While attractions like the Shard and the London Eye offer excellent perspectives, they're
always busy and ticket prices are steep. But with a little insider knowledge, you can save your
pounds and bag your skyline photos without the crowds through accessing the following
viewpoints.
Parliament Hill
London is mostly flat, but if you know where to look there are a few hills that provide natural
(and free)high points offering city views with a side order of fresh air.
One of the most central is Parliament Hill on Hampstead Heath-at 98m,one of London's
highest natural viewpoints. From here,on a clear day,you can sit on the park bench that featured
in movies like Run Fatboy Run and Notes on a Scandal.
Entry fee:Free.
The Garden Museum Tower
If you exit left out of Westminster station, battle your way over the bridge and then turn
right, past the view of Big Ben and walk along the south side of the Thames, you'll come to a
medieval(中世纪的)church.
While you might be interested in British garden design,it's the 14th-Century tower that's the
main attraction for photographers.Climb the 131 steps of the narrow spiral staircase and you'll
emerge onto one of the finest riverside viewpoints in the city-with views across to the Palace of
Westminster on the right.
Entry fee:Adult£16,or Tower only4.
The IFS Cloud Cable Car
If you want to soar over London in a glass pod,the obvious place to go is the London Eye.
But a cheaper and crowd-free alternative is to ride the IFS Cloud Cable Car.
The views are impressive at any time, but the Cable Car stays open late,so you can even
enjoy magnificent sunsets from the west-facing side or admire the twinkling city lights after
dark.
Entry fee:f 6 one-way
Seabird,Southwark
London has no shortage of rooftop venues()offering knockout cityscape views,so it
can be hard to pick just one or two.But for location, angles and a great experience,it doesn't get
much better than Seabird,on the 14th floor of the Hoxton hotel in Southwark with nothing to
block views on three sides.
Entry fee:Buy a drink:draught beer costs f 6.50 or small glass of wine is f 9;a portion of
olives costs£5.

Technology has undoubtedly opened up the world for me.Literally,in the case of my fully
accessible home.My windows are automatic, and my front door is automatic too. There are also
my wheelchairs.I guess that any wheelchair user will say the best invention is that of the wheel.
It's a tool bringing independence and comfort.
Last week,I took a well-deserved break from work and went on a staycation in my local
area.On the first day,I was heading further out in my power wheelchair than I've ever been on
my own. This chair is almost like a transformer.I like the speed, the phone charger and the
flexible feature.It's a wonderful creation.
However, while there are many benefits that come with technology,I still live in a disabling
world. For example, out in my power wheelchair that day, feeling free and easy,I headed straight
to the shop not far away.I deserve to feel heard and included when innovation is concerned. But
when I got there,I was confronted by self-service checkouts. While they are designed for easy and
quick service, for me and many other disabled people, the lack of face-to-face services can put us
at a disadvantage. Not only are the checkouts far too high, they are awkwardly designed so that
you cannot approach them with a wheelchair. So,I waited for someone to assist me.In just a
matter of a few hours,I had seen how technology and accessibility advancements have empowered
me then,in the next breath, disabled me.
I still live in a disabling world with sub-standard accessibility. Therefore, disabled people by
and large are more likely to rely on mechanical and technological devices such as lifts and
communication aids.Unfortunately, these things are sometimes abused and mistreated, making the
person relying on them dependent on others.
4.How does the author think of technology according to paragraphs 1 and 2?
A.He casts some doubts on it.
B.He shows much gratitude for it.
C.He expresses curiosity about it.
D.He feels really carefree with it.
5.What happened to the author in the shop?
A.He came across many other disabled people by chance.
B.He waited quite a few hours in order to check out.
C.He was unable to seek assistance from others.
D.He couldn't use the self-service checkout by himself.

6.Why does the author say he still lives in a disabling world?
A.He thinks it is not easy to make his voice heard.
B.Some shops are inaccessible to wheelchair users.
C.He finds it really hard to fit in with non-disabled people.
D.Things related to technology are sometimes out of service.
7.What would be the best title for the text?
A.My different views concerning disability B.How I make full advantage of technology

Every week,Angela looked at her recycling bin, filled with shampoo bottles and plastic
containers, with mixed feelings.Sure,it was a lot of plastic, but it was going to be recycled.Or
so she thought. Then, her husband sent her some articles revealing that less than 6%of the
country's plastic gets recycled. She was shocked.
Determined to cut back on her plastic consumption,Angela got a starter kit from a company
selling refillable household cleaners(家用清洁器).In it were tablets, containing concentrated
hand soap as well as glass and bathroom cleaners, and four empty containers. She filled each one
with tap water, then dropped in a tablet and watched it dissolve. If she was happy with the
cleaners, she would order more tablets but reuse the containers. No new plastic required.
Given plastic's harmful effects on the environment, nearly three quarters of Americans say
they are trying to reduce their reliance on single-use plastic, according to Pew Research Center.
Since plastic is everywhere and avoiding it altogether is extraordinarily difficult, some, like
Angela,have revived a once-customary practice:refilling containers.Household cleaners seem
particularly prepared for a refill revolution, for many can be easily concentrated and reconstituted
with water. If just 10%to 20%of plastic packaging are reused,a report from the World
Economic Forum estimates, the amount of plastic waste entering the ocean will be cut in half.
Not everyone is as enthusiastic, though.Jan Dell,a chemical engineer, noted that many
cleaning products are packaged in PET or HDPE,two types of plastic with relatively high
recycling rates. So she is less concerned about them but far more concerned about the packaging
of other products."What companies should be focusing on is everything else that isn't recyclable,
that is single use and that often becomes plastic pollution,"she said, pointing to plastic bags and
cups."This is just a classic example of big corporations doing something to attract people's
attention over here on something that's not the main issue to distract from all the single-use plastic
they're pushing out..”
8.Why is Angela mentioned?
A.To promote a tablet.
B.To lead in the topic.
C.To clarify a concept.
D.To recommend a kit.
9.What does the underlined word "dissolve"in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Float over water.
B.Turn over in water.
C.Change color in water.
D.Mix with water.

Robots doing housework is nothing new with the latest achievements in robotics.Recently,a
robot called Mobile ALOHA caught the attention of many at the beginning of 2024,with short
videos of it cooking at someone's home becoming popular in January.
Developed by a team of researchers at Stanford University in the US,the robot can handle
everything for a dish, whether it is cutting vegetables or cracking eggs.It also does well in various
household tasks like watering plants, petting cats, cleaning the floor and doing the washing. It
even knows to shake the pillow()after putting on a pillowcase. An Internet user joked under
one video that as long as this thing doesn't try to kill him while he is asleep,he is in real need of
it.
However,a following video posted by one of the researchers,Tony Zhao, and showing
Mobile ALOHA's failures proved that the idea of having a robot servant may just be wishful
thinking. In the video,Mobile ALOHA randomly broke glasses and plates, crashed into cupboards
and even burned a pot.
It turns out that Mobile ALOHA is not a complete self-learning system that can independently
deal with new environments. It relies on demonstrations by human operators in its surroundings,
meaning that the robot needs to learn from human behaviour before completing each task. Also,
according to the team, the robot achieves a 95%success rate in removing red wine stains(),
80%in pushing chairs,and a mere 40%in frying shrimp.In short,it's far from perfect
The behavioral problems of AI robots have been bothering scientists for decades.Although AI
robots do pretty well in things requiring high-level reasoning like maths, they perform worse than
a one-year-old child when it comes to simple tasks demanding abilities of senses, reflexes(
and mobility,among others.
As the team observed, the interaction between the arm and the base of Mobile ALOHA would
get quite complex if more flexibility is required in a task.Even a slight deviation()in the
base settings might lead to significant drift in the arms'motions, resulting in failure to complete
the task.
12.What can be known about Mobile ALOHA according to paragraph 2?
A.It sells well among housewives.
B.It can help one to do housework.
C.It was developed by IT scientists.
D.It is badly needed by Internet users

13.Why is Tony Zhao's video about Mobile ALOHA mentioned?
A.To prove its online popularity.
B.To display its powerful functions.
C.To show it needs further improvement.
D.To suggest it should work under one's help.
14.How can Mobile ALOHA best complete a new task?
A.By operating independently
B.By copying humans'behaviour.
C.By learning from previous tasks.
D.By turning to programmers for help
15.Which type of task may AI robot be poor at?
A.Deep learning.
B.Precise calculation.
C.Logical thinking.
D.Behavioral flexibility.

The Value of Tears
Tears can ruin make-up,bring conversation to a stop, and give you a runny nose.Tears leave
you embarrassed and without energy.Still, crying is a fact of life, and your tears are very useful.
Even when you're not crying,they make a film over the eye's surface.16
When tears fall, they reduce stress. But we tend to fight them for all sorts of reasons."People
worry about showing their emotions, afraid that once they lose control they'll never get it back.
17 After we cry,the feelings that caused the tears often disappear.
Sometimes people become much stressed and can't cry.Whatever emotion they are feeling-
shock,anger,fear,or sadness-is being held back.
But everyone has the need to cry.Psychologist Vera Diamond explains that her treatment
often consists of giving people permission to cry.18 Patients practice crying just to become
used to expressing emotions. She suggests safe, private places to cry, like under the bedcovers or
in the car.Crying is a way of reducing tension, but people don't like it when others cry because it
makes them tense.19 And they'll do just about anything to make you stop.
In certain situations, such as at work, tears are not appropriate. It's good not to cry during a
tense business discussion.20 You should also act out the whole situation again and be as
noisy and angry as you like.It will help you feel better."And,"she adds,"Once your tears have
taken away the stress, you can begin to think calmly of ways to deal with the problem.
Tears are a sign of our ability to feel.If you find yourself near someone crying, deal with it.
And never be afraid to cry yourself.
A.They too may be holding back a need to cry.
B.They cry for different reasons.
C.She gives crying exercises.
D.It contains a chemical against infection.
E.The fact is that no emotion lasts forever.
F.It forms in response to the stress on the surface of the eye.
G.But once you're safely behind closed doors, don't just cry

consider an early dinner. From the longing look in my neighbor's eyes it was obvious that he,too,
noticed the good smell.I wondered how long it had been since he had eaten anything, expecting
he would approach me for a handout().But he never did.My head and heart were battling it
out:the former telling me to mind my own business, and the latter urging me to make an
immediate trip to the food court for him.
While this inner debate was fierce,a well-dressed young couple suddenly approached.
"Excuse me,sir,"began the husband."We just finished eating and our appetite wasn't as big as
we thought. We hate to waste food. Can you help us out and put this to good use?"The kind
stranger handed a large container with food."Thank you, came the grateful reply.Feeling good

He lifted the soup, cupping his hands around the steaming bowl.It was obvious that he was
going to enjoy this miracle meal.He opened his mouth and suddenly,he stopped.
The reason for this unexpected behavior soon became clear.Entering the hall was a new

参考范文:
My neighbor was the only one taking action.Quickly
pulling aside his miracle meal,my neighbor leaped up and
guided the elderly man to share the seat.Numb with cold, the
old man didn't expected the invitation, moving clumsily.
Hardly had he seated himself when my neighbor tenderly
put his down jacket over the older man's shoulders, slipping
his arms into sleeves. Finally,he said "Can you help me
out?"pointing to the meal and placing the steaming cup of
soup in the stranger's hands.Seeing this,my head and heart
stopped battling and I had my decision.
Tears blurred my vision when I went to buy food at the
food court. What my neighbour said exactly spoke my mind.
With regret,I felt obliged to do the same.Respectfully and
cautiously,I approached them with steaming soup and a
sandwich.People around cast an approving smile in my
direction.“Can you help me out??”I asked.“Why not?”he
added jokingly,"But only if you go halfway with me on that
sandwich, which is too much for a man of my age."It wasn't
until that day that I truly learned the meaning of sharing.I
left the subway station feeling warmer than I had ever thought
possible.
