At Pearson International Airport, Canada’s largest and busiest airport, my responsibility is to ensure the smooth transit of connecting passengers. This task involves not only answering questions about boarding gates and departure times but also addressing the various challenges that arise during their layovers (停留) . After long, non-stop flights, these travelers are often tired and hungry, seeking rest in the form of coffee, food, and a quiet lounge (休息室) , but instead, they face confusion and stress while waiting for their luggage and boarding their next flight. My role is to keep them calm and informed during this stressful time.
The lounge, like a pressure cooker, is a small world of human emotions, where stress can rise quickly. The connecting passengers, fully aware of time limits, are usually in a rush, their stress levels heightened by the fear of missing their flights. Some express their frustrations loudly, while others are reduced to tears, as the stress of travel overshadows their excitement.
In such moments, the core of our role becomes one of empathy — putting ourselves in the shoes of our passengers and offering help wherever possible. If their flight is about to leave, we tell them to run to their gate, saying, “Run! Run!” Sometimes, I even run with them, turning the airport into a race against time.
Given the short-lived nature of our interactions, brevity is the standard. Yet, even within these brief encounters, we strive to build connections. A simple “Ni hao” to Chinese passengers or a cheerful “Hola” to Spanish-speaking travelers can bring a smile to an otherwise preoccupied stranger.
The airport, far from being a dull place, is a stage where the full range of human emotions is vividly displayed: the sadness of tearful goodbyes, the joy of family reunions, the anxiety of endless lines, and the disappointment of missed connections. In these moments, I am reminded that, regardless of our origins, we are united in our ability to understand and our willingness to help. Here, we are family.
24.What is the author’s main role?
A.Ensures flights leave on time. B.Manages airport lounges.
C.Keeps the airport quiet. D.Helps passengers with their needs.
25.Why is the lounge compared to a pressure cooker?
A.It’s physically hot and uncomfortable. B.Conflicts happen frequently.
C.Passengers worry about missing flights. D.It’s overcrowded and dirty.
26.What can be inferred about the author’s interactions with passengers?
A.They are long and personal. B.They are short but meaningful.
C.They focus on solving conflicts. D.They are formal and structured.
27.What makes the airport “a stage where the full range of human emotions is vividly displayed”?
A.The high-stress environment of air travel.
B.The variety of activities and services offered.
C.The presence of family members and friends.
D.The diverse cultural backgrounds of the passengers.
【答案】24.D 25.C 26.B 27.A
根据第一段最后一句“My role is to keep them calm and informed during this stressful time.(我的职责是让他们在这个紧张的时刻保持冷静和知情。)”以及第三段中 “In such moments, the core of our role becomes one of empathy—putting ourselves in the shoes of our passengers and offering help wherever possible.( 在这样的时刻,我们角色的核心是移情——设身处地为乘客着想,尽可能地提供帮助。)”
根据第二段中“The lounge, like a pressure cooker, is a small world of human emotions, where stress can rise quickly. The connecting passengers, fully aware of time limits, are usually in a rush, their stress levels heightened by the fear of missing their flights.(休息室就像一个高压锅,是一个人类情感的小世界,在这里压力会迅速上升。转机的乘客很清楚时间限制,通常都很着急,担心错过航班加剧了他们的压力水平。)”可推知,休息室被比作高压锅是因为转机乘客担心错过航班,压力很大。故选C项。
26.推理判断题。根据第四段中“Given the short-lived nature of our interactions, brevity is the standard. Yet, even within these brief encounters, we strive to build connections.( 鉴于我们互动的短暂性,简洁是标准。然而,即使在这些短暂的接触中,我们也努力建立联系。)”可知,作者与乘客的互动时间很短,但他们努力建立联系,说明这些互动虽短却有意义。故选B项。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“The airport, far from being a dull place, is a stage where the full range of human emotions is vividly displayed: the sadness of tearful goodbyes, the joy of family reunions, the anxiety of endless lines, and the disappointment of missed connections.( 机场绝不是一个沉闷的地方,而是一个舞台,在这里,人类的各种情感都得到了生动的展示:含泪告别的悲伤,家人团聚的喜悦,无尽的排队的焦虑,以及错过航班的失望。)” 故选A项。
C
Are you a logical thinker, or would you say that you’re more free-spirited and artistic? If you’re the former, somebody’s probably told you at some point that you’re a left-brained person, and if you’re the latter, right-brained. The idea that the right half of the brain is the creative half and the left half is the analytical (分析的) half and that our individual characteristics are determined by which half is dominant is widespread in popular psychology. However, this idea is a fiction.
Although we all obviously have different personalities and talents, there’s no reason to believe these differences can be explained by the dominance of one half of the brain over the other half. Recent research using brain imaging technology hasn’t found any evidence of hemispheric (脑半球的) dominance. Math, for example, requires logical thought and, thus, is generally said to be connected with the left brain. But mathematics involves a highly creative effort in addition to being a logical one. So would a gifted mathematician be a right-brained or a left-brained person?
If there’s no evidence for the fiction of right-brained and left-brained people, why do so many people accept it? Perhaps it just makes intuitive (直觉的) sense that people’s brains would be dominant on one side or the other just as their hands, feet, or eyes are. It may also have something to do with our seemingly unlimited appetite that allows us to sort ourselves (and our friends) into “types” based on our emotional and intellectual characteristics.
When people are offered general descriptive statements that are presented as individualized descriptions of their own personalities, they tend to accept them as meaningful and true, especially if the statements are positive. The “insights” they generate are both universal and congenial. After all, who would reject a description of themselves as “artistic and creative” or “reasonable and analytical”? The fiction is popular, in the end, because it gives us a “scientific” way to talk about our favorite subject — ourselves.
28.Which is a common belief about people’s individual characteristics?
A.A logical thinker is right-brained.
B.Our right brain and left brain work the same.
C.The right half of the brain is the analytical half.
D.The dominant half of brain determines one’s characteristics.
29.Why does the author mention mathematics in paragraph 2?
A.To show that math is a logical subject.
B.To argue that creativity is irrelevant in analytical thinking.
C.To prove that left-brained people are better at problem-solving.
D.To prove personality and talent differences aren’t due to hemispheric dominance.
30.Why do many people believe in the left-brain/ right-brain theory?
A.This theory is widespread and popular.
B.Scientific studies have confirmed its accuracy.
C.It provides a way for them to sort personalities.
D.Brain imaging technology has shown clear hemispheric differences.
31.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Why Left-Brained People Are Smarter?
B.The Science of Math: Left or Right Brain?
C.The Truth Behind Hemispheric Dominance
D.Ways to Develop Both Logical and Creative Thinking
根据第一段中的“The idea that the right half of the brain is the creative half and the left half is the analytical (分析的) half and that our individual characteristics are determined by which half is dominant is widespread in popular psychology. (右脑是创造半球、左脑是分析半球,且我们的个人性格由占主导地位的半球决定,这一观点在大众心理学中广泛流传。)”可知,关于个人性格的普遍看法是“大脑中占主导地位的半球决定人的性格”。故选D项。
29.推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Math, for example, requires logical thought and, thus, is generally said to be connected with the left brain. But mathematics involves a highly creative effort in addition to being a logical one. So would a gifted mathematician be a right-brained or a left-brained person? (例如,数学需要逻辑思维,因此通常被认为与左脑有关。但数学除了是逻辑性的,还涉及高度的创造性努力。那么,一个有天赋的数学家是右脑主导还是左脑主导呢?)”可知,作者提及数学是为了举例说明:数学既需左脑关联的逻辑思维,也需右脑关联的创造性,从而证明性格和天赋差异并非由脑半球主导性决定。故选D项。
30.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“It may also have something to do with our seemingly unlimited appetite that allows us to sort ourselves (and our friends) into “types” based on our emotional and intellectual characteristics. (这也可能与我们看似无限的“分类欲望”有关——我们希望根据自己(和朋友)的情感和智力特征,将自己归入不同的“类型”。)”可知,人们相信左右脑理论,是因为它为人们提供了一种划分性格类型的方式。故选C项。
31.主旨大意题。通读全文,根据第一段中的“The idea that the right half of the brain is the creative half and the left half is the analytical (分析的) half and that our individual characteristics are determined by which half is dominant is widespread in popular psychology. However, this idea is a fiction.
D
Molecules in blood and urine may reveal how much energy a person consumes from ultra-processed foods, according to a new study.
It’s the first time that scientists have identified biological markers that can indicate higher or lower intake of the foods, which are linked to a number of health problems, said Erikka Loftfield, a US National Cancer Institute researcher who led the study.
She said it could help us to understand more about the impact of these products on our health. Ultra-processed foods — like sugary cereals, sodas, chips, frozen pizzas and more — are products created through industrial processes with ingredients such as additives, colors and preservatives not found in home kitchens.
However, studying their health impacts is hard because it’s difficult to accurately track what people eat. Typical diet studies rely on asking people what they ate during a certain period. But such reports are known to be unreliable because people don’t remember everything they ate, or they don’t record their diets accurately.
In this study, Loftfield and her colleagues examined existing data of more than 1,000 older US adults. More than 700 of them had provided blood and urine samples, as well as detailed dietary recall reports, collected over a year.
The scientists found that hundreds of metabolites — products of digestion and other processes — corresponded to the percentage of energy a person consumes from ultra-processed foods. From those, they devised a system using 28 blood markers and up to 33 urine markers that reliably predicted ultra-processed food intake in people consuming typical diets.
It’s still early research, but identifying blood and urine markers to predict consumption of ultra-processed foods is “a major scientific advance,” said Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian from Tufts University, who was not involved in the study. Loftfield said she hoped to apply the tool to existing studies where blood and urine samples are available to track, for instance, the effect of consuming ultra-processed foods on cancer risk.
However, at a time when support for government research is being cut, funding remains uncertain.
32.How did the researchers conduct their study?
A.By testing new food additives in laboratories.
B.By interviewing people about their eating habits.
C.By analyzing blood and urine samples with dietary data.
D.By comparing home-cooked meals with processed foods.
33.The word “metabolites” in paragraph 6 most likely refers to _________.
A.artificial food colors. B.kitchen cooking ingredients.
C.substances from bodily processes. D.industrial additives in processed foods.
34.What is Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian’s attitude toward the new method?
A.Skeptical. B.Favorable. C.Indifferent. D.Critical.
35.What is the author’s primary purpose in writing this passage?
A.To criticize the food industry’s use of additives.
B.To promote government funding for cancer research.
C.To compare different methods of dietary assessment.
D.To explain a scientific breakthrough in diet tracking.
【答案】32.C 33.C 34.B 35.D

根据第五段“In this study, Loftfield and her colleagues examined existing data of more than 1,000 older US adults. More than 700 of them had provided blood and urine samples, as well as detailed dietary recall reports, collected over a year.(在这项研究中, Loftffield和她的同事检查了1000多名美国老年人的现有数据。其中700多人提供了过去一年中采集的血液、尿液样本,以及详细的饮食回忆报告)”可知,研究人员通过分析血液和尿液样本与饮食数据来进行研究。故选C。
33.词句猜测题。根据下文对metabolites的解释“products of digestion and other processes(消化和其它过程的产物)”可知,metabolites指的是代谢产物。故选C。
根据倒数第二段中“It’s still early research, but identifying blood and urine markers to predict consumption of ultra-processed foods is “a major scientific advance,” said Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian from Tufts University, who was not involved in the study.(Tufts University的Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian没有参与这项研究,他说,这仍然是早期的研究,但通过识别血液和尿液标志物来预测超加工食品的摄入量是“一项重大的科学进步”)”可知,他认为这种新方法是“一项重大的科学进步”。由此推知,他赞同这种方法。故选B。
35.推理判断题。通读全文,并结合第一段“Molecules in blood and urine may reveal how much energy a person consumes from ultra-processed foods, according to a new study.(根据一项新的研究,血液和尿液中的分子可能会揭示一个人从超加工食品中消耗了多少能量)”可知,作者的目的是介绍一项通过血液和尿液标记物追踪超加工食品摄入的科学突破。

Hector stood in the front of his fifth-grade classroom as one of the last two competitors in the Room Five Geography Bee. His opponent having missed the last question, it was Hector’s turn. If he answered his question correctly, he would be the Room Five champion.
“Where did I put that second sheet of questions?” Mr. Adler whispered while searching through a thick pile of papers on his messy desk. Mr. Adler, though a great teacher, had a reputation of being disorganized with a long history of misplacing things. “Oh well, I apologize for the delay.” said Mr. Adler after what seemed like a long time. “Hector, please tell us the capital city of Brazil.” Hearing the question, Hector smiled. Then, there was the answer.
Later that day in the courtyard, many classmates congratulated Hector. Wearing a proud smile, he greeted and thanked them all. Oh, the sweet taste of victory. As it was getting late, the courtyard became deserted. But Hector still didn’t want to leave. Then he saw Mr. Adler crossing the courtyard and holding a half-open bag full of papers. As he hurried past, an envelope dropped out but Mr. Adler was unaware, turned a corner and disappeared out of sight. Hector picked it up. On the envelope were the words “Fifth Grade Geography Bee Questions and Answers”. Hector stared wide-eyed at the envelope. Before he even had time to reflect on the consequences, he opened it and read the questions.
As soon as Hector had done it, he knew it was the wrong choice. He’d cheated and whatever he did now, he couldn’t change the fact. “What if Mr. Adler thought I stole this morning’s questions too?” Hector thought. “He’d take away my Room Five victory for sure.” Little did he know that one of the best days in his life would be turned into the worst so quickly. Torn by his conscience, Hector was totally at a loss what to do.
Para 1: Before he realized it, Hector found himself standing in Mr. Adler’s room.
Para 2: The next day the entire school came to watch the Fifth Grade Geography Bee.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Before he realized it, Hector found himself standing in Mr. Adler’s room. At the sight of Hector, Mr. Adler mumbled “Where did I put that sheet of Fifth Grade Geography Bee Questions and Answers?” Hearing this, Hector lowered his head. Noticing his nervousness, Mr. Adler inquired what had happened. At that time, Hector nervously took out the envelope, submitted it to Mr. Adler and confessed that he had cheated by reading the questions on it. To his surprise, Mr. Adler didn’t blame him but praised him. Instantly, a wave of relief seized Hector.
The next day the entire school came to watch the Fifth Grade Geography Bee. Having been up late studying, Hector looked exhausted but excited. So did the other competitors. All the eyes fixed on the stage, Hector felt his heart beating fast. Unfortunately, the questions Mr. Adler rewrote were so tough that he was knocked out in round three. But Hector realized that he didn’t feel bad about losing. Whether others knew he was smart was of no significance. He’d set out to learn everything about the world and ended up learning more about himself.

You’ve likely heard that you should live life to the fullest, but how can you achieve this? 36 Here are some ways you can do to start living your life to the fullest today.
Embrace where you are in life’s journey.
If you want to live life to the fullest, start by loving yourself for exactly who you are. 37 You’ve all got a path and things to work out, and it’s just accepting what happened rather than potentially judging it.
38
Your comfort zone is just the routine parts of your daily life that are familiar to you. Your comfort zone brings feelings of safety and security, but it also keeps you from growing and changing. Over time, your comfort zone can feel more like it’s restricting you and holding you back. That’s why it’s important to shake things up every now and again.
Be honest with yourself and others.
This doesn’t mean that you never tell a “little white lie” — what this means is that you always act towards yourself and others in a way that’s true to your core values. When you always act honestly and sincerely in service to your core values, you’re consistent and people know they can rely on you. 39
Keep yourself as fit and healthy as possible.
It’s true that many aspects of your overall health are out of your control. 40 Keeping your body healthy ensures that you have the energy you need to live your life to the fullest. Always look for the most exciting way to do something, whether it’s taking the stairs instead of the elevator or skipping home from the bus instead of walking.
A.Step out of your comfort zone.
B.Stay in safe daily routines often.
C.This means the first step is acceptance.
D.People’s reliance encourages you to be honest.
E.But you can still eat right and get a little exercise every day.
