Visionary architects design buildings which speak for themselves. From towering concrete
pillars to sculptural modernist domes(),the work of Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi defined
Indian architecture for the latter half of the 20th century.Known as B.V.Doshi,he was a
versatile modernist architect-he designed everything from accessible housing projects to the
Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore.Sadly, the great architect died on January 24th,
2023,at the age of 95,leaving behind a fascinating legacy.
Born on August 26th,1927,in Pune, southeast of Mumbai,Doshi grew up with his father
and grandfather,a furniture maker. As a child he came to appreciate how their house grew and
changed.In 1947,shortly before Indian independence,he began architecture school.However,he
never finished,a fact which he'd later point to in life as an advantage. He married his wife Kamala
Parikh in 1955.When she passed away,Doshi lived in a house he designed and named for his
beloved wife.
Doshi was influenced by the famous Swiss-French architect known as Le Corbusier.Doshi
studied with him in Paris and then returned to India to supervise the architect's work in
Ahmedabad. In 1956,Doshi founded his own firm called Vastushilpa. He traveled the world
lecturing at universities, worked with other famous architects, and even founded the Center for
Environmental Planning and Technology now CEPT University)focusing on understanding,
designing,planning,constructing and managing human habitats.
"We did not want to imitate someone else's approach,"he told the Louisiana Museum of
Modem Art in 2018."We wanted to find our own identity."He drew from his pride in Indian
culture to create a style distinct from Western designs."I think of my buildings as my friends,my
family,"he said."I have a conversation with them,and that's how I create niches and staircases
and openings and gardens...my buildings are not only pure and clear but designed to anticipate
changes.”
Aside from his modern works,Doshi was devoted to creating works to benefit the poor.He
designed the Aranya Low Cost Housing Project in Indore. The photographer Iwan Baan, who
photographed some of Doshi's works, described the artist as "the most approachable architect I
know.Even very poor people in his public housing projects knew him, which is exceptional."
4.Which of the following can replace the underlined word "versatile"in paragraph 1?
A.Popular.
B.Modest.
C.Forward-looking.D.Well-rounded.
5.What do we know about Doshi's life?
A.He had a miserable childhood.
B.He regretted leaving school early.
C.He made a contribution to higher education in architecture.
D.He set up his company under the guidance of Le Corbusier.
6.What does the author want to illustrate by quoting Doshi's words?
A.The public support for Doshi.
B.The originality of Doshi's works.
C.Doshi's open mind on Indian culture.

If a word is said or looked at steadily for some little time,it will be found to take on a
curiously strange and foreign aspect. This is a phenomenon called semantic satiation that affects
our understanding of words when they are mentioned too often.
The term was created by psychologist Leon James. He conducted several experiments to
explore how the concept affects our thinking and found that it is a kind of tiredness called reactive
inhibition(反应性抑制).When a brain cell fires,it takes more energy to fire afterwards, and
finally it won't even respond unless you wait a few seconds.
For example,"Black Friday (a shopping day)"is no longer as appealing as it once was.
We've repeated "Black Friday"so much that it is now as indistinct as the packages of common
Wal-Mart string cheese that you go past hurriedly on your way to argue over a half-price vegetable
steamer at 3 a.m.Hence,marketers are reconsidering their sales strategies.
One experiment he conducted sought to explore whether semantic satiation could be used to
lessen stuttering().He had an assistant call a stuttering participant and they talked on the
phone for one minute, creating a situation that increased anxiety as there were no alternative
means of communication for the participant other than speaking.Ten minutes later, the assistant
called again. And the cycle was repeated 10 times throughout the day.The goal was to induce(
)semantic satiation in the stuttering participant related to the emotion of the stress-inducing
phone call. And he says it worked.
Any word can be the victim of semantic satiation, but the amount of time before words lose
meaning can vary, with words that can draw out strong emotions taking longer due to the brain
cycling through other associations with the words. One study showed that when presented with a
tone, the sleeping cat immediately woke up.But as they played the tone again and again, the cat
took time to wake up each time, until it kept on sleeping. But when the tone was varied slightly,
the cat woke up immediately. Therefore, when teachers assign word memorization exercises to
students,it is wise to avoid repetitive memorization or the words will become meaningless to
students.
8.Which of the following can best explain "semantic satiation"?
A.It's a kind of serious language learning disability.
B.It's a reflection of the subjective nature of language.
C.It's a practice of rearranging letters to form new words.
D.It's an occurrence arising from the repetition of words.
9.How does semantic satiation affect "Black Friday"according to the text?
A.People lose their craze for "Black Friday"
B.People start buying Wal-Mart string cheese.
C.People merely show interest in goods on sale.
D.People make the best of some shopping strategies.

10.What's the result of the experiment involving a stuttering participant?
A.The participant's stuttering improved
B.The participant's stuttering was cured.
C.The participant became more stressed.
D.The participant failed to communicate.
11.What's the implication of the cat experiment for teachers?
A.Delivering classes in a clear tone.
B.Employing variations in word exercises.
C.Highlighting the importance of the word meaning.
D.Encouraging students to get up early in the morning.

Tortoise and turtle shells can be used to study nuclear pollution, scientists have found.Just as
tree rings can provide snapshots(简要说明)of the Earth's climate, and ice cores can give us
information on past temperature, researchers found that the layers of shells can be used as a time
stamp of periods with nuclear fallout.
The researchers focused on turtles and tortoises from areas that have seen nuclear pollution,
and measured the uranium()that was present in the bony outer shell that is usually made of
keratin().Each layer of shell equals to one year of the tortoise's life, and so can reveal
what happened in its surrounding environment.
Five different turtles and tortoises from natural history collections were studied. One of these
came from Enewetak Atoll, and was collected in 1978.Enewetak Atoll and its neighbor,Bikini
Atoll,in the Pacific, were the sites of 67 nuclear tests, with Enewetak the site of 43 of these.
Though the sea turtle was probably not alive during the time of the testing, researchers still found
uranium pollution in the turtle 20 years after testing ended.
Researchers also looked at an eastern box turtle from Oak Ridge,Tennessee, which is the site
of a nuclear facility that has produced and processed uranium since 1943.The turtle that was
studied from there was collected in 1962 and may have bioaccumulated radionuclides,or
radioactive materials, from uranium waste products in the area.
The research supports the idea that these animals can bioaccumulate human-made
radionuclides,or from the environment. It also supports the idea that these animals, which often
live a long time, can record information about human activity with nuclear landscapes over a long
period. We anticipate that combining analyses of historically collected and modern samples will
significantly expand our environmental monitoring abilities as they relate to ongoing nuclear
pollution questions.
12.What makes the test of uranium by the researchers possible?
A.Uranium present in the turtle shells.
B.Uranium existing in large amounts in nature.
C.The turtle shells independent from the surrounding environment.
D.The turtle shells'outer layers composed of mysterious material.

13.What can we infer from the study?
A.The turtle studied had to be alive during testing.
B.Bikini Atoll and Oak Ridge stood next to each other.
C.Enewetak Atoll had more nuclear tests than Bikini Atoll.
D.The eastern box turtle from Oak Ridge was collected in 1943.
14.What is the author's attitude towards the research?
A.Approving.
B.Dismissive.
C.Doubtful.
D.Unclear.
15.What's the best title for the text?
A.A Study on Turtle Collections
B.The Importance of Turtle Shells
C.The Severity of Nuclear Pollution

It was my first long race一a marathon..The wind and the rain chilled(使很冷)me to the
bone and the sun was yet out to warm up the air.The starting gun would go off any second.I was
ready.I was 28 and in the best shape of my life.At least,I thought I was.I ran all the time and
had already run several races. But none of them was 26.2 miles. The farthest I had run before was
only 15 miles.Still,I was young and overconfident and I knew I could do it.
The gun went off and the race started.I was excited and the weather became the furthest thing
from my mind.I just concentrated on holding my own position among the other runners.I had no
real finishing goal in mind, but when I settled into my pace,I soon worked out that I could easily
break 4 hours.
Within a few miles,I ran past an elderly runner. He must have been over 70 years old and I
was surprised he was even in the race.I was even more surprised that he was still ahead of me.He
kept to the side of the road, his old legs moving one in front of the other, slowly but stably.I
passed him without giving him a second glance or a word of encouragement.
I kept moving and had come 15 miles.I was at a pace to beat 4 hours. Then something strange
happened.I started to get tired. My goal of 4 hours soon got pushed back to 4:10.Then 4:20.
Finally,at about the 20-mile mark,I couldn't run any more.I had to walk.
I moved to the side of the road and with difficulty I walked along.I needed a second wind,
but it wasn't coming. The rain was back. There was nothing I could do about it but concentrate on
putting one foot in front of the other.
Then the elderly man passed me.He looked the same as he had earlier, running at the same
speed. As he passed,he looked at me and smiled,"Only a few more miles to go.Don't give
up now!”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2请按如下格式作答。
Thinking of being beaten by an elderly man,I moved on.
He crossed the finish line ahead of me and I was soon to follow.

参考范文:
Dear Rudy,
I'm glad to know you like Chinese food.I'm writing to tell
you an amazing activity, during which we made dumplings.
We all felt energetic. Some made the dough and dumpling
wrappers.Others prepared dumpling fillings. We succeeded in
making dumplings together due to the division of labour and
cooperation.
Although the dumplings we made were in different
shapes and might not have the best taste,we truly enjoyed
them and were proud of the fruits of our labour. This is the
first time that we have made dumplings by ourselves
through cooperation.
Hope you can join us next time!
Yours,
Li Hua

"Thinking of being beaten by an elderly

尾句可以写到比赛快结束的时候
根据续写第二段的提示句“He

比赛后的心情应该是复杂的,一方面因自

应该在本段描绘作者对自己行为的反思
和要向老人学习的想法
语一
参考范文:
Thinking of being beaten by an elderly man,I moved on.
As I said,I was young and proud, and this little setback didn't
matter much to me.So,I was determined to finish it.The
elderly man had run ahead of me,but I could still see him in
the distance.I tried to catch up with him,but no matter how
hard I tried,I wasn't getting any closer.I would not give in.
Soon,I was running at a good pace with my second wind, but
the elderly man still stayed just out of my reach.
He crossed the finish line ahead of me and I was soon to
follow.I never had such mixed emotions.I was proud of
finishing the marathon, but I was angry with myself for being
beaten by the elderly man.It was only later on that I realised
how much I admired him.I'll never forget the senior citizen
runner who put the proud 28-year-old in his place. Some day
I hope to be like him, running marathons in my 70's and
passing all those first-timers as they struggle to finish.I'll
make sure to give them encouragement.
