His ears lifted up, and his tail wagged as fast as it could. To his great surprise, he found himself looking at 1,000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging just as fast as his. He smiled a great smile and was answered with 1,000 great smiles that were just as warm and friendly as his. As he left the house, he thought to himself, “This is a wonderful place. Passage 2
On April 3, 2025, more than 2,300 students and teachers from Guyuan City in Ningxia started their yearly 54-kilometer walk. They did this to show their respects to the soldiers who tried to free the region. This year is the 30th year of the “walking ideological and political education class (行走的思政课)”. It started in 1995 and has inspired more than 30,000 students.
The walk starts before sunrise. The people taking part carry white flowers they made by hand and sing songs like Unity Means Power (《团结就是力量》). They walk on muddy mountain paths to Renshanhe Martyrs’ Cemetery (任山河烈士陵园). 391 soldiers were buried there. Many of them were only 18 to 25 years old. The walk is difficult. People often face rain, snow and tiredness.
This activity combines history with practical learning. Students write poems for the martyrs and act out historical stories in lessons. At the cemetery, they clean the tombstones and read the names of the dead soldiers. One student said, “Touching the cold stones made me know what sacrifice (牺牲) really means.”
Over the years, this walk has become a national model for education. Schools in China now organize trips like this. The live broadcasts in 2024-2025 attracted over 100 million viewers. New technologies, like “AI facial reconstructions of martyrs”, make students “talk” to historical figures(人物), which makes the experience even better.
Many former students, like spacecraft designer Yan Qi, said the walk taught them to be strong and work as a team. Teachers said it helps students understand the cost of peace better.
This 30-year-old tradition shows that education is not just about books. It’s about feeling history with your feet and your heart. As a teacher said, “When students walk this path, they carry on memory and responsibility.”

4.What is the main purpose of the passage?

Soon after, however, he started to do an amazing thing. He learned to make clicks (咔哒声) in his mouth to help him move around. Kish now moves about using sonar (用声音导航). He is so good at it that he can ride a bicycle by himself on public roads.

My brain then deals with the sound and turns it into pictures in my mind. It’s like having a conversation with the environment.”
Kish feels it is exciting to ride a bike using sonar, although he needs to click twice a second, much more than he usually does. “It may sound a bit dangerous to move around the world in this way,” he says. “But most people in the world are afraid of things that they imagine. Passage 1
Imagine a group of people are talking about something happily. But there is one man who cannot follow them. Why? He has a hearing problem. How can we help such people?
Now a new and exciting invention allows deaf people to see conversations in real time. Using augmented reality (AR,增强现实技术) glasses and a smartphone, deaf people are also able to join in everyday conversations.
The AR glasses were developed by Dan Scarfe after he had a Christmas dinner with his family. The man saw his 97-year-old hearing-impaired grandfather sitting alone in silence while the rest of the family were talking excitedly. The images of his grandfather always watching TV shows with subtitles (字幕) crossed Scarfe’s mind. He suddenly realized that maybe the AR glasses could help.
Scarfe got to work, working with Nreal, an AR glasses maker. Six months later, a new pair of AR glasses came out. The glasses have a microphone that receives the audio (音频) from the environment and sends it to a connected smartphone. The phone then creates subtitles from that audio and these subtitles then appear on the user’s glasses screen.
The company first tested the glasses in the UK. The UK was chosen as a testing ground as over 13 million adults in Britain have hearing loss. However, when the product goes global, it could change the lives of millions of people.
This is a great change for the deaf. Mark Atkinson, who is using the AR glasses, said, “As a deaf person myself, I am blown away by this new technology. When I tried on the glasses for the first time, I was so happy. Real-time subtitles made me become part of the conversation as never before.”

Passage 3
If you asked scientists whether monkeys and chimpanzees (黑猩猩) had a sense (感觉) of right and wrong before they had a deep study on them, they would tell you that it seemed not possible.
It was believed that only humans could imagine (想象) the future. Some people said that most monkeys were cleverer than most dogs. What’s more, if dogs seemed unhappy when they did something bad, some people believed that dogs learnt such an action to make their owners happy. It doesn’t mean that dogs understand why their owners are angry. It doesn’t mean that animals can think about the future.
Now, however, it appears that chimpanzees and monkeys may be able to think about the future. Santino is a chimpanzee and he lives at a zoo in Sweden. He is famous for his bad mood. Santino doesn’t like being looked at by visitors and he often throws stones at them. Before visitors walk into the zoo, he must have decided if he is prepared for visiting days. He begins collecting stones so that he is fully ready to throw them when people come to see him. The interesting thing is that Santino would only collect stones when he thinks visitors might come. In winter when the zoo is closed, he doesn’t collect them.
Santino’s action is a clear example of an animal planning for the future. It’s also an example to show “scientific” beliefs come from facts rather than opinions (观点). It seems likely that within ten years, we shall have a completely different view of animal intelligence (智慧).
1.What did scientists think of animals before?
A.They could think about the future. B.They couldn’t understand their owners.
C.They couldn’t know the right and wrong. D.They could share people’s happiness and sadness.
2.Why does Santino collect many stones?
A.Because he wants to build a wall. B.Because he likes to play with stones.
C.Because the keeper asks him to do so. D.Because he wants to throw them at visitors.
3.Which paragraph gives an example to show animals can also plan for the future?
A.Paragraph 1. B.Paragraph 2. C.Paragraph 3. D.Paragraph 4.
4.What does the writer want to tell us?
A.Monkeys are much cleverer than dogs. B.Dogs can understand their owners’ feelings.

Fish babies in space (太空)? What surprising news! In a space study on zebra fish, Chinese scientists have set a new record. They successfully got four zebra fish to live and grow healthily in a closed water world.
The zebra fish went to China’s space station on the Shenzhou XIII spaceship on 25th April, 2024. Since then, they have been living in a closed fish tank (缸) with some plants. The fish grew up and had babies in 43 days. It means that the fish completed a whole life stage, from growth to development and giving babies.
In their special closed environment, the plants made air for the fish and the fish’s waste gave the plants food. The scientists gave the fish food through a special needle (针管).
Such a closed environment is important for future studies in space. It means that plants and animals can live in space more easily.
The scientists also found that the zebra fish acted differently in space. For example, they often swam on their backs in space. The low gravity (重力) in space is a big reason. However, on Earth, gravity pulls everything to the Earth’s centre, and animals can find their way easily. Gravity also makes their bodies work harder and become stronger.
It isn’t the first time fish have been sent into space. Zebra fish were earlier sent to the space station in 1976. Why do scientists choose zebra fish? Humans and zebra fish share 70 per cent of the same genes (基因). So the new finding will help scientists better understand human health and human diseases.
1.What do we know about the space study?
A.There were more than four zebra fish at last.
B.It took scientists less than one month to finish the study.
C.It took place in an open fish tank.
D.Scientists from different countries did it together.
2.Which picture should be in the circle with “?” to show the environment in the fish tank?
A.B.C. D.
3.What’s the possible result of the low gravity in space?
A.Human bodies get stronger. B.Animals can easily find their way.
C.The zebra fish swim on their backs. D.The zebra fish swim in the same direction.
4.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The importance of the study. B.The ways of the space study.
C.Further studies on zebra fish. D.The differences between zebra fish and humans.
Passage 5
①Children are gaining (增加) weight. Today most teenagers are at least one size larger than children were 20 years ago. Even clothing sizes have changed. Did you know that a small size today used to be a medium one 20 years ago?
②A recent study shows 97% of children need more exercise. It’s bad news because too little exercise means you are missing a lot of good things in life. Exercise helps you in two ways.
③First, exercise helps your body. Physical activity can make your body strong. It can also keep you at a healthy weight. Doctors say that people who stay at a healthy weight have fewer health problems.
④Second, exercise can help your mind. People who get a lot of physical activity might worry less and sleep better at night. You may even learn better in school. Students who are healthy can listen and understand better in class.
⑤You can change your life and be more active at any point. It’s never too late. An article called “How to Limit Screen Time and Get Moving” gives these ideas:
Limit the screen time. Doctors call watching TV or playing video games screen time. You should have no more than two hours of screen time a day. You will enjoy life more if you live it instead of watching it!
Make fitness fun. Find a sport you like. It doesn’t need to be the traditional sports of basketball, soccer, or baseball. Those are all great sports if you like them and play them. However, you can also try hiking, skateboarding, or even jumping rope. If you enjoy the sport, you will do it.

Taking notes (笔记) is an important part of learning. Students listen to the teacher. They write down the important things. Or they use a computer. These days, many students take a computer to class to type (打字) their notes.
Some people think that using a computer is better. People type faster than they write. That means they can write more. If you can type fast, you can type every word the teacher says.
Computers are becoming very common in classrooms. Almost every student in university has a computer small enough to take to class in order to type notes. Fewer students write things down. So there is a trend in schools now to spend less time on teaching kids how to write. Schools are moving away from teaching younger students how to write by hand. Many people see no need for writing by hand.
However, studies advise that it is good to write things down. When people can’t write every word, they have to think about it more. They have to pick out what is important. And the act of writing seems to help them to remember. Studies show that people who write down their notes remember the information better. A new study, done by Princeton University and University of California, found that students who took notes by hand learned more than those who used a computer. In the study, 65 university students listened to the teacher and took notes with pens or computers. Then they did tests about how well they remembered and understood the lesson. Results show that pen users do better than those who take notes with their computers.

Do you know “hui nan tian” (“hui chao”in Chinese)? It is a special weather phenomenon (现象) in southern China. It usually comes in spring when temperatures (温度) begin to warm up and the weather gets wetter and wetter quickly.
Usually, before hui nan tian arrives, there are a few cold days, with a temperature below 12℃. As the cold air goes away, warmer air quickly comes and the temperature goes up. Then there is a lot of water vapor (蒸汽) everywhere, like on windows and walls. What is worse, the wet weather makes it easy for bacteria (细菌) to grow. Food often goes bad. Clothes are always wet. It can be dangerous when people turn on their televisions to watch TV. People will feel tired and sick during this time.
To help people live through hui nan tian, scientists say that people in the south should close their windows in the morning and evening. At the same time, don’t mop (拖) floors very often. It’s also useful to put newspapers on the floor or at the door to take in water and wet air.

Passage 11
①We know that with thousands of years of developing, people are becoming better at languages. But at the same time, language can also affect (影响) us in different aspects (方面).
②First, many studies on bilingual (双语) people show that when people change between two languages, they must think more actively than just using one, especially in the prefrontal cortex. This part at the very front of our brain is important for handling (处理) information. And bilinguals learn new languages faster. Bilingualism might make the brain stronger. One researcher found that lifelong bilinguals often get brain illnesses later than those who know only one language. Another study shows that bilinguals get well sooner.
③Language can also affect how we see the world. Studies show that English speakers think of time from back to front. But Chinese speakers think of time in the opposite way. A study found that Greek speakers could find out different colours of blue faster and better than English speakers. People who speak languages like Spanish and French may connect words with men or women traits (性状).
④What’s more, language might shape (塑造) our personality (个性). Bilinguals sometimes describe the same picture differently depending on the language they use. Studies also show that bilingual children are better at understanding others’ ideas.
⑤In short, language seems to have a bigger affect on us. The more languages we learn, the cleverer we might be. There’s still a lot to learn.

Passage 12
As everyone knows, time management is important. The more wisely (明智地) we manage our time, the better our lives will be. But do you know how to manage time wisely? Here’s some advice that may be helpful for you.
First, it’s important to make a schedule (计划表). Write down the things you need to do for the day, such as schoolwork, homework, and free time activities. This helps you keep things clear and makes sure you’ve finished everything important that day.
Second, prioritize (把……区分优先次序) your plans. Start with the most important or difficult ones, and then move on to the easier ones. This way, you can work out the biggest things first and feel pleased with what you have completed.
Lastly, don’t let other things get in your way. Focus (专注) on one thing at a time, and try not to get distracted (分心) by TV, games, or the Internet. By staying focused, you can complete things more quickly and better.
Remember, time management is a skill that gets better with practice. Keep trying, and you’ll see great improvements!

I will come back to visit it often.”
In this same village, another little dog, who was not quite as happy as the other one, decided to visit the house. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung his head low as he looked into the doorway. When he saw the 1,000 unfriendly-looking dogs looking back at him, he shouted at them. He was afraid when he saw 1,000 little dogs shouting back.
1.When did the “walking ideological and political education class” start?
A.In 1949. B.In 1995. C.In 2021. D.In 2025.

A.They drive cars through mountain paths. B.They carry machine-made flowers.
C.They sing songs like Unity Means Power. D.They study Maths problems together.

A.To show that technology is more important than walking.
B.To explain how schools use new tools to make history more vivid.
C.To prove that all schools must use AI in education.
D.To describe a new game students play during the walk.
4.What is the main purpose of the passage?

Everyone faces difficulties in their life. Daniel Kish was born with a special eye illness and lost his eyesight before he was only 14 months old.
Soon after, however, he started to do an amazing thing. He learned to make clicks (咔哒声) in his mouth to help him move around. Kish now moves about using sonar (用声音导航). He is so good at it that he can ride a bicycle by himself on public roads.
He started the organization World Access for the Blind (WAFTB) in 2000, teaching others how to use sonar. In the interview with National Geographic, he explains how the sonar works. “When I make a click sound, it produces sound waves. These waves reflect (反射) and return to my ears.
Passage 7
Standing at the foot of the big mountains, I know that real adventure (冒险) often starts with beautiful things in the nature (自然). Everyone has their own favorite place, and I also want to find mine.
Last month I went to a beautiful mountain with great expectation. Along the way, I was so excited that I couldn’t wait to watch the fantastic view (风景). However, when I arrived there, I found there were so many people and the noisy sounds made me very sad. I expected to feel the beauty of nature in a quiet place, but now it was much too noisy.
But I didn’t give up and went on climbing the mountain. As I walked on, there were fewer people and the view became more and more beautiful. When I reached another place called Mount Greenview, I saw a place full of green plants and colorful flowers. The sense of peace was growing up from the bottom of my heart at that moment. Then I started climbing. I couldn’t wait to see more. The view from the top made me feel like I was in Alice’s Wonderland.

“Pick a card, any card!”
The stories say that Robin Hood was a skilled archer (弓箭手) and he always carried a bow and arrow.
“Ha ha, too easy!”
He wore green clothes and a hat with a green feather. He lived in Sherwood Forest with a group of outlaws (逃犯), known as his “Happy Men”. The group included Friar Tuck, “Mmm, yummy!” Little John, who was unusually tall, “Little is just my nickname!”, and Robin’s true love, Maid Marian. “Take that!”
Sherwood Forest was a royal (皇家的) hunting forest near Nottingham in England. Most people thought that forests were dangerous places to go. People travelling through the forests were often robbed by outlaws.
“Your money, please, my Lord!”

The stories say that Robin Hood only took money from rich people so that he could give it to people who needed it. So he became famous for ’robbing from the rich and giving to the poor’.

The Sheriff (郡长) of Nottingham was Robin’s arch-enemy. It was the sheriff’s job to keep the woods safe and to make sure that nobody stole the king’s deer.
“What’s that? Is that Robin Hood?”
The Sherlff of Nottingham tried to catch Robin Hood, but never succeeded.
