I must confess (承认) that I have a bad habit. I don’t quite know 1 , but for some reason, I just can’t stop 2 at my lips. It doesn’t matter if I’m stressed out, bored, or nervous … I just find 3 tearing little bits of skin off my lips.
It’s not a fun habit. In fact, it 4 quite a bit. My lips are often rough and bleeding because I 5 them so much. But I just can’t 6 . You might ask − why would I put myself through such misery(痛苦)?
7 , many of us harm ourselves in little ways such as this. Some people choose to 8 late and don’t get enough sleep, 9 they’re always tired during the day. Others eat junk food for dinner every night and become fat. Other people 10 even more harmful habits, such as smoking or drinking too often.
The problem with bad habits is that they are 11 to start, but difficult to break. It is easy to sink into (陷入) a bad habit. But it seems almost 12 to rise out of one.
The key is to 13 bad habits with good ones. Good habits can be hard to start, but once you get going, it’s like 14 a bike. Each small push of the pedals (脚蹬) carries you forward. You just have to work at it one day at a time. Creating good habits is the 15 way to stay happy and healthy in life.

A young girl invents a new way to make water safe to drink
Tina Jin, a 13-year-old from the US, has made an amazing achievement in science with her water filtration (过滤) project.
In October, Jin won the top award (奖项) at the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge and a $25,000 (about 180,000 yuan) prize. She plans to save the money for college and hopes to patent (获得......的专利) her invention.
When Jin learned that over 2 billion people worldwide don’t have clean drinking water, she wanted to find a nearly zero-cost way to filter water. Surprisingly, she got the idea from the leftover bones (吃剩下的骨头) on her dinner plate. She noticed many porous (多孔的) holes in the bones which she thought could be used to filter water.
For months, Jin saved bones from family dinners and started testing. She began her experiment by cutting cow bones into thin slices (薄片) and filtering different types of “dirty” water, including black tea and local river water.
At first, she saw only a part of the animal bones worked. She wanted to make the bones more usable, so she ground them up (把它们磨碎). Then, she made a water filter by putting a cloth on one end of a tube (管子) and filling it with the ground-up bones. She used this to filter dirty water.
She studied the data (数据) to check the best pore size (孔径) for the clearest water. Her hard work paid off when the San Jose Water Company tested her filter and said it was safe to drink from.
Jin then did more with her research, using bones from pigs and sheep, but this young scientist is not stopping there. “I want to partner with bigger organizations (组织) and help people filter water using my way,” she said.
( )1. What inspired Tina Jin to filter water her way?
A. A school science project. B. A talk with a water engineer.
C. A documentary about water pollution. D. The porous holes in leftover bones.
( )2. What was Jin’s purpose when she started her experiment?
A. To save money to go to college. B. To get a patent for her invention.
C. To provide clean water for her family. D. To find a nearly free way to get clean water.
( )3. What did Jin do to make the bones better at filtering water?
A. She ground them up. B. She cut them into thin slices.
C. She boiled them in hot water. D. She covered them with a clean cloth.
( )4. What do we know about Jin’s invention according to the San Jose Water Company?
A. It is a useful way to filter water. B. It cannot be used directly in daily life.
C. It needs more tests to find the best pore size. D. It should be tested with more types of dirty water.

Stuck in the mud
(The tradition of rubbing a kind of mud on baseballs makes sense)
In the US, baseball players rub (涂抹) a kind of mud on the balls before games. This mud is collected in New Jersey along the Delaware River. The tradition started in the 1930s. Many players say this “magic” mud can help them win. But is this science or just superstition (迷信)?
Since 2019, scientists from the University of Pennsylvania in the US have been studying the mud. They noticed that it is different from other muds. “It feels like sandpaper (砂纸) when you hold it, but then you can [spread] it like a cream (奶油),” Shravan Pradeep, one of the scientists, told Popular Science.
To understand why, the scientists did some experiments (实验).They used a special instrument to see how the mud spreads and then examined the mud under a microscope (显微镜). They found that the mud is very fine, as if there is no sand in it. It is also sticky, but becomes less so after it dries.
Next, the scientists wanted to see if the mud helps players grip (握紧) the baseball better. They made a material that feels like skin and put a special oil on it, like the kind found on human skin. When the scientists used the oiled material to rub mud on a baseball, they discovered the mud increased friction (摩擦力). This makes it more difficult for the ball to slip out of (脱离) the players’ hands.
The scientists were amazed to find that the mud has just the right stickiness (粘性), spreadability (铺展性) and friction all at once. “We just didn’t expect (this),” said Paulo Arratia, another scientist in the group.
The scientists hope their research will encourage more people to study natural materials. They believe nature can teach us a lot about making better materials in the future.
( )1. Why do baseball players rub mud on baseballs?
A. To help players hold them easily. B. To give the balls a dark color.
C. To make the balls heavier. D. To help the balls fly higher.
( )2. What did Shravan Pradeep tell Popular Science?
A. Why scientists wanted to study the mud. B. How the mud is different from other muds.
C. How players spread the mud on their baseballs. D. Why the mud is useful for baseball players.
( )3. What did the scientists discover when they rubbed mud on a baseball using the special material?
A. The mud made the ball lighter. B. The mud made the ball sticky.
C. The mud added friction to the ball. D. The mud made the ball spreadable.
( )4. Through the experiment on the mud, scientists wanted to encourage _____.
A. more people to protect the environment B. more people to play baseball
C. more uses of mud in daily life D. more studies on natural materials

Riding to victory in style--Chinese rider Hua Tian finds success in France
On Oct 27, Chinese equestrian rider (马术骑手) Alex Hua Tian and his horse Chicko (“三哥骐骥”) finished in fourth place at a competition in Boulerie, France. British riders took the top three places. This was Hua’s best result in a top-level event in eventing (综合全能马术比赛).
“I’m really proud of Chicko. This is my first five-star competition since 2016 when I competed in Burghley, UK. It’s also Chicko’s first five-star event,”Hua, 35, told Xinhua. A five-star competition is the highest type of competition in eventing.
The event was in France this year. It is one of seven five-star eventing competitions in the world. It has three parts: dressage (盛装舞步), cross-country and show jumping.
Cross-country is the most difficult part. However, Hua was sure that Chicko, strong in cross-country, would do well as long as the ground was dry. But it started raining on Oct 25, and Hua was worried about the wet ground the next day.
“Many horses had a hard time because the ground was too wet, but Chicko gave his best,”Hua said.“In the final show jumping round, Chicko did a great job. He finished the round without making any mistakes.”
This competition also marked the end of Hua’s season. He said the horse could now have a good rest and he would get shoulder surgery (肩部手术) that he had put off for years.“I’m very happy with the team’s performance this year, and I feel excited and ready for the future,”he said.
( )1. How did Hua feel about taking part in the competition?
A. Proud. B. Worried. C. Upset. D. Embarrassed.
( )2. How was Chicko’s performance in the show jumping round?
A. He performed very well. B. He made some mistakes.
C. He had a hard time finishing it. D. He was affected by the wet ground.
( )3. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Hua had shoulder surgery years ago. B. Hua will drop out of the sport forever.
C. Hua and Chicko will rest for a while. D. Chicko is too old to compete again.

Covered by snow and ice, Antarctica (南极洲) is the coldest and most mysterious continent (神秘的大陆) on Earth. However, this wild place still attracts people who wish to go there.
The Antarctic is a good place to research the land, ocean, air, ice shelves and biology. The Antarctic also has rich sources of coal, fresh water and seafood.
More than 30 countries have built research stations in the Antarctic. During the past 40 years, China has built five stations: Changcheng, Zhongshan, Taishan, Kunlun and Qinling.
With an annual (年度的) average temperature of - 25 to - 30 C in the Antarctic, scientists there don’t have many choices for traveling. If the weather is good, scientists will go outside to collect samples (标本) of water, rocks and other things. But when it’s too cold or windy outside, which happens quite often, they have to stay indoors. There are all kinds of laboratories at their stations.
However, they do more than just research. The scientists there have found many ways to relax. At Zhongshan Station, for example, there is a field where they can play basketball, volleyball and badminton. Zhongshan Station is not far from stations built by Russia, India and Australia. Sometimes, people from the four stations will meet and hold big parties and sports events.
Although life in the Antarctic can be hard, people there get to learn more about the unknown world and enjoy the beauty of nature. That might be the best part of visiting the area.
1. What resources does Antarctica have?
______________________________________________________________________________________
2. What can scientists do to relax at Zhongshan Station?
