Step Ⅱ While listening
While listening to conversation 5.4,fill in the blanks.
Good afternoon, everyone. In today’s lecture, we’ll be 1.discussing education. The questions we often ask about education are: what is education? And what are the main objectives for students to receive education?
Well, what is education? Education 2.comes from the Latin for “to lead”. So, when you are educated you are led from one place to another, including 3.physical, moral, mental or academic. It is a process of facilitating learning or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, 4.attitudes and habits.
While listening to conversation 5.5,fill in the blanks.
Let’s move on to talk about the objectives of education.
For me, education has three main objectives. Firstly, it is to gain knowledge. Obviously, certain kinds of knowledge are necessary not only to 5.pursue certain careers but also to contribute to the world. For example, we need to learn maths to understand finance and economics; we need to be able to read, so
that we are able to 6. communicate and expose ourselves to new things. Besides, education provides another deeper kind of knowledge, which lets us understand how the surrounding world works. It gives us insights into how people think and the attitude we need in order to understand people of different cultures.
Secondly, education goes beyond knowledge; it prepares individuals for a 7.well-rounded life in society. In other words, it provides learners with the tools to develop skills, to think for themselves and to 8.continue learning throughout their lives. For example, education can help individuals develop 9.critical thinking skills, which will prevent them from following uncritically traditional ways and will enable them to act 10.based on judgement.
Thirdly, education 11.establishes core values and prepares you for social life. It helps you to understand what is wrong and what is right, explore the 12.truth and develop cognition, 13.regardless of whether it’s easy or what others’ opinions are; it also helps you learn how to 14.interact with other people in a civil manner, regardless of nationality, race or class. It makes people behave with integrity, regardless of background and circumstances. 15.Therefore, there will be more critical, kind, honest and truthful citizens in society. Eventually, education also enables learners to 16.establish the right values and attitudes, as well as form good habits so that they can become responsible citizens as well.
In conclusion, education is important not only because it facilitates 17.individual development, but also promotes social and national development. Referring back to the 18.definition provided at the very beginning, education facilitates the development of an individual physically, mentally, morally and academically, so that the individual can make 19.effective contributions to social development.
Any questions?
While listening to conversation 5.6,fill in the blanks.
(S = A student J=Professor James)
S:Professor James, thank you very much for the very insightful talk. It makes me 20.rethink the objectives of education. My question is: in order to 21.achieve the main objectives of education, what should teachers and students do 22. respectively?
J:That is a very good question. Let’s first talk about teachers’ 23.responsibility. I think a teacher’s top priority is to 24.facilitate students’ learning. That means a teacher’s job is not just to pass on knowledge and skills to students, but it’s more important to stimulate students’ interests in learning and teach them to think critically and 25.creatively. Also, a teacher needs to support students’ learning by providing rich 26.resources and helping them learn to use the right strategies to make learning more effective.
S:Thank you. What about the students’ responsibility?
J: Well, I believe it is the students’ responsibility to take the initiative to become autonomous learners. That’s why students need to have clear learning goals for themselves and to learn how to analyse, compare and evaluate what is taught. Another thing that’s important for students is that they need to make proper 27.judgements to guide their own beliefs and actions, and it’s a brilliant idea to demonstrate what they have learnt when assessed.
S: Thank you.

Step Ⅲ Post listening
I’ve had my lunch. She/He is quite full.
I’d like to, but...; I wish I could, but...

NeSmith and Maxwell are longtime residents (居民) of Oglethorpe County, Georgia, and they have known each other for almost 50 years. In 2021, Maxwell called NeSmith to let him know that because of health problems, he would be closing his weekly newspaper, The Oglethorpe Echo.NeSmith decided to prevent the nearly 150-year-old local newspaper from being forgotten.
NeSmith remembered waking up at 6 a.m. after that phone call.He jumped into his truck and drove to The Echo offices. Upon arriving, he suggested that his friend think of a new solution.
“Well, what are we going to do?” Maxwell asked him. “Are you going to buy the newspaper?” NeSmith looked up, searching for an answer. Then, a sudden idea hit him.
He would create an organization and Maxwell would donate The Echo to it. After leaving the office, NeSmith called Charles Davis, director of the University of Georgia’s Grady College.
“I’ve got an idea,” NeSmith told him. “I want to turn The Echo into a real-life experience for students at Grady College who want to be reporters.” Davis loved the idea, and he and NeSmith developed a course with The Echo as its foundation. Students could experience a working newsroom which would act as a stepping stone into their careers.
Of course, they needed someone to run the newspaper. Then Andy Johnston, who had been teaching at Grady for a month, appeared, “I believe in the project. We’ve heard about other newspapers closing, especially in rural counties,” Johnston said, “When that happens, it means their only source of news and the only thing that holds people together is closing.”
Johnston teamed up with Amanda Bright, who taught the course. Bright, a community reporter, helped create new digital platforms for The Echo, including an email newsletter and a website.
The Echo also ran on a team of 12 volunteers that worked at the main office. The reason The Echo was able to continue is that everyone worked together — the students, Grady College, NeSmith, Maxwell, and the residents of Oglethorpe County.

Final exams are around the corner—but that won’t stop some teenagers putting in the least effort. This may be because their brains aren’t developed enough to properly assess how high the stakes (利害关系) are, and adapt their behaviour accordingly.
Catherine Insel, at Harvard University, and her team asked adolescents between the ages of 13 and 20 to play a game while monitoring their brains. In some rounds of the game, participants could earn 20 cents for a correct response, while an incorrect one would cost them 10 cents. But in rounds with higher stakes, correct responses were worth a dollar, and wrong answers lost the participants 50 cents.
The team found that while the older volunteers performed better in the high stakes rounds, the younger ones didn’t—their performance didn’t change in line with whether the stakes were low or high. And the older the volunteers were, the more improved their performance was.
When the team looked at the brain activity of the volunteers, they found that their ability to improve their performance was linked to how developed their brains were. A region in the brain, which continues to develop until we are at least 25 years old, seemed to be particularly important. The findings explain why some teenagers are so unconcerned when it comes to hazardous behaviors. They are much likely to drive dangerously, for instance, especially when one of their friends is nearby.
Insel thinks schools should reconsider the way they test performance in teenagers. “This study suggests it’s not a good idea to evaluate school performance in a single final exam,”she says. A better idea would be to use a variety of smaller tests, conducted throughout the year.
It’s not all bad news for teens, though. Teenagers put the same amount of effort into tasks that aren’t “important”, and start to prefer hobbies to school. It could be a good thing, allowing teenagers to learn complex social skills, for example.
4.Why did the researchers set different bets in the game?
A.To meet the needs of different participants.
B.To create the varied risk levels of the game.
C.To better monitor participants’ brains.
D.To teach how to make money.
根据第三段“The team found that while the older volunteers performed better in the high stakes rounds...were low or high. ”可知,研究的结果发现“年纪稍大的参与者在高风险回合中表现更好”。由此可推知,研究人员设置不同赌注的目的是为了使游戏的冒险程度不同。故选B。
5.What does the underlined word “hazardous” probably mean?
A.Addictive. B.Abusive.
C.Risky. D.Specific.
根据画线词后面的举例“They are much likely to drive dangerously, for instance”可知,一些青少年对危险行为如此漠不关心。
6.What should be kept in mind while assessing students’ performance?
A.Examination is not a good means of evaluating students.
B.The items in exams should not be too difficult.
C.It should not be judged by only one exam.
D.Exam-focused education should not be adopted.
7.What is Insel’s attitude to teenagers’ putting effort into “unimportant” tasks?
A.Doubtful. B.Negative.
C.Unclear. D.Favorable.
根据最后一段“It’s not all bad news for teens, though. Teenagers put the same amount of ... complex social skills, for example. ”可知,作者认为青少年花时间做一些不重要的事情可能也是一件好事,让他们可以学到复杂的社交技巧。由此推知,作者的态度是“赞同的”。故选D。
