Instead, she’s studying. It used to be that a summer job was considered a teenage thing. Today, Monaco, who has never had a summer job, is part of growing trend (趋势) of teenagers concentrating on their studies, even during the summer. That’s down from 72% of Americans aged 16 to 19 who worked in July of 1978, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Fierce competition, older workers returning to the workforce and weak economic growth are all adding to the decrease (下降) of teenagers in the workforce. But as schoolwork grows increasingly heavy and homework eats up more time, data suggest the biggest reason why some teens won’t be working this summer is that they simply don’t have time. For college-bound teens, some teachers even advise students not to waste time on a summer job. “Some of my students only have about six weeks off in the summer,” said Shannon Reed, a lecturer at the University of Pittsburgh and a former high school English teacher. “I could never advise that they get jobs during that short break. They should rest.” Young people who don’t work may miss out on valuable skills that they’ll need later in life. Early work experiences teach reliability, financial intelligence, self-control and help people learn to deal with adult situations. But Monaco, who plans to attend Harvard, isn’t fazed by her lack of work experience. “Maybe I have missed out on a couple of life skills,” she said. “But I don’t think it will harm me in any way.” 8. What is the trend of American teenagers? A. They are becoming keen on doing holiday jobs. B. They are focusing more on studies than on jobs. C. They are becoming lazy. D. They are becoming particular about holiday jobs. 9. What is the third paragraph mainly about? A. The fierce competition teenagers face. B. The reasons for teenagers giving up work. C. The effects of America’s weak economy. D. The structure of America’s workforce. 10. What’s Shannon Reed’s attitude towards the new trend? A. Uncaring (不关心的). B. Worried. C. Favorable (支持的). D. Doubtful. 11. What does the underlined word “fazed” in the last paragraph mean? A. motivated. B. helped. C. bothered. D. confused. B 9. B 10. C 11. 根据文章第二段中“It used to be that a summer job was considered a teenage thing. Today, Monaco, who has never had a summer job, is part of growing trend (趋势) of teenagers concentrating on their studies, even during the summer. (过去,暑期打工被认为是青少年的事。如今,即使是在夏天,从未打过暑期工的Monaco成为了正变成趋势的集中精力学习的青少年之一。)”可知,美国的青少年正变得更注重学习而不是工作。故选B。 【9题详解】 主旨大意题。根据文章第三段“Fierce competition, older workers returning to the workforce and weak economic growth are all adding to the decrease (下降) of teenagers in the workforce. But as schoolwork grows increasingly heavy and homework eats up more time, data suggest the biggest reason why some teens won’t be working this summer is that they simply don’t have time. (激烈的竞争,年长的工人重返工作岗位,疲软的经济增长,这些都加剧了青少年劳动力的减少。但是,随着学校作业越来越重,家庭作业占用了更多的时间,数据显示,一些青少年今年夏天不去工作的最大原因就是他们根本没有时间。)”可知,文章第三段讲述了青少年放弃工作的原因。故选B。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章倒数第二段中““Some of my students only have about six weeks off in the summer,” said Shannon Reed, a lecturer at the University of Pittsburgh and a former high school English teacher. “I could never advise that they get jobs during that short break. They should rest.” (“我的一些学生夏天只有大约六周的假期,”匹兹堡大学讲师、前高中英语教师香农·里德说。“我永远不会建议他们在短暂的休息期间去找工作。他们应该休息。”)”可知,Shannon Reed认为青少年应该在假期多休息,因此,她是赞成青少年减少工作的。故选C。 【11题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线词后文““Maybe I have missed out on a couple of life skills,” she said. “But I don’t think it will harm me in any way.” (“也许我错过了一些生活技能,”她说。“但我认为这不会对我造成任何伤害。”)”可知,Monaco认为不工作,缺乏工作经验不会干扰到自己,不会给自己带来麻烦,从而推知,faze表示“打扰,干扰”,与bother意思相近。故选C。 D This month, more than 4 million students across the Unites States will begin with their tenth grade, which is the make or break year for many 15-and 16-year-olds. They are likely to study in completely new schools, and have much more schoolwork and less free time. Even for those students who have done well in the ninth grade, going to high school can be a big challenge (挑战). A study of Philadelphia high schools found that 57% (more than half!) of the students will experience the so-called "Tenth-grade shock" which means that many students will find big difficulties in their study. Some students deal with this shock by avoiding challenges. For example, some may drop difficult school work. Others may experience a hopelessness that results in failing their major classes, such as English, science and math. This should matter a great deal for the teachers because students' smooth transition(过 渡)to tenth grade can have long-term consequences (后果) not only for the students themselves and their families but also for the society at large. In the new economy, students who fail to finish high school with passing grades might have difficulty to get jobs. One study has found that the lifetime benefit to the local economy for one additional student who completes high school is half a million dollars or more. This is based on higher earnings and lower costs in health care, crime and other things. We make these observations (观察) as researchers who have studied how schools and families can help young people to be successful. And we would like to make some suggestions on how to help our teenagers go through the "Tenth-grade shock”. 12. What is the so-called “Tenth-grade shock”? A. The free time the tenth graders will enjoy. B. The new teachers the tenth graders will meet. C. The challenges the tenth graders will face. D. The difficulties the tenth graders have gone through. 13. Who does the underlined word “we” in the last paragraph refer to? A. Researchers. B. Parents. C. Teachers. D. Reporters. 14. Where is this text most likely taken from? A. An open letter. B. A research paper. C. A survey. D. A guidebook. 15. What is the best title for the text? A. The Best Advice for the Tenth Graders B. The Importance of High School Education C. The New and Hard Life for the Tenth Graders D. The Possible Tenth-grade Shock and Its Consequences 【答案】12. C 13. A 14. B 15. D 【解析】 【分析】这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述很多在美国完成九年级学习的学生在进入下年学习时会经历“十年级冲击”的现象。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“A study of Philadelphia high schools found that 57% (more than half!) of the students will experience the so-called "Tenth-grade shock" which means that many students will find big difficulties in their study. (一个对费城高中的调查发现57%(比一半多)学生将经历叫做“十年级冲击”现象,这意味着很多学生在学习中发现大的困难)”可知,所谓的“十年级冲击”是指十年级学生所经历的困难。。故选C项。 【13题详解】 词句猜测题。根据最后一段“We make these observations (观察) as researchers who have studied how schools and families can help young people to be successful. And we would like to make some suggestions on how to help our teenagers go through the "Tenth-grade shock”. 故选A项。 根据文章第二段“A study of Philadelphia high schools ”,文章第四段“One study has found that”以及最后一段“We make these observations as researchers who have studied”可知,本篇文章主要呈现出一些研究报道。 根据第二段中的“A study of Philadelphia high schools found that 57% (more than half!) of the students will experience the so-called "Tenth-grade shock" which means that many students will find big difficulties in their study. (一个对费城高中的调查发现57%(比一半多)学生将经历叫做“十年级冲击”现象,这意味着很多学生在学习中发现大的困难)”以及第三段“This should matter a great deal for the teachers because students' smooth transition (过 渡) to tenth grade can have long-term consequences (后果) not only for the students themselves and their families but also for the society at large. The Possible Tenth-grade Shock and Its Consequences(可能的十级冲击及其后果)适合作本文最佳标题。 How to unlock your talentSearchTo find your hidden talent (才能), you'll have to search for it! For these children, English is not their first language. New York’s Department of Education makes learning better for these students by providing dual-language (双语的) programs. Students are taught in two languages, English and another one, like Russian or Chinese. Math, social culture, science and all other regular courses are taught in both languages. This is different from other students in New York. Milady Baez is Deputy Chancellor of English Language Learners and Student Support. She says these dual-language programs will help children succeed in the future. “The jobs of the future require that our students know more than one language. They are going to be traveling abroad, and they are going to be communicating with people from all over the world. This will open doors for them.” Anastasia Hudikova came to the United States when she was 2-years old. She says the Russian-English program keeps her connected to her country and her parents. “They are really happy about the program. They are really happy that I can protect my culture and my language.” Shuya Zhang teaches a dual-language class. She thinks the program helps children get ready to work with people in other countries. “Lots of factories have been built in China, and many companies move to China. They need people with both language skills. So when the kids grow up, they already have this skill. For Jiang keqing, she likes keeping up her first language, Mandarin. “It makes me feel that I am home because I can speak in Chinese, learn in Chinese, while learning in English. So it makes me feel better and makes me understand more about the tasks I am learning.” The New York schools also offer dual-language programs in seven other languages: Arabic, French, Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Korean, Polish and Spanish. There are plans to add even more languages in the future. 4. Who receive dual-language programs in public schools in New York city? A. Those who decide to learn better B. Those who are interested in Russian C. Those whose first language is not English D. Those who are good at learning languages 5. How will dual-language programs help students according to Milady Baez? Why does Jiang Keqing like the dual-language program? A. It helps her get ready for future work B. It helps her preserve her culture C. It helps her communicate with people D. It makes the courses more understandable 7. The author writes the passage in order to_________. A. introduce dual-language programs in New York schools. B. encourage us to learn more languages. C. advertise the dual-language programs. D. inspire more students to study in New York. C Alida Monaco doesn’t spend her summers doing the usual teenage work, like working at the mall. D This month, more than 4 million students across the Unites States will begin with their tenth grade, which is the make or break year for many 15-and 16-year-olds. B. Parents. C. Teachers. D. Reporters. 14. At one point in his career, Lee realized that love is the greatest power there is. As a result, Lee became a hugger. He began offering everybody a hug. His colleagues called him “the hugging judge”. About six years ago Lee created what he calls his Hugger Kit. On the outside it reads “A heart for a hug,” and there are 30 little hearts inside. Lee will go around to people and offer them a little red heart in exchange for a hug. One day, Lee’s friend Nancy Johnston called, “Lee, take a bunch(串) of your Hugger Kits and let’s go out to the home for the disables.” When they arrived at the home, they started giving out balloon hats, hearts and hugs to the patients. Lee was uncomfortable. He had never before hugged people who were seriously ill, and severely retarded (智力迟钝的). But after a while it became easier. A group of doctors and nurses followed them. After several hours Lee came to the last person, Leonard. Leonard was wearing a big white bib (围嘴), which he was drooling (流口水) on. Lee looked at Leonard and said, “Let’s go, Nancy. There’s no way we can get through to this person.” Nancy replied, “Come on, Lee. He’s a fellow human being, too, isn’t he?" Then she placed a funny balloon hat on his head. Lee took one of his little red hearts and placed it on Leonard’s bib. He took a deep breath, leaned (屈身) down and gave Leonard a hug. All of a sudden Leonard began to scream, “Eeeeehh! Eeeeeehh!”Some of the other patients in the room began to make a loud sound together. Every doctor and nurse was crying.
