Passage 1
(24-25高二上·辽宁锦州·期中)
One morning in April, when I found something was wrong with Alice’s mother, it rained. It seemed as if the Texas sky were sobbing (啜泣). I didn’t know what kind of cancer Mrs. Hastings had until later, but I knew her condition was serious — very serious.
I love Mr. and Mrs. Hastings almost as much as I love my own parents, and Alice is my best friend. But I didn’t want to go to school that day. And I sure didn’t want to see Alice.
What could I possibly say to her? What do people say to their friends at such a time? I tried every trick I knew to avoid going to school. But my mother insisted.
“You have a history test this morning, Linda,” she said, looking at me as if she’d crawled into my mind and knew I was just making excuses. Then she smiled and said, “Be sure to stay close to Alice, especially today, because that poor girl is going to need your strength.”
Strength? What was Mother talking about? I had no strength. I didn’t even know what to say to my best friend. I hid out in the reading room between classes in the hope of avoiding meeting with Alice, but she was never out of my thoughts. I kept trying to come up with something appropriate to say to her because I really wanted to get it right.
Alice and I had the last class in Mrs. Green’s class. I’d avoided seeing her all day, I was going to have to face her in the last period, and I still didn’t have a plan. However, I worried needlessly because Alice never showed up for class. When the English class was over, Mrs. Green said, “Linda, Alice Hastings is your best friend, and she is coming here in a few minutes to get her lesson assignments.”
It seemed as if something was torturing (折磨) my heart and I trembled inwardly. I still didn’t know what to say to Alice, and time was running out.

Passage 2
(24-25高二上·山东潍坊·期中)
Lucy and I met in the ninth grade. Until then, I had a few good friends with whom I shared many of the same interests, but never in my life had I experienced a friendship quite like the one I shared with her.
Lucy and I shared everything. At times it even seemed like we shared a brain. Lucy and I both had a thing for taking photos of our shadows in the moonlight. Some nights we would keep away from everyone else, and walk around school, the park, even train tracks with our cameras— searching for the perfect shot of our shadows cast on the sidewalk beside us.
A few months before I met Lucy, I was diagnosed (诊断) with a rare nervous system disease that would progress if left untreated. I was misdiagnosed for months. Consequently, a lot of time was wasted on the wrong treatments and I was getting worse and worse. Lucy was the first friend I ever told about my situation.
“Eventually I might not be able to walk, be in the sun, digest food, eat like a normal person. Or worse,” I said as we sat on a bench one day after school. She was quiet for a moment.
“Well, if you can’t walk, I’ll push you and if you can’t eat, I’ll have a food fight with you anyway, and if you become allergic to light we’ll still be able to go shadow-hunting. I’ll be your emotional sunscreen—SPF (防晒指数) 1,000.”
“My SPF 1,000, huh?”
“Yup,” she laughed.
I hugged her. “Thank you.”
Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months and my health worsened. It was getting increasingly difficult for me to get around. Lucy was there with me, every “step” of the way. Finally, things got bad enough that I was forced to leave school. Hospital became my home away from home and I was often there for months at a time. I was very sick and unable to stay in contact with friends, even Lucy. Though I had a nurse to take care of me, I felt lonely. I needed someone to talk to, a friend.

Passage 3
(24-25高二上·浙江·期中)
I knew healing my relationship with Dad was vital, but how to go about it was another story. At the time the gulf between us seemed insurmountable (无法逾越的). My feelings of being criticized and rejected by Dad were my deepest wound.
In my early years I was the apple of his eye, and he was a hero in my childhood. We played sports and games, and often went fishing together.
As adolescence approached, however, everything changed. It became clear that I was determined to forge my own path, one completely different from his expectation. In school I was having behavioral problems, being a class joker and breaking all the rules. And having my parents read my school report was a nightmare for me. Sometimes I was punished. Their disapproval made me feel even worse. Punishments only added to the hurt.
My dad had no idea how to deal with me. He became silent and distant, setting a wall and pretending that he didn’t care. That was even more painful to me than my mother’s voiced disapproval. I hated him for that, and pretended that I didn’t want anything to do with him. We lived under the same roof, but we were a thousand miles away from each other.
I continued to have trouble with school until the time I chose to drop out and pursue my interests in music. I became totally focused on my spiritual growth, which sent shivers (寒颤) through my father’s mind. There were many hard feelings between us, feelings that hardened as time went by.
For much of my twenties, I went about my life without much of a relationship with my dad. We had stopped trying to change each other, but the walls remained, thick and cold between us.
Things all began changing four years after mom told me it was time to deal with Dad. Hesitant for a long time, I finally took her advice and wrote my father a letter.

Passage 1
(24-25学年高二上·四川成都·期中)
Ella loved her school life. However, there was one class Ella worried about more than any other class - art. She didn’t know why she just wasn’t good at drawing, painting, or cutting. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t seem to master the skills.
Ms. Amanda, the art teacher, stood at the front of the room. “Class, next Friday our school is going to hold an art competition,” she announced. Amanda was a great teacher, and Ella liked her a lot. But this announcement made Ella nervous. “Everyone in the school will have to create a piece of artwork to show in the library. You can use the different types of art work we have been studying." Ms. Amanda was quite excited when she spoke while Ella found herself sitting lower in her chair.
Ella had the whole weekend to work on her project, but she could not think of anything to do. As Friday drew near, Ella felt frightened. She knew she couldn’t draw or paint well enough to make something that would stand out. So after school Ella asked Ms. Amanda if she could write an art paper instead of doing an art project.
“I understand this project scared you, Ella,” Ms. Amanda said. “Just remember, you can create any kind of art you want.” Ms. Amanda smiled at her: “Art is a person’s way of expressing his or her feelings. It isn’t always painting, drawing, or cutting. I know you will think of something very creative, and I can’t wait to see it.”
Ella finally decided to face her fears and gave it a try. When Ella arrived home, she took out a piece of paper and a pencil. She remembered Ms. Amanda’s words. “Art is a person’s way of expressing his or her feelings.” Ella wrote the word “terrified” on her paper. She crumpled the paper and threw it to the side of her desk.
Then Ella stared at the crumpled ball. Suddenly an idea struck her.
Why not create something out of crumpled paper? The crumpled paper reminded her of a snowball, inspiring Ella to explore a new way of creativity. Without the need for drawing, painting, or cutting, she crafted numerous paper balls, skillfully glued them together and placed them on a big piece of hard paper to form a snowman. Wearing a hat made of black paper and a scarf made of red paper, the snowman looked wonderful. Ella felt a deep sense of satisfaction with her finished project.

Passage 2
(24-25高二上·山东德州·期中)
I was in love with acting, and I’d even studied method acting for developing deeply emotional, intense roles. When I tried out for the school play, The Twelve Dancing Princesses, I was confident I’d get one of the best parts. But Mr. Ellison, the director, didn’t offer me any role. Instead he encouraged me to join the stage crew.
I often felt that my parents paid more attention to my academically gifted older sister, Diana. Therefore, a few weeks later, when Mom told me that she’d bought tickets for the whole family, I started to wonder if I should have been honest about being on the stage crew. But I couldn’t tell them the truth. Plus, I wasn’t convinced I would be behind the scenes on the opening day.
Once Susan, Princess Six, missed rehearsal (彩排) for a dentist appointment, and I volunteered to stand in and read for her. I hadn’t rehearsed the dances, but I followed along and improvised (即兴创作) and I nailed her lines. After rehearsal, Mr. Ellison said, “You were very enthusiastic out there. ”
On the performance day, I woke up early, feeling so thrilled. The spotlights and curtains the set crew put up transformed the gym into a real theater. Mr. Ellison asked us to arrive by six, and told whoever we were bringing to come early for good seats. I cheered, and so did the actors.
Diana dropped my family off at ten to six. Actually, the stage crew didn’t have to be there until 6: 30, but I was excited, and I still hadn’t told my parents I wouldn’t be onstage. They could figure it out when they saw the show, and I’d deal with it then.
Then Mr. Ellison came in and announced that Christy, Princess Eleven, injured her ankle during the rehearsal yesterday and couldn’t take the stage. He muttered, “Where am I supposed to find a new princess? ”

Passage 3
(24-25高二上·广东汕头·期中)
On Sunday afternoon, Janice had words with her mom and then angrily rushed out of the house. She couldn’t help weeping when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes... but I don’t have money on me,” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man. “Come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered Mother’s familiar face and weathered hands. “Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home. As Janice approached the doorway, she took a deep breath.

Passage 1
(24-25高二上·山西太原·期中)
“I just want a normal birthday party,” Amy told Bailey as they walked home from school. Amy’s parents loved the environment, and Amy happened to be born on Earth Day, so all her parties had an Earth Day theme.
Amy couldn’t forget the “Throw-Out Blowout” when she turned seven. Her friends coming to the party helped out at her yard sale and donated the money to charity. And when she turned eight, it was a “Tree Spree”, planting maples. Last year, “The Print Sprint”! They collected newspapers to recycle.
So Amy firmly decided to plan her own party this year. One day, as Amy loaded the dishwasher, she cleared her throat. “I’ d like to go to Maze Craze (疯狂迷宫) instead.” “Really?” said Dad, surprised. “I guess we could try that,” said Mom. With her parents’ approval, Amy couldn’t wait for her birthday and invited lots of her close friends. They expected that they would have so much fun and wouldn’t have to think one bit about the Earth.
The following weekend was right Amy’s birthday. Amy and other friends all gathered in the parking lot outside Maze Craze. Amy appreciated their coming and excitedly shouted out “No more shovels (铲子)! No collecting recyclables! Nothing earthy about it!”

Passage 2
(24-25高二上·陕西渭南·期中)
The Araguaia River is one of the biggest rivers in Brazil. It is home to thousands of animals, like bright blue and yellow macaws. River dolphins swim and play in the water, and there are many different coloured fish.
In one town, a 13-year-old boy named Rhenan walks along the river every day. But looking at the river makes him worry because there is trash (垃圾) everywhere. He sees plastic bottles, old clothing, and empty food packages. The water looks dark and ugly.
At school, Rhenan asks about the dirty river. “You wouldn’t want trash in your house,” says his teacher. “Think about the poor animals!” For days, Rhenan couldn’t stop thinking about the river. It doesn’t seem right to him that this big and powerful river is filled with trash. “It’s hurting the animals in my area,” he thinks. “And it’s also hurting the families who live here.” Then Rhenan has an idea.
The next morning, Rhenan talks to his mother about his plan for the river. He wants to go around his town and ask for everyone’s help. Maybe if they all work together, they could clean up the river! Rhenan’s mother loves his idea. “I believe the most important thing for you, Rhenan, is learning how to change things that you care about. That will stay with you forever.” she says. She tells him she will help him along the way.
The next day, Rhenan goes to the police department. Next he goes to the Mayors office (市长办公室). He visits offices, businesses, and other schools. Soon he has a very big group of people who like his idea! They all decide to meet at the river the following week. On the day of the river clean-up. Rhenan is excited — but he is also nervous. Passage 3
(24-25高二上·河北·期中)
The morning sun shone through the curtains as I stood in the kitchen, carefully preparing lunch for my daughter, Emma. Today was a big day — her first day of elementary school. I packed her lunch in a bright, reusable lunchbox, the same kind my mother used to pack for me when I was a student.
“Mom, why can’t I use a plastic lunchbox like the other kids?” Emma asked, her small face frowning in confusion. I knelt down to her level, moving a piece of hair out of her face. “This lunchbox is part of our family tradition, sweetheart. When I was your age, your grandmother would pack my lunch in a similar container every day.” “But why, Mom?” she persisted(坚持不懈). “Isn’t it easier to just throw away a plastic lunchbox?”
I smiled and remembered my own school days, feeling frustrated(沮丧的)that I couldn’t just use a disposable(一次性的)box like everyone else. My mother would patiently explain, “We have to start with small actions, Mija. These little things add up to make a big difference.”
I remembered feeling out of place at school as my friends casually threw their plastic boxes into the trash, while I carefully saved my containers to take back home. It wasn’t untill was older that I fully appreciated the lesson my mother was teaching me.
Then I patiently explained to Emma, “Your grandmother always said that we have to take care of our planet. By using these reusable lunchboxes, we help reduce waste and protect the environment. It’s a small way to make a big difference.”
Emma looked at the lunchbox thoughtfully. “So, do I have to wash it after I eat?” “Yes,” I nodded. “It’s important to take care of it and bring it back home so we can use it again. It’s not just about the lunchbox, Emma. It’s about learning to be responsible and thinking about how our actions affect the world around us.”

Passage 1
(24-25高二上·广东深圳·期中)
On a cold, snowy evening, Jack was at the corner shop with his sole focus on the Marvel (漫威) superhero figurines(小雕像). Since then, he had diligently walked a neighbor’s dog and weeded his neighbors’ gardens to earn money for one figurine. Finally he had enough money for one and raced towards the corner shop. Lost in excitement, he accidentally tripped over a homeless old man seated against a wall in the cold, quickly murmuring an apology before continuing on his way.
Inside the shop, Jack glanced at the shelves displaying IIuik, Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, and other beloved heroes. His heart raced as he reached for the Spiderman.
“You’re a fan, right?” a friendly voice appeared behind him.
Jack turned to see the shopkeeper, an elderly man with a warm smile. “Yes, they’re amazing!” Jack said. “They’re strong, and they help so many people. They have super power. I wish I could be a superhero too.”
“You can be,” the shopkeeper encouraged.
Surprised, Jack asked, “But how? I don’t have any super power.”
Smiling softly, the shopkeeper bent down, placing his hands on Jack’s arms. “Why would you need them?” he replied kindly. “See that woman over there? She needs to take care of three children. However, she still actively helps the elderly in the community. And do you know Jimmy? He is a firefighter who has saved countless lives. Being a hero isn’t about super power; it’s about what’s in your heart.”

Passage 2
(24-25高二上·浙江·期中)
The event that stands out in Tom’s memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old. He was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first, he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.
“Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop.” someone yelled.
Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.
Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor through the smoke.
They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor (走廊) when Jane suddenly stopped. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed her.
Jane had suddenly remembered the old lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Mary. Jane began banging on Mary’s door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around then, Tom could see many of their neighbors — some still in their pajamas (睡衣) — running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.
“She would have run for safety like everyone else!” cried Tom. However, Jane refused to give up.
“I know Mary’s still inside.” She said she was familiar with Mary’s daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded against the door. “Go downstairs. Go now! Go!”

Passage 3
(24-25高二上·山东临沂·期中)
Every autumn, the small town of Maplewood hosts a Scarecrow Festival (稻草人节), where families gather to create or display their homemade scarecrows, all competing for the title of “Best Scarecrow”. This year, Emma was determined to participate with her little brother, Oliver. They had spent weeks gathering old clothes, straw, and paint to carefully plan their masterpiece.
On the morning of the festival, Emma and Oliver were busy creating their scarecrow in their front yard. The air was clear with the scent of fallen leaves, and children’s laughter filled the yard as other families prepared. Just as they were adding the final touches — a brightly painted pumpkin head and a jaunty hat — Mrs. Parker, their elderly neighbor, walked by with her cane. She had always been a comforting presence in the neighborhood.
“Good morning, Mrs. Parker!” Emma greeted her with a cheerful wave, her hands covered with paint.
“Good morning, dears,” Mrs. Parker replied warmly. “That scarecrow looks wonderful. You two have really outdone yourselves.”
“Thank you!” Oliver smiled, “We’re hoping it wins the contest.”
A gust of wind blew, swirling leaves around their feet, and Mrs. Parker fell, nearly losing her balance. Emma quickly steadied her, heart pounding with concern. “Are you okay, Mrs Parker?” she asked worriedly.
Mrs. Parker smiled weakly, “I’m fine, just a little unsteady these days. This old cane isn’t quite what it used to be.”
Emma and Oliver exchanged worried glances. Seeing Mrs Parker’s frailty (虚弱) was an obvious reminder of her age. After she continued on her way, taking slow, cautious steps, Emma turned to Oliver. “We should keep an eye on Mrs. Parker. She’s been so kind to us, and she might need help.” she said firmly.
Their parents often reminded them to look out for their neighbors, especially those older or living alone. Emma recalled the many times Mrs. Parker had brought over cookies or helped with school projects, her gentle presence a comforting constant. She also remembered Mrs. Parker stories about winning the Scarecrow Festival in her younger days with her beautifully crafted scarecrows, which were always the highlight of the event. Her expertise in scarecrow making was well-known in the neighborhood.
Realizing that true kindness and community spirit meant being there for others in times of need, Emma and Oliver knew it was time to repay Mrs. Parker’s kindness.

Passage 1
(24-25高二上·四川·期中)
It was in the afternoon before the end of the Second World War that Antonio Black, who was twelve, caught sight of a beautiful brooch (胸针) in a shop window. The brooch is so beautiful that he was unwilling to leave the store until he had purchased it. But it was too expensive — $5. His family was very poor and his parents struggled to make ends meet. Five dollars would buy almost a week’s food for his family.
Antonio couldn’t ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Susan. Slim and beautiful, his mother was the center of the home and the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children, but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.
Nevertheless, he opened the shop’s door and went inside. Standing proudly and straight in his flour-sack (面粉袋改做的) shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time?”
“I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. “People around here don’t usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should keep for a while.”
Antonio respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would be surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering (锤打) from a side street, Antonio suddenly had an idea that he could raise money by selling the used nail bags. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Antonio knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece. That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin.

Passage 2
(24-25高二上·广东·期中)Back around the turn of the 2010s, I was working part-time in the library while I was at college. One afternoon, a man and his young son approached the counter, their presence breaking the silence. The man’s accent suggested he was from Africa, and his eyes sparkled with warmth that immediately put me at ease.
They were returning lots of educational picture books, covering a wide range of topics from maps and geography to animals, history, and the wonders of space and the solar system. As I scanned the books, I couldn’t help but notice the little boy’s excitement.
”Wow! You must be hungry for knowledge!“ I exclaimed, smiling at the boy.
”Yes! I love all the pictures!“ he replied, his eyes shining with curiosity.
I turned to the father, impressed by his son’s enthusiasm. ”You must be proud! Not every boy of his age likes to read!“
The father’s face lit up with a smile. ”When I was his age, I had none of this. No books, no pictures. I am learning with him. It is a blessing. Did you know there are eight planets in our solar system?“
”Yes, I did,” I replied, nodding.
“Then you are so lucky!” he exclaimed. “Did you know there used to be nine planets? ”
I smiled and said, “Haha, yes, I know that too. Poor Pluto was demoted (降级).”
The father’s eyes twinkled with humor. ”Small like I was, but now I am big and I can read any book I want! “
As he placed the son’s library card on the counter, I noticed it was a typical children’s card, easily obtainable at most elementary schools. I asked the father if he had a card as well.
”No, only for the children, yes?“ he replied, uncertainty in his voice.
”Anyone can have a library card as long as you have some ID,“ I explained.

Passage 3
(24-25高二上·广东深圳·期中)
George had his eye on a scoring record. He took a deep breath as he stood in the doorway, looking in at the basketball court. The gym was old and small, but it held a long history. Maybe today I’ll make history, George thought.
His basketball league was celebrating. Today’s championship game marked its 50th anniversary (周年) since the league’s first championship.
George looked over the brochure for the anniversary. It listed the winners of each championship game and the top scorers. He stopped suddenly when he read the name of the top scorer from a game 30 years before. He quickly went through the rest of the list. “Look!” he said to his teammate David, showing him the brochure. “You see who has the all-time record? My dad! He never told me that.”
“24 points,” David said. “That’s awesome!”
George’s best record was 19 points. He was the Badgers’ top scorer. “It seems that my dad never showed off something like that,” George said.
When his parents arrived, George brought the brochure over to them. His dad laughed. “I didn’t miss a shot in that game. But look at the score. I would have traded every shot for a win,” he said with regret. George hadn’t noticed that his dad’s team had lost the game just by one point. “That was a great group of teammates,” his dad added. “You have great teammates in the Badgers, too.”
As George warmed up, he was still digesting his father’s words. “This will be a struggle every second,” the coach emphasized before they got on court to play. “I want to see tough defense, sharp passing, and, above all, smart play as a team.”
George was confident he could lead the Badgers to victory, just as he did in their previous games against the Lions. And he played really hard. As the game neared its end, George had already scored 23 points. Another basket would break his father’s scoring record.
However, his team was now one point behind the Lions. As the final seconds ticked away, George’s heart pounded with the rhythm of the game. Gripping (紧握) the ball, he scanned the court for an opening. Then, seeing David unguarded, a realization hit him. Echoing through his mind were his father’s teachings about teamwork. “It’s not just about scoring,” George whispered to himself. With determination, he made the crucial decision to pass the ball to David.

Passage 1
(24-25高二上·安徽蚌埠·期中)
A little guardian of the forest and its creatures
Ten-year-old Maya skipped along the forest path. The late afternoon sun was setting, painting shifting patterns of light and shadow. Maya loved exploring the woods near her home, always on the lookout for adventure.
Suddenly, a low sound made by some animal reached her ears, pulling her attention from the playful shadows. It seemed to come from a small mass of bushes beside the path.
Inspired by curiosity, Maya carefully pushed through the leaves. There, hidden among the bushes, lay a tiny hedgehog (刺猬). It looked frightened, its eyes barely open, and there was a long, deep cut on its leg, blood coloring the leaves red. Tears welled up in Maya’s eyes. This little creature looked so weak and alone. She knew she had to help. Softly, she gathered the hedgehog into her cupped hands. She could feel its trembling body and knew she had to bring it home quickly and give it immediate medical care.
But then, disaster struck. A large, black shadow cast a darkness over them. Maya looked up, her heart sinking into her stomach. A hungry eagle, larger than she had ever seen, sat on a nearby branch, its eyes fixed on the injured hedgehog in her hands.
Fear threatened to consume Maya, but she knew she couldn’t give in. She held the hedgehog close to her chest and backed away slowly, her eyes never leaving the watchful eagle.
The forest seemed to hold its breath as Maya and the eagle engaged in a silent standoff (对峙). Maya prayed the eagle would lose interest and fly away. But the fierce bird remained, its gaze (注视) cold and frightening.
Thinking fast, Maya knew she had to find a way to scare away the horrible bird as fast as possible --she had to make herself appear bigger and fiercer.

Passage 2
(24-25高二上·广西·期中)
Pinky was standing at the kitchen window when she first saw the bird fly past. In its mouth, it held some straw. Pinky strained hard to look out of the window, but the bars held her back. She only saw the bird turn the far corner of the kitchen and fly out of sight.
And just then her grandmother called out sharply, “Pinky, why haven’t you made your bed yet?” “Coming, Nani!” Pinky responded, rushing to her room and excitedly sharing the bird sighting with her grandmother. Nani, however, was more concerned about household chores than bird watching.
After lunch, Nani cleared the kitchen and lay down for a nap (午睡). Then Pinky raced back to the kitchen and took up her position at the window. The minutes ticked by on Nani’s old clock on the kitchen shelf but the bird did not come. Pinky knew that Nani never slept for long and once she was up, hanging around watching for the bird was out of the question. Suddenly, she had an idea. The terrace! She could watch for the bird from the terrace!
As Pinky reached the terrace, she drew in her breath sharply. Oh horrors! The bird was actually building a nest in her grandfather’s room, which was out of bounds. Nobody was allowed inside. He had passed away four years back but his things were all there. Nani might even throw out the nest.
In the days that followed, Pinky watched helplessly as the bird flew in and out of the room from the broken window. How hard the bird worked to build a home for her or maybe her babies! And how terrible if Nani should suddenly decide to throw it out! Suddenly Pinky knew she had to help the bird. She simply had to shift the nest out of the room.
The task was challenging since the room was locked, and the key was attached to Nani’s clothes. But when Nani went to bathe, Pinky seized the opportunity to take the key and open the door.

Passage 3
(24-25高二上·湖南常德·期中)
A sudden shake made Anna White awake. Rubbing her eyes, she noticed the vase on the corner table shaking. It was just going to fall from the corner, but she managed to catch it just in time. Then she realized that it must be an earthquake. She rushed downstairs to look for her parents and brother. But everyone was sleeping soundly as it was just 3 in the morning. She screamed, “MOM! DAD! CHASE!” Her heart pounded as the quake continued. She knew what was happening, but what should she do?
“CHASE ...!” she called her elder brother Chase again. Chase had got up and was on the stairs. He was very scared when he felt the stairs shaking. He was about to fall on the stairs but quickly grabbed the railing (扶手)for support. “What was that?” he asked and looked towards Anna who was sitting under a table in the dining room and he quickly joined her.
Their mother, Lisa, soon appeared in the dining room. She’d felt the shaking from her room. Realizing it was an earthquake, she quickly came under the table with them and asked Chase and Anna if they were OK. Her eyes stared nervously at the door.
“Where’s Dad?” Chase asked after a moment, his voice tense. Anna’s stomach tightened with worry. They knew their father, a doctor, was often called away for emergency cases, sometimes even at night.
Lisa hesitated, her voice trembling, “He went on an emergency call ... We just need to stay safe. Dad will be fine. Don’t worry about him.”
Tears welled in her eyes as the weight of the situation sank in. The idea of him being out there, in the middle of an earthquake, was terrifying.
Suddenly, a loud crash came from the building next door. Through the window, they saw a nearby building shaking violently, sending clouds of dust into the air.
“This is too dangerous,” Chase said, glancing around. Without another word, they grabbed each other’s hands and ran out of the building.

【答案】
I left the classroom, racing down the hall and out of the front gate of our school. I was so nervous to see her. I told myself to calm down and thought about what my mother had told me this morning. I said to myself, “I am her best friend. Encouraging her to face her mother’s illness bravely is what I should do.” I wrote down the words which I wanted to say, hoping my letter would comfort her and give her courage. After finishing the letter, a familiar figure came into my sight. That was Alice. I ran to her immediately.
As I drew nearer to her, my throat tightened, making it impossible to speak. I wanted to reach out to her, to offer a hug or at least a reassuring smile, but my body seemed frozen in place. Alice looked at me and tears dropped from her eyes. I hugged her and summoned up the courage to say, “I am sorry to know your mother’s illness. Remember whenever you need help, and I will be your side. Be brave and don’t let your mother down. Then I handed my letter to her. Alice took over it and held my hand tightly.

【答案】
One day, an unexpected visitor arrived at my hospital bedside. It was Lucy, with her familiar smile and a bag full of goodies. She looked at me with those warm, comforting eyes and said, “Hey, how’s it going? I’ve brought you some of your favorite books and snacks. I know you’re probably bored here, so I thought we could catch up and maybe even read a chapter together.” Her words were like a ray of sunshine breaking through the darkness of my hospital room. I felt my spirits lift as we talked and laughed, sharing stories of our old adventures and dreaming up new ones. Lucy’s visit was a reminder that even in the darkest times, friends can bring light and hope.
With Lucy’s company and doctors’ proper treatment, things began to improve. My strength slowly returned, and I was able to spend more time out of bed. Lucy and I continued to bond, sharing our thoughts and fears about the future. She was always there to listen, to offer advice, and to remind me that I was not alone. Slowly but surely, I began to regain my independence. With Lucy’s unwavering support, I was able to face my illness with courage and determination. I knew that no matter what challenges came my way, I had a friend who would stand by me until the end.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
After sending the letter, I felt a heavy weight on my mind. Would he receive it? How would he respond? I waited for his reply, nervously opening up the mail each day. Days later, his response arrived. I read the letter again and again, disbelief washing over me — it wasn’t the distant, silent dad I knew but someone wise, tender, approachable. I plucked up my courage and called him. We both fumbled for words, but couldn’t find any. Finally, a shaky “I love you” passed between us before we hung up, both overwhelmed by the weight of the moment. His words had stirred a deep desire for me to see him, to seek for the love that we had lost for so long.
I visited my father soon after receiving his letter. My time with my father was sweet and meaningful. We sat on the porch, the familiar scent of cut grass and old wood filling the air. The awkwardness of the past seemed to melt away, replaced by a shared history of laughter, tears, and the unspoken desire for connection. Though our paths had been apart, they were now coming back together. It was a conversation filled with a quiet understanding. It was a conversation filled with shared openness. It was a conversation filled with unexpected warmth. Together, we stepped forward on a journey towards healing and forgiveness between a father and a son.

Ms. Amanda approached her, beaming with pride. “You have created a remarkable piece of art. I am so proud of you!” she exclaimed. Proud of herself too, Ella had a greater sense of accomplishment when Ms. Amanda placed a first-place star on her artwork. It was through this experience that Ella learned that true creativity does not come from perfection but from the courage to express oneself in unexpected ways.

【答案】
Gathering all my courage, I raised my hand. Ellison decided to let me replace Christy, and I couldn’t contain my excitement. As we took the stage, my heart raced. I hadn’t practiced Christy’s dance steps, so I had to follow the other actors as best as I could. Despite my efforts, I stumbled on a few moves and mixed up my lines several times. Each mistake felt like a weight on my chest, but I pushed through, determined to give it my all.
Maybe no one noticed “my mistakes”, I thought secretly. When the final curtain fell, I felt a wave of guilt wash over me for not performing perfectly. But to my surprise, Mr. Ellison came over with a smile. “You handled that beautifully, especially with the last-minute changes, ” he said, praising my stage presence. As my parents and Diana learned that I had only stepped in as a temporary replacement, their faces lit up with pride. Their warmth enveloped me, and in that moment, I realized I had their support. With newfound determination, I decided to keep pursuing my dream of acting, feeling more connected to my family and my passion than ever before.

Paragraph 1:
When Janice pushed the door open and entered the home, she found her mother was not in. The house was quiet, with only the soft hum of the refrigerator breaking the silence. Janice felt a pang of guilt as she looked around the familiar surroundings, remembering the argument they had earlier. She walked over to the kitchen and saw a note on the table, written in her mother’s neat handwriting. “Janice, I’m sorry for losing my temper. I’ve gone to the market to buy some fresh ingredients for dinner. Let’s talk when I get back.” Janice’s heart sank as she read the note, realizing that her mother had been worried about her and had even apologized first. She felt a wave of gratitude and love wash over her, and decided to wait for her mother to return, ready to apologize and make things right.
Paragraph 2:
Her thoughts were brought back by a gentle touch on her hair. Janice turned around to see her mother standing there, with a look of concern and relief on her face. “Janice, you’re home! I was so worried about you,” her mother said, hugging her tightly. Janice felt tears welling up in her eyes as she hugged her mother back. “Mom, I’m sorry for what I said and did. I didn’t mean it. I was just so upset,” Janice apologized, her voice trembling. Her mother smiled and wiped away a tear from Janice’s cheek. “It’s okay, sweetie. I’m sorry too. Let’s not argue anymore and enjoy our dinner together,” she said, holding Janice’s hand and leading her to the dining table. As they sat down to eat, Janice felt a sense of warmth and peace wash over her, knowing that no matter what happened, her mother’s love and support would always be there for her.

As the bus drove away, I stood there, hoping and praying that she would truly grasp the significance of our family tradition and the impact it could have on our planet.

Go now! Go!”

【答案】One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
At the same time, Tom noticed the flame was growing higher and higher. The heat was intense, and the smoke was thickening, making it hard to breathe. Despite the danger, Jane didn’t give up. She continued to pound on Mary’s door, shouting, “Mary! Mary! Wake up!” Tom, feeling a mix of fear and admiration, stood beside her, urging her to leave. Finally, the door creaked open, and a dazed Mary appeared, coughing and full of confusion. Jane quickly grabbed her hand and pulled her out into the hallway.
Paragraph 2:
Luckily, some neighbors passing by stopped and offered help. Two strong men ran there and supported Mary, who was weak and struggling. Another neighbor gave Jane a wet towel to cover her nose and mouth. Together, they guided Mary, Jane, and Tom through the smoke-filled corridor to the stairway. The sound of alarm grew louder as firefighters arrived, and the crowd outside cheered as they emerged safely.

【答案】
That afternoon, instead of heading directly to the festival, Emma and Oliver knocked on Mrs. Parker’s door. Her eyes lit up when she saw them. “Hello again, dears. What brings you here?” “We thought you might need some help or company, Mrs. Parker.” Emma said gently. Mrs. Parker’s face softened with a grateful smile. “That’s very kind of you. I could use some help with a few things.” As they tidied up her garden and arranged her living room, Mrs. Parker noticed their scarecrow supplies. With her experienced hands, she showed them how to weave the straw more tightly and suggested adding a bow tie for a touch of elegance. She even shared her secret technique for making the scarecrow’s face look more expressive, a skill she had honed over many years of participating in the festival.
Eventually, they all headed to the town square together to attend the competition. Emma and Oliver proudly wheeled “Mr. Pumpkinhead” to their spot, Mrs. Parker following closely behind. The town square buzzed with excitement, filled with vibrant scarecrows and happy families. As they arrived, a small crowd gathered around their scarecrow, admiring its charming rustic appearance. A judge approached them with a ribbon. “Congratulations! ‘Mr. Pumpkinhead’ has won the title of Best Scarecrow!” Emma and Oliver exchanged thrilled glances. The real victory, they realized, was the joy and companionship they shared with their dear neighbor, Mrs. Parker, whose expertise had played a crucial role in their success.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Every day after school, Antonio started his plan. Cold and hungry, Antonio wandered around, searching for nail bags carefully from one street to another. To save more money, the determined boy even decided to deliver papers in the early morning. Every coin he won went to the soda tin, his treasured “bank”, and then all the tiredness disappeared magically. Each time he passed by, the brooch in the shop window would remind him what he did was worthwhile. Day by day, his soda tin became heavier and heavier. Six weeks passed before he even knew it. Then approached Christmas Eve.
The day finally came! Antonio stole into his room and cautiously took out the soda tin, poured all the coins out and began to count. Five dollars and twenty cents! He counted it a second time, and no mistake. His hard work eventually paid off! Holding the soda tin firmly, Antonio rushed for the shop without a second’s delay. Wearing the beautiful brooch and knowing the story behind it, Susan was too overjoyed to utter a word. She just threw her arms tightly around her beloved son. “Merry Christmas, Mom”, the son announced proudly. “You too.” the proud mother echoed. Well, no dream is out of reach for a willing heart.

【答案】
His face brightened as he pulled out his passport and said, “Oh! ID! I have!” Though I didn’t recognize the country, it was clearly his. “Then you can have a library card too,” I said, smiling. “Oh! Oh! How much?” he asked, concerned, “Nothing! It’s free,” I replied, enjoying the surprise on his face, “Free? Like…no money?” he asked, disbelief in his voice. “Yes! No money! Now you can pick out twice as many books,” I said, gesturing to the shelves. The father turned to his son, his face cheerful. “Come! Pick out more books! I want to learn what you learn!”
As they walked away, their arms were loaded with books. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of joy and fulfillment. This encounter was one of my all-time favorites, and it reminded me why I will always love and support libraries. Their love for learning and their appreciation for the gift of knowledge serve as a constant reminder of the power of libraries and the importance of sharing our resources with others. And so, as I continue to work in the library, I am grateful for every encounter that reminds me of the magic that lies within these walls, waiting to be discovered by anyone who dares to explore.

After celebrating with his team, George ran to hug his parents. “You still have the record” he told his dad. Dad smiled. “You have something more important. A championship. And great teammates. Congratulations on your history!

【答案】
Looking around her, she found a tree branch twice as long as her arm. Picking up the branch with all her might, she raised it above her head, making herself look like a fighter with a weapon. “I will not let you hurt this little creature!” she cried out, her voice laced with newfound courage. The eagle hesitated, its gaze shifting between the branch and the girl. And all of a sudden, Maya hit the branch against a nearby tree trunk. The sudden noise shocked the eagle, and it finally took off, disappearing into the thick forest.
Maya watched the eagle fly away, her heart pounding. Her legs still trembled because of the fight a moment ago, but she was filled with a sense of relief. She had faced her fear and protected the little hedgehog. As she held the injured creature in her arms, Maya knew this was just the beginning. She had a new mission now, a responsibility to care for this tiny being who had captured her heart. From that moment on, Maya knew she wasn’t just a little girl looking for adventure in the woods; she was a protector, a guardian of the forest and its creatures.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________
【答案】
There was no time to lose. With the nest held firmly in her hands, Pinky ran out of the room. Her eager eyes swept the scene, but there was not a single spot suitable for a little nest. Finally, she placed the nest which she was so careful of on the corner of the window. “There,” she said happily. “now the bird can’t miss it!” She turned around, clapping her hands. Then she locked the door and ran down to put back the key. After doing this, Pinky was very glad and full of excitement.
However, the next day, when Nani decided to clean the room, Pinky’s heart sank. She followed Nani, nervous about what would happen to the nest. Upon entering the room, Pinky and Nani found a broken egg where the nest had been. Nani wondered why the foolish bird laid an egg without a nest. Pinky, in tears, admitted it was her fault for moving the nest. Nani comforted her and explained the importance of not interrupting the wildlife. Hearing Nani’s words, Pinky felt comforted and hoped that the bird would return and rebuild the nest the next year.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
They managed to arrive at the street and saw a chaotic scene. People were rushing past, many with faces pale with fear, while others were helping those who had fallen or were injured. A young man was supporting an elderly man, and a woman was comforting a child who was crying. Despite the panic and chaos, there was a sense of unity-neighbors helping neighbors, strangers offering assistance. Anna noticed volunteers and rescue workers pushing through the crowd, and found comfort in these small acts of kindness - a brief glimmer of hope in the chaos.
Paragraph 2:
In the middle of the rescue workers, Anna spotted a familiar face - her father. He was helping an injured man, his medical bag open beside him. “Dad!” she shouted, running toward him. He looked up, his face covered in dust, but his expression calm and focused.“ Stay back and keep safe,” he said, gently guiding Anna and her family to safety.“ I ‘ m helping these people. We need to stay away from the worst - hit areas.” Anna ‘ s heart swelled with relief and pride as she watched the surrounding people. Though the world around them seemed to fall apart, Anna knew they would survive the disaster with love.
