When he flagged me down,I thought he was an elder collecting a "customs fee",the few
dollars it costs to use village roads that lead to many of Samoa's sights. He'd been sitting lazily in
a greying roadside shack()built for such occasions.Normally I wouldn't pick up a free
rider. But I tried to live out a dream.
I'd wanted to go to Pulemelei Mound since I'd heard it mentioned in an archaeology class
years ago.The "mound"is actually a pyramid 40 feet high and roughly 200 feet across at its
base. So,I asked,"Do you know how to get to Pulemelei Mound?"
“Mmm,”he said, raising his eyebrows in the classic Polynesian gesture for“yes”.“I need
to pick up my car at the mechanic's but no hurry,I'll take you there first if you want.
You'd think that a giant pyramid would be a major sight,or at least something many people
had heard of,but it wasn't.My accidental friend's raise of the eyebrows was the most promising
prospect I'd had in a week.
We drove along the road in silence for a few minutes. Then my new friend broke the silence
and,meanwhile,my hopes."I've never been to Pulemelei,"he said."I've lived here but I
never thought of going."My heart sank.But we pressed on,crossing a stream,walking through
waist-high grass, and then another mile of hot walk until we found a sign. There, barely visible,
were the words:"Pulemelei Mound 150m".The sign marked a dark tunnel of jungle. Then the
path opened to rays of sunshine. We climbed. And then,a magical thing happened. We were
standing on top of a Polynesian pyramid.
Just then,my friend, obviously awed by what he saw, turned toward me,and placed his big
Samoan hands on my shoulders. In the most natural way,he bent down and kissed me gently on
the cheek.
“Thank you,”he said.

Everybody loves a fat pay rise.Yet pleasure at your own can disappear if you learn that a
colleague has been given a bigger one.Indeed,if he has a reputation for being lazy, you might
even be shocked and angry.Such behaviour is regarded as "all too human",with the assumption
that other animals would not be capable of this finely developed sense of grievance().But a
study by Sarah Brosnan and Frans de Waal of Emory University in Atlanta,Georgia, which has
just been published in Nature, suggests that it is all too monkey,as well.
The researchers studied the behaviour of female brown capuchin monkeys().They
look cute. They are good-natured,co-operative creatures, and they share their food readily.Above
all, they tend to pay much closer attention to the value of "goods and services"than males.
Such characteristics make them perfect candidates for Dr.Brosnan's and Dr.de Waal's study.
The researchers spent two years teaching their monkeys to exchange token (for food.
Normally, the monkeys were happy enough to exchange pieces of rock for slices of cucumber.
However, when two monkeys were placed in separate but neighboring rooms,so that each could
observe what the other was getting in return for its rock, their behaviour became obviously
different.
In the world of capuchins, grapes are luxury goods(and much preferable to cucumbers). So
when one monkey was handed a grape in exchange for her token, the second was reluctant to hand
hers over for a mere piece of cucumber. And if one received a grape without having to provide her
token in exchange at all,the other either threw her own token at the researcher or out of the
chamber,or refused to accept the slice of cucumber.Indeed, the mere presence of a grape in the
other chamber without an actual monkey to eat it)was enough to lead to resentment()in a
female capuchin.
The researchers suggest that capuchin monkeys, like humans, are guided by social emotions.
In the wild, they are a co-operative,group-living species.Such co-operation is likely to be stable
only when each animal feels it is not being cheated.Feelings of righteous indignation(),it
seems, are not the preserve of people alone.Refusing a lesser reward completely makes these
feelings abundantly clear to other members of the group. However, whether such a sense of
fairness evolved independently in capuchins and humans,or whether it originates from the
common ancestor that the species had 35 million years ago,is,as yet,an unanswered question.
8.In the first paragraph, how does the author introduce his topic?
A.By posing a question.
B.By explaining an assumption.
C.By explaining a definition.
D.By making a comparison.

D.No animals other than monkeys can develop such emotions
10.Dr.Brosnan and Dr.de Waal have eventually found in their study that the monkeys
A.prefer grapes to cucumbers

While teenagers who are at risk of depression with risky behaviors-drinking alcohol,
smoking cigarettes and cutting classes often alert parents and teachers that serious problems are
brewing,a new study finds that there's another group of adolescents who are in nearly as much
danger of experiencing the same mental symptoms.
These teens use tons of media, get insufficient sleep and have a sedentary(不爱话动的)
lifestyle.Of course, that may sound like a description of every teenager on the planet. But the
study wars that it is teenagers who engage in all three of these practices in the extreme that are
truly in a dangerous position.Because their behaviors are not usually seen as a red flag, these
young people have been called the "invisible risk"group by the study's authors.
The study's authors surveyed 15,395 students and analyzed nine risk behaviors, including
excessive alcohol use, illegal drug use, heavy smoking and high media use.Their aim was to
determine the relationship between these risk behaviors and mental health issues in teenagers. The
group that scored high on all nine of the risk behaviors was most likely to show symptoms of
depression;in all,nearly 15%of this group reported being depressed,compared with just 4%of
the low-risk group. But the invisible group wasn't far behind the high-risk set, with more than
13%of them exhibiting depression.
The findings caught Carli off guard."We didn't expect that,"he says."The high-risk group
and low-risk group are obvious, but this third group was not only unexpected. It was so distinct
and so larger-nearly one third of our sample-that it became a key finding of the study.
Carli says that one of the most significant things about his study is that it provides new early
warning signs for parents, teachers and mental health-care providers. And early identifications,
support and treatment for mental health issues,he says, are the best ways to keep them from
turning into full-blown disorders.
12.Which teenager probably belongs to the "invisible group"?
A.A teenager who drinks frequently.
B.A teenager who exercises regularly.
C.A teenager who skips school.
D.A teenager who suffers from a lack of sleep

D.Its findings were under expectation of the research team.
14.What is Carli's attitude towards the findings?
A.Unclear.
B.Positive.
C.Doubtful.
D.Indifferent.
15.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A.To introduce a new therapy for teens'mental disorder.

Yoga has been around for roughly 5,000 years but it is more popular today than ever.An
estimated 300 million people play yoga worldwide.Experts say its accessibility and the fact that
you can practice it anywhere are big reasons why.16
Yoga can improve your posture and balance, strengthen bones and muscles and keep your
back and joints healthy.17 The Downward-facing Dog pose can help relieve back pain while
the plank pose is good for building a strong core and an upper body.Typically the final position of
a yoga class is ideally done for at least five minutes.18 After that, you and your classmates
usually acknowledge each other with a special greeting.
Many people adopt yoga as a form of exercise.19 As recorded in a classic yoga text, the
philosophy of yoga is based on the idea that the mind, body and spirit are one.The practice of
yoga consists of not only physical postures but also moral guidelines, breathing techniques, and
self-awareness,helping reduce anxiety and improve focus. It is an approach to health and well-
being that aims to bring balance and harmony to all aspects of life.
20 However,a 13-year US study found that between 2001 and 2014,almost 30,000
individuals went to the emergency room with a yoga-related injury.Overstretching tends to be the
most common issue, but serious injuries-although rare-can happen even to advanced coaches.
A.Different poses offer different benefits.
B.The detailed advantages are as follows
C.Actually, yoga is a way of life at its roots.
D.This exercise is said to strengthen your body.
E.Yoga seems unlikely to send you to the hospital.
F.A lot of studies have been carried out about yoga.
G.The aim of this pose is to settle your mind and body.

“由…组成”,在句中作culture的定语,所以用过去分
词。故填composed。

thousands of years可知,that引导的定语从句的谓语动词

has。故填has appealed。

shared。
43.a解析:考查冠词。固定搭配a sense of意为“一种…
的感觉”。故填a。
