How to make a good first impression at high school?
High school’s starting soon, and I want to make a good first impression. I’m a little afraid because I’m short and weigh a bit too much and sometimes people make fun of me for that. Can anyone give me any advice on how to act during my first weeks, or what kind of clothes to wear, etc.?

I really suggest being kind and outgoing. It is better to be really social and introduce yourself. You won’t get any where being shy.
Your weight really doesn’t matter. If you’re really that uncomfortable with it, try working out.

Don’t worry about your weight, and don’t let it get you down. “Those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”
Remember that. Concentrate on schoolwork. Be nice, polite, and stay strong. Don’t wear the ‘in’ clothes just because everybody else does. Wear clothes for YOU. Try babydoll tops and flats; they’re very nice and work for almost all body types (类型).

Freshman (九年级学生) year, just ended for me a few months ago!
Take it from me, the best thing for you to do is be nice to everyone. If someone isn’t nice to you, don’t take it personally. Try out for sports and clubs, and you’ll soon make new friends.

By day, Robert Titterton is a lawyer. In his spare time though he goes on stage beside pianist Maria Raspopova — not as a musician but as her page turner. “I’m not a trained musician, but I’ve learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance.”
Mr Titterton is chairman of the Omega Ensemble but has been the group’s official page turner for the past four years. His job is to sit beside the pianist and turn the pages of the score so the musician doesn’t have to break the flow of sound by doing it themselves. He said he became just as nervous as those playing instruments on stage.
“A lot of skills are needed for the job. You have to make sure you don’t turn two pages at once and make sure you find the repeats in the music when you have to go back to the right spot.” Mr Titterton explained.
Being a page turner requires plenty of practice. Some pieces of music can go for 40 minutes and require up to 50 page turns, including back turns for repeat passages. Silent onstage communication is key, and each pianist has their own style of “nodding” to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner.
But like all performances, there are moments when things go wrong. “I was turning the page to get ready for the next page, but the draft wind from the turn caused the spare pages to fall off the stand,” Mr Titterton said, “Luckily I was able to catch them and put them back.”
Most page turners are piano students or up-and-coming concert pianists, although Ms Raspopova has once asked her husband to help her out on stage.
“My husband is the worst page turner,” she laughed. “He’s interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say: ‘Turn, turn!’ Robert is the best page turner I’ve had in my entire life.”
4. What should Titterton be able to do to be a page turner?
A. Read music. B. Play the piano.
C. Sing songs. D. Fix the instruments.
5. Which of the following best describes Titterton’s job on stage?
A. Boring. B. Well-paid.
C. Demanding. D. Dangerous.
6. What does Titterton need to practise?
A. Counting the pages. B. Recognizing the “nodding”.
C. Catching falling objects. D. Performing in his own style.
7. Why is Ms Raspopova’s husband “the worst page turner”?
A. He has very poor eyesight. B. He ignores the audience.
C. He has no interest in music. D. He forgets to do his job.
A 5. C 6. B 7. D
根据第一段“I’m not a trained musician, but I’ve learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance.(我不是受过训练的音乐家,但我学会了识谱,这样我就可以在Maria的表演中帮助她)”可知,因为Titterton识谱,所以可以在Maria的钢琴表演中为她翻页。故选A项。
根据第三段“A lot of skills are needed for the job. You have to make sure you don’t turn two pages at once and make sure you find the repeats in the music when you have to go back to the right spot.(这项工作需要很多技能。你必须确保你不会一次翻两页并且必要的时候确保你回到前面找到音乐重复的部分)”可知,为钢琴家翻页这项工作很需要技巧,所以Titterton的工作要求是很高的。故选C项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Silent onstage communication is key, and each pianist has their own style of “nodding” to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner.(无声的舞台交流是关键,每个钢琴家都有自己的“点头”风格来表示翻页,他们需要和翻页者进行练习)”可知,Titterton需要练习识别钢琴演奏者的“点头”示意来翻页。
根据最后一段“He’s interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say: ‘Turn, turn!’(他对音乐很感兴趣,感受着每一个音符,所以我不得不说:“翻页,翻页!”)”
C
Children whose minds wander (走神) might have sharper brains, a research suggests. A study has found that people who let their minds wander easily have more “working memory”, giving them the ability to hold a lot of information in their heads and control it cleverly.
Children at school need this type of memory on a daily basis for different kinds of tasks, such as following teachers’ instructions or remembering dictated sentences. During the study, volunteers were asked to perform one simple task during which researchers kept asking if their minds were wandering. In the end, volunteers tested their ability to remember a series of letters mixed with simple maths questions.
Daniel Levinson, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the United States, said that those with higher working memory capacity (储存容量) reported “more mind wandering during these simple tasks”, but their performance did not deteriorate.
The results, published online in the journal Psychological Science, seem to make sure that the former research found working memory allows humans to deal with many thoughts at the same time. Another researcher said, “This study seems to suggest that when the tasks aren’t very difficult, people with additional working memory capacity use them effectively to think about other things besides what they’re doing.”
Working memory capacity is also connected with general measures (标准) of intelligence, such as reading comprehension and IQ scores. The results suggest the sorts of planning that people do quite often in daily life — when they are on the bus, when they are cycling to work, when they are in the shower — are probably supported by working memory.
8. What did the researchers ask the volunteers to do during the study?
A. Question each other. B. Put on a performance.
C. Remember mixed numbers. D. Carry out one easy task.
9. What does the underlined word “deteriorate” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Become worse. B. Go well.
C. Start quickly. D. Lose control.
10. What can be known about working memory?
A. It stops useless thoughts. B. It changes with time going on.
C. It helps with more tasks at one time. D. It causes worse performance during work.
11. What’s the text mainly about?
A. How the working memory works. B. Working memory can be improved.
C. Wandering minds are not something bad. D. Why people’s minds wander while working.
D 9. A 10. C 11. C
根据第二段“During the study, volunteers were asked to perform one simple task during which researchers kept asking if their minds were wandering.(在研究过程中,志愿者被要求执行一项简单的任务,在此过程中,研究人员不断询问他们是否在走神。)”
划线词所在句“those with higher working memory capacity (储存容量) reported “more mind wandering during these simple tasks”, but their performance did not deteriorate(那些工作记忆能力较强的人报告“在完成这些简单任务时更容易走神”,但他们的表现并没有deteriorate)”讲“工作记忆能力较强的人更容易走神”,结合句中“but their performance...” 故选A。
根据倒数第二段“The results, published online in the journal Psychological Science, seem to make sure that the former research found working memory allows humans to deal with many thoughts at the same time.(该研究结果在线发表在《心理科学》杂志上,似乎证实了之前的研究发现工作记忆可以让人类同时处理许多想法)”和“This study seems to suggest that when the tasks aren’t very difficult, people with additional working memory capacity use them effectively to think about other things besides what they’re doing.(这项研究似乎表明,当任务不是很困难时,拥有额外工作记忆容量的人会有效地利用它们来思考他们正在做的事情之外的其他事情。)”
通读全文,并结合第一段“Children whose minds wander (走神) might have sharper brains, a research suggests.(一项研究表明,走神的孩子大脑可能更敏锐。)” 。故选C。
D
In much of Africa, whenever kids are in the forest, they are careful about the sound of laughter. A giggling (咯咯笑) sound might be the first sign of a dangerous animal called the spotted hyena (鬣狗). In Zimbabwe, 12-year-old Tapiwa told me about two brothers who once spent a night in a tree with hyenas waiting below. Hyenas had attacked their family’s cows. The boys knew that the hyenas would run away from moving or flashing (闪烁的) lights. They used a flashlight to force the animals to run away. They followed the hyenas into the forest. Then their flashlight died. The hyenas turned and ran after the brothers at once. The boys escaped by climbing a tree.
Many people think hyenas live mainly by eating dead animals. But these animals are also supersmart hunters. When wild animals are hard to find, hyenas attack the villages at midnight. Many villagers have lost cows or goats to spotted hyenas. Some people have lost their lives.
“Hyenas make nighttime a frightening time for us,” said Tapiwa’s father, Amon Chengeta. When night falls, villagers protect their livestock (家畜) in kraals (牲畜栏). But hyenas destroy kraals to reach livestock. Mr. Chengeta was awakened by the sound of laughter coming from his kraal. Mr. Chengeta, Tapiwa, and two neighbors rushed to the kraal. They saw three hyenas running away from the broken kraal. One of the livestock did not survive. Villagers then spent more time guarding their livestock. Like Mr. Chengeta, Innocent Salimu has heard the midnight laughing sounds of hyenas. He was planning to increase the size of his goat herd, but he has put that idea on hold.
Both Mr. Chengeta and Mr. Salimu agree that humans are responsible for fights with hyenas. “We used to have healthy forests with many different animals, and hyenas hardly caused trouble for us,” said Mr. Chengeta. “The hyena attacks are perhaps nature’s way of telling us to change the way we use our environment.”
12. What does the sound of laughter mean in African forests?
A. A call for help. B. A big loss of wild animals.
C. A sign of happiness. D. A possibility of animals’ attacking.
13. Why did the boys spend their night in a tree?
A. To wait for hyenas. B. To protect themselves from hyenas.
C. To look for fun. D. To keep an eye on their livestock.
14. What can we infer about the hyenas from paragraph 3?
A. They can be stopped by a kraal.
B. They are not afraid of humans any more.
C. They have become a big problem for villagers.
D. They force villagers to find new places to live in.
15. What does Mr. Chengeta think of the hyena attacks?
A. They make people consider environmental protection.
B. They cause some animals to disappear from Africa.
C. They should be dealt with by killing the hyenas.
D. They should be stopped in a stricter way.
D 13. B 14. C 15. A

provide sb. with sth.
故填is broken。

it is wise of sb. to do是固定句型,意为“某人做某事是明智的”,其中it是形式主语,真正的主语是不定式,因此空格处是不定式to forget。故填to forget。

A couple, Peter and Alice, had a nice home and two lovely children, a boy and a girl. Peter had a good job and had just been asked to go on a business trip to another city and would be gone for several days. It was decided that Alice needed an outing and would go along too. So they hired a reliable woman called Mary to care for their children and made the trip.
Days later, they returned home a little earlier than they had planned.
As they drove into their town feeling glad to be back, they noticed smoke, so they went off their usual route to see what it was. They found a house in flames. Alice said. “Oh, well, it isn’t our fire. Let’s go home.”
But Peter drove closer and screamed in surprise. “That house belongs to Fred Jones who works in the same company with me. He wouldn’t be off work yet, maybe there is something we can do.”
“It has nothing to do with us,” protested (抗议) Alice. “You have your good clothes on. Let’s not get any closer.”
But Peter drove up and stopped. They were both shocked to see the whole house in flames. A woman on the lawn was in hysterics screaming, “The children! Get the children!”
Peter seized her by the shoulder, saying, “Get a hold of yourself and tell us where the children are!”
“In the basement,” sobbed the woman, “down the hall and to the left.”
In spite of Alice’s protests, Peter turned on a tap, used the water to wet his clothes, put his wet handkerchief on his head and dashed into the basement which was full of smoke.
He got to the door and found two children. Holding one under each arm. Peter headed outside. As he left, he could hear some more whimpering (呜咽声). He delivered the two badly frightened children into his arms and started back asking how many more children were down there.

Paragraph 2:
At that moment, Peter seemed to feel something familiar in his arms.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
The woman told him there were two more. Knowing that Peter was ready to dash into the basement again, Alice screamed, “Peter! Don't go back! It's dangerous!” However, Peter went back to the basement by feeling his way down the smoke and into the room. It was after what seemed like a century that he finally found both children and started back.
Paragraph 2:
At that moment, Peter seemed to feel something familiar in his arms. As he climbed up the endless steps, the feeling became much stronger. Considering they would be trapped in the fire, Peter made all his efforts to get out. Fortunately, Peter was finally safe with the two children. To his great surprise, the children he had just rescued were his own kids. Realizing what had happened, Alice ran to them in tears and the whole family hugged together. It turned out later that Mary asked the woman to look after the two kids while she was shopping.

Peter seized her by the shoulder saying, “Get a hold of yourself and tell us where the children are!”
