Alex is my regular hiking, ice-climbing, and mountain-biking partner. We were on a one-night trip, and what he brought for dinner was just rice. Literally nothing else.
This was not because he was trying to pack as light as possible, nor was it because he was broke. I tried to convince him to at least add some soy sauce (酱油) to it. But no, Alex wasn’t having any of it. “I don’t need it,” he said simply.
Now, if he was talking only about outdoors’ meals, I almost understood the reason. When you’re ravenous after a day of burning off calories walking or climbing or backcountry skiing in the mountains, how awesome do things taste! Just as the saying goes, hunger is the best sauce. And I agree. Absolutely.
But there’s more to it than that. Last month, I went down the coast car camping with my family. One morning, my wife made a statement. “I don’t see the point,” she said. “It’s so much work, camping. But the views at home are better. The beds are more comfortable. It’s more peaceful. And at home, the food is better.” I’ll admit she’s right about the first three. But the food? We had a simple pasta one night, snags another, chicken curry the third, but they all tasted good. Better than at home. And it wasn’t simply that we were hungry; it was because we were camping.
The real point I want to convey is that meals taste particularly good when I’m camping because it reminds me of things that are easily overlooked at home, where I can just go to the cupboard or the supermarket and grab whatever I feel like. When you’re camping, life is reduced to its essentials, and I’m reminded of how privileged most of us are to be dry, warm and fed. More importantly, I’m reminded that, sadly, not everyone is as fortunate as we are. And I’m reminded that, as a society, we should do better for them.
24.Why did Alex bring only rice for dinner on the trip?
A.He didn’t like soy sauce. B.He preferred to travel light.
C.He couldn’t afford a better meal. D.He thought simple food enough outdoors.
25.What does the underlined word “ravenous” in the third paragraph mean?
A.Exhausted. B.Starving. C.Charming. D.Refreshed.
26.What makes the author sad in the last paragraph?
A.Some people lack the basic necessities of life. B.Some people fail to appreciate what they have.
C.People easily forget the beauty of simple things. D.People easily quit camping due to its discomfort.
27.What message does the author want to convey in the passage?
A.Camping is a test of adaptability to challenges. B.Camping is a bonding experience for family.
C.Camping is a reminder of our good life. D.Camping is a chance to enjoy a feast.

Generations of parents have told their children to practice their musical instruments. Parents have good reasons to lay emphasis on their children’s musical education since learning an instrument is not only associated with cognitive (认知的) performance but also intelligence scores in children. But does this musicality translate to better cognition later in life?
A recent study in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry investigated this question by asking middle-aged and older people to complete a questionnaire on their lifetime musical experience before completing cognitive thinking tests. The results showed that musical people had better memory and executive function — the ability to stay focused on tasks, make a plan, and have self-control — than those with less or no musicality.
A good memory is important for playing a musical instrument, such as playing music from memory, and this seems to translate to people’s cognitive performance. Similarly, executive function is required when playing an instrument, and it translates to improved cognitive performance too.
Although most people in the study played an instrument for only a few years, this finding was similar, regardless of which instrument people played, or the level of musical proficiency (熟练) people acquired.
What makes a difference, however, is whether people still play an instrument or only played in the past. Those who still play an instrument show higher cognitive performance. This makes sense as continued engagement in cognitively stimulating activities would result in continued brain health benefits while having played the guitar for three years at primary school might not have such a big impact on the cognitive performance later in life.
28.Why do parents stress children’s musical education?
A.It can boost brain power. B.It is linked to mental health.
C.It helps children go to college. D.It is key to academic performance.
29.How does playing an instrument promote cognitive development?
A.By stimulating the nerve cells. B.By developing great musicality.
C.By improving one’s concentration. D.By bettering one’s learning ability.
30.What influences cognitive performance according to the study?
A.Practicing continuity that people keep.
B.Different instruments that people play.
C.Musical proficiency that people acquire.
D.Live performances that people engage in.
31.What message does the author convey in the text?
A.Musicality leads to success.
B.Music affects children’s growth.
C.Instrument players have healthier brains.
D.Playing instruments enhances cognition.

Given the popularity of inexpensive food that promotes overeating, it makes sense that we try to guard against “cheap and unhealthy” food in an effort to be healthy. But we may be overcorrecting, forgetting that “cheap and healthy” food exists, too.
According to a recent study, many people believe that healthy food must be more expensive than unhealthy food, and that healthy food just needs to be expensive. In fact, the researcher found that a high-price tag (标签) will even convince consumers that a certain food is healthful. “It’s concerning. The findings suggest that price of food alone can affect our understanding of what is healthy,’’ Rebecca Reczek, researcher of the study, said.
According to Reczek, the purpose of the study was to examine the popular belief, also known as a lay (非专业的) theory, that eating healthy food means spending more money.
In one experiment, Reczek gave participants a new food product. Some participants were told the product was very healthy. Others were told the product had little nutritional value. Participants who were told the product was good for them rated it as pricier (更昂贵的) than those who thought it was unhealthy. In another experiment, participants were given a health food bar labeled (用标签标明) as “the healthiest protein bar on the planet”. Some participants were told the bar cost just $0.99, while others were told the bar was $4.
And here’s what happened: The people who were given the “cheaper” bar needed to read more reviews about the product when it was priced at a lower price point in order to trust that it was healthy.
The idea that we all believe healthy food needs to be more expensive works against Reczek. “We don’t have to be misled,” she said. “We can compare nutrition labels and we can do research before we go to the grocery store. We can use facts rather than our intuition (直觉).”
32.Which of the following statements reflects the author’s opinion?
A.The cheaper food is, the less people will eat.
B.People’s health awareness needs improving.
C.The price of food can’t reflect its health degree.
D.It is wrong of people to seek health at all costs.
33.Why did Reczek carry out the study?
A.To prove her belief. B.To test a lay theory.
C.To promote healthy eating. D.To examine people’s idea of health.
34.What does Reczek suggest we do?
A.Ignore nutrition labels. B.Believe our intuition.
C.Shop smartly. D.Ignore the price tag.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A.People falsely believe pricier food is healthier
B.Don’t be misled by price tags any more
C.What influences our choices when we buy food?
D.How to eat cheaply and healthily?
With the widespread use of computers, increasing students type with a greater-than-ever reliance on them to take notes and write papers. 36 Some parents of younger students are dismayed that their children are not just encouraged but required to take laptops to class. Additionally, university professors complain of rampant (泛滥的) distraction in classrooms, with students reading and messaging instead of listening to lectures.
A line of research shows the benefits of an “innovation” that predates computers handwriting. Especially, studies have found that writing on paper can better students’ performance. 37 For learning materials by note (死记硬背), from the shapes of letters to the irregularity of English spelling, the benefits of using a pen or pencil lie in how the motor and sensory memory of putting words on paper reinforces that material.
38 In a study from 2014 by Pam Mueller and Danny Oppenheimer, students typing wrote down almost twice as many words and more passages word for word from lectures. It suggested they didn’t understand so much as rapidly copying the material. However, handwriting — which takes longer for nearly all university-level students — forces note-takers to transform ideas into their own words. 39 Those taking notes by hand also allows students to perform better on tests when they are later able to study from their notes.
Many studies have confirmed handwriting’s benefits, and policymakers have taken note. For instance, about half the states in America have required more teaching of handwriting. 40 Although nearly all will eventually need typing skills, in an age of typing, handwriting still matters.
A.Studies have found that handwriting can benefit a lot.
B.This aids conceptual understanding at the moment of writing.
C.But today a different debate is raging about the dangers of typing.
D.In Sweden there is a push for more handwriting books and fewer devices.
E.However, several schools in America have gone so far to ban most laptops.
F.It helps students recall a random series of words and grasp complicated concepts better.
G.One of the best-demonstrated advantages of handwriting seems to be in superior note-taking.

Biang Biang noodles’ popularity in overseas markets, a regional food from China’s northwestern Shaanxi province, shows how Chinese cuisine is carving out a market for dishes 56 (represent) of a wider range of Chinese food culture, the BBC reported.

My husband, John, 76, arrived back from the shops. “Got your favorite magazine,” he said.
“Good on you, love,” I replied.
It was our weekly routine. Every Thursday morning, John bought me a Take 5, and I would do the puzzles to get my brain going. Then, before I went to bed at night, I read all the stories. I’ve been doing this since it was launched in 1998.
As John handed me the magazine, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of familiarity and comfort. The smell of the fresh ink and the pages always brought me a moment of peace. I looked through the cover, which featured a smiling couple enjoying their retirement. It was a far cry from our current situation, but it gave me hope.
John’s health had been a constant worry for years. His medical bills piled up month after month. Our savings had dwindled (减少), and every penny we earned seemed to go straight to the hospital. The stress of our financial struggles weighed heavily on both of us, but we tried our best to stay positive.
I settled into my favorite armchair and opened the magazine to the “Magazine Millionaire” contest page. The words “Win $ 100,000” seemed to jump off the page. I had entered this contest every month for years, but I never really believed I could win. It was more of a routine, something to keep me busy and hopeful.
John sat down beside me and put his arm around my shoulders. “You never know, Janette. Maybe this time will be our lucky break.”
I smiled at him and nodded. “Yeah, maybe.”
I filled in the entry form carefully, answering the questions about my favorite Take 5 stories and puzzles. I added a little note at the bottom, thanking the magazine for their support and mentioning how much it meant to us during these tough times. With a deep breath. I sealed (封上) the envelope and handed it to John to mail.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
A few weeks later, as I was doing the dishes ,the phone rang.

W: Studies show that napping can improve your well-being if done right. However, napping for too long can end up having a negative impact on your overall health, and may also shorten your lifespan. Chelsie Rohrscheib, head sleep expert at sleep testing firm Wesper, told Newsweek that people who take long naps are likely to get low-quality sleep at night. She said, “Poor sleep at night has major negative effects on health. Additionally, we also see high rates of sleep disorders in people who require long naps during the day. Another consideration is that people who need long naps are generally pretty tired and lazy during the day, and therefore they’re more likely to spend a lot of time sitting down.” According to Raj Dasgupta, chief medical adviser for Sleep Advisor, needing long naps may often be a sign that something is wrong with your body. “If you find yourself needing long or multiple naps to get through the day, you might have a sleep disorder or medical condition,” he said. According to Dasgupta, if you feel tired and have an opportunity to take a short nap in the early afternoon, then napping can be a beneficial way to improve your productivity, although he warns against getting into the habit of taking naps routinely. “If you get a good sleep at night and feel energetic during the day, you most likely do not need to nap,” he added.

【答案】24.D 25.B 26.A 27.C
根据第二段“But no, Alex wasn’t having any of it. “I don’t need it,” he said simply.(但不,亚历克斯根本不接受我的建议。“我不需要它,”他简单地说道)”可知,Alex认为在户外简单的食物就足够了,不需要复杂的调味或更多的食物。故选D。
25.词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“after a day of burning off calories walking or climbing or backcountry skiing in the mountains(在进行了一整天的步行、登山或在山区进行越野滑雪等消耗卡路里的运动之后)”可知,在户外活动一天后,人们消耗了大量卡路里,感到非常饿的状态。
根据最后一段“When you’re camping, life is reduced to its essentials, and I’m reminded of how privileged most of us are to be dry, warm and fed. More importantly, I’m reminded that, sadly, not everyone is as fortunate as we are. And I’m reminded that, as a society, we should do better for them.(当你在露营时,生活就变得极其简单纯粹了。这让我想起我们大多数人是多么幸运能够保持干爽、温暖并且有食物可吃。更重要的是,这让我意识到,令人遗憾的是,并非所有人都像我们这般幸运。而且我还意识到,作为一个社会,我们应该为他们做得更好)”可知,作者感到难过的是,有些人缺乏基本的生活必需品。故选A。
根据最后一段“When you’re camping, life is reduced to its essentials, and I’m reminded of how privileged most of us are to be dry, warm and fed. More importantly, I’m reminded that, sadly, not everyone is as fortunate as we are. And I’m reminded that, as a society, we should do better for them.(当你在露营时,生活就变得极其简单纯粹了。这让我想起我们大多数人是多么幸运能够保持干爽、温暖并且有食物可吃。更重要的是,这让我意识到,令人遗憾的是,并非所有人都像我们这般幸运。而且我还意识到,作为一个社会,我们应该为他们做得更好)”可知,选项C“露营是一种提醒人们所拥有的美好生活的方式”是作者想通过文字传递的信息。故选C。

【答案】28.A 29.C 30.A 31.D
根据首段中的“Parents have good reasons to lay emphasis on their children’s musical education since learning an instrument is not only associated with cognitive performance but also intelligence scores in children.(父母有充分的理由重视孩子的音乐教育,因为学习乐器不仅与孩子的认知表现有关,而且与孩子的智力得分有关)”可知,父母强调孩子的音乐教育是因为它促进孩子大脑认知和智力发展。 故选A项。
结合第二段中的“The results showed that musical people had better memory and executive function—the ability to stay focused on tasks, make a plan, and have self-control—than those with less or no musicality.(研究结果表明,与那些音乐性较差或没有音乐性的人相比,音乐人有更好的记忆力和执行功能,即专注于任务、制定计划以及自我控制的能力)”和第三段“A good memory is important for playing a musical instrument, such as playing music from memory, and this seems to translate to people’s cognitive performance. Similarly, executive function is required when playing an instrument, and it translates to improved cognitive performance too.(良好的记忆力对于演奏乐器很重要,比如根据记忆演奏音乐,这似乎转化为人们的认知表现。同样,演奏乐器时也需要执行功能,这也会提高认知能力)”可知,演奏乐器需要好的执行功能,它包括保持对任务的专注、制定计划和自控能力,即演奏乐器是通过提高注意力来提高认知表现。故选C项。
30.细节理解题。根据末段“What makes a difference, however, is whether people still play an instrument or only played in the past. Those who still play an instrument show higher cognitive performance. This makes sense as continued engagement in cognitively stimulating activities would result in continued brain health benefits while having played the guitar for three years at primary school might not have such a big impact on the cognitive performance later in life.(然而,关键在于人们是否仍在演奏乐器,还是仅仅过去演奏过而已。那些仍在演奏乐器的人展现出更高的认知表现。这是有道理的,因为持续参与刺激认知的活动会带来持续的大脑健康益处,而一个人在小学阶段弹了三年吉他,可能对日后的认知能力不会有太大的影响) ”可推断,持续练习演奏乐器会影响认知表现。故选A项。
根据首段中的“A new study has shown that playing an instrument or singing in a choir may promote your brain.(一项新的研究表明,在合唱团演奏乐器或唱歌可以促进你的大脑发育)”以及全文可知,演奏乐器或参与合唱可能促进大脑发展,尤其在记忆力和执行功能方面,对中老年人的认知能力有积极影响。

【答案】32.C 33.B 34.C 35.A
根据第一段中“But we may be overcorrecting, forgetting that “cheap and healthy” food exists, too. (但我们可能矫枉过正,忘记了“便宜又健康”的食品也存在)”和第二段中“In fact, the researcher found that a high-price tag (标签) will even convince consumers that a certain food is healthful. (事实上,研究者发现高价标签甚至会让消费者认为某种食品更健康)”可知,作者认为食品价格与其健康程度并无必然联系,言外之意是食物价格并不能反映其健康程度。故选C项。
33.细节理解题。根据第三段中“According to Reczek, the purpose of the study was to examine the popular belief, also known as a lay (非专业的) theory, that eating healthy food means spending more money.(据雷泽克说,这项研究的目的是检验一种普遍的观点,即所谓的非专业理论,认为吃健康食品意味着要花更多的钱)”可知,雷泽克进行这项研究是为了检验一种非专业理论。故选B项。
根据最后一段中“We don’t have to be misled,” she said. “We can compare nutrition labels and we can do research before we go to the grocery store. We can use facts rather than our intuition (直觉).(“我们不必被误导,”她说,“我们可以比较营养标签,我们可以在去杂货店之前做些研究。我们可以依据事实而不是直觉。”)”可知,雷泽克建议我们购物时要依据事实而不是直觉,要理性、明智,即聪明地购物。故选C项。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第二段中“According to a recent study, many people believe that healthy food must be more expensive than unhealthy food, and that healthy food just needs to be expensive. In fact, the researcher found that a high price tag (标签) will even convince consumers that a certain food is healthful.(根据最近的一项研究,很多人认为健康食品一定比不健康食品更贵,而且健康食品就应该贵。事实上,研究人员发现,高价标签甚至会让消费者相信某种食物是健康的)”可知,本文主要论述了人们错误地认为价格更高的食物更健康这一现象。故A项“People falsely believe pricier food is healthier(人们错误地认为越贵的食物越健康)”能概括文章内容,最适合做文章标题。故选A项。

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
A few weeks later, as I was doing the dishes, the phone rang. I dried my hands quickly and picked it up. The voice on the other end was cheerful. “Congratulations, Janette! You’ve won the Magazine Millionaire contest! You’ve been selected as our monthly winner, and you’ve bagged a fantastic $25,000!” My heart skipped a beat. I couldn’t believe my ears. The words seemed to resound in my mind, bringing a sense of disbelief and joy. For a moment, I was speechless. The caller repeated the news, and I finally managed to respond with a happy voice, “Thank you! Thank you so much!”
I hung up and ran to my husband, “John! We won! We won $25,000!” John’s eyes widened in surprise and delight. We hugged each other tightly, tears of joy streaming down our faces. The weight of financial stress seemed to lift off our shoulders at that instant. We knew that this win would make a huge difference to our lives, giving us the breathing space we desperately needed. We could pay off John’s medical debts and even had some money left over to treat ourselves.
