Maybe you are ill or don’t do well in your studies. 1 I believe that if you add stress management (管理) to your daily life, you can more easily solve your stressful situations. One way to work off stress and worries is to get moving. You can do sports or just take a walk. 2
Smiling and laughing can make you relaxed. Telling a good joke to a friend, watching a good movie with your family or just smiling at the sunshine works well.
Music is the best way to reduce stress and it is popular with people of all ages. Pick the music you like. It’s usually more effective when you choose something quiet.
3 Any book that makes you know more about the world or the people in it can help you feel better.
Go out and breathe the fresh air. Can you hear the birds singing and feel the light wind on your skin? 4 Your stress will be brought away by nature.

Passage 2(2024-2025·深圳高级中学集团)
Last month we asked our students about their free time activities. Our questions were about exercise, use of the Internet and watching TV. 1
We found that only fifteen percent of our students exercise every day. 2 Twenty percent exercise only one to three times a week. And twenty percent do not exercise at all.
We all know that many students often go online, but we were surprised that ninety percent of them use the Internet every day. The other ten percent use it at least three or four times a week. Most students use it for fun and not for homework.
3 Only two percent of the students watch TV one to three times a week. Thirteen percent watch TV four to six times a week. And eighty-five percent watch TV every day! Although many students like to watch sports, game shows are the most popular.
It is good to relax by using the Internet or watching game shows, but we think the best way to relax is through exercise. 4 Exercise such as playing sports is fun, and you can spend time with your friends and family as you play together. And remember, “Old habits die hard.” 5

B. Many students like playing online games.
C. Forty-five percent exercise four to six times a week.

Passage 3(2024-2025·深圳实验学校中学部)
Courage is often thought to be one of the important spirits everyone needs. Then what is courage? 1 One isn’t necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential (潜力). Kids build courage as they are growing up.
Many people talk about connections between courage and fear. 2 If there is no fear, there is no need for courage. That is to say, courage is the ability to do what makes you feel afraid. Courage doesn’t only mean great actions such as saving one’s life or taking a big risk. 3 For example, we show courage when we raise our hand to answer a hard question during class or try a new sport.
Courage is in everyday choices we make. Can you be kind to the new kid in class? 4 Or can you stand up for someone in need? Often, these things don’t come with praise, but they need courage.
5 When we become brave enough to face failure, we’ ll be more willing to try new things and try again after we fail. Courage doesn’t always shout. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says, “I’ll try again tomorrow.”
A. You should learn to speak in public.
B. It is the ability to do something difficult.
C. Can you listen to the new person in your group?
D. Learning to fail is another important part of courage.
E. Courage always stands side by side with fear.
F. Courage also means the smaller actions of our everyday lives.
Passage 4(2024-2025·深圳实验学校初中部)
The undersea world is very beautiful. Now more and more people want to dive (潜水) in the water to find the secret there. Scuba diving is a new sport today. 1
You will find many strange animals in the sea. 2 Some give out light in the dark and some have sharp teeth.
During the day, there is enough light. Here, under the sea, everything is blue and green. When fishes swim nearby, you can catch them with your hands. When you have bottles of air on your back, you can stay in deep water for a long time. 3 And you must be very careful when you dive in deep water.
The deep sea is not an easy place to live in. It’s cold. And it’s dark too. 4 At about 3,000 feet, there is no light at all. It is very dark in the sea. Many fishes have no eyes. Some have big eyes. A few have eyes on one side. Beside the cold and the darkness, deep-sea animals face a third danger—other animals. Animals eat! They must find food to eat. Many animals eat plants. 5 This means these sea animals have two big jobs. They need to find animals as food, and they have to try not to become other animals’ meal.
A. Some are as large as a school bus.
B. However, you can’t dive too deep.
C. However, some animals eat meat.
D. It can take you into a wonderful undersea world.

Do you know what your IQ is? You can find out by taking a test. But what about your EQ(情商)? 1
EQ is a measure of your ability to recognize(辨别)and manage your emotions, as well as the emotions of others, according to Psychology Today.
Simply put, having a high EQ means that you’re a “people” person. You know yourself very well and you can easily understand others. 2 They are the ability to recognize your own emotions; the ability to use those emotions to solve problems; and the ability to manage emotions, such as by calming yourself down when you' re feeling nervous.
Does it seem obvious to you that having a high EQ can be a good thing? 3 They show great social skills, especially when they take up jobs that need them to deal with strangers often. According to MindTools, an online resource for career skill-building, many companies are now using EQ tests when interviewing new staff.
4 For example, when two friends have an argument, people with a high EQ can “read” the other person’s emotions and know when and how to stop the argument, perhaps by ending it in a humorous way.
If you feel like you have a low EQ, don’t worry. 5 A good way is using positive thinking to help you get out of failures. By doing so, you can improve your EQ gradually.
A. It’s possible to improve it.
B. Do you know what EQ is?
C. A low EQ will make us get into trouble.
D. Many experts divide EQ into three skills.
E. People with a high EQ perform much better at work.
F. Having a high EQ can help you in everyday life as well.
Passage 6(2024-2025·深圳宝安中学)
Today’s smart phones can do almost anything, but we should use them wisely. We should keep away from some bad habits when we use them.
Imagine you’ re rushing through a crowded subway station, late for a meeting. Suddenly someone is walking very slowly in front of you, playing with his/her smart phone. You will probably feel angry, but have you ever done the same thing? 1
When you see someone looking different, you may want to take a picture or a video. 2 If you want a picture, ask them first. Your friends may not mind your taking pictures of them. But if you want to post them online, make sure you ask before posting anything embarrassing (尴尬的). 3
As we all know, smart phones are great tools for communicating with friends over long distances. However, nowadays it’s common to see people sitting together, not speaking but just looking at their smart phones. 4 It may not be a good thing that you always have something to do on your smart phone. 5 So don’t spend every spare moment with your phone, and you may get many wonderful ideas.
A. Real friendships need face-to-face communication.
B. If yes, even just for your own safety, put the phone away while walking.
C. Some say that free time is necessary for creative thinking.
D. Showing their mistakes to the world is sure to hurt your friendship.
E. But recording people’s daily lives can be rude and hurtful.
F. Everybody using smart phones should be careful.
Passage 7(2023-2024·深圳麒麟中学)
American schools are quite different from those in China. In America, at the beginning of the term, students must choose their courses and teachers first. 1
2 So at the first term, don’t select too many courses, or you’ll feel very nervous and it may be bad for your study. Then you have to ask for some teaching plans. You should try to know something about subjects, time planning, marks and textbooks. At the same time, you must choose the teachers. 3 Knowing about them, you can choose the ones that suit you.
There is another thing after you select the course and the teacher. How to buy textbooks makes each student feel hard. 4 In order to save money, many students buy some used textbooks, and some students usually borrow textbooks from the school library.
In class, discussing is very important. Teachers encourage students to ask questions or show their ideas. They don’t usually ask you to sit still. 5 They don’t give you much homework to do, so in American schools you may practise and think independently by yourself.
A. The teaching methods between teachers are different.
B. Instead, teachers allow you to sit or stand in any place.
C. Different students hold different opinions about it.

Passage 8(2024-2025·深圳华附集团)
Have you heard of the “happy switch”? If people have illnesses like depression (沮丧), doctors can put a “happy switch” in their heads. 1
A hospital has tested the switch on 26 patients since 2020. Up to now, it has helped cut down a patient’s sad feelings by 60 percent, the hospital said.
In fact, the “happy switch” is a kind of Brain-Computer Interface (BCI,脑机接). It works like a bridge. 2 Some BCIs can affect people’s brain activities. Some can let people control the computer with their thoughts. Because of the good use of BCI, in the future, they will help people in more ways.
Play games.
BCI can help people play computer games without using their hands. They can think of the word “jump”. 3
Make life easier.

C. It soon helps them cheer up.
D. Many people can’t draw very well or make music.

Passage 9(2024-2025·深圳外国语学校宝安学校)
Do you like the number 13? 1 In the past, a lot of tall buildings didn’t have the 13th floor. 2 For example, the number “4” is said to be unlucky because it sounds like the Chinese word for “death”. But that’s just one example about numbers in China.
When I first came here, I was surprised to see that many websites had numbers in their names instead of letters. I soon found that this is actually convenient, as Chinese characters (汉字) cannot be used for website addresses. 3
In pinyin, the telecom company China Unicom is called Zhongguo Liantong. If the company used their pinyin name for their website address, it would be quite long. 4
In addition, the pronunciations of some numbers sound similar to other words in Chinese. This is wordplay (双关语). For example, the numbers “520” in Chinese sound similar to the pronunciation of the Chinese phrase “I love you”. 5
A. They can only use numbers or letters instead.
B. There are also superstitions (迷信) about some numbers in China.
C. In western countries, some people think the number 13 brings bad luck.
D. It is interesting to see how Chinese people use numbers in different ways.
E. So instead, they used the hotline number—10010.com. This is easier to type and remember.

When people talk about the Chinese tea culture today, they won’t miss an important person in the Chinese history—Lu Yu. 1
Lu was born in 733 A. D. in Tianmen, Hubei. 2 During one trip, Lu Yu saw a spring (泉). The water was very clear and clean. When Lu Yu made tea with this spring water, he found the tea tasted better than usual. 3
Lu Yu is best known for his book The Classic of Tea (《茶经》). In the book, he describes how to plant tea trees, to process the leaves, and to prepare tea as a drink. 4 According to Lu Yu, tea is cold in nature. It cures body heat, thirst, dry eyes, etc.

What do you usually do in your spare time? Chatting online is now a national pastime (消遣) in China, especially among the post-90s and post-00s generation. 1 But hidden rules do exist (存在), as long as you take the time to look for them.
Get to the Point.
When sending a friend request, include your real name and any other identifying (身份辨别) information. Remember, everybody’s time is valuable. Never send an “Are you there?” without any follow-up messages. 2
Send the Right Things.
Please send texts, not voice messages. It might be easier for you to speak than type, but what about the people on the other end? 3 Also, never send information by voice message—it is hard to note down. Emojis (表情符号) and GIFs can save the day when you find yourself in an embarrassing conversation, or words fail you.
4
You can always judge a person’s mood by their text messages. If the person you’re talking to says “Good night” or “I’m going to take a shower”, that’s probably not what they’re actually going to do. 5 If someone waits for longer than three seconds before saying “Yes”, they probably really mean “No”. If you receive these emojis from friends who are older, read them literally (照字面地) (such as a smile or a wave). For the post-90s and post-00s generation, however, the meanings of the emojis might be totally different.
A. They may be unable to listen to a 59-second message right now.
B. It is just an excuse to stop talking to you.
C. To some people, however, online chats can seem like a kind of polite conversation.
D. The quicker that you get to the point, the more likely the other person is to reply.
E. Try to Understand.
Passage 12(2023-2024·深圳耀华实验学校)
Interesting people are often popular. 1 Then how can you become an interesting person? Here is some useful advice.
2 Doing the same things every day can be boring. You can learn a new sport or pick up a hobby. New activities will make your life full of fun and surprises.
Go on a trip as often as you can. Seeing more of the world can help you learn more about different people and places. 3 These can give you lots of material (素材) to make your talk fun.
Spend more time with interesting people. 4 Watching how they talk is a great way to get you started in the right direction. Over time, you may become interesting.
Ask questions. Being interesting can mean talking about yourself, but it also means showing interest in other people. Asking questions shows you are listening. 5 That’s because open-ended questions can let others talk more.
Do you find the advice helpful? Come and give it a try!
A. Try out new activities.
B. Read different kinds of books.

Passage 11(2023-2024·深圳红岭实验学校新洲分校)
