Elizabeth Keyton, originally from Georgia, the USA, married Arjun, a Malayali. She wanted to learn his mother tongue to strengthen their family bond. In the process, she created an Instagram page called “Elikutty” through which she now teaches Malayalam to thousands of people.
“I always loved hearing people speak different languages, but when my mother from Serbia spoke Serbian at home, my father showed no interest in learning it, leaving frequent misunderstanding and communicating problems. That’s when I decided that if I met someone from a different culture, I would try to learn his language, which would be good for us and our family,” says Elizabeth to The Better India.
“So when my relationship with Arjun started looking serious because of difficulties in communicating, I decided to learn Malayalam. However, I found that there weren’t enough resources to learn the language. Most books available were outdated or made for children. A small amount of material was often too difficult for casual (非正式的) language learners like me,” says the 35-year-old. “Later, I struggled to find a teacher suited to my needs and some grammar resources online.”
As an English teacher, Elizabeth used her teaching skills to learn Malayalam. She wrote notes and made doodles (涂鸦) to learn the letters. “For me, the best way to learn is by explaining it to someone else, so I made an Instagram page in 2018 to share my notes and small drawings,” she says. Starting out with 1,000 followers in 2018, her Instagram page has over 70,000 followers today. She is pleased to make learning Malayalam fun and easy.
“I have seen what happens when languages are ignored in my own house. My brother doesn’t know Serbian, which means his family won’t. It’s important to know English as it is a global language and helps when you go abroad, but the same respect should be given to native languages. They are the true way to a person’s heart.” says Elizabeth.
4. Why did Elizabeth decide to learn Malayalam?
A. To build a foundation for her career. B. To improve her relationship with Arjun.
C. To better communicate with her mother. D. To satisfy her interest in foreign languages.
5. What difficulty did Elizabeth meet during her learning?
A. Rejection from her husband. B. Failure to find a native partner.
C. Lack of suitable learning resources. D. Inability to find a professional teacher.
6. What was Elizabeth’s Instagram. page used to do at first?
A. Collect learning tips. B. Assist her in self-study.
C. Practice small drawings. D. Teach others Malayalam.
7. What is Elizabeth’s opinion on language learning?
A. Using social media as the primary tool.
B. Respecting our inner thinking at all times.
C. Always putting the family’s common language first.
D. Treating official languages and mother tongues equally.

Welcome to the Chinese mountain city of Dali, also sometimes known as Dalifornia, an oasis for China’s disaffected, drifting or just plain curious.
The area has long been a hub for backpackers and artists, who were attracted by its cheap rents and idyllic old town, where ancient city gates and white-walled courtyard homes point to the history of the Bai ethnic minority, who have lived there for thousands of years.
But recently, Dali has been filled with a different crop of wandering souls: young people from China’s large cities, fleeing the intense lifestyles that many of them once longed for. Worn out by the high cost of living, cut-throat competition, stressful jobs, and record youth unemployment, they have turned Dali into China’s destination of the moment.
A seemingly inescapable buzzword in Dali is healing. Healing yoga healing camping trips, even healing coffee shops. The therapeutic atmosphere was especially thick at Veggie Ark, a complex north of the old town that houses the vegan canteen, yoga studios, gong lessons and a dye workshop. Eventually, it would also include a “self-sufficiency lab” that Tang Guanhua, 34, was building in the courtyard: a wooden dome, constructed by hand, that when completed would be powered by solar energy, and serve as an exhibition space for handicrafts made with local materials. “I wanted the lab to encourage visitors to try out more sustainable lifestyles,” said Tang.
Some of the new arrivals say they want to stay forever; others acknowledge they are looking just to try out an alternative lifestyle before returning to the city grind (苦差事). Still, even the most cynical (愤世嫉俗的) observer would admit that the city feels more open and relaxing than most other places in China.
“People here won’t deliberately try to assign you labels. You can just be yourself and be seen,” said Joey Chen, a 22-year-old freelance writer who had dropped out of college and moved to Dali a month earlier from Jiangxi province. Chen was sitting in the attic reading corner of a bookstore, devouring the Simone de Beauvoir novel All Men Are Mortal. Downstairs, the walls were decorated with photos of Franz Kafka and Che Guevara.
The question is how long Dali can remain such a harbor.
8. Which factor does NOT contribute to young people’s fleeing to Dali?
A. High living expenses. B. Heavy job stress.
C. Tight job markets. D. Declining salaries.
9. What does the underlined word “therapeutic” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Silent. B. Comforting.
C. Dynamic. D. Mysterious.
10. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Some visitors consider Dali as a shelter from heavy workload.
B. Dali is enthusiastic about pursuing sustainable development in tourism.
C. Dali is known as the most inclusive and comfortable place in China.
D. Visitors are likely to be defined unintentionally in Dali.
11. What might be discussed after the last paragraph?
A. Recommended tourist spots in Dali.
B. Existing problems of Dali’s tourism.
C. Visitors’ impressive encounters in Dali.
D. Detailed plans for Dali’s future development.

Fire season is approaching in the massive Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge in east Alaska where fires have long been allowed to burn unchecked unless they threaten human life and property. But as climate change increases the frequency of these fires, the land’s overseers (监督者) are changing course. Working with scientists, refuge managers have designed a pilot programme to send experienced firefighting teams into remote areas to protect not people but permafrost
The forests of the Denmark-sized refuge cover a deep layer of permafrost — frozen ground that holds enormous quantities of carbon across the Northern Hemisphere. After fires remove vegetation and soils, however, that frozen ground often begins to melt, releasing its stores of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
New research suggests that the resulting emissions, from both the fires themselves and the subsequent permafrost melt, could be equal to those of a major global economy over the course of this century. This could effectively reduce by up to 20% the amount of carbon dioxide that humanity can emit and still meet its goal of limiting global warming to 1.5℃ above preindustrial levels.
A rise in fire frequency can have cascading effects (级联效应) on the ecosystem. Historically, northern forests have burnt once every 70 — 120 years, which gives the black-spruce (黑云杉) forest that dominates the ecosystem enough time to regenerate and rebuild carbon in the soil. More-frequent fires can burn ‘legacy’ carbon that has accumulated over centuries and can also kill off the black spruce. That provides an opening for leafy deciduous (落叶的) trees, which do not promote the kind of carbon-rich soils that separate permafrost.
Fire control could help to put off some of these effects, buying humanity time to address the climate crisis. It could be a few decades before scientists can determine whether the effort pays off, but we have to try.
12. How did the refuge authorities deal with fires in the past?
A. They dropped firefighters by parachute. B. They took no measures if there was no threat.
C. They protected permafrost rather than people. D. They sent well-trained pilots to remote areas.
13. What are Paragraphs 2 and 3 mainly about?
A. The effect of fires on permafrost. B. The numbers of carbon emissions.
C. The advance of global economy. D. The tendency of global warming.
14. Which is not mentioned concerning the cascading effects?
A. More emissions of greenhouse gas. B. More destruction of black spruce.
C. The rise of leafy deciduous trees. D. The increase in carbon-rich soils.
15. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. Addressing the climate crisis is credited to firefighting teams.
B. It is no good changing the long- standing fire control policies.
C. There’s still a long way to go before addressing climate crisis.
D. Our effort will definitely pay off if we protect the permafrost.

One day, I was alone at home because my family had all gone to another city to attend a wedding. Although it was my first time staying at home, I still refused my mother’s suggestion to go to the neighbor Jenkins’s house. That odd old man, who looks like a bad guy in a fairy tale, is often laughed at and talked about by nearby children. It is obvious that he is a person without friends, except for my kind parents.
As instructed by my mother, I locked the door, did my homework first, and then turned on the TV. Just as I was enjoying my favorite animated series, a thunderous sound rang out, and then the TV went out. Even worse, the lights went out and everything went dark. I tried to pull myself together and find a source of light. I could hardly see anything, so I had to wave my arms in front of me to avoid hitting any furniture. I moved towards the kitchen cabinet where I could remember my mother storing some candles for emergencies.
Suddenly, I heard footsteps coming towards my house. My heart was filled with tension. Who could that be? It can’t be Mom and Dad, they have been setting off for half a day, and by now they may have arrived at their destination. That’s the thief! I confidently told myself.
My heart raced as the footsteps grew closer, and I nervously grasped a kitchen knife to defend myself. But before I could even grasp it, a gentle knock came on the door, followed by a familiar voice. “Hello? Is everything alright there? ” It was Mr. Jenkins. How was it him? Did he want to steal things while my parents are not around?
Despite my initial fear, something about his tone felt reassuring. I hesitated for a moment, and then cautiously approached the door. “Mr. Jenkins? What are you doing here? ” I asked through the locked door.
注意:
1. 续写词数应150个左右;
“Can you open the door? ” he replied in a steady voice.

C Lack of suitable learning resources.
B 5. C 6. B 7. D

Healing yoga, healing camping trips, even healing coffee shops.
A. Silent. B. Comforting.
C. Dynamic. D. Mysterious.
10 What can we learn from the passage?
D 9. B 10. A 11. B

第三段中的“Worn out by the high cost of living, cut-throat competition, stressful jobs, and record youth unemployment, they have turned Dali into China’s destination of the moment. (由于高昂的生活成本、激烈的竞争、紧张的工作和创纪录的青年失业率,他们已经把大理变成了中国当下的旅游目的地。)”可知,由于高昂的生活成本、紧张的工作以及日益上升的失业率导致年轻人逃往大理,没有提及薪水下降。故选 D。
【9题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线单词前的“A seemingly inescapable buzzword in Dali is healing. Healing yoga, healing camping trips, even healing coffee shops. Healing yoga, healing camping trips, even healing coffee shops. (在大理,一个看似不可避免的流行词是“治愈”。治愈瑜伽,治愈野营,甚至治愈咖啡店。治愈瑜伽,治愈野营,甚至治愈咖啡店。)”可知,大理的环境气氛是宜人的、治愈的,所以划线单词的意思应与“宜人的,治愈的”意义相近。故选B项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“Some of the new arrivals say they want to stay forever; others acknowledge they are looking just to try out an alternative lifestyle before returning to the city grind. (一些新到来者说,他们想永远待在这里;还有一些人承认,他们只是想在回到城市之前尝试一种另类的生活方式。)”可知,部分来到大理的人只是想在回到城市之前尝试一种另类的生活方式,由此可知,部分来大理的人只是将其当做短暂逃离压力的避难所。故选A项。
根据第七段中的“The question is how long Dali can remain such a harbor. (问题是大理这样的港湾状态还能保持多久。)”可知,接下来的思路应该是讨论为什么大理的港湾状态难以持续很久,即大理旅游业现存的问题。故选B项。

Fire season is approaching in the massive Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge in east Alaska, where fires have long been allowed to burn unchecked unless they threaten human life and property.
B 13. A 14. D 15. C

由文章第一段中“Fire season is approaching in the massive Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge in east Alaska, where fires have long been allowed to burn unchecked unless they threaten human life and property. (阿拉斯加东部大面积的育空平原国家野生动物保护区的火灾季节即将来临,长期以来,除非威胁到人类生命和财产,否则火灾一直被允许不受控制地燃烧)”可知,在过去,如果火灾不威胁人类生命和财产,避难当局就不采取任何行动。故选B。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。由文章第二段“The forests of the Denmark- sized refuge cover a deep layer of permafrost — frozen ground that holds enormous quantities of carbon across the Northern Hemisphere. After fires remove vegetation and soils, however, that frozen ground often begins to melt, releasing its stores of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. (这个丹麦大小的保护区的森林覆盖着一层很深的永久冻土层——整个北半球都储存着大量的碳。然而,在火灾带走植被和土壤之后,冻土往往开始融化,将其储存的二氧化碳和其他温室气体释放到大气中)”和第三段中“New research suggests that the resulting emissions, from both the fires themselves and the subsequent permafrost melt, could be equal to those of a major global economy over the course of this century. (新的研究表明,火灾本身及其随后的永久冻土融化所导致的排放量,在本世纪内可能相当于一个主要全球经济体的排放量)”可知,这两段主要讨论了火灾对永久冻土的影响。故选A。
由文章第四段“A rise in fire frequency can have cascading effects (级联效应) on the ecosystem. Historically, northern forests have burnt once every 70-120 years, which gives the black- spruce (黑云杉) forest that dominates the ecosystem enough time to regenerate and rebuild carbon in the soil. More-frequent fires can burn ‘legacy’ carbon that has accumulated over centuries and can also kill off the black spruce. That provides an opening for leafy deciduous (落叶的) trees, which do not promote the kind of carbon-rich soils that separate permafrost. 由第二段中“After fires remove vegetation and soils, however, that frozen ground often begins to melt, releasing its stores of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
由文章最后一段中“Fire control could help to put off some of these effects, buying humanity time to address the climate crisis. It could be a few decades before scientists can determine whether the effort pays off, but we have to try. (控制火灾可以帮助延缓其中一些影响,为人类解决气候危机赢得时间。科学家们可能需要几十年的时间才能确定这些努力是否有回报,但我们必须尝试)”可知,作者认为解决气候危机还有很长的路要走。故选C。

【答案】Dear Colin,
I’m writing in response to your inquiry about the performance.
Personally, I consider it a wise choice to stage an intriguing play from Journey to the West-Pig Bajie Carries His Wife on the Back. You may start by working out the lines by referring to the relevant chapters in the original novel or episodes from the TV series, after which characters can be assigned and intense rehearsals arranged under professional guidance. What is worth noting is that costumes and make-up also play an indispensable role in a quality play. So, prepare for that beforehand.
Wish your performance a great success! Any questions, feel free to contact me.
Yours,
Li Hua

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

One possible version:
“Can you open the door?” he replied in a steady voice. “I thought I’d check to see if you needed any help.” I hesitated, but the darkness and my fear of being alone won out. I unlocked the door, and Mr. Jenkins stepped inside, holding a flashlight. He quickly assessed the situation and retrieved a candle and matches from the cabinet, lighting up the room with a warm glow.
As we sat at the kitchen table, Mr. Jenkins began to share his funny childhood stories. He transformed from the solitary old man I had imagined into a kind and humorous companion, leaving me with a newfound appreciation for him. We laughed together, and I realized that appearances can be deceiving. When the power eventually returned, Mr. Jenkins made sure everything was in order before leaving. I watched him walk away, grateful for his unexpected kindness. From that day on, I saw Mr. Jenkins in a new light, and our unlikely friendship blossomed.
