The development of self-control begins at birth and continues throughout our lives. As babies, we have little or no control over our behaviors and emotions, but as we get older, with the help of parents or caregivers, we learn how to take turns, how to pay attention in class, stick to a challenging task, and restrain (制止) from hitting another child. These abilities continue to develop in our childhood and then youthhood. Also, it is clear that being impulsive (易冲动的) can have bad effects on children, causing interpersonal problems, poor physical health, and psychiatric disorders. Therefore, by learning self-control, children can make right decisions and respond to situations in positive ways. One of the effective strategies, when helping children develop self-control abilities, is to select developmentally proper tasks. Try setting up simple goals first, where success is expected, before moving onto the next goal. For preschoolers, goals might include not interrupting or not fighting on the playground. For early elementary school students, right goals might be following bedtime rules. However, it's not enough to set up simple goals, because for children of the same age, there are still some differences in the development of self-control abilities. Some general strategies often help them learn right self-control behaviors. •Take a break Encourage children to take a break or "time in” whenever they feel down, annoyed or angry. Stepping away from an upsetting situation can help a child calm down. •Teach and provide attention Paying attention is a skill that can be taught. Encourage children to resist interrupting by learning to observe others without talking, so they can join in easily. Make sure to provide children with attention at times so they don't feel ignored and therefore are unlikely to interrupt. •Use proper rewards(奖励) In order to develop positive behaviors, children need frequently positive feedback. Praise and consistent feedback can be highly rewarding for young children. It is important to let a child know what a desired behavior is. •Use activities designed to teach self-regulation (自我管理) Using specific activities can help teach young children skills that improve self-control. Some of these skills include dealing with "wanting something I can't have” understanding feelings, and controlling anger. 18. What can we learn from Paragraph 1? A. As people get older, their attention will improve naturally. B. Being impulsive can often cause bad results in children's grades. C. Children can learn how to control themselves with the help of parents. D. Self-control development begins at birth and keeps growing till youthhood. 19 What can teachers do when students feel very disappointed? A. Teach and provide attention. B. Give rewards and suggestions. C. Teach skills to regulate themselves. D. Encourage them to take a break. 20. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Time Waits for No Man — The Development of Self-Control B. Have Power over Your Mind — Tips on Developing Self-Control C. Prevention Is Better than Cure — Rules of Self-Control Behaviors D. Think Twice Before You Act — The Importance of Self-Control Skills B Technology Progress On June 22, 1927, Charles Lindbergh flew into Dayton, Ohio, for dinner at Orville Wright’s house. It had been just a month since the young pilot’s first ever individual nonstop crossing of the Atlantic, and he felt he ought to pay respects to the pioneer of flight. Forty-two years later, on July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong was allowed to bring a personal guest to the Kennedy Space Center to view the launch of NASA’s towering Saturn V rocket. Armstrong invited his hero, Charles Lindbergh. That’s how fast technology advanced in the 20th century. However, progress isn’t what it used to be now. Northwestern University economist Robert Gordon argues that by 1970, all the key technologies of modern life were in place: electricity, highways, telecommunications, and the like. After that, innovation (创新) and economic growth simply couldn’t keep going as fast as the last 100 years — a period Gordon calls “the special century”. Gordon argues the lives of people in developed nations look and feel the same in 2020 as they did in 1979 or 1989. Slowing down is good in one small way, though bad in most of the ways that count. Rapid changes can sometimes be disorienting And when things develop at a lower speed, people and institutions do have more time to breathe and fit in. But slowing down isn’t what it should be. In many areas of technology, the forward movement today feels tragically slow, even nonexistent. Consider consumer robotics. There’s huge potential for robots to help us. But home robotics companies seem to keep folding. For example, social robot maker Jibo closed in March after raising almost $73 million. Our century’s one signature technology achievement is smartphones. At this point, we’ve had them in our pockets long enough to begin to appreciate their dangers. Meanwhile the list of possibly world-changing technologies that get people’s attention but still remain in the original stage is very long. Self-driving cars, AR glasses. Need I continue? Indeed, these are all hard problems. But historically, solving the big problems has required continuous, large-scale investment (投资), often with private markets and taxpayers sharing the cost. In this century, we need to undo some bad results of the last great boom (繁荣) by developing affordable zero and negative emissions technologies right now. That’s another hard problem — and to solve it, we’ll need to rethink what made the “special century”, so special. 21. The writer mentions Charles Lindbergh in Paragraphs 1 and 2 to show that ______ . A. Charles has contributed greatly to technology B. Charles paid respects to the pioneer of flight C. technology developed rapidly in the 20th century D. technology has advanced to a higher new level 22. The underlined word “folding” in Paragraph 5 probably means ______ . A. shutting B. separating C. growing D. operating 23. What can we learn from the passage? A. Some world-changing technologies are not making progress. B. Home robotics companies failed because of little investment. C. It’s time to realize the disadvantages of fast development now. D. It doesn’t take us long before we realize the dangers of smartphones. 24. The writer probably agrees ______ . A. markets and taxpayers have a duty to develop technologies B. innovation and investment are needed for technology advance C what made the last century special will happen in the new century D. rapid changes in technology are bad in most of the ways that count C “I will think of it.” It is easy to say this, but do you know what great things have come from thinking? Sir Isaac Newton was sitting in his garden when he saw an apple fall from a tree. He began to think and tried to find out why the apple fell. Then he discovered how the sun, moon, and stars are kept in their places. A boy named James Watt sat quietly by the fire, watching the lid (盖子) of the teapot move up and down. He wanted to find out why the steam in the teapot moved the lid. From that time he went on thinking and thinking. And when he became a man, he improved the steam engine (蒸汽机) so much that it could easily do the work of many horses. James Ferguson was a poor boy. Once, seeing the inside of a watch, he wondered, “Why don’t I make a watch?” But how could he make the mainspring He soon found he could make it with whalebone (鲸骨). He then made a wooden clock which kept good time. His motto (座右铭) was “I will think of it.” And he made his thoughts useful to himself and the world. Boys and girls, when you have a difficult lesson to learn, don’t lose heart, and don’t ask someone for help before helping yourselves. Think, and by thinking you will learn how to think creatively. 25. According to the passage, how do some great things come about? A. By listening. B. By reading. C. By speaking. D. By thinking. 26. The idea of Isaac Newton’s discovery was from ________. A. the falling of an apple B. the cleaning of a garden C. the moving of the stars D. the moving of a lid 27. Which was the achievement of James Watt? A. He kept thinking. B. He found the steam in the teapot. C. He greatly improved the steam engine. D. He watched the lid move up and down. 28. What is the right order of the following sentences? ①James Ferguson made a wooden clock. ②James Ferguson saw the inside of a watch. ③ James Ferguson made the mainspring with whalebone. A. ③②① B. ②③① C. ②①③ D. ③①② 29. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Learn to ask for help when you have a difficult lesson to learn. B. When you have a difficult lesson to learn, think where it comes from. C. The three great achievements come from thinking. D. Think, and by thinking you will learn how to think creatively. D Some time ago, I came to realize that I wasn’t improving much at the things I cared most about even though I put in a lot of effort. Through talking to others and doing some research, I found this stagnation (停滞) is actually quite common and that the most effective people and teams in any field do something we can all emulate (模仿). They go through life back and forth between two zones (区域): the learning zone and the performance zone. In the learning zone, our focus (焦点) is on getting better. We try new things and practice things we’re not quite perfect at yet. Making mistakes is expected, even welcomed, because that’s how we learn and grow. This is different from the performance zone. When we’re performing, we want to do our best. We focus on the skills we’ve already mastered and try to reduce mistakes. The reason many of us don’t improve much despite our hard work is that we tend to spend almost all of our time in the performance zone. This gets in the way of our growth over the long term, also our performance. So what does the learning zone look like? Let’s take Demosthenes as an example. He was a political leader and the greatest lawyer in ancient Greece. To become great, he didn’t spend all his time just being a lawyer, which would be his performance zone. But instead, he did activities designed for improvement. He studied law with guidance from mentors, but he also realized that being a lawyer involved persuading (说服) other people, so he also studied great speeches and acting. And since courts at the time were very noisy, he also practiced by the ocean, projecting his voice above the roar of the waves. It is this type of practice in the learning zone that leads to real improvement, not just time on task performing. Now, this is not to say that the performance zone has no value. It very much does. Being in the performance zone allows us to get things done as best as we can. It can also be motivating, and it provides us with information to know what to focus on next when we go back to the learning zone. So the way to high performance is to alternate between the learning zone and the performance zone, purposefully building our skills in the learning zone, then applying (应用) those skills in the performance zone. This way, we keep getting better and better. Remember, it’s important to know when to focus on learning and when to focus on performing. While we need both, the more time we spend in the learning zone, the more we’ll improve. 30. You are probably in the learning zone when you ________. A. try to learn new things for improvement B. practice things you’re perfect at already C. try your best to avoid making mistakes D. focus on the skills you have mastered 31. Why does the writer talk about Demosthenes in Paragraph 3? A. To explain why many of us don’t improve much. B. To suggest some ways of changing learning habits. C. To stress the importance of being in the learning zone. D. To show how people improve skills in the learning zone. 32. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Working Hard Helps Make Improvement B. The Real Value of Learning and Performing C. The Way to Get Better at Things You Care about D. Focusing on Skills Development Helps You Grow Want to find out how you can learn a new language as fast as possible? (addition) __________, he has spent a lot of time raising money to build more schools for the poor area. 【答案】In addition to teaching 【解析】 【详解】考查固定短语。 故填In addition to teaching。 16. (while;opposite) Healthy eating habits can lead to a good body, __________. 【答案】while unhealthy ones bring the opposite 【解析】 【详解】考查连词和时态。 故填while unhealthy ones bring the opposite。 17. (动词的-ed分词作状语; admire) __________, they greatly __________for her efforts to become an artist. Moved by her performance ②. admire the little girl 【解析】 【详解】考查过去分词和动词短语。 故填①Moved by her performance;②admire the little girl。 A Self-control is a skill that children need to succeed in school, socially and emotionally. Some of these skills include dealing with "wanting something I can't have”, understanding feelings, and controlling anger. 18. What can we learn from Paragraph 1? A. As people get older, their attention will improve naturally. B. Being impulsive can often cause bad results in children's grades. C. Children can learn how to control themselves with the help of parents. D. Self-control development begins at birth and keeps growing till youthhood. 19. What can teachers do when students feel very disappointed? Think Twice Before You Act — The Importance of Self-Control Skills 【答案】18 C 19. D 20. 根据第一段中的“As babies, we have little or no control over our behaviors and emotions, but as we get older, with the help of parents or caregivers, we learn how to take turns, how to pay attention in class, stick to a challenging task, and restrain (制止) from hitting another child. 根据“•Take a break”部分中的“Encourage children to take a break or “time in” whenever they feel down, annoyed or angry. “Have Power over Your Mind — Tips on Developing Self-Control(掌控你的思维——培养自控力的技巧)”既点明了“自控力”这一核心主题,又突出了“培养技巧”的重点内容,最适合作为标题。故选B项。 B Technology Progress On June 22, 1927, Charles Lindbergh flew into Dayton, Ohio, for dinner at Orville Wright’s house. A. markets and taxpayers have a duty to develop technologies B. innovation and investment are needed for technology advance C. what made the last century special will happen in the new century D. rapid changes in technology are bad in most of the ways that count 【答案】21. C 22. A 23. C 24. 根据第二段中的“That’s how fast technology advanced in the 20th century. 故选A项。 根据第六段中的“At this point, we’ve had them in our pockets long enough to begin to appreciate their dangers. 根据最后一段中的“Indeed, these are all hard problems. But historically, solving the big problems has required continuous, large-scale investment (投资), often with private markets and taxpayers sharing the cost. C “I will think of it.” It is easy to say this, but do you know what great things have come from thinking? 26. 通读全文,尤其是尾段中的“Boys and girls, when you have a difficult lesson to learn, don’t lose heart, and don’t ask someone for help before helping yourselves. Focusing on Skills Development Helps You Grow 【答案】30. A 31. D 32. 根据第二段中“In the learning zone, our focus (焦点) is on getting better. We try new things and practice things we’re not quite perfect at yet.(在学习区,我们的重点是变得更好。 故选A。 根据第三段中“So what does the learning zone look like? Let’s take Demosthenes as an example.(那么学习区是什么样的呢? 以及“It is this type of practice in the learning zone that leads to real improvement, not just time on task performing.(正是学习区的这种练习导致了真正的进步,而不仅仅是完成任务的时间。)” 通读全文,尤其是根据最后一段中“So the way to high performance is to alternate between the learning zone and the performance zone, purposefully building our skills in the learning zone, then applying (应用) those skills in the performance zone.(因此,获得高绩效的方法是在学习区和表现区之间交替进行,有目的地在学习区培养我们的技能,然后在表现区应用这些技能。)” 因此,C选项“The Way to Get Better at Things You Care about(在你关心的事情上变得更好的方法)”是本文的最佳标题。 Want to find out how you can learn a new language as fast as possible?
