A New Hampshire woman has raised nearly $400, 000 for an elderly disabled man named Donald, who has been battling to keep up with bills while caring for his wife. The story began when Jenelle encountered Donald at a pawn (典当) shop in Manchester, where he was unwillingly pawning jewelry to cover his bills.
Donald shared with Jenelle the hardships he was facing: his rent had increased, and he was finding it increasingly hard to make ends meet while caring for his wife. He feared they might lose their home and that his beloved wife could end up in a care facility due to their financial pressure. Deeply moved by his situation, Jenelle immediately took action. She gathered $1, 300 from her own savings and contributions from friends and family to help the 90-year-old. A video she shared of Donald receiving the money quickly went viral, recording the moment he called Jenelle “an angel”.
The outpouring of support didn’t stop there. Jenelle set up a GoFundMe page for Donald, and the response was overwhelming. Donations poured in from around the world, bringing the total to nearly $400, 000. In an update, Jenelle shared the emotional moment she told Donald about the incredible generosity of strangers. “I told him that meant that everyone in the world was seeing this and stepping forward to donate, ” she said. “Even before I told him the amount, he was already extremely emotional and couldn’t believe the kindness of strangers across the world. ”
Despite the outpouring of support, Donald remained humble, insisting he didn’t deserve it and that he was “just an ordinary man”. But as Jenelle explained to him, he’s much more than that to the countless people who have been touched by his story. Jenelle plans to keep the fundraiser open until she and Donald can meet with an attorney (代理人) to ensure the money is safely managed. This remarkable act of kindness shows how the generosity of strangers can transform lives, offering hope and security to those who need it most.

Sometimes, the best thing for a penguin is to go with the flow. Magellanic penguins change their strategy for navigating home based on the strength of ocean currents: swimming almost straight back to their colonies (栖息地) in calm waters, but following currents when they are strong — traveling farther but conserving energy, researchers report in PLOS Biology.
From September to February, Magellanic penguins raise their young in coastal colonies along the shores of Chile and Argentina. Adult penguins travel more than 100 kilometers in one trip to find small fish to feed their babies. Such long ocean journeys require not only a keen sense of direction but skills in negotiating ocean currents. which can either aid movement — like how sea turtles use currents for migration — or sweep animals off course. While penguins can swim against strong currents, study coauthor Wilson notes that it’s not wise: “Why catch all that fish just to waste energy swimming against the current?”
To uncover their strategies, Wilson and colleagues monitored 27 adult penguins from Argentina’s San Lorenzo colony using GPS and movement trackers under varying current conditions. After nearly 30 hours of fishing, their return trips — lasting up to 16 hours — always began with the penguins pointing directly toward their colonies, but their following path depended on the day’s ocean conditions.
In calm waters, they maintained a nearly straight line. However, in strong currents, they adopted s-shaped paths following the area’s natural curent patterns. As currents changed direction during their journey, they avoided being carried too far off course. These longer trips not only provided extra fishing opportunities but saved energy, according to calculations of the effort required to swim at specific speeds.
This behavior suggests penguins assess current strength and direction to select the best navigation strategies. Their ability likely originates from a mix of instinct — genetically built rough guides to the sea — and learning with young penguins observing and copying adult behavior to refine their skills.
8. How does the author present the phenomenon in the first paragraph?
A. By quoting a report. B. By defining a term.
C. By giving examples. D. By comparing data.
9. What determines the penguins’ subsequent navigation path according to the research?
A. The distance of fishing trips. B. The conditions of daily currents.
C. The effort required to swim. D. The length of fishing time.
10. What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning “s-shaped paths” in paragraph 4?
A. The method of avoiding strong currents.
B. The consequence of wasting energy.
C. The strategy of adjusting to strong currents.
D. The opportunity for extra fishing.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Ocean currents: keys to penguin survival
B. Magellanic penguins: masters of long trips
C. Ocean currents: calm tides and roaring surges
D. Magellanic penguins: smart current navigators

Olympic athletes pour everything into training for the Games, routinely pushing their physical and mental bounds to the limit—and beyond—for a shot at a gold medal. Yet they are often accompanied by an emotional comedown.
Emotions are heightened by the nature of the event itself. The Olympics is a massive cultural event—a combination of global public attention, financial investment and media coverage. New international celebrities are created, and some competitors’ reputations are ruined during various accusations. Athletes are under the pressure of representing their country and winning medals in front of worldwide audience. “But then all of that publicity and intensity around being an Olympian falls off very quickly,” says Cogan, a lead sport psychologist. It’s more about making a map of how to get to a destination. Once you get there, it’s like, “Now what?”
A 2023 paper explained the identity crises athletes face as a result of overfocus on performance, leaving their non-sporting personalities underdeveloped. In a 2018 paper, Howells wrote that athletes with a greater “myopic” focus are more at risk of the “blues”. “It is common for top competitors to have this very high athletic identity,” says Howells. “They’ve sacrificed (牺牲) every other aspect of their identity for the purpose of being an Olympian. They seem unable to realize that their actions might have negative consequences in the future.”
Efforts to minimize this mindset have helped some athletes to open up more about their mental health. Experts advise Olympians to start conversations about mental health support well before the Games begin. Olympians should also discuss mental health monitoring strategies before, during and after the Games. Athletes and experts say the sporting industry has, in the last decade, been promoting better work-life balance outside of the game. Briana, a soccer goalkeeper, says that her team and coaches actively encourage spending quality time with families and significant others, as well as finding hobbies that feel joyful and rewarding.
12. What is the main cause for Olympic athletes’ mental breakdown?
A. A sense of loss. B. The pressure of competition.
C. The media coverage. D. The audience’s attention.
13. What does the underlined word “myopic” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Ridiculous. B. Short-sighted. C. All-around. D. Unexpected.
14. What might be a fundamental solution to the athletes’ identity crisis?
A. Having higher athletic identity.
B. Discussing their problems publicly.
C. Developing a sense of identity outside the sport.
D. Making greater achievements in sporting industry.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. From Bad to Worse: Athletes’ Well-being
B. Olympic Athletes Suffering from Stress
C. Athletes Adapting to Post-Olympic Period
D. From Hero to Zero: the Post-Olympic Blues

Bossy, dominant, controlling — have these labels ever come to mind when you think of others or yourself? Or have others used these terms to describe you? However, control isn’t purely negative.____16____ Its role in our lives is far more complicated. Let’s unpack it.
____17____ Air traffic controllers ensure planes’ safe navigation. Teachers who manage classes effectively create a thriving environment. Self-control, too, is a cornerstone (基石) of personal growth, helping us pursue long term goals. These all show how control can be a force for order and progress.
But when control changes into a strong desire to be in charge all the time and make others do exactly what you want many problems will start to appear. Some individuals use threats, or even force to impose (强制实行) their will. ____18____ If you recognize such behavior in others or experience it yourself, seeking support from trusted adults is crucial-they can help address the harm.
Psychologists link the desire for control to underlying anxiety. When we feel uncertain or that we don’t know what to do in life, the need to manage every little thing becomes a way to deal with our feelings. And gradually, it becomes a negative cycle which gains strength.____19____
Life’s changes often spark control urges. Physical or emotional changes, family conflicts, or the loss of a loved one trigger (引发) feelings of powerlessness. Transitions like starting a new school or moving to a different city can also disrupt (扰乱) our sense of stability. ____20____ It’s a natural response to life’s unpredictability.
A. This can be a form of abuse.
B. Control has clear positive applications.
C. Uncertainty weakens our self-confidence.
D. The sense of loss can also explain the reason.
E. In such moments, the need to regain control becomes intense.
F. Actually, control doesn’t fit neatly into “good” or “bad” boxes.
G. If left unchecked, it can damage relationships and generate stress.

It was a sunny Friday afternoon. My assignment was to record the 400-meter race in the sports meet. All the students in our class were sitting anxiously except one, a tall handsome boy named Tommy who was considered the one most likely to win the race. Even, unlike other competitors, he was quite relaxed, standing beside the track and stretching himself.
“Tommy! I bet you’ll win.” I yelled at him. “Just wait and see!” A big smile spread across his face.
“May I have your attention, please? All the athletes are requested to proceed to the registration office.” A gentle voice caught our attention.
“Tommy, your show time!” I shouted and gave him a thumb-up.
Then, I saw all the athletes went to register, preparing for the game. Soon they were all on the starting line. Taking the best recording location, I raised my smartphone, ready to shoot.
With the loud sound of the starting gun, all the competitors threw themselves forwards from the starting line like arrows. Tommy quickly took the lead with his excellent explosive power from long-term training. But there was one problem for me-I had to spare every effort to control my excitement in order to keep my shooting picture stable.
“Come on, Tommy!” Still, I could hear the cheers of our classmates higher and higher. It seemed that Tommy had heard the powerful shouts and became full of strength. He kept adjusting his breath, maintaining a steady rhythm, and approaching the finish line step by step.
Finally, with the cheers of the audience, Tommy crossed the finish line almost at the same time with the second-place finisher. How I wish I could rush to him and give him a big bear hug! But I could not. I had to finish recording the whole race, so I waited until the last competitor crossed the finish line. Suddenly, I noticed there was an unusual noise from the crowd.
注意:
Tommy was ranked second on the scoreboard.

A 9. B 10. C 11. D

第一段开头“Sometimes, the best thing for a penguin is to go with the flow.(有时候,对企鹅来说,最好的办法就是顺势而为)”提出企鹅“随波逐流”的现象,随后“Magellanic penguins change their strategy for navigating home based on the strength of ocean currents: swimming almost straight back to their colonies(栖息地)in calm waters, but following currents when they are strong — traveling farther but conserving energy, researchers report in PLOS Biology.(研究人员在《公共科学图书馆·生物学》杂志上报告说,麦哲伦企鹅会根据洋流的强度改变它们回家的策略:在平静的水域里,它们几乎会直接游回自己的栖息地,但在洋流很强的时候,它们会跟随洋流——走得更远,但会节省能量)”明确说明“researchers report in PLOS Biology”,即通过引用研究报告呈现这一现象。故选A。
第三段中“After nearly 30 hours of fishing, their return trips — lasting up to 16 hours — always began with the penguins pointing directly toward their colonies, but their following path depended on the day’s ocean conditions.(在将近30个小时的捕鱼后,它们的回程——长达16个小时——总是以企鹅直接指向它们的栖息地开始,但它们的路线取决于当天的海洋状况)”提到,企鹅返程最初都指向栖息地,但它们的路线取决于当天的海洋状况,第四段中“In calm waters, they maintained a nearly straight line. However, in strong currents, they adopted s-shaped paths following the area’s natural curent patterns. As currents changed direction during their journey, they avoided being carried too far off course.(在平静的水面上,它们几乎保持直线行驶。然而,在强烈的水流中,它们采用了S形的路径,遵循该地区的自然水流模式)”进一步说明平静水域和强洋流中路径不同。由此可知,后续导航路径由“每日洋流状况”决定。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。第四段中“However, in strong currents, they adopted s-shaped paths following the area’s natural curent patterns. As currents changed direction during their journey, they avoided being carried too far off course. These longer trips not only provided extra fishing opportunities but saved energy, according to calculations of the effort required to swim at specific speeds.(然而,在强烈的水流中,它们采用了S形的路径,遵循该地区的自然水流模式。由于洋流在航行中改变了方向,它们避免被带离航线太远。根据对以特定速度游泳所需努力的计算,这些较长的行程不仅提供了额外的捕鱼机会,而且节省了能量)”指出,在强洋流中企鹅采用“S形路径”,并提到这种路径遵循该地区的自然水流模式、节省能量,可见这是企鹅适应强洋流的策略。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据全文内容,结合第一段中“Magellanic penguins change their strategy for navigating home based on the strength of ocean currents: swimming almost straight back to their colonies (栖息地) in calm waters, but following currents when they are strong — traveling farther but conserving energy, researchers report in PLOS Biology.(研究人员在《公共科学图书馆·生物学》杂志上报告说,麦哲伦企鹅会根据洋流的强度改变它们回家的策略:在平静的水域里,它们几乎会直接游回自己的栖息地,但在洋流很强的时候,它们会跟随洋流——走得更远,但会节省能量)”可知,文章核心是麦哲伦企鹅根据洋流调整导航策略,体现其“聪明的洋流导航者”特质。

A 13. B 14. C 15. D

根据第二段“‘But then all of that publicity and intensity around being an Olympian falls off very quickly,’ says Cogan, a lead sport psychologist. It’s more about making a map of how to get to a destination. Once you get there, it’s like, ‘Now what?’(“但是,作为一名奥运选手所受到的关注和压力很快就会消失,”首席运动心理学家科根说。这更像是绘制一张如何到达目的地的地图。一旦你到达那里,就会想,“接下来呢?”)”可知,奥运会运动员精神崩溃的主要原因是失落感。故选A。
根据第三段“A 2023 paper explained the identity crises athletes face as a result of overfocus on performance, leaving their non-sporting personalities underdeveloped. In a 2018 paper, Howells wrote that athletes with a greater “myopic” focus are more at risk of the ‘blues’.(2023年的一篇论文解释了运动员面临的身份危机,这是由于过度关注表现,导致他们的非体育个性不发达。豪威尔斯在2018年的一篇论文中写道,“myopic”程度更高的运动员患‘忧郁’的风险更大。)”以及划线词后“They’ve sacrificed (牺牲) every other aspect of their identity for the purpose of being an Olympian. They seem unable to realize that their actions might have negative consequences in the future.(“为了成为一名奥运选手,他们牺牲了自己身份的所有其他方面。他们似乎没有意识到他们的行为可能会在未来产生负面影响。)”可知,奥运会运动员目光越短浅越容易忧郁。myopic意为“目光短浅的”。故选B。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Athletes and experts say the sporting industry has, in the last decade, been promoting better work-life balance outside of the game. Briana, a soccer goalkeeper, says that her team and coaches actively encourage spending quality time with families and significant others, as well as finding hobbies that feel joyful and rewarding.(运动员和专家表示,在过去十年中,体育产业一直在促进运动之外更好的工作与生活平衡。布里安娜是一名足球守门员,她说她的团队和教练积极鼓励与家人和重要的人共度美好时光,并找到让人感到快乐和有意义的爱好。)”可知,解决运动员身份危机的根本办法是在运动之外培养一种认同感。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Athletes are under the pressure of representing their country and winning medals in front of worldwide audience. ‘But then all of that publicity and intensity around being an Olympian falls off very quickly,’ says Cogan, a lead sport psychologist. It’s more about making a map of how to get to a destination. Once you get there, it’s like, ‘Now what?’(运动员们承受着代表国家、在全世界观众面前赢得奖牌的压力。“但是,作为一名奥运选手所受到的关注和压力很快就会消失,”首席运动心理学家科根说。这更像是绘制一张如何到达目的地的地图。一旦你到达那里,就会想,“接下来呢?”)”可知,本文主要讲述了备受瞩目的奥运会运动员在奥运会后对自己的身份认同感到迷失,感到忧郁,所以D“From Hero to Zero: the Post-Olympic Blues(从英雄到归零:后奥运时期的忧郁)”适合做最佳标题。
Self-control too, is a cornerstone (基石) of personal growth, helping us pursue long term goals. These all show how control can be a force for order and progress.
But when control changes into a strong desire to be in charge all the time and make others do exactly what you want, many problems will start to appear.
F 17. B 18. A 19. G 20. E
上文“However, control isn’t purely negative. (然而,控制并不完全是负面的)”及下文“ Its role in our lives is far more complicated. (它在我们生活中的作用要复杂得多)”说明控制的作用很复杂,空处承上启下,选项F中的“doesn’t fit neatly into “good” or “bad” boxes”与下文中的“far more complicated”相呼应。
下文“These all show how control can be a force for order and progress. (这些都表明,控制可以成为秩序与进步的推动力)”说明控制是有积极作用的,空处引出下文,选项B中的“positive”与下文中的“a force for order and progress”相呼应。所以B选项“控制有明显的积极应用”,符合语境。故选B。
【18题详解】
上文“Some individuals use threats, or even force to impose (强制实行) their will. (有些人会使用威胁,甚至暴力来强行推行自己的意志)”及下文“If you recognize such behavior in others or experience it yourself, seeking support from trusted adults is crucial - they can help address the harm. (如果你在他人的行为中识别出这种表现,或自己正经历这种情况,向可信赖的成年人寻求帮助至关重要——他们可以帮助应对由此造成的伤害)”说明控制欲失控,是一种虐待,经历的人应该向别人寻求帮助,空处承上启下,选项A中的“abuse”与下文中的“such behavior”相呼应。所以A选项“这可能是一种形式的虐待。”,符合语境。故选A。
上文“When we feel uncertain or that we don’t know what to do in life, the need to manage every little thing becomes a way to deal with our feelings. And gradually, it becomes a negative cycle which gains strength. (当我们感到不确定,或对生活感到迷茫时,掌控每一个细节的需求就成了应对情绪的一种方式。久而久之,这会形成一个不断强化的负面循环)”说明我们不能放任这种负面情绪不管,选项G中的“it”与上文中的“the need to manage every little thing”相呼应。所以G选项“如果不加以控制,它可能会破坏人际关系并引发压力”,符合语境。故选G。
【20题详解】
上文“Life’s changes often spark control urges. Physical or emotional changes, family conflicts, or the loss of a loved one trigger (引发) feelings of powerlessness. Transitions like starting a new school or moving to a different city can also disrupt (扰乱) our sense of stability. (生活中的变化常常会激起控制的需求。身体或情绪上的变化、家庭冲突,或失去所爱之人,都会引发无力感。像开始上新学校或搬到不同城市这样的转变,也会扰乱我们的稳定感)”及下文“It’s a natural response to life’s unpredictability. (这是对生活不可预测性的一种自然反应)”说明生活中的变化常常会让控制的需求增多,空处承上启下,选项E中的“In such moments”与上文中的“Physical or emotional changes, family conflicts, or the loss of a loved one”及“Transitions”相呼应。

44. recorded
45. the
句子已有谓语动词“is made of”,所以“measure”要用非谓语形式。“measure”与逻辑主语“the statue”之间是主动关系,用现在分词作状语,句首单词首字母大写。故填Measuring。
【37题详解】
考查固定短语。句意:在展示雕像的大厅里还展出了清朝的壁画,讲述了丝绸之路的故事。“on show”是固定短语,意为“展出;展览”,符合句意。故填on。
故填their。
故填is being planned。
故填the。

Dear Mrs White,
I’m more than glad to offer my suggestions on English extracurricular activities to spark our interest in learning. My top recommendations are a weekly English movie night and a monthly “English Corner” discussion.
Watching classic English movies, like The Sound of Music, lets us pick up natural dialogues and learn about Western culture while we enjoy interesting stories — way more fun than textbooks. The English Corner, where we talk about daily topics like hobbies or travel, can reduce our fear of speaking and help us practice fluently with peers. These activities will make English learning lively and engaging.
Hope my ideas are useful for you.
Yours,
Li Hua

注意:

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Tommy was ranked second on the scoreboard. Feeling puzzled Tommy immediately found the judge and pointed out this mistake politely. However, the second-place finisher insisted he was the winner. No one could tell exactly what had happened. Tommy was at a loss what to do, feeling frustrated. Then it suddenly occurred to me that I had recorded the whole process. Rushing to the judge, I showed him the video, which clarified the fact that it was Tommy who first arrived.
The judge admitted the error and announced Tommy was the real champion. After learning the truth, the audience broke into thunderous applause. Tommy shouldered his way through the crowd, gate ring me in his arms with a proud smile on his face. We both knew this was not just a victory of a race, but also a victory of sticking to the truth and daring to fight for it in the face of injustice.
