Max reads more than anyone he knows. He loves to read during all of his free time. His friends laugh at him because he would rather read than play video games, but his parents and his teachers are proud of him. They say reading is important, and it will help him learn about the world around him. They also tell him it is a good habit.
One day Max was reading a magazine article about volcanoes (火山). He told his friends all about volcanoes and what causes them to erupt. The very next week, the teacher started a science project about volcanoes. Guess who everyone wanted in their project group! Max’s friends weren’t laughing at him anymore.
Max ended up being in a group with Liz, Anna and Josh. The work was to create a poster board with information about volcanoes and to build a volcano model. Max made copies of the magazine article about volcanoes so his project partners could read about them too. They also went to the library to look for more information about volcanoes.
The group met at Anna’s house that night to organize the information and decide what they wanted to put on the poster board. They all asked Max what he thought was most important. Then they decided together to do what Max said. The next night they met at Josh’s house to build their volcano. They used cardboard and modeling clay. First they made a volcano shape with the cardboard, and then they covered the shape in brown and red clay.
The volcano looked great. Max, Liz, Anna and Josh were very proud of their hard work. When they turned in their project, their teacher was proud too. Thanks to Max’s good habit they came an A+ on both parts of the project.

Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine.
The study used information collected from more than 28,000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time after school, including how much time they spent watching TV or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programmes. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale (等级).
Researchers said in the study some of the results were expected. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标)of mental health. as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said. “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
8. Which of the following came last when students took part in the new study?
A. Talking about their lifestyles.
B. Introducing their after-school activities.
C. Reporting their mental states on a scale.
D. Answering questions about screen time use.
9. What do the researchers find about teenage girls?
A. They often have higher levels of satisfaction.
B. Few of them take part in after-school activities.
C. Anxiety has become a serious problem among them.
D. Too much screen time may be more harmful to them.
10. What does the author want to show by using the numbers in paragraph 4?
A Earlier findings about screen time are wrong.
B. High screen time is common among teenagers.
C. No after-school activities mean no screen time.
D. Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities do.
11. Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study?
A. They are good for teenagers’ physical health.
B. They help to improve teenagers’ mental health.
C. They encourage teenagers’ social development.
D. They allow teenagers to become better learners.
D
The importance of working towards sustainable (可持续的)development makes scientists face a challenge in terms of determining the most effective ways to achieve desired outcomes across health, education, poverty, energy, the environment, and many other aspects of well-being, as well as how working towards some of these goals might affect the achievement of others. A study published in the journal Nature Sustainability recently brings together several different connections particularly between education and climate change and evaluates them together.
“We examined how changes in educational attainment affect population growth, economic growth, greenhouse gas emissions (排放)and vulnerability (脆弱性)to climate change impacts — at the same time. Previous studies have looked at the role of education in vulnerability to climate change impacts and its relationship to population increase, and also separately to economic growth. Our study, however, brings these different effects together in a single analysis,” explains Shonali Pachauri, a study co-author.
The team wanted to address two main questions through their research: Firstly, they wanted to determine the net effect of increased educational attainment on the emissions that drive global warming greatly. Secondly, they asked how much less vulnerable people in less developed countries might be if educational attainment is improved.
The findings indicate that increasing the level of educational attainment of a population induces an improvement in vulnerability—in other words, populations are significantly less vulnerable to climate change if efforts are made to improve their level of education.
According to the researchers, one of the most surprising results of the study is that increasing educational attainment tends to lead to a small increase in emissions. A second unexpected finding is the size of the positive effect of education on vulnerability. If optimistic increases in educational attainment can be achieved in developing countries in the future, the reduction in vulnerability, as measured by the Human Development Index, can be quite large.
12. What is special about the recent study compared to previous ones?
A. It stresses the effect of climate change.
B. It focuses on economic development.
C. It analyzes the role of education separately.
D. It studies broad effects of education at once.
13. What does the underlined word “induces” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Proves. B. Discourages. C. Results from. D. Leads to.
14. What can we expect as education levels rise according to the recent study?
A. Smaller poor populations. B. An increase in global warming.
C. Faster economic development. D. A slowdown in population growth.
15. Why does the author write the text?
A. To show the importance of education. B. To discuss ways to improve education levels.
C. To introduce a study on effects of education. D. To call on people to protect the environment.

47. 读后续写
It was the last day of school, and the long year spent in 4th grade finally came to the end. It had rained heavily all day, and by the afternoon it was cold. The sun had dipped below the horizon (地平线)by the time I got home, now totally wet and cold. I hurriedly rushed into my room and slipped into some dry clothes. Once I was changed, I joined my mother in the kitchen. She had already lit the fire to prepare supper.
The wood soon caught fire, and the warmth spread around the room. I tried to get closer to the fire as my body was shivering from the intense cold. My mother gently rubbed my back and said, “I am proud of you, my little hero,” as I told her how my schoolwork performance had improved, I remember her bright smile and the joy in her eyes.
My mother started humming the lyrics to one of my favorite songs, “Heal the World” by Michael Jackson. I immediately began to sing the words in time with my mother. We would always sing songs like this together. My mother knew I loved singing. She always felt sorry that she couldn't afford to pay for music classes.
Life was not easy for us during that period. I was living with my mother after she separated from my dad, which had happened the year before when I was in 3rd grade. Sometimes the nights were boring and tiresome as we did not have any television and our old radio would often run out of batteries. However, I enjoyed the songs that my mother and I sang together. As my mother hummed the words and I sang along, I dreamt of a world where performing on stage was the pillar (支柱)of my life. The turning point of my childhood came after the end of my 4th grade. Our neighbor moved away and left his old piano to us.
My mother was so happy that she could teach me singing at home with this piano.

【答案】Dear Alex,
Time flies! It’s already three weeks since I started senior high. Our new campus is really impressive — there’s a big playground where we play basketball after class, and the classrooms are bright with new desks. I feel excited every time I walk around.
My favorite subject is English. The teacher often shares interesting stories from English-speaking countries, and we do group discussions which make the class lively. I’ve learned a lot of new words too.
But I’m having a challenge with physics. Some concepts are hard to understand, and I’m still trying to keep up with the lessons. I plan to ask the teacher for help this week.
How about your school life? I’m looking forward to your reply.
Best regards,
Li Hua
第二节(共6小题; 每小题2.5分, 满分15分。)
【47题答案】
【答案】 My mother was so happy that she could teach me singing at home with this piano. She hugged me tightly and told me the piano was a gift from heaven, giving me a chance to pursue my dream of singing. Though we did not have money for lessons, my mother said she would teach me all she could remember from her own music lessons as a girl. Every evening after supper, we would sit together at the piano as my mother showed me simple scales and melodies. I practised the songs we had always sung together, this time with the piano accompaniment. Making music with my mother quickly became the highlight of my days, filling our small home with joy and hope.
The next term, I became the lead singer of the school chorus, which was one step closer to my dream of becoming a singer and inspiring people with my voice. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to perform in front of others and to share my love of music. My mother’s unwavering support and encouragement gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams despite any obstacles that might come my way. As I stood on stage, singing my heart out, I knew that my mother was there with me in spirit, cheering me on every step of the way. It was a moment I would never forget, and it inspired me to work even harder toward my goal of becoming a professional singer.
