Two years ago, two high-school classmates each composed a mathematical wonder — a trigonometric proof of the Pythagorean theorem Now, at age 19, they’ve reported finding 10 more proofs of it.
For 2,000 years, such proofs were considered impossible. But that didn’t discourage Ne’ Kiya Jackson and Calcea Johnson, who published their new proofs on October 28 in American Mathematical Monthly, showing “you can make a splash (引人注目) even as a high-school student”. The teens tackled Pythagoras’ theorem. In 1927, mathematician Elisha Loomis claimed that it could never be proved using trigonometry.
But in 2009 mathematician Jason Zimba announced the first trig-based proof of Pythagoras’ theorem. The second came six years later from mathematician Nuno Luzia. These were the only two until 2022, when Jackson and Johnson presented their first proofs, both seniors at St. Mary’s Academy.
“This proved to be the most challenging task of all,” they noted in their paper. They had to write up their work and learn new skills, like coding. But working on the early proof “inspired the creative process.” Jackson says. Jackson and Johnson only published five proofs and decided to leave another five proofs “for interested readers to discover”, they wrote in the paper.
Publishing the proofs was a big achievement. But that doesn’t mean the story is over. Now, “other people might take the paper and generalize those proofs, or generalize their ideas,” mathematician Lozano-Robledo says. “It just opens up lots of mathematical conversations.”
Jackson hopes the proofs will inspire other students to “see that difficulties are part of the process. Sticking with it, you might find yourself achieving more than you thought possible.”
4. Why are some mathematicians mentioned in the text?
A. To reveal the pressure they put on the two girls.
B. To explain their proofs of Pythagoras theorem.
C. To prove the greatness of the two girls’ achievements.
D. To stress the difference of their views of the theorem.
5. What will be the result of publishing the proofs according to Lozano-Robledo?
A. The proofs will be promoted. B. It will lead to more conflicts.
C. It will shock senior mathematicians. D. Pythagoras’ theorem will be corrected.
6. What does Jackson wish for?
A. Discovery of another five proofs. B. Students’ perseverance facing difficulty.
C. Students’ great interest in mathematics. D. Proper use of trigonometry in daily life.
7. What message can we get from the passage?
A. Well begun is half done. B. It is never too old to learn.
C. Age is just a number, not a state of mind. D. A small star can also shine in the darkness.
C 5. A 6. B 7. D

When visiting a doctor in the future, you can expect to be accompanied by a virtual version of yourself. This so-called digital twin will be a working model of your body that can be shown on a physician’s computer screen. Updated with your latest vital signs, it will help the doctor make an accurate diagnosis (诊断) and provide personalized treatments for the patients.
No matter how unreal this might seem, the researchers at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) already use computer simulations (模拟) of the hearts of patients to test different treatments for a heart disorder. It would be far too dangerous to experiment this way on someone’s real heart.
Digital twins are starting to be seen everywhere. They can not only monitor the health of jet engines on airliners, but also help carmakers spend fewer years on the development of new models by simulating test drives and crashes. All this is being powered by recent progress in AI, which gives twins the ability to make predictions about their physical counterparts (对应的事物), and adjust themselves based on new information.
Digital twins make it easier for humans to solve challenging problems allowing people to have a look into the future. For businesses, this should mean better designs and operations. For society, the promise is also fascinating: personalized health care, and ways to prevent the earth from environmental disasters.
Could these virtual twins go out of control? They might if they are programmed badly, or hacked into. Digital twins will take in mountains of data, some of it wrong and much of it raising concerns about privacy. Yet those risks are a natural part of technological progress. The appearance of the digital mirror world will raise new questions, but its potential benefits are already easy to see.
8. Which of the following best describes a digital twin?
A. A virtual copy. B. A video game. C. A toy model. D. A medical database.
9. Why do researchers at QMUL use computer simulations of hearts?
A. To reduce the time of the heart operation.
B. To use real hearts much more conveniently.
C. To help increase the patients’ recovery rates.
D. To avoid the danger of experimenting on real hearts.
10. How does AI contribute to the development of digital twins?
A. It increases the efficiency of simulations through data analysis.
B. It creates accurate digital copies for medical and industrial use.
C. It enables digital twins to predict results and adapt on their own.
D. It improves virtual models by adding real-time monitoring features.
11. What is the author’s overall attitude toward the development of digital twins?
A. Cautiously optimistic B. Strongly supportive
C. Clearly critical D. Deeply ambiguous
A 9. D 10. C 11. A

For a lucky 32 percent or so of humans, happiness may seem like a matter of good genes. That's because their DNA encodes(解码) for certain personality quality, like outgoing and low anxiety, which are closely linked to increased levels of life satisfaction. In studies of twins, those genetic differences help explain why one twin was happier with their life than the other.
But a happy life isn't entirely determined by genetics. For the most part, your happiness is impacted by environmental and behavioral factors, aspects of your lives over which we can exercise some control. And there are more direct ways to boost our happiness level, too.
Often referred to as “positive psychology, ” a growing body of evidence suggests there are interventions that can teach people happiness skills, like how to be more compassionate with themselves, or how to enjoy positive experiences. Some emphasize reflecting on your personal strengths and values. Others involve thoughts or connecting with others. Admittedly, none will lead to excitement—but they can make a meaningful difference in your life.
A researcher Lyubomirsky compares learning happiness to creating exercise habits; a routine that has to be practiced frequently. One strategy she recommends is writing thank-you letters to people in your life.
But there's no magic set of practices, though. That's why Lyubomirsky says it's important to find techniques that work for you. If a thank-you letter gets boring or isn't your thing, try calling a friend or thinking.
But neither genes nor clinically tested exercises can protect people from the reality that life is hard. During the pandemic, Santos found herself overworked, exhausted and nearly close to burnout. She was fortunate enough to take a holiday and practice the strategies. The experience has been an important reminder for Santos that even the most scientifically supported exercises can't help if you don't do them.
“The strategies I teach work, ” she says. “But you have to make sure you' re following them and putting them into practice, which takes regular work and effort. ”
12. Which factors mainly influence people's happiness most?
A. The inborn personality aspects. B. The education that people receive.
C. The living environment and habits. D. The interpersonal relationship.
13. How can we learn to be happy?
A. Explore our shining points. B. Compare with other people.
C. Appreciate all our life experiences. D. Think for others instead of ourselves.
14. What does Santos suggest people do?
A. Write thank-you notes to their parents. B. Take a break to relieve their burden.
C. Find a method suitable to them and stick to it. D. Read more books to get the practical techniques.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Train yourself to be positive. B. Say no to negative influences.
C. The importance of psychology. D. The secret of personality quality.
C 13. C 14. C 15. A

A good laugh is like a mild workout. It exercises the muscles, gets the blood flowing, decreases blood pressure and improves sleep patterns and the immune system.
We all have obstacles in life and we all make mistakes.
Find the humor in a bad situation. Sure , there are some situations where you are really sad当然,有一些我们真的很难受的情况。
Remind yourself of funny moments from the past.

Digital twins make it easier for humans to solve challenging problems, allowing people to have a look into the future.
