Embassy area cleaner impresses netizens with fluent English
Recently, video clips of Zhang Jianna, a sanitation worker directing foreigners, have gone viral online. Her fluent English and confident behaviour showcased in the clips have deeply impressed the viewers, sparking curiosity about how an ordinary-looking sanitation worker acquired such impressive English skills.
Behind the sensation lies a decade-long journey of persistence. In 2012, Zhang Jianna took on the role of a sanitation worker in the embassy area of Sanlitun in Beijing's Chaoyang district. A special encounter while working has motivated Zhang to learn English by herself, a pursuit she continues with determination to this day.
“My goal is quite simple. I just want to help whenever someone is in need, whether asking for directions, inquiring about visa procedures, or telling them about the embassy area I am responsible for,”said Zhang.
Thus, at the age of 40, Zhang has embarked on a personal challenge. Without a tutor, she began learning English from her children's textbooks, starting with basic words and phrases commonly used for giving directions.
With no fixed study hours, she utilized every spare moment. While others rested, she memorized vocabulary and practiced speaking. Upon arriving home after work, she would write down new knowledge points and review them until she thoroughly understood them. Over the years, she filled over a dozen notebooks with her notes.
Her memory posed her biggest challenge. “Learning English at an older age, I would easily forget the words I learned the previous day. Persistence is key to learning English. Learn step by step and learn every day,” Zhang said.
When asked about the greatest reward of learning English, Zhang emphasizes self-confidence. “Growing up in a rural area without a college education, I sometimes feared being looked down upon. But every time I help a stranger in English, I feel incredibly accomplished.”
“Tiring, but satisfying,” Zhang Jianna reflects on her work, summarizing her dedication and relentless pursuit of language learning. “To serve others makes me happy, and it's where I prove my self-worth,” said Zhang.
“After retirement, I also want to introduce my hometown in English and promote local tourism,” she said, acknowledging that her inspiring journey has led to this new goal.

BPWD is a startup company, where my workmates and I work our heads off, seeking solutions to various environmental problems. We are what people consider a group of promising young talents working in a promising industry. We are from different backgrounds but we all fit in well with the high-paced life and enjoy all the convenience that Salt Lake City can offer. We pride ourselves on all the differences we are making to this planet but our best subject for lunchbreak chat is what we do as volunteers to protect a lake called Lake Purilence.
We first heard about the lake from my workmate, Bluto, who referred to it as his childhood paradise, where he used to fish, swim and cast pebbles (鹅卵石) with his friends. He described the lake area as one of the few places of wildness that had not been ruined by modern tourism. He had left the place for years since his parents sold their farm near the lake and moved to the city, but he still kept dreaming of going back. In his own words, he was “nature starved”. Attracted by Bluto's description, the five of us working in the same office got on our way to it in October, 2019, taking advantage of a federal holiday.
It was a place not only lesser known but also out of the way. We took a flight first and then rented two cars at the airport. We had to travel along backroads in rental cars to finally get there but the scenery was absolutely stunning. No wonder it was loved so dearly by Bluto. All the beautiful trees and the grass were covered with red and orange leaves and the quiet lake is like a mirror reflecting the golden rays of the sun. A short distance away, we could see a few other tourists taking pictures by the lake and some white birds flying up from the water and the patches of reed marshes (芦苇荡). Amazed by the scene, our hearts longed for a closer encounter with the lake.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
As we got closer to the lake, however,we saw something strikingly inharmonious to the beautiful view.____________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Looking at my workmates,I put forward a plan, which met their immediate approval._______________________________________________

I,Bluto,workmates
①All the beautiful trees and the grass were covered with red and orange leaves and the quiet lake is like a mirror reflecting the golden rays of the sun.
②...some white birds flying up from the water and the patches of reed marshes (芦苇荡).
...the quiet lake is like a mirror reflecting the golden rays of the sun.
A short distance away, we could see a few other tourists taking pictures by the lake and some white birds flying up from the water and the patches of reed marshes (芦苇荡).
第一段首句译文:________________________________________________
________
第二段首句译文:________________________________________________
____
At the shore of the lake we could see litters of plastic bags and bottles here and there.
We decided to work as a voluntary team to do what we can to turn it around.
So far we have been able to live up to the title we give ourselves: Guards of Lake Purilence.
As we got closer to the lake, however, we saw something strikingly inharmonious to the beautiful view. At the shore of the lake we could see litters of plastic bags and bottles here and there. Out of professional sensitivity, we could see what all this means to the environment and to the wildlife. The disappointment and awkwardness were especially unbearable for Bluto, as if his childhood wonderland was ruined. We felt a strong drive to help our friend restore the wonderland and protect the lake before the situation turned too serious.
返回
Looking at my workmates, I put forward a plan, which met their immediate approval. We decided to work as a voluntary team to do what we can to turn it around. Action began right then and there. We walked around the lake to collect litters and put up “No littering” signs. What we didn't expect was that the other tourists joined us in our action. We also arranged regular inspections and agreed to take further actions when necessary. So far we have been able to live up to the title we give ourselves: Guards of Lake Purilence.

The Tibetan Antelope
The Tibetan antelope is a medium-sized antelope native to the Tibetan plateau with a shoulder height of about 83cm in males, and 74cm in females. Males are significantly larger than females, weighing about 39kg,while females weigh 26kg. The males have black stripes on the legs and long,curved-back horns that typically measure 54cm to 60cm in length. The Tibetan antelope inhabits the harsh steppe areas at an elevation of 4,000km to 6,000km. The Tibetan antelopes congregate in herds when they move between summer and winter pastures, but they are more usually found in much smaller groups, with no more than 20 individuals. The lifespan of a Tibetan antelope is about eight years on average.
In the 1980s and 1990s, the Tibetan antelopes became endangered due to massive illegal poaching. They are hunted for their exceptionally fine and soft underfur which can be woven into the luxury fabric shahtoosh known as“soft gold”. Since 1979, the Tibetan antelope has had legal protection under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).Killing, harming or trading in the animal is illegal worldwide. In 2008, it was listed as an endangered species on the Red List of Threatened Species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).Currently, the Chinese government has set up nature reserves, cracked down on poaching, and sought international cooperation in banning illegal trade of antelope fur products.

(Text 10)
And now,the evening news.A traffic accident on the 101 South in Los Angeles has caused a major traffic jam.No deaths have been reported, but four people have been taken to the hospital. In the meantime,we advise drivers to take the 405 North instead. But prepare to be at least one hour behind schedule this afternoon if you're in the area.Better yet, just stay indoors and don't drive at all!
A new planet was discovered early this morning by scientists at the New Mexico Observation Tower. The planet, named NM 451 for now,is about 1,200 light years away from earth.Still, the scientists hope that this planet might tell them something about whether life might exist somewhere else in outer space.A picture of the new planet can be seen on our website.
A dog is being called a hero after saving a three-year-old child yesterday in a park in Glasgow,Scotland.Mr.and Mrs.Darvish, the owners of the dog, were relaxing in MacIntosh Park when they noticed that their son Joseph was missing.Their dog Pancho started barking and making a lot of noise. The dog ran away and kept looking back at his owners. When the couple finally followed Pancho,he led them straight to a small lake, where their son was about to go in the water. The couple was able to get to their son in time, and Pancho got his picture in the paper...plus a nice steak from the meat shop!

Here are four beautiful lakes in the world, each of which can be your next destination.
Lake Bled, Slovenia
Few lakes in Europe come as postcard-ready as Slovenia's Lake Bled. Located in the snow-capped Julian Alps about a 45-minute drive outside of the capital city of Ljubljana, it's best known for the fairytale-like Church of the Assumption, which sits on a pocket-sized island in the lake and has been attracting visitors for centuries.
Lake Annecy, France
Thanks to strict environmental rules set in place in the 1960s, Lake Annecy is an undamaged body of water that's often called the cleanest lake in Europe. As a home base, you can't beat Annecy, which has been called the Venice of the Alps for its series of canals, and the Imperial Palace, which has more than 100 years.
Lake Vättern, Sweden
During a Swedish summer, there are few better places to enjoy the endless summer nights than sitting by the nation's lakes. Among the lakes, the most charming is this finger-shaped lake about a 3-hour drive southwest of Stockholm, surrounded by historic settlements like Hjo, a beautifully preserved town on the lake's western shore.
Qinghai Lake, China
Located in northwest China, Qinghai Lake enjoys a climate with low rainfalls. When looking into the distance from a high place, you can enjoy a photographic view of the revolving evergreen mountains, clear and glittering water, beautiful grassland and groups of sheep.

William Lindesay, well-known Great Wall expert and conservationist, and his wife Wu Qi have traveled across the globe by the back paths, providing their sons Jimmy and Tommy a unique environment for personal growth.
Sunhats, backpacks, sneakers and trekking poles—these are the day-to-day must-haves of the family. This East-meets-West couple started traveling while their younger son was still a baby in 2003. Most of their trips are far from the hot spots recommended by travel guidebooks—heritage study in the Mongolian deserts, a 53-kilometer hiking tour of New Zealand, a one-day climb of three English summits and a six-day train ride from Beijing to Moscow.
“Real travel may be hard, uncertain, uncomfortable, but there's a feel-good factor when you pass a test of some kind,” Lindesay wrote in the family's newly published travel memoir Pages of Discovery.
Lindesay attaches great importance to learning out of the classroom, saying that children might score well on school tests, but that experience of the world outside, in distant lands, with different languages, scripts, political structures, and religious beliefs, is the real testing ground.
Children in this international family did not have the same pressure to perform on school tests, but they had “homework” on the road. Wu asked her sons to write travel diaries, collect tickets, draw maps and summarize travel tips. She says such habits, though they might not directly improve test scores, will pay dividends in later life.
These experiences certainly shaped their sons' characters and influenced their chosen study at university. One read world history, the other international relations. The two brothers also share an interest in historical monuments, and the Great Wall in particular. They are now planning to follow in their father's footsteps with a new 4,500-km hike on the Great Wall.
“My parents view the world as a big classroom, and my brother and I are the biggest beneficiaries,” Jimmy says.

Food waste is a serious problem. In 2010, nearly 133 billion pounds worth of food was transported to U.S. landfills. Food waste is truly a waste to all of humanity. That's because when you throw out a rotten apple or a moldy container of leftovers, you're not just throwing away the food, but all the resources that went into producing it.
Water plays a major role in food production, and as a result, food waste translates to a large amount of water wastage. All foods have a water footprint, the direct and indirect water that goes into producing a certain food, although some footprints are larger than others. In general, meats tend to need the most water for production, primarily because of the amount of food the animal needs. Also, larger animals aren't as efficient in terms of meat production as smaller animals like chickens or turkeys, and the bigger beasts therefore have a larger water footprint.
Food waste has environmental impacts, too. “If you put all the food waste into one country, it would be the world's third largest greenhouse gas emitter,” says Brian Lipinski, an associate in the World Resource Institute's Food Program. Decomposing (分解) food that makes its way into landfills releases methane (甲烷), which is significantly more harmful to the environment than carbon dioxide.
All is not lost, however. There are many efforts underway to cut food loss at every level. The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Environmental Protection Agency recently called for a 50 percent reduction in food waste by 2030. Meanwhile, Portland launched a citywide composting (堆制肥料) program a few years ago. And at the retail (零售) level, the former president of Trader Joe's recently opened a store near Boston that sells surplus food donated by grocery stores at low prices.
Still, waste can't be avoided. There's never going to be some ideal or perfect way to eliminate it all. Fortunately, change at any level, whether it's as a supplier, retailer or consumer, will help ease the impact of food waste on natural resources.

As an ecologist and consultant, I have been involved with a range of ecosystem restoration (修复) projects. It is clear to me, as it will no doubt be clear to readers, that ecosystem restoration is crucial. As we seek to ease and adapt to climate change, and work to reverse (逆转) biodiversity losses, restoration is an important part of the global solution. But while it is widely understood that ecosystem restoration is the right thing to do, there is far less understanding about what exactly it means, and how it is to be achieved.
One of the most obvious misunderstandings about ecosystem restoration is that it is all about action, especially planting trees. It is important to understand that forest and woodland ecosystems are not the only crucial environments to restore. Ecosystem restoration consists of a huge range of different systems from farmland soils and grassland systems to our seas and oceans.
Ecosystem restoration is not always about actively intervene (干预). In many instances, passive intervention can be just as effective, if not more so, than active. This involves simply letting nature take the reins (掌管). But there are situations in which humans have damaged the environment to such a degree that natural restoration is impossible. This is when carefully designed action is required.
Another key thing to remember is that we cannot succeed in ecosystem restoration without local people's involvement or, ideally, their leadership. When a community feels a sense of belonging and a deep connection with the land, this provides a firm foundation for future conservation and restoration work.
While I dislike taking an overly human-centered view, environmental issues cannot be separated in our complex modern world from socio-economic ones. We need to look at people and the planet as a whole and appreciate the complex web of human life and its interaction with the natural world in order to form practical restoration solutions. It is only when we consider the natural environment and human society as interconnected that we can really continue to make progress.
32.Which shows the proper understanding of ecosystem restoration?
A.Community-led efforts should be reduced.
B.Ecosystem restoration involves a variety of systems.
C.Direct action on forest ecosystems should be avoided.
D.The more trees we plant, the better the ecosystems will be.
根据第二段中的“It is important to understand...systems to our seas and oceans.”
√
33.In what case is active intervention a must?
A.Nature fails to restore itself to health.
B.The cost of passive intervention is high.
C.A large population relies on natural resources.
D.Active intervention can improve the local economy.
根据第三段中的“But there are situations in which...when carefully designed action is required.” 故选A项。
√
34.According to the last paragraph, what should be done to make practical restoration plans?
A.Focusing on the interests of humans.
B.Making nature conservation a top priority.
C.Conducting a survey of local natural resources.
D.Taking both social factors and nature into account.
√
35.What is mainly talked about in the text?
A.How people can benefit from ecosystem restoration.

Desertification, the process by which fertile (肥沃的) land becomes desert, has severe impacts on food production and is worsened by climate change. 36
Africa's Great Green Wall is a project to build an 8,000-kilometre-long forest across 11 of the continents countries. The project is meant to contain the growing Sahara Desert and fight climate change. 37 They include limited political support, lack of money, weak organizational structures, and not enough consideration for the environment. Just 4 million hectares (公顷) of land have been turned into forest since work on the Green Wall began 15 years ago. 38
First proposed in 2005, the project aims to plant a forest from Senegal on the Atlantic Ocean in western Africa to Eritrea, Ethiopia and Djibouti in the east. 39 It could also reduce levels of climate-related migration in the area and capture hundreds of millions of tons of carbon dioxide from the air. Several countries have struggled to keep up with the demands of the project.
40 Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Sudan have all expanded their efforts. Ethiopia is producing 5.5 billion seedlings leading to thousands of hectares of restored land. Efforts in Eritrea and Sudan have also resulted in nearly 140,000 hectares of newly planted forest. The U.N. desertification agency says the project will need to plant an average of 8.2 million hectares yearly to reach its goal of 100 million hectares by 2030.
A.But the project faces many problems.
B.That is only 4 percent of the programme's goal.
C.However, it is difficult to work on the Great Green Wall.
D.A quarter of Africa is under threat of food shortage.
E.Some progress has been made in recent years in the east of the continent.
F.Supporters hope that the project will create millions of green jobs in rural Africa.
G.The U.N. says up to 45 percent of Africa's land is impacted by desertification, worse than any other continent.

In the 2010s, 34-year-old Miller travelled around the world as a marine biologist. However remote the location, she made the same alarming discovery: amounts of plastic littering the water and 41 marine life. Miller knew she needed to do something.
Her group called A Greener Future estimates that 33 percent of what they 42 comes from food packaging after organizing litter clean-ups across CanadA. If food 43 were a country, it would be the third largest producer of greenhouse gases. Miller, determined to tackle the problem at the source, envisioned a shop that 44 plastic bags and quit the bad habit of wasting food itself.
In 2018, Miller opened one of the first zero-waste grocery stores in Canada, with her mission 45 the emphasis on sustainability. She named it Nada, and ensured everything was designed to make the zero-waste shopping experience 46 to practise. For instance, the cafe uses food items 47 their expiry date (失效日期) to make baked goods, soups and more. Miller buys from some 115 small local companies. The suppliers must be 48 of a social or environmental responsibility, and just as importantly, they must be 49 to reducing waste in their own supply chain.
Because food sales were 50 in pandemic, Nada closed its doors to the public for 18 months. 51 as the business was, Miller developed online ordering and delivery in a sustainable way. Carbon-free deliveries are made by e-bike and electric vehicles. Everything from olive oil to fresh eggs comes 52 in upgraded containers, which are collected and reused again with the next deliveries.
Not only do those containers just reduce waste, but they get people thinking big, just as Miller had hoped. “They are labeled with Nada stickers, 53 you can see how many times the container has been used,” she says, with a 54 smile. “If you open someone's cupboard and see all of these Nada-branded containers, it's 55 to start a conversation.”

64.答案:views
64.答案:is covered
故填is covered。

I'm extremely delighted to hear that you need volunteers for Campus Art Festival. So I'm writing to apply to be one of the volunteers.
First of all, I am monitor of my class, so I have the ability to organize activities. Moreover, I am easy to get along with, which is especially necessary for a volunteer. Last but not least, I love art so much that I can devote myself to serving the participants.
I am sure that I can perfectly live up to your expectations. I'd appreciate it if you could take my application into consideration and I'm looking forward to your reply.
The words every parent is afraid of hearing were spoken to me at my son's bedside in our local hospital early last year. “Ma'am, your son is very sick.”
What began as stomach pains had turned into a loss of blood that landed him in the emergency room the night before. After testing, it was confirmed that my previously healthy and energetic son now had a colon (结肠) that was attacking itself. It would have to be removed.
Of course, money wasn't the first thing on our minds. His survival was front and center. But over the next few days, as we waited out the lengthy process to get him transferred to a university hospital for surgery, it suddenly began to dawn on me: How would we pay for this? We had insurance, but it was the bare minimum that we could afford. This was happening at the beginning of the year, so our first and most terrifying crisis was meeting the shocking $7,500 deductible (免赔额).
To some families, this might not seem like much. But we are just an average-income family and coming up with that amount of money at once was next to impossible.
I tried to put it out of my mind and keep all my focus on my son and his health. We had a long road ahead of us and stressing over something beyond my control was not going to help the situation at hand.
But, still, it was there.
On one of those endless hospital nights waiting for his transfer, I was texting my good friend Vanessa and let that figure slip: $7,500. I knew there would be many bills to come, but that first seemingly unattainable number kept floating around in my mind. She sympathized and let me get out my fear and frustrations like the great friend she is. Then we said good night, and I tried to get some sleep.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
The next morning, everything would change.______________________

Vanessa came to the hospital. After knowing about the whole situation, she said, “I want your permission.” She went on to say that she wanted to start a Go Fund Me for us. A Go Fund Me for me? Would my pride allow that? “It's not for you. It's for him.” With those wise words from my all-knowing friend, I gave her the go-ahead. Within days, we had almost the entire amount to pay our deductible.

I could not believe the flood of love and support that came from such unexpected places._________________________________________________

So many people that I didn't even realize knew my name were suddenly throwing generous sums our way. The collective love coming through that computer screen was a feeling I had never known. Strangers were helping us through the hardest thing we'd ever been through. After that first deductible crisis was overcome, things started looking up financially. My son was approved for a state-based insurance plan that covered most of his treatments and medications and he is gradually recovering, too. The kindness of strangers changed our lives.
