Seeing Molly sleeping peacefully in Joe's bed,I walked

Good morning, everyone! It is a pleasure to talk about
a topic that has played a crucial role in my life-self-
discipline.
Self-discipline isn't just about studying hard;it's a life
skill.I've seen this in action during my study routine.Setting a
clear plan, breaking tasks into smaller steps, and sticking
to a schedule allowed me to stand out in my studies and
avoid any delay.
Self-discipline reaches beyond academics.Pursuing my
passion for playing the piano taught me that progress demands
patience.Every day,rain or shine,I practised.This
consistency not only enhanced my piano skills but also built
determination and strength.
In conclusion,self-discipline is the key to success in both
academics and life

When she was 61,Sian Davies decided to row across the Atlantic Ocean. In March 2021,she
was one of the 12 crew members who set out on the 3,000-mile journey from Tenerife to battle
sun, salt and fierce currents."We would row in three-hour shifts and only sleep for an hour or so
every six hours,"she says."For the first 15 days,I was seasick,so I hardly ate anything.I was
just rowing and collapsing.I went through some pretty dark times.
But after 42 days on the water,Davies reached Antigua to become one of the only six women
in the world over the age of 60 to have rowed across an ocean."I was exhausted and I was also so
proud of myself,"she says.
Davies began rowing when she was 53,after spotting a six-oar()rowing boat in Bristol
harbour.Attracted by its size and appearance, she spoke to the crew and was encouraged to do a
trial run."As soon as I got on the water,I fell in love with it,"she says."Feeling your whole
body working and the fresh air on your skin is amazing."
It wasn't until 2017,though,that her Atlantic plans were born.Suffering from a herniated
disc(椎间盘突出),she was only able to crawl out of bed..“I began thinking of things I could
look forward to after I had surgery, she says."One day I was reading about women adventurers
when it hit me that once better,I would row across an ocean.
After successful surgery,Davies began driving to meet other women who had undertaken
rows.Hearing the experiences and advice of them gave Davies the confidence.Soon after, she
heard that a new boat producer was organising a team for a voyage across the Atlantic and she
joined itimmediately."In June, planning to break a few world records by rowing around the UK
when I'm 64,and I want to motorcycle through the Himalayas later in the year. After all,we need
things to look back on,"she says.

What is the 15-minute city? It's the urban planning concept that everything city residents
need should be a short walk or bike ride away-about 15 minutes from home to work, shopping,
entertainment, restaurants, schools, parks and health care.Supporters argue that 15-minute cities
are healthier for residents and the environment, creating united mini-communities,boosting local
businesses, and encouraging people to get outside walk, and cycle.
Many cities across Europe offer similar ideas, but Paris has become its poster child.Mayor
Anne Hidalgo has sought to fight climate change by decreasing choking traffic in the streets and
fuel emissions.In 2015,Paris was 17th on the list of bike-friendly cities;by 2019,it was 8th.Car
ownership, meanwhile, dropped from 60 percent of households in 2001 to 35 percent in 2019.The
15-minute city figured largely in Hidalgo's successful 2020 re-election campaign.The idea has
also gained support in the US.
It clearly won't work everywhere:Not every city is as centralized and walkable as Paris. Some
car-dominated cities like Los Angeles and Phoenix would be hard-pressed to provide everything
people need within walking distance. In addition, some urban planners argue that the 15-minute
city could increase the separation of neighborhoods by income.Neighborhoods equipped with all
the conveniences required by the 15-minute city also tend to have high housing costs and wealthier
residents.
Despite some resistance, the basic principles behind the 15-minute city are influencing
planning in cities around the world, including Melbourne,Barcelona,Buenos Aires,Singapore,
and Shanghai.Urban designer and thinker Jay Pitter says cities where basic needs are within
walking distance create more individual freedom than needing to drive everywhere."In a city
where services are always close by,"he says,"mobility is a choice:You go where you want
because you want to,not because you have to.My fight is not against the car.My fight is how we
could improve the quality of life.
8.Which best describes the 15-minute city?
A.Modern.
B.Smart
C.Entertaining.
D.Convenient.
9.What's the original intention for Paris to advocate the 15-minute city?
A.To address climate issues.
B.To beautify the city.
C.To promote the bike industry.
D.To help Hidalgo get re-elected.

Exactly in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean lies Henderson Island. It is thousands of
miles away from the nearest cith.Only a few people have ever made the trip by ship to set foot on
it;usually only scientists do research there.Knowing this, you may think Henderson Island ought
to be one of the most pristine(处于原t始状态的)places on this planet..The sad reality, however,
is that Henderson Island has the highest density()of plastic trash ever reported in nature.
According to lead author Jennifer Lavers from the University of Tasmania, huge quantities of
plastic waste in all shapes and sizes have been washed up over the years on Henderson Island.Every
day, thousands of new tiny bits of plastic are thrown by tides on the white-sand beaches of the
island.Lavers and her teammates lived on Henderson Island and documented all of the man-made
trash there. The data suggests there are over37,661,395 pieces of anthropogenic(人类活动产生的)
trash which amount to 17.6 tons of plastic waste."This, however, represents only 1.98 seconds'
worth of the annual global production of plastic,"the resarchers wrote in their report.
The data is really worrisome and scary. The report shows that there's no escaping human
influence even in the most distant places on Earth. The ocean, like the land and atmosphere,is a
merged environment, which is way trash from San Francisco can be finally found on a distant
island such as Henderson Island.According to the researchers, there may be 5 trillion pieces of
plastic traveling around the world's oceans. These are washed up on shores across the planet where
they litter and pollute the environment.Animals eat these plastics, causing themselves to suffer or
die. Finally, humans can end up taking in these plastics too since we're at the top of the food
chain.
Most of the items found on Henderson Island were largely disposable or single-use things like
cigarette lighters, tooth brushes, etc. All of this trash is harmful to the island's unique ecology,
which includes ten kinds of native plants and four bird species.
So,who's blame?Everyone basically.The paper doesn't clearly say this,but all the plastic
trash on Henderson Island comes from all over the world.
12.What did Jennifer Lavers'team minly do on Henderson Island?
A.They carefully removed the plastic trash from the island.
B.They took measures to protect native plants and animals.
C.They observed how the plastic trash there affected local wildlife
D.They collected and analyzed information about plastic pollution
13.What does the underlined word "merged"in pargraph 3 probably mean?

Breaking the Habit of People-Pleasing
If you feel like you may be a people-pleaser,you're not alone. Most people have a growing
desire for pleasing others.16 It can also result in weak boundaries, problems with decision-
making, and low self-worth.For that reason,it's important to recognize and overcome your own
people-pleasing behaviors. Here are simple exercises that you can start working on today.
Practice being alone
17 Trust that people will not abandon you, even if you don't drop everything for them.
Believe you are lovable for who you are,not what you do.Practice this by going to a movie or
restaurant alone.
Keep plans with yourself
18 Otherwise, you are sending a message to your brain that a plan you make with
yourself does not hold as much value as a plan you make with someone else.Don't break any plans
you make with yourself, whether it's going to the gym or studying for an exam.
Practice saying“no”
If you're a people-pleaser,you may find it hard to say "no"because you feel it comes across
as cruel or uncaring.19 Be clear,be direct,and use "I"statements.Try statements like:"I
would really love to be able to help you,but unfortunately,I'm already committed at that time.
By consistently integrating these strategies into your life,I'm confident you'll break your
people-pleasing habits.20 This will yield an overall improvement in self-confidence and life
satisfaction.
A.So it is not necessary to say no.
B.But it absolutely does not have to.
C.Learn to love your own company.
D.You'll develop more healthy,interdependent relationships.
E.You are not confident about the plans you make with yourself.

Marco stared at the blank canvas()spreading out before him,its stark whiteness
almost laughing at his sudden lack of inspiration. He was in his final year of high school, and his
art portfolio()was fast approaching its due date in a week. This canvas was meant to be
his masterpiece, the crown jewel of his collection, but all his ideas seemed to escape the moment
he stood before it."What's wrong with me?What should I do?"Marco murmured to himself.
Having grown up in the bustling city of New York,Marco had always found beauty in the
chaos. The harshness of roaring cars, the colourful palette of street art,the symphony of diverse
tongues and the odd behaviours of the passengers-all served as inspirations for his art.Yet,now,
when it mattered most,he found himself lost.
Upset and distressed,Macro walked out, longing to run across something unexpected.
Unaware of the duration of his wandering through the streets of the city,Marco chanced upon a
small, hidden park he had never noticed before. It was a pocket of quiet amid the urban uproar,
which attracted Marco immediately. An old man sat on a bench, feeding pigeons that flocked
around him in a dance of fluttering wings.
The old man noticed Marco's thoughtful gaze and gestured him over. They struck up a
conversation aimlessly as if they had been old friends for a long time.In their talk, everything was
full of interest from life to art.At last Marco confided()his artistic block to the old man.The
old man listened intently before offering a piece of wisdom. And then, the old man stood up
slowly and patted Marco's shoulder softly."Sometimes, the best inspiration comes from the places
we least expect.Look beyond what you see."The gentleman said in all earnestness.
