The needs of plus-size consumers have long been the elephant in the room of the fashion industry until body positivity and fat acceptance movements promoted the slogan (口号)that large-bodied people are not those who are left behind. This size-inclusive(尺码包容)trend has become so popular that it is influencing mainstream culture. As a result, fashion brands have finally decided to extend their size ranges. In 2022, the plus-size market grew twice as fast as the standard size market in both North America and the UK.
Yet, many consumers say fashion brands broadening their ranges are not truly inclusive. “Inclusive sizing means that all bodies are included in fashion, not just the ones who fit in standard sizes,” says Marie Southard Ospina, a UK-based journalist who covers body-image issues. “However, what many designers do right now is pick a number that they think is big enough to include plus sizes and stop. This is even more disrespectful.”
Researchers also criticize that some brands are just taking advantage of the trend. “Brands that used to promote so-called perfect bodies in their advertisements are now trying to get in on the trend by adding a few sizes. It doesn't feel like they really care about plus-size people,” says Tom Burgess, analyst in fashion industry. “If brands cared about large-bodied consumers, then it wouldn't have taken until now to acknowledge that they exist,” he says. “It gives the impression that companies are just trying to gain a share of the market without a real commitment to the community.”
The fashion industry must go beyond merely producing clothing in a range of sizes if they hope to succeed with a body-diverse world. The whole industry has to connect on a personal level with consumers. That involves showing shoppers that they are seen, understood and important to brands. “Consumers care about values, and so they want to buy from brands that reflect the values they believe in. Everyone should enjoy the same range of fashion options,” says Ludovica Cesareo, professor of marketing at the College of Business in the US.

Once upon a time there lived a stone cutter who was dissatisfied with his life. One day, on his way to work, he passed by a beautiful house. It belonged to a rich merchant.
From where he stood, he saw fine possessions, honorable guests, and plenty of workers and servants all set to work. He became envious and deeply wished to have everything the wealthy and powerful merchant did.
Suddenly, the stone cutter changed into the merchant taking over his mind and body. He was aware of the merchant's innermost feelings, thoughts and memories. He felt the joy of owning all the luxuries in the world. He knew the pleasure of holding such a respectable position in the society. Many honored him.
After a few days of enjoying the merchant's life, he saw a king being carried in a luxurious chair accompanied by attendants, soldiers and servants. Everyone, despite of their power and wealth, was forced to bow before this figure that was worshiped as God.
After seeing this, he realized he had been mistaken about the merchant's power and status. In a split second, he moved into the body of the king, mighty and fearless. Then he knew what it felt like to be praised and glorified by the entire kingdom, to hold the power to pardon or take a man's life and what it was like to be respected by kings from other lands.
One day, on a hot summer noon, he was extremely uneasy. His overweight body made the heat even more intolerable. He looked up at the sun and thought about how it was absolutely unaffected by his presence. He then swiftly became the sun, shining with glory, the source of life and strength of every living creature on the planet.

A stone cutter, A rich merchant, A king and The sun
Once upon a time→After a few days of→After seeing this→One day
①He became envious and deeply wished to have everything the wealthy and powerful merchant did.
②... he realized he had been mistaken about the merchant's power and status.
③Then he knew what it felt like to be praised and glorified by the entire kingdom ...
The storm cloud then burst into pouring rain.
The wind would blow against it with a speed and force of the ultimate strength.
He looked down at the artist, the figure of a stone cutter! He then became a stone cutter again.
He continued to radiate until a massive storm cloud gathered below him blocking his rays. The storm cloud then burst into pouring rain. Seeing this, he became the cloud. He felt the incredible power of its existence as it could flood everything that it wished to. Not too late did he realize that the entire root of his power was yet another force—wind. The strength of the rain was not worth mentioning without the wind. And so he became it, blowing off the roofs of houses, and uprooting trees and everything else that came in its way.
There was yet another force that faded the wind's ego—a huge towering rock. The wind would blow against it with a speed and force of the ultimate strength. The rock would stand still and unmoved. He then became it, a solid, dense, immortal and powerful substance on earth. After a while, he heard a familiar sound, which was heard when a rock was stricken by a set of tools. He then felt himself being cut, and reformed. He looked down at the artist, the figure of a stone cutter! He then became a stone cutter again.

Traditional Chinese painting and dance are two distince parts of the art world. But what if they meet each other?
A dance drama titled Poetic Dance:The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting(《只此青绿》)was staged on CCTV's Spring Festival Gala and became a hit.
According to CCTV,this poetic dance program was inspired by the 910-year-old Chinese painting A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains(《千里江山图》).Created by Song Dynasty painter Wang Ximeng at about 18,the painting is amazing in its huge size, rich coloration and the expressive details, reported CCTV.It shows a blue-green Chinese landscape:“mountains and groupings of the infinite rise and fall between cloudless sky and rippling water.”
When the dancers moved elegantly, audiences seemed to be looking at the moving mountains and rivers.“It brings me a pure experience of beauty. It is not only a drama but also an ‘exhibition’.Vast mountains and rivers are coming to life!”Internet user Mo Weisha wrote in a review.“More than a thousand years later, green mountains and rivers still wow people as they did long age.”
Some people even decided to watch the dance again when it was staged in the theaters later. In fact,in recent years, more and more modern shows pay attention to traditional Chinese culture and have received a warm welcome. As for why,it is due to people's great love for traditional culture.
“The younger generations have grown up with a more open mindset. They hug Chinese culture and are proud of it,”Yao Wei,director of Henan TV Station's Innovation Center, told China Daily.

I was 6 years old when my father told me we were leaving the Big Apple Circus (马戏团). Until that point, I had spent most of my life on the circus lot, playing with the other circus kids. The circus, by its nature, is one that has a loose structure. So the early years after my leaving the circus, to sit in a classroom all day felt more like a prison.
But years later, I found areas that interested me. I took the skills I had learned from being onstage and applied them to broadcasting. And so when Boston's news station WBUR offered me a job out of college, I jumped at the chance. Along the way, I found I really enjoyed the work. I became WBUR's news reporter. The flexibility and adaptability I'd learned in the circus as a child helped me do my job naturally and easily in a stressful situation — whether it was a destructive tornado outside Boston, or the Boston Marathon bombings of 2013.
But then a serious infectious disease appeared. Suddenly, for the first time in my adult life, I went for a year without doing any shows. But it became clear to me that performing was what I truly wanted. For me, the circus symbolizes who I am. And stages have always been where I've felt the most free. Some people get nervous before they go onstage, but by acting the character of Jacques Whipper and drawing a stupid moustache on my face, all my social anxiety disappears.
Circus performances go beyond age, socioeconomic status, and even language. It's the type of performance where you can go anywhere in the world to entertain anyone — help anyone forget their troubles for 5, 10 and even 30 minutes. And most importantly, for me, it means coming home.
24.How did the author feel in the early years of school?
A.Curious. B.Fresh.

One of the winners of this year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry was Danish scientist Morten Meldal. When describing his career, Meldal said he started out as an engineer but changed to chemistry because he “wanted to understand the world.”
Meldal's experience may come as a surprise to students. They might believe they have to center their work and school lives in one field to be successful. But a study from professors at Michigan State University shows that is not always the case.
Michele Root-Bernstein and Robert Root-Bernstein (her husband) published their study in the Creativity Research Journal. They said that a large number of Nobel Prize winners can be described as “polymaths”.
The writers looked at past Nobel Prize winners and their students. They decided that when students of winners go on to win Nobel Prizes, some of what they learned from their teachers is how to live a life with many interests. They are, in a way, learning how to be creative.
Having many interests, the Root-Bernsteins wrote, permits scientists to look for creative ways to solve problems. In fact, one important part of science is not discovering answers, but recognizing problems that need to be solved.
The prize winners, the Root-Bernsteins said, transfer “skills, techniques and materials from one field to another.” They said Alexis Carrel won his Nobel Prize in medicine in 1912 by using techniques he learned from the clothing business. He realized that people who used thread to make and fix clothing had a skill that could be used in operations to put new organs into people's bodies.
The Michigan State University professors study creativity. They found Nobel winners are nine times more likely to have experience in working with wood, metal or in the arts than most scientists. The researchers say that unlike many people who spend long hours at work and give up some of their outside interests, Nobel winners believe their hobbies are important to creativity.

There have been numerous attempts to create an all-plastic bike. But most have never passed through the prototype stage (原始阶段).Igus,a Germany-based manufacturer of high-performance plastics, and Dutch start-up MTRL aim to change that with the igus:bike—the world's first urban bike crafted almost entirely from recycled plastic.
Igus CEO Frank Blasé first got the idea while vacationing on a Florida beach in 2009.A conversation with some employees from a rental company made him aware of the challenges of maintaining beach bicycles. The continuous exposure to sand, wind and salt water caused the bikes to rust rapidly. Many had to be replaced in only three months.
The igus:bike, unveiled at a German trade show,is maintainable and rust-free.It can be left outdoors in all weathers and does not require lubricant oil (润滑油) to reduce friction between parts.Since it does not attract sand, dust or dirt, the bike can be cleaned with a garden hose (水管) in seconds.
“As all components are made of plastic,no part of the bike rusts, even the gears —bicycle gears made of plastic were unthinkable for a long time,” Blasé says.
The igus:bike will also help combat the world's plastic pollution. The company says a single adult bike gives new life to about 16 kilograms of single-use plastic that would otherwise choke our landfills or waterways.
Currently,90 percent of the igus:bike is made using recycled plastic. This includes the bicycle's frame, bearings, pedals and wheel rims.Igus and MTRL believe future versions will be made entirely from recycled plastic.
“From ocean plastics to motion plastics—the igus:bike concept has what it takes to become a high-tech ecological product,” says MTRL co-founder Benjamin Alderse Baas.
The plastic bikes are expected to come onto the market in early 2023.An adult model, made entirely from recycled plastic, will cost about $1,400.A slightly cheaper version made using new plastic and an electric bike are also in the works.Igus also plans on sharing its technology with other bicycle manufacturers.

It all started with a simple question: “Can I paint your portrait?”
In the summer of 2015, Peterson and his wife, Vanessa, had just moved to Santa Ana, California. Outside the couple's fourth-floor apartment, a homeless man was often yelling on the street corner, sometimes keeping them awake at night. Peterson, 28, would pass the guy on his way to his job, but they never spoke. What could they possibly have in common?
One day, Peterson was relaxing in his living room, reading a book, when his quiet was disturbed by the homeless man. Inspired by the book's compassionate message, Peterson made an unexpected decision: He was going to go outside and introduce himself.
In that first conversation, Peterson learned the man's name was Faris. He'd moved to California to pursue a career in music, but he soon fell on hard times and ended up living on the street for more than a decade.
“It was the weirdest thing to me,” Peterson recalled later. “I saw beauty on the face of a man who hadn't shaved in probably a year, had overgrown finger nails, and probably hadn't had a shower in close to a year. But his story, the life inside of him, inspired me.”And even though Peterson, a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, hadn't picked up a paintbrush in about eight years, he found himself asking if he could paint Faris's portrait. Faris said yes.
Peterson's connection with Faris led him to form Faces In the Community(FIC), a nonprofit organization focused on befriending and painting portraits of members of the community who are unhoused. Peterson sells the portraits signatured by both subject and artist for a few thousand dollars, splitting the proceeds(收入) and putting half into what he calls a“love account”for his model. He then helps people use the money to get back on their feet. Of course, Faris was the first to benefit from FIC.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Seeing his portrait, the homeless man was moved to tears.
Inspired by Peterson and Faris, many artists joined them.
Seeing his portrait, the homeless man was moved to tears. He benefited a lot from it. He said to Peterson, “It was your help that kept me off the streets, and my heart is full of gratitude. I want to make good use of the money to start a business, and I want to do my best to help those who need help in the future,”Peterson replied, “You are welcome. Actively helping people in need of help is my greatest joy.” With these words, the two men hugged each other tightly.
Inspired by Peterson and Faris, many artists joined them. The artists say they will call on more people to help the homeless. Over time, more and more artists have joined FIC, and by helping more and more homeless people to expand the impact and attract more artists. As more and more people were helped, the organization became more and more popular and was honored by the government. As time went on, FIC sold more and more portraits and earned more and more income, which was widely recognized by the society.
