Five years ago,a couple found a baby owl,near-death,on their lawn. They consulted with
me because of my experience with owls and hawks.Eventually my wife and I undertook the task of
treating the owl.Alfie, waited out a developmental delay (most of her flight feathers came
especially late that first summer),and then taught her to fly and hunt.Alfie disappeared for a
week. Then she chose to return, centering her territory()on our backyard.I put a nest box on
my writing studio.
Alfie's first free-living year-mating,raising her first baby-coincided with the pandemic
that limited us to our yard.Friends said the birds were singing aloud and happily. From Alfie's
performance,I saw humans'unrest and worry when facing the unexpected disease. When Alfie
and her mate,Plus-One,played in the shade, the daily rhythms and quietness of the owls'world
contrasted with our life.
Many cultures view owls as messengers. However,Alfie is flesh and feathers;her heart
pumps blood red as ours. She has her comforts and fears. She is a very real little being overall.
Yet,throughout the isolation to prevent the spread of the disease,Alfie loosed herself, living
comfortably with her mate in the yard, which certainly inspired me and my family with hope. She
is,in reality,a messenger, one conveying the real meaning of life.
To be fully present in life and love,so natural for Alfie, remains a work in progress for me.
Alfie is the perfect little philosophical master. She enjoys a freedom unpolluted by criticism or
doubt, and a liberty as the air flows beneath her wings.Resisting nothing, she is pure presence,
here now.Perhaps I'd long labored toward the place where Alfie was effortlessly taking me,a
sense of openness, showing what's possible when we mess up our accustomed boundaries.
Alfie remains our magical light of the nighttime backyard.By day she usually stays in a
couple of favorite shaded spots. The choice is always hers.Free within limits;that's the universe
forher.It can inspire a life's work.
4.What can we learn about Alfie from the first two paragraphs?
A.She had a quick recovery.
B.She was first found by the author.
C.She set up a family in the backyard.
D.She was badly affected by the disease.
5.How does Alfie inspire the author and his family with hope?
A.She lives a relaxed life.
B.She has no fears at all.
C.She has red blood as humans.
D.She is viewed as a messenger.

D.Alfie is not affected by external judgment or uncertainty

In the animal world, speed is king.Fast animals have a leg up in outrunning other animals,
which puts them high on the food chain. It would seem that all animals would go for speed, but
then there's the sloth().While a lion can go from 0 to 60 miles an hour in only five seconds,
it takes a sloth all day to cover no more than 50 metres.
Sloths live entirely in trees on a diet of leaves. And for this, they are extremely rare. While
most of the land world is covered in trees, there are very few vertebrates(脊椎动物)that call the
tree home. The aim of a 2016 study, says Jonathan Pauli, professor of forest and wildlife ecology
at the University of Wisconsin-Madison,was to help uncover why sloths are indeed so unique.
"Among vertebrates, this is the rarest of lifestyles,"says Pauli."When you picture animals that
live off plant leaves, they are almost all big-things like deer. What's super interesting about
sloths is that they can't be big.
For their research,Pauli and his Wisconsin team studied wild sloths at a field site. When the
researchers measured the energy use of sloths, they found a wildly low burning of as little as 110
calories of energy a day.And for this, they take the cake:It is the lowest measured energetic
output for any mammal(哺乳动物).
"The measurement was intended to find out what it cost sloths to live over a day,"says
Pauli, who adds a diet of little but leaves lacks nutritional value and that the animal's small size
doesn't allow for overeating-so sloths need to find ways to make the most of their diets, which
means using tiny amounts of energy, dramatic control of body temperature and living at an
extremely slow pace.
Their reward?A wonderfully widespread ecological system to call their own,one slow inch
at a time.
8.Why is a lion mentioned in paragraph 1?
A.To admire lions'speed.
B.To state sloths'weakness.
C.To confirm lions'lead position.
D.To highlight sloths'uniqueness.
9.What is the 2016 study mainly about?
A.The lifestyle of sloths.
B.The diet of vertebrates.
C.The species of rare animals.
D.The energy use of creatures.

A.Their slow pace is a balanced choice.B.They are faced with possible extinction.

People who work with their hands may have more job security in 2023 than those who depend
on technology.A leading expert in the field of artificial intelligence,Professor Wooldridge,
explains that those manual()workers,such as construction workers, are likely safe from
the expansion of AI.
"There are lots of examples of the huge range of technologies which will make people's lives
better,Professor Wooldridge said."But the'importance of people'in carrying out a lot of jobs
has been underestimated by modern society. There are an awful lot of jobs which really require
human understanding and having a human there is really important.I'm not as pessimistic about AI
and jobs as most media has indicated.
However,Professor Wooldridge did not hesitate to warn that the new technology would be a
"damaging force"for employees who perform duties like taking phone calls."A type of job I'm
worried about is call center operators. If your job is to understand what people are telling you but
you are more or less following instructions that you've been given, this kind of job is quite
vulnerable when artificial intelligence steps onto the stage."
A 2022 study found automation is partially responsible for a drop in US industrial jobs.
Previous research has estimated a loss of 420,000 to 750,000 jobs during the 1990s and 2000s,
most of which were industrial jobs.Despite that,Professor Wooldridge says the technology is far
from capable of performing manual labor roles. He suggests that the technology like robots is
indeed taking jobs from humans, but at a much lower rate than most assume.
A recent study found that only 14 percent of workers in their study have lost their jobs to a
robot. As Professor Wooldridge said, people are generally quick to vastly exaggerate()the
rate of robot takeover.
12.What do we know about manual workers from paragraph 1?
A.They are safe from losing jobs.
B.Their work is unlikely affected by Al.
C.They know less about high technology
D.Their work depends on their technical ability.
13.What point of view does most media express about AI and jobs?
A.AI will replace the majority of human work.
B.Humans are still the main body of future work.
C.AI will bring more job opportunities to people.
D.Technologies make a difference to people's lives.
14.According to Wooldridge's perspective, who might probably be threatened by AI?
A.Construction workers.
B.Airplane pilots.
C.Receptionists.
D.Teachers.

Living in the Moment
How often do you find yourself worrying about the future and reflecting on the past?Whether
it's during a busy workday, before bed or at that weird time when we wake up in the middle of the
night, there's always something to plan for, overthink or worry about. It can occupy our minds,
cloud our judgment, and take up valuable time and energy in our lives.16
Swimming or water sports are a great way of living in the moment. You have to pay attention
to the weather, wind and waves as they could change at any moment.17 According to the
Swimming Community, immersion in cold water can help with depression and muscle aches, and
even boost the immune system.
18 Whether it's a plot or a window box, tending to them enables us to get into the
"flow".It also reminds us that, despite our best efforts, some things just don't go according to
plan一and that'sOK.Seeds might not germinate(发芽),creatures could eat our crops, orwe
might experience unfavorable weather.19 But what matters is that we are engaged with
nature's seasons and cycles, not caught in a cloud of future or past thoughts.
The benefits of making things from scratch are well-documented.From pottery to crochet(
针编织),sewing and knitting,.there's something for everyone.20_Attending a class or group
opens up the possibility of face-to-face conversation,skill-sharing and connection with like-
minded people. If you're short of time, why not try taking something with you on your commute,
such as a small cross-stitch project,or freestyle with a crochet hook and ball of yarn?Ready-made
kits can also be great if you're a bit overwhelmed with ideas.
A.They have health benefits,too.
B.Then what can we do to forget all of them?
C.These things happen and they're out of our control.
D.But,luckily for us,there is a solution:by being present.
E.These unexpected things can be avoided ahead of schedule.
F.Growing our own plants can also help us to focus on the here and now.
G.You're giving yourself time to relax, experiment and get your hands dirty.

I had been working in a game reserve(野生动物保护区)in South Africa for many years.
Though a part of me longed for the busy familiarity of Paris,I knew my life was in South Africa.
One night there was a sharp knock on my door.I wasn't expecting a visitor."Francoise? It's

Amanda,a thin young woman,was our chef.She signalled me to go outside."There's a

“An elephant?”
"She's right over there, tiny and terrified."
“It must be ET's baby daughter,”I said.
Amanda explained that she'd heard a noise outside her room. She'd taken her flashlight,
opened the door and shone it across the garden.A tiny elephant stared back at her, eyes in terror.
Not knowing what to do,Amanda had closed the door and climbed out of a back window to
call me.
Elephants are fantastic mothers-ET would never leave her baby unattended.Apparently, the
baby elephant had somehow slipped under the fence.
Amanda and I had to get her inside the house to keep her safe until we could get her back to
hermother. Her frightened eyes stared at us through the leaves.I walked slowly toward Ellie. She
watched me but as soon as I was within touching distance, she ran behind the house.Amanda and
I ran after her. Finally,we managed to corner Ellie in the parking area. She stood completely still,
head down and eyes flashing anxiously at any movement or sound.I tried approaching her again,
and this time she didn't resist, allowing us to gently get her into my home.
I kept talking to her, telling her she was safe and that we would get her back to her mum.
Then I called the reserve centre for help and,to our relief, they promised to come right away.
