Soon computers and other machines will be able to remember you by looking at your eyes! The programme works because everyone’s eyes are different. So in the future you won’t have to remember a number when you want to use a machine or take money out of a bank. You’ll just have to look at the machine and it will be able to tell who you are.
The eye-recognition (识别) programme is already being tested in shops and banks in the USA, Britain, Spain, Italy and Turkey. Soon, this technology will take the place of all other ways of finding out who people are.
However, scientists are working on other systems. Machines will soon be able to know you from the shape of your face or hand or even your smell! We already have machines that can tell who you are from your voice or the mark made by your finger.
Eye-recognition is better than other kinds because your eyes don’t change as you get older, or get dirty like hands or fingers. And even twins have different eyes, so the programme can be up to 94% correct, depending on how good the technology is. Some programmes may only be right 51% of the time. In Britain, it was found that 91% of people who had tried it said that they liked the idea of eye-recognition. In the future your computer will be looking at you in the eye. So smile!
29.How does the eye-recognition programme work?
A.You write your number.
B.You show your ID card.
C.You look at the machine.
D.You say your name.
30.Why can the programme be up to 94% correct?
A.Because eyes never change.
B.Because hands or fingers can get dirty.
C.Because people like the idea of the programme.
D.Because the programme is widely used around the world.
31.Which of the following is true?
A.The programme is being tested in Japan.
B.Machines with other systems can also tell who you are.
C.91%of people like the idea of the programme.
D.Computers can remember you by looking at your clothes.
32.What does this passage mainly talk about?
A.Introduction to some kinds of programmes.
B.Introduction to the eye-recognition programme.
C.The way how the eye-recognition programme works.
D.The places where the eye-recognition programme is tested.

On Sept. 7, famous Chinese archaeologist (考古学家) Fan Jinshi, 85, was awarded by UNESCO for her contribution (贡献) to the protection of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang.
Called the “daughter of Dunhuang”, her story with the caves started 60 years ago. In 1963, Fan, then a 25-year-old Peking University graduate, had the chance to work at the Mogao Caves, a place she had wanted to explore for a long time.
“Seeing Dunhuang for the first time was breathtaking. But only when truly staying here did I realize that inside the caves is a world of divine beauty while outside is a land of blowing sand and yellow earth,” Fan told Gansu Daily.
Back in those days, the Mogao Caves were almost completely cut off from the world. Fan and her coworkers had to live in mud houses and drink salty water. They stayed inside the Caves to copy murals (壁画) and do whatever they could to protect and restore them.
In 2011 after 40 years of hard work, a report on 10 Mogao Caves by Fan’s team was finally published. It was known as China's first professional report on cave archaeology.
As time passed. Fan found a serious problem. The increasing number of tourists visiting Dunhuang might harm the caves, causing the murals inside to fade. Something needed to be done to preserve Dunhuang’s heritage.
In the late 1980s, Fan stumbled upon computer technology by chance. She realized that this might preserve the Mogao Caves forever. After over 30 years of exploration, the Dunhuang Academy built a digital database to protect cultural relics (文物) there, allowing Dunhuang’s art to live forever and to step out of the caves to meet the world.
“In my whole life, I’ve only done one thing: protect and promote the world cultural heritage of the Mogao Caves,” she told People’s Daily. “My heart belongs to Dunhuang.”
33.What can we learn about Fan from the passage?
A.She is a woman of great determination (决心).
B.Her health was affected by her hard work.
C.She began her work at the Mogao Caves at 83.
D.She studied archaeology at Nanjing University.
34.What was Fan’s first impression (印象) of Dunhuang?
A.It was an amazing place. B.The environment was terrible.
C.It was in great need of protection. D.The working conditions were better than expected.
35.What pushed Fan to set up a digital database for the Mogao Caves?
A.Her interest in computer technology. B.Her dream of spreading Chinese culture.
C.The increasing risk of harm to the caves. D.The need to publish the professional report.
36.What does Fan think of her work in Dunhuang?
A.It has won her great respect. B.It has been her lifelong career.
C.It has influenced many young people. D.It has helped with cultural exchange.
【答案】33.A 34.A 35.C 36.B
【导语】本文主要介绍了考古学家樊锦诗为保护敦煌莫高窟所做的贡献。
33.推理判断题。根据第四段中“Back in those days, the Mogao Caves were almost completely cut off from the world. Fan and her coworkers had to live in mud houses and drink salty water.”可知,那时候,莫高窟几乎与外界完全隔绝。樊和她的同事不得不住在泥房子里,喝咸水。可推知,在如此艰难的环境工作,樊锦诗是一个意志坚定的女人。故选A。

36.细节理解题。根据最后一段“‘In my whole life, I’ve only done one thing: protect and promote the world cultural heritage of the Mogao Caves,’ she told People’s Daily. ‘My heart belongs to Dunhuang.’”可知,“在我的一生中,我只做了一件事:保护和促进莫高窟的世界文化遗产,”他告诉《人民日报》。“我的心属于敦煌。”由此可知,樊锦诗觉得她在敦煌的工作是她毕生的事业。故选B。

Watson had been watching his friend closely since sitting down to breakfast. Holmes happened to look up and meet his eyes. “Watson, what are you thinking about?” he asked.
“You.”
“Me?”
“Yes, Holmes. I was just thinking about how easily you picked up all these tricks of yours.”
“No doubt,” Holmes answered with a smile. “Would you care to give me an example of my method of reasoning?”
“With pleasure,” said Watson. “I can tell that you were quite absent-minded this morning.”
“Excellent!” said Holmes. “How could you possibly know that?”
“Because you’re usually a neat man, but today, you’ve forgotten to shave (刮脸).”
“Dear me!” said Holmes. “I had no idea. Watson, that you were so clever. Has your eagle eye detected anything else?”
“Yes, Holmes. You have a client named Barlow, and you’ve been unsuccessful with his case.”
“Dear me, how could you know that?”
“I saw the name on the outside of his envelope. When you opened it, you groaned (叹息) and put it in your pocket with a frown (皱眉).
“You are indeed good at noticing things around you. Any other points?”
“Yes, Holmes, you’ve put on your black coat, instead of your usual dressing gown. You must be expecting an important visitor.”
“Anything else?”
“I could find other points, Holmes, but I’m only giving you these few, in order to show you that there are other people in the world who can be as clever as you.”
“And some not so clever,” said Holmes. “I admit they are few, but I’m afraid, my dear Watson, that I miscount you among them.”
“What do you mean, Holmes? You mean I was mistaken?”
“Just a little that way, I fear. Let’s go over your reasoning: I didn’t shave because I’d sent my razor out to be repaired. I put on my coat because I have an early appointment with my dentist. His name is Barlow, and the letter was to confirm the time. But go on, Watson! It’s a simple trick, and no doubt you’ll soon master it.”
37.What can you know about Holmes according to the conversation?
A.He is good at reasoning. B.He often plays tricks on others.
C.He often looks untidy. D.He is always absent-minded.
38.Why is Watson giving Holmes some examples?

39.What does the underlined word “them” in the conversation refer to?
A.People who know Holmes well. B.People who are really successful.
C.People who look like Holmes. D.People who are not so clever.
40.How might Watson feel at the end of the conversation?
A.Unhappy. B.Proud. C.Nervous. D.Excited.

Have you ever wondered how blind people read? Thanks to a system invented by Louis Braille, blind people can learn to use their fingers to read.
In 1809, Braille was born in a small town in France. 41 Later, his other eye was infected, resulting in complete blindness. His blindness inspired him to become an inventor who made contributions to all blind people.
When Braille was ten years old, his parents sent him to a special school for blind students. Braille learned how to read at this school. He was first taught to read by feeling raised letters on paper. 42 Too many letters felt the same, for they had similar shapes.
Then, in 1821, Braille heard about a night-reading code system. It was a 12-dot (12凸点)system that was created for night-time communication between soldiers. However, this system didn’t allow the fingertip to cover a whole letter. The readers had to move their fingers to feel the letters. 43
Three years later, Braille developed a shorter and simpler touch system based on the night-reading code system. He used six raised dots with different combinations (组合) to stand for each letter. 44 Blind people could read much faster and more easily.
Braille died in 1852, but his touch system lives on. 45
A.It allowed a blind person to feel a whole letter without moving his or her finger.
B.Now people call this touch system Braille in honor of Louis Braille.
C.Braille thought that the night-reading code system could be improved for blind people.
D.However, this was slow and difficult.
E.Braille thought that the 12-dot system was a perfect choice for the blind.
F.When he was three, he accidentally hurt one of his eyes when he was playing.
【答案】41.F 42.D 43.C 44.A 45.B

41.根据“Later, his other eye was infected, resulting in complete blindness.”可知,他的另一只眼睛被感染,导致完全失明。前句应该说他的一只眼睛如何失明的。选项F“当他三岁时,他在玩的时候不小心伤了一只眼睛”符合语境。故选F。
42.根据“Too many letters felt the same, for they had similar shapes.”可知,太多的字母感觉一样,因为它们的形状相似。布莱叶第一次在纸上学习凸起的字母,这里应该填入困难的经历。选项D“然而,这很慢并且很难”符合语境。故选D。
43.根据“Three years later, Braille developed a shorter and simpler touch system based on the night-reading code system.”
44.根据“He used six raised dots with different combinations (组合) to stand for each letter.”以及“Blind people could read much faster and more easily.”可知,他用六个不同组合的凸起点来代表每个字母。盲人可以更快、更容易地阅读。这里应该介绍这个系统的原理。选项A“它允许盲人在不移动手指的情况下感觉到整个单词”符合语境。故选A。
45.根据“Braille died in 1852, but his touch system lives on”可知,布莱叶于1852年去世,但他的触摸系统仍然存在。选项B“现在人们称这种触摸系统为布莱叶,以纪念路易斯·布莱叶”。故选B。

On April 26, 2022, Italian traveller Vienna Cammarota set off from Venice. Then the 72-year-old woman planned to go to China on foot. This meant she would travel about 22,000 kilometers and walk through 15 countries. The journey would be full of challenges, but she wasn’t afraid.
The traveller carried only a backpack. “I also have a lot of passion with me,” she said. On August 29, 2024, she finally set foot on Chinese soil.

By sharing her experiences, she now hopes her travels will help people in the West see the true beauty of China.
Cammarota’s interest in China began more than 20 years ago. A Chinese student stayed in her home and told her a lot about the country’s rich culture heritage.
Cammarota plans to spend two years in China. She will visit key stops along the ancient SilkRoad, including Kashgar, Dunhuang and the historic city of Xi’an. She is also looking forward to visiting Suzhou. The city was described as the “Venice of the East” by Marco Polo.

Cammarota plans to spend two years in China. She will visit key stops along the ancient SilkRoad, including Kashgar, Dunhuang and the historic city of Xi’an. She is also looking forward to visiting Suzhou. The city was described as the “Venice of the East” by Marco Polo.
