I haven’t seen many of you since your graduation, but I have followed your careers and enjoyed your victories as well as crying for your tragedies. Regardless of our motives, I can see that you have all been successful in you chosen path.”(我相信,如果我尽我所能地鞭策你们,你们中的一些人会成功地取悦我,而另一些人会成功地激怒我。 据第二段关键句“Many started looking at their watches and coming up with excuses to be anywhere instead of preparing to listen to a lecture from an old woman who had few kind words for her students and made them work harder than all the other teachers combined.”(许多人开始看手表,找借口去任何地方,而不是准备听一位老妇人的讲座,这位老妇人对她的学生几乎没有什么好话,与其他所有老师相比,她让她的学生更加努力地学习。)可知,耶茨老师对学生要求非常严格,由此可知,她是一个严格的人;根据第四段关键句“I haven’t seen many of you since your graduation, but I have followed your careers and enjoyed your victories as well as crying for your tragedies. I have a large collection of newspaper photographs of my students.”(自从你们毕业后,我没见过你们中的很多人,但我追随你们的职业生涯,享受你们的胜利,也为你们的悲剧哭泣。 C With a thirst for a new challenge, I decided to begin my language journey and my only regret is that I didn’t start earlier. Since starting to learn, I have made good progress. The Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) is a test of Chinese language for non-native speakers. In July 2020, I passed my HSK3 exam with a score of 100 percent. I am now almost ready to start HSK5. Learning to speak Chinese isn’t as insurmountable as I once thought. When I speak to native (当地的) speakers in Chinese, they almost always understand me. I also find it not too difficult to remember characters and I am now even able to write over 400 characters. I find studying the language relaxing and worthwhile, particularly writing the characters. The thing I find most challenging is listening because native speakers talk at such a speed (速度). I can’t always understand what’s been said, but my weekly online language exchanges help with this greatly. Despite my progress, it has taken a lot of hard work. Furthermore, there is a long way to go before I reach my goal of fluency. The key to progress is to be patient . The satisfaction (满意) that comes from simple things like ordering food (点餐) in Chinese, buying things on the Internet or communicating with a taxi driver makes all the hard work worth it. My biggest takeaway from learning Chinese is that it’s not only double but can also be enjoyable. Learning Chinese not only helped me in day-to-day life, but deepened my cultural understanding of such a colorful and beautiful country. Considering where I am now, compared to two years ago, as long as I keep studying hard, I can image a time when I’ll be able to read famous Chinese novels not in English but in the original text. So, to all my non-Chinese friends, I always say “Don’t give up. Embrace (拥抱) the challenge.” 46.What is the author’s regret? A.He had a new challenge. B.He decided to begin his language journey. C.He didn’t start learning Chinese earlier D.He passed his HSK3 exam. 47.What does the underlined word “insurmountable” mean in paragraph 2? A.upset. B.Possible. C.Comfortable. D.Difficult. 48.Which one is the most challenging for the author? A.Writing characters. B.Taking part in HSK exams. C.Listening to the native speaking. D.Speaking to a taxi driver. 49.Why does the author think learning Chinese is satisfying? A.It can make the author proud. B.It makes the author know more Chinese characters. C.It can be useful in daily life. D.It makes the author more competitive. 50.Which can be a suitable title for the text? A.Passing exams isn’t a piece of cake B.Learning Chinese isn’t unbeatable C.Explore the historical and cultural country D.Deepen understanding of Chinese culture 【答案】46.C 47.D 48.C 49.C 50.B 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。 根据第一段中的“With a thirst for a new challenge, I decided to begin my language journey and my only regret is that I didn’t start earlier.(怀着对新挑战的渴望,我决定开始我的语言之旅,我唯一的遗憾是没有早点开始)”可知,作者渴望新的挑战,决定开始语言之旅,唯一的遗憾是没有早点开始,所以,作者后悔的是没有早点开始学习汉语。 根据划线词后的“When I speak to native (当地的) speakers in Chinese, they almost always understand me. I also find it not too difficult to remember characters and I am now even able to write over 400 characters.(当我和母语者用汉语交谈时,他们几乎都能理解我。 根据第二段中的“The thing I find most challenging is listening because native speakers talk at such a speed (速度).(我发现最具挑战的事是听力,因为母语者们语速如此之快)”可知,因为母语者说的语速很快,所以,作者认为学习汉语时最困难的部分是听母语者讲话。故选C项。 49. 根据第三段中的“The satisfaction (满意) that comes from simple things like ordering food (点餐) in Chinese, buying things on the Internet or communicating with a taxi driver makes all the hard work worth it.(一些小事带来的满足感,比如用中文点餐,在网上购物或是和出租车司机交流,让我感到所有的辛苦都是值得的)”可知,作者认为用中文点餐,在网上购物或者与出租车司机交流这些小事带来很多的满足感,由此可知,因为日常生活中能使用汉语,所以作者认为学习中文令他感到满足。故选C项。 50. D When John was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him weeding the garden, carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when John reached adulthood, he was better off than his childhood playmates. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was happier. Far happier. These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not. "Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence(能力) and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society," said George Vaillant, the psychologist(心理学家) who made the discovery. "And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them." Vaillant’s study followed these males in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25,31 and 47. Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men’s mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores. Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems. The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out. Working — at any age — is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence — the underpinnings(基础) of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this. Yet work isn’t everything. As Tolstoy once said, "One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work." 51.What do we know about John? A.He enjoyed his career and marriage. B.He had few childhood playmates. C.He received little love from his family. D.He was envied by others in his childhood. 52.Vaillant’s words in Paragraph 2 serve as . A.a description of personal values and social values B.an analysis of how work was related to competence C.an example for parents’ expectations of their children D.an explanation why some boys grew into happy men 53.Vaillant’s team obtained their findings by . A.recording the boys’ effort in school B.evaluating the men’s mental health C.comparing different sets of scores D.measuring the men’s problem solving ability 54.What does the underlined word "sharp" probably mean in Paragraph 4? A.Quick to react. B.Having a thin edge. C.Clear and definite. D.Sudden and rapid. 55.What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A.Competent adults know more about love than work. B.Emotional health is essential to a wonderful adult life. C.Love brings more joy to people than work does. D.Independence is the key to one’s success. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier.,可知,他的工作满意度更高,婚姻更美满,身体也更健康。 故选A。 52. Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society可知,在家庭或社区工作的男孩获得足以过温饱生活的收入,并开始觉得自己是有价值的社会成员。 The researchers compared the men’s mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores,可知,Vaillant的团队获得他们的发现是通过对比不同的得分。故选C。 54. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid. One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how too love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work,可知,如果一个人懂得如何工作,懂得如何去爱,懂得为所爱的人工作,懂得爱自己的工作,那么他就能在这个世界上活得很精彩。 I was working one night when a couple came in. They were worried about their little boy who was sick. They had been in the hospital for many days and the nurses asked them to rest for a while. I felt terribly sorry for them. I still remembered exactly what happened to my little daughter one year before. I understood their struggles and pains more than others. The nurses had done the same thing to me. And I had been forced to be away for a few hours. I knew there was no way to reduce their anxiety. but I could help them a little. So I told them that the meal was free of charge that night and provided them with delicious desserts they hadn’t ordered before. I wished them luck before they left. B  Barditch High School decided to an All-School Reunion. Over 450 people came to the event. There were tours of the old school building and a picnic at Confederate Park. Several former teachers were on hand to tell stories about the old days. Ms. Mabel Yates, the English teacher for fifty years, was wheeled to the Park. Some eyes rolled and there were a few low groans (嘟囔声) when Ms.Yates was about to speak. Many started looking at their watches and coming up with excuses to be anywhere instead of preparing to listen to a lecture from an old woman who had few kind words for her students and made them work harder than all the other teachers combined. Then Ms. Yates started to speak: “I can’t tell you how pleased I am to be here. I haven’t seen many of you since your graduation, but I have followed your careers and enjoyed your victories as well as crying for your tragedies. I have a large collection of newspaper photographs of my students. Although I haven’t appeared in person, I have attended your college graduations, weddings and even the birth your children, in my imagination.” Ms. Yates paused and started crying a bit. Then she continued: “It was my belief that if I pushed you as hard as I could, some of you would succeed to please me and others would succeed to annoy me. Regardless of our motives, I can see that you have all been successful in you chosen path.” “There is no greater comfort for an educator than to see the end result of his or her years of work. You have all been a great source of pleasure and pride for me and I want you to know I love you all from the bottom of my heart.” There was a silence over the crowd for a few seconds and then someone started clapping. The clapping turned into cheering, then into a deafening roar (呼喊). Lawyers, truck drivers, bankers and models were rubbing their eyes or crying openly with no shame all because of the words from a long forgotten English teacher from their hometown. 41.What activity was organized for the school reunion? A.Sightseeing in the park. B.A picnic on the school playground. C.Telling stories about past events. D.Graduates’ reports in the old building. 42.What can be inferred from Paragraph 2? C With a thirst for a new challenge, I decided to begin my language journey and my only regret is that I didn’t start earlier. A.Passing exams isn’t a piece of cake B.Learning Chinese isn’t unbeatable C.Explore the historical and cultural country D.Deepen understanding of Chinese culture D When John was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him. I was working one night when a couple came in. They picked a quiet corner and sat down without much energy. And I thought both of them were in need of a shower and a change of clean clothes. I served them food and then focused on my own things, but I was still concerned about them. They looked really sad. The woman explained in the end. To my surprise, a few minutes later, the young woman came back. She told me that she and her husband were really grateful for my kindness. Then she handed me a few flowers. A few years passed.
