Passage 1
Do you have any problems in your life and don’t know how to be happy? If so, you will find Being a Happy Teenager written by an Australian writer Andrew Matthews.
In his book, Matthews tells us how to have a happy life and answers the questions of teenagers. There are many subjects, such as parents and friends, and the book says we should stop being angry and should forgive (宽恕). The book tells us some useful ways, such as how to understand better what you learnt. Many teenagers think happiness comes from a good exam result or praise from other people. But you can still be happy when there are no such “good” things.
Success comes from a good attitude (态度). If you learn from problems, you will have success in the future. Some school students have problems, such as being too tall or too short. But Matthews tells us that happiness comes from thinking in a positive way. If you are tall, you can get a better view when you see a film; if you are short, your clothes and shoes take less room in your bedroom! This is Matthews’ most important lesson, “You choose to be happy!”

2.What’s in Matthews’ book?
3.According to Paragraph 2, where does happiness come from for many teenagers?
4.In your opinion, what else can we do to be happy in our daily life?

According to the World Health Organization (组织), just like smoking, loneliness can lead to people’s health problems. In many countries, even young people are now feeling lonely. What can we do to fight this problem?
Asa Koski is a social scientist in Lulea, Sweden (瑞典). She believes one way is to encourage (鼓励) people to say hello to others when they meet. She recently started the “Sag hej! (Say hi)” project. Workers put up advertisements about the project on buses and teachers offer different lessons to students at schools to encourage people to communicate with each other more. Lulea is near the Arctic Circle (北极圈). Winters there are long and cold. The temperature can drop to -15℃ almost all year around. But Koski doesn’t think the weather alone has made young Swedes feel lonely. People like playing games on mobile phones for too many hours. It’s a far bigger reason.
An American girl Lauren Ell first came to Sweden as an exchange student in 2014. “Making friends with Swedish students is almost not possible.” she says. Many of her classmates would go home after school and play video games. Ell has lived in Sweden for ten years now, but she still feels like she is an outsider. She thinks the “Sag hej!” project could be a good way to help with the problem. “I’m very happy to see many people put down their phones and are glad to talk to each other now.” Lauren Ell said.
Teachers in Lulea have reported that the project has already worked. More and more students are willing to say “Hi” when they meet each other every day.
Koski says, “Saying hello to someone sends out a message that you’re willing to stop and chat or to help if there’s a problem. For some people, that can really help a lot.”

Passage 4
A Cloud is made of water drops or ice crystals floating (漂浮) in the sky. There are many kinds of cloud. Clouds are very important to Earth’s weather.
The sky can be full of water. But most of the time you can’t see the water. The drops of water are too small to see. They have turned into a gas called water vapor (水蒸气). As the water vapor goes high in the sky, the air goes cool. The cooler air causes the water droplets (微滴) to stick to things like dust (粉尘), ice or sea salt.
Clouds get their names in two ways. One way is by where they are found in the sky. Some clouds are high up in the sky. Low clouds form closer to Earth’s surface. In fact, low clouds can even touch the ground. These clouds are called fog. Middle clouds are found between low and high clouds.
Another way clouds are named is by their shape. Cirrus clouds (卷云) are high clouds. They look like feathers. Cumulus clouds (积雨云) are middle clouds. These clouds (层云) look like giant cotton balls in the sky. Stratus clouds are low clouds. They cover the sky like bed sheets.
Most of the water in clouds is in very small droplets. The droplets are not heavy so they can float in the air. Sometimes those droplets join with other droplets. Then they turn into larger drops (水珠). When that happens, gravity (重力) causes them to fall to the Earth. We call the falling water drops rain. When the air is colder, the water may form (形成) snowflakes instead.
Clouds are important in our daily life. At night, clouds reflect (反射) heat and keep the ground warmer. During the day, clouds make shade that can keep us cooler. Studying clouds helps people have a better understanding of Earth’s weather.

Do you ever feel like you are just running from one activity to another? In school, do you hurry from one subject to another? When things happen so fast, it’s easy to get lost of what you’re doing or learning. It’s important to stop yourself now and then to think about what you are doing or learning.
Self-reflection (反省) means slowing down and calming yourself down. By being calm and not going quickly, you give your brain a chance to think about what you have learned. Some people like to do self-reflections only in their mind. Others write down in diaries or notes. You can follow the steps to do self-reflection.

Sometimes you know the unit is over because there is some kind of test. Use these natural breaks to stop and do self-reflection.
Then, find a quiet place and take out your reflection diary. Write down some notes on the new things that you have learned in the unit. Let your mind think about the notes you’ve written before and make some connections (联系).
Finally, think about things that you’ re not sure of. Maybe you learned a new way to work out a math problem, but you’ re not sure when to use it. Writing down your questions will help you remember to look for answers the next time you are working with the same topic.
Self-reflection is important for a successful student. If you have never taken the time to do self-reflection, try it now.

First, choose the proper time to do it. School textbooks are usually divided (被分成) into units of study. This makes it easier to begin self-reflection. Look for time when you finish a unit of study.

When I have a lot of housework to do, I’ll always start with the easiest task (任务). I ask myself which one is going to be the quickest to finish. And that’s the one I start with.
I love listening to music when I do chores. I sometimes sing and dance while I clean. And the housework is done before I know it I feel excited at the same time. It’s a win-win.

There were three good officials (官员) who lived during the Spring and Autumn Period (770—476 BC).
Zichan was the prime minister (宰相) of the State of Zheng. He made many changes to help the state become stronger. While doing this, he listened to the ideas of people.
Zijian lived in the State of Lu. He was an official in Chanfu in today’s Shandong province. People saw him as a good example of non-action (无为). It seemed that he didn’t work hard, as he spent lots of time playing music. But he used people of integrity (贤人) to run the place.
Ximen Bao was an official in the Wei State. He worked in Ye County in today’s Hebei province. There, people threw a girl into a river as a bride (新娘) for the so-called River God. The witch and some officials said this could help stop floods. Ximen Bao stopped them by throwing them into the river. Then he built canals (运河) along the river. This stopped the floods for real.
According to the Records of the Historian (《史记》), these three men were good leaders. Zichan made it impossible for people to cheat (欺骗) him. Zijian made people not want to cheat him, while Ximen Bao made people dare not to cheat him.

Law means leaders follow and use rules strictly. This is done not to punish (惩罚) people, but to earn their trust.

Because Australia is such a large country, weather in different parts is different in the country.
