led to better quality of sleep.
What’s more, the team found that children who ate fish weekly scored 4.8 points higher in the IQ tests than those who seldom or never ate fish. Those whose meals sometimes included fish scored 3.3 points higher.
The study in the past has shown that the omega-3 found in fish can improve intelligence and sleep. It was the first time that all three had been connected together. However, from the new study, the scientists believe that better sleep produced by omega-3 helps improve IQ rather than the omega-3 itself.
“If the fish improves sleep, that is great. Because doing that can be a lot easier than pushing children about going to bed. If it also improves intelligence, like we’ve seen here, that is even better. It’s a double hit. “said Professor Adrian Raine.
Dr Jennifer Martin added, children should start eating fish by at least the age of two. Then, slowly add more fish into the diet, especially in a culture where fish is not as commonly served or smelled. That’s because it can make fish more acceptable. If children are not used to it, they may shy away from it.
Eating fish certainly has such excellent health benefits. It should be popularized and increased.
42. Which of the following about the study is TRUE?
A. 541 parents in total took the IQ tests.
B. Eating fish fails to improve sleep quality.
C. Some kids aged from 9 to II were surveyed.
D. People who sometimes eat fish scored worst.
43. From the new study, the scientists believe ________.
A. omega-3 itself makes intelligence improve
B. high sleep quality is key to help improve IQ
C. going to bed early can improve sleep quality
D. omega-3 makes people often wake up at night
44. What does ”doing that” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A. Changing the diet of kids. B. Buying a comfortable bed.
C. Having intelligence classes. D. Taking the IQ tests weekly.
45. What is the advice from Dr Jennifer Martin to parents?
A. Ask kids to eat fish before sleeping every day.
B. Introduce some good points of eating fish to kids.
C. Start to add fish into kids’ diet after the age of two.
D. Let kids eat fish early to make them accept it easily.
【答案】42. C 43. B 44. A 45. D

C. He wasn’t good at running.

What’s morethe team found that children who ate fish weekly scored 4.8 points higher in the IQ tests than those who seldom or never ate fish.
