一、动词-ing形式作主语
1.动词-ing形式作主语的功能
动词-ing形式作主语时,多表示经常性、习惯性的动作,谓语动词多用单数形式。
①Reading aloud is a good way to learn a language.
大声朗读是学习语言的一种好方法。
②Wasting a person’s time is the same as killing him for his property.
浪费一个人的时间等同于谋财害命。
③Being in nature while expressing my creativity was an unforgettable experience.(2024·新课标Ⅰ卷应用文写作)
置身大自然之中并尽情发挥自己的创造力,这是一次令人难以忘怀的经历。
【名师点津】 动词-ing形式作主语易错点拨
(1)单个的动词-ing形式作主语时,谓语动词用单数。
Helping others means helping ourselves.
帮助别人意味着帮助我们自己。
(2)意义不同的两个动词-ing形式并列作主语时,谓语动词用复数形式。
Turning soil,pulling weeds,and harvesting cabbage sound like tough work for middle and high school kids.(2023·新课标Ⅱ卷)
翻土、拔草、收割卷心菜,对中学生和高中生来说,听起来像是一项艰巨的工作。
(3)动词不定式作主语表示具体的或一次性的动作。
To lie to her is wrong.
对她撒谎是不对的。

2.形式主语it代替动词-ing形式作主语
为保持句子平衡,可用it作形式主语,而将动词-ing形式放在句末,其逻辑主语泛指人们。常用此种情况的形容词有dangerous,worthwhile,useless等;名词或名词短语有no use,no good,fun,hard work,a hard/difficult job,a waste of time 等。
①It’s no use exchanging the pink dress for a red one,for she likes neither of the colors.
把粉红色的连衣裙换成红色是没有用的,因为她不喜欢这两种颜色。
②It is a waste of time persuading such a person to join us,for he is not interested in the topic.
说服这样的人加入我们是浪费时间的,因为他对这个话题不感兴趣。
【巧学助记】 It is...+doing sth句式荟萃
(1)It is+形容词+doing sth
It is/feels funny doing sth做某事(感觉)很有趣
It is useless doing sth做某事是无用的
It is worthwhile doing sth做某事是值得的
(2)It is a waste of time doing sth做某事是浪费时间的
(3)It is no+名词+doing sth
It is no good/no use/no fun/no pleasure doing sth做某事没好处/没用/没意思/没乐趣

二、动词-ing形式的复合结构
动词-ing形式的复合结构由形容词性物主代词或人称代词宾格、名词所有格或名词普通格加动词-ing形式,即“sb/sb’s+doing”构成。动词-ing形式的复合结构实际上是给动词-ing形式加了一个逻辑主语。动词-ing形式的复合结构有四种形式:
(1)形容词性物主代词+动词-ing形式
(2)名词所有格+动词-ing形式
(3)代词宾格+动词-ing形式
(4)名词+动词-ing形式
①Your taking my invitation into consideration is what I expect.我期望你考虑我的邀请。
②John’s having seen her didn’t make her worried.
约翰看到了她,但这并没有使她感到不安。
③His son’s winning first prize made him quite proud.
他儿子赢得一等奖使他非常骄傲。
【名师点津】 动词-ing形式的复合结构在句中作主语时,不能用代词的宾格和名词的普通格形式。

三、动词-ing形式的否定形式
动词-ing形式的否定形式通常是在其前加not;带有逻辑主语时,not应放在逻辑主语和动词-ing形式之间。

1.动词-ing形式的时态
①动词-ing形式的一般式多用于表示一般情况,其所表示的动作与谓语动词所表示的动作几乎同时发生或发生在谓语动词所表示的动作之前或之后。
Moving into a new home in a new neighborhood is an exciting experience.(一般情况)
搬进新社区的新家是一次激动人心的经历。
Looking back on this incident made me feel extremely grateful to him.(2023·新课标Ⅰ卷)
回想起这件事,我非常感激他。
②动词-ing形式的完成式所表示的动作发生在谓语动词所表示的动作之前。
Having traveled to that beautiful city has made him want to travel there again.
曾经去那座美丽的城市旅游使他想再去那儿旅行一次。
2.动词-ing形式的语态
动词-ing形式的主动式表示它的逻辑主语是动作的执行者,动词-ing形式的被动式表示它的逻辑主语是动作的承受者。
Being admitted to a key university made his parents quite thrilled.
被一所重点大学录取使他父母非常激动。
Having been reminded to mind table manners made him surprised,but he still behaved badly.
有人提醒他注意餐桌礼仪,这使他很吃惊,但他还是表现得很差。

Betty Reid Soskin retired at the age of 100 as the oldest active National Park Service (NPS) ranger(护林员). She spent her last day on the job at the Rosie Riveter/WWⅡ Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond,California.
As an NPS employee,Soskin tirelessly promoted the stories of African American people and women of color who contributed to the home front effort during World War Ⅱ.She briefly worked for the United States Air Force in 1942 but quit after learning that she’d only been hired because her employers mistakenly believed that she was white.
After leaving the Air Force,Soskin worked as a file clerk at Boilermaker’s A-36,an all-Black union hall in the San Francisco Bay Area.A talented musician,she and her husband,Mel Reid,founded one of the first Black-owned music stores in the region in 1945.Soskin also spent decades working as a staff member for officials in Berkley City Council and the California State Assembly.
The newly retired ranger has been involved with the Richmond national park since its establishment in 2000.In these early planning years,Soskin was often the only person of color in the meeting room.
At 84,Soskin first joined the NPS in a temporary (临时的) role,working to share the understudied stories of Black Americans on the WWⅡhome front.She was hired as a permanent(永久的) NPS employee in 2011.
