It was a dark autumn night. The old banker was walking up and down his study and remembering how, one autumn evening fifteen years before, he had given a party.
There had been many clever men, and they had talked of capital punishment. The majority disapproved of the death penalty (死刑). They considered it immoral and ought to be replaced by imprisonment for life.
“I don’t agree,” said the banker, “the death penalty is more moral than imprisonment for life. Capital punishment kills a man at once, but lifelong imprisonment kills him slowly.”
Among the guests was a young lawyer, a young man of twenty-five. When asked, he said, “if I have to choose between the death penalty and imprisonment for life, I would certainly choose the second. It’s better to live somehow than not to live at all.”
The banker struck the table with his fist and shouted at the young man, “It’s not true I’ll bet you two millions — you wouldn’t stay in a cell even for five years.”
“If you mean it seriously,” said the young man, “I’ll take the bet, but I would stay not five but fifteen years.”
“Fifteen? Done” cried the banker, “Gentlemen, I stake (下注) two millions!”
“Agreed! ___40___!” said the young man. And this wild, senseless bet was carried out!
And now the banker, walking to and from, asked himself, “What is the object of that bet? What is the good of that man’s losing fifteen years of his life and my throwing away two millions?” Then he remembered what followed that evening. It was decided that the young man should spend the years of his imprisonment under the strictest supervision, in a lodge (小屋) in the banker’s house. He shouldn’t be free to go out, to see human beings, or to hear the human voice. He was only allowed to have some books. The agreement restricted the young man there exactly fifteen years. The slightest attempt on his part to break the rules — if only two minutes before the end — released the banker from the obligation to pay him the two millions.
For the first year of his imprisonment, the prisoner suffered severely from loneliness and depression. The books he sent for were novels with a complicated love plot, fantastic stories, and so on. In the second year, the prisoner asked only for the classics. In the fifth year, he did not read books. More than once he could be heard crying. In the sixth year, the prisoner began enthusiastically studying languages, philosophy, and history. In the last two years, the prisoner read a large quantity of books. At one time he was busy with the natural sciences, then he would ask for Byron or Shakespeare.
The old banker remembered all this, and thought, “Tomorrow at twelve o’clock he will regain his freedom, and I ought to pay him two millions. If I do pay him, it’s all over with me.” Fifteen years before, his millions had been beyond his imagination, now he was in great debt.
“Cursed bet” cried the old man in despair, “The only way out for me is that the man should die.”
The clock had just struck three. The banker felt his way in the darkness into the lodge. He struck a match. Not a soul was there. Only a letter! A letter from the prisoner!
“Tomorrow at twelve o’clock I’ll regain my freedom. For fifteen years I have diligently studied earthly life. Your books gave me wisdom. To prove to you in action how I despise (鄙视) all that you live by, I waive (宣布放弃) the two millions, which I once dreamed of as paradise and which now I despise. I shall go out from here five hours before the fixed time, and so break the agreement...”

A. He could scarcely contain his impatience to come face-to-face with the lawyer.
B. He was overcome with intense excitement regarding the result of the bet.
C. He feared that he might suffer substantial monetary losses on account of the bet.
D. He was concerned about the possibility that the young man would run away.

A. You bet your millions and I bet my faith
B. You stake your millions and I stake my life
C. You bet your millions and I bet my career
D. You stake your millions and I stake my freedom
42. What was the young lawyer’s original intention to agree to be confined in the banker’s lodge for fifteen years?
A. To earn a large sum of fortune. B. To defend the false truth of the world.
C. To enrich his soul by extensive reading. D. To fight against the false-hearted banker.
43. What conclusion can be drawn from the evolution of the lawyer’s book preferences throughout his fifteen-year period of confinement?
A. A man’s taste in reading rarely remains consistent over the course of time.
B. The lawyer progressively advanced to a more sophisticated level of reading.
C. Methods of passing time will inevitably undergo changes as time goes by.
D. The lawyer ultimately became obsessed with reading an array of diverse books.
44. Which of the following may account for the lawyer’s giving up the two millions?
A. A good name is easier lost than won.
B. Money spent on the brain is never spent in vain.
C. Wisdom in the mind is better than money in the hand.
D. What we acquire without sweat we give away without regret.
45. What can serve as the best title of the passage?

C 41. D 42. A 43. B 44. C 45. B
根据第一段“It was a dark autumn night. The old banker was walking up and down his study and remembering how, one autumn evening fifteen years before, he had given a party.(那是一个漆黑的秋日夜晚。老银行家在书房里踱来踱去,回想起十五年前的一个秋夜,他曾举办过一场派对。)”和倒数第四段中“If I do pay him, it’s all over with me.” Fifteen years before, his millions had been beyond his imagination, now he was in great debt.(“如果我真的付给他钱,那我就完了。”
根据第六段““If you mean it seriously,” said the young man, “I’ll take the bet, but I would stay not five but fifteen years.” (“要是您说的是认真的,”年轻人说,“我就跟您赌,但我要待的不是五年,而是十五年。”)” 、第七段“Fifteen? Done” cried the banker, “Gentlemen, I stake (下注) two millions!”(“十五年?一言为定!”银行家喊道,“先生们,我下注两百万!”)”和第八段中“Agreed!(同意!)”和“said the young man(年轻人说)”可知,银行家下注“两百万”,年轻人下注的是“15年的自由”即15年的狱中生活。B选项“You stake your millions and I stake my life(你赌上你的数百万,我赌上我的生活)”符合题意。
根据第五段“The banker struck the table with his fist and shouted at the young man, “It’s not true I’ll bet you two millions — you wouldn’t stay in a cell even for five years.”(银行家用拳头敲了敲桌子,对年轻人喊道:“这不是真的,我跟你赌200万——你甚至不会在牢房里呆五年。”)”第六段““If you mean it seriously,” said the young man, “I’ll take the bet, but I would stay not five but fifteen years.” (“要是您说的是认真的,”年轻人说,“我就跟您赌,但我要待的不是五年,而是十五年。”)”和最后一段中“To prove to you in action how I despise (鄙视) all that you live by, I waive (宣布放弃) the two millions, which I once dreamed of as paradise and which now I despise.(为了用行动向您证明,我多么鄙视您所追求的一切,我宣布放弃那两百万——曾经我把它视作天堂,如今却对它嗤之以鼻。)” 故选A。
根据第十段“For the first year of his imprisonment, the prisoner suffered severely from loneliness and depression. At one time he was busy with the natural sciences, then he would ask for Byron or Shakespeare.(在他被囚禁的第一年,这位囚犯深受孤独和抑郁之苦。
根据最后一段中“Tomorrow at twelve o’clock I’ll regain my freedom. For fifteen years I have diligently studied earthly life. Your books gave me wisdom. To prove to you in action how I despise (鄙视) all that you live by, I waive (宣布放弃) the two millions, which I once dreamed of as paradise and which now I despise.(明天十二点,我就能重获自由。十五年来,我孜孜不倦地研究着尘世生活。您给的那些书让我获得了智慧。为了用行动向您证明,我多么鄙视您所追求的一切,我宣布放弃那两百万——曾经我把它视作天堂,如今却对它嗤之以鼻。)”可知,律师最终放弃那两百万是因为他认为头脑中的智慧比手中的金钱更好。故选C。
【45题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据第六段““If you mean it seriously,” said the young man, “I’ll take the bet, but I would stay not five but fifteen years.” (“要是您说的是认真的,”年轻人说,“我就跟您赌,但我要待的不是五年,而是十五年。”)” 、第七段“Fifteen? Done” cried the banker, “Gentlemen, I stake (下注) two millions!”(“十五年?一言为定!”银行家喊道,“先生们,我下注两百万!”)”可知,文章主要讲述了银行家与年轻律师之间的一场荒谬打赌,及律师十五年囚禁生活与最终放弃巨额奖金的故事。因此B项“The bet(打赌)”最适合用作文章标题。故选B。

In a groundbreaking new study, researchers have discovered bottled water sold in stores can contain 10 to 100 times more bits of plastic than previously estimated — nanoplastics (纳米塑料) are so tiny that they cannot be seen under a microscope.
At 1,000th the average width of a human hair, nanoplastics are so tiny they can migrate through the tissues of the digestive tract (消化道) or lungs into the bloodstream, distributing potentially harmful artificial chemicals throughout the body and into cells, experts say.
One liter of water — equal to two standard-size bottled waters — contained an average of 240,000 plastic particles (粒子) from seven types of plastics, of which 90% were identified as nanoplastics and the rest were microplastics, according to the new study.
Microplastics are polymer fragments that can range from less than 0.2 inch (5millimeters) down to l/25,000th of an inch (1 micrometer). Anything smaller is a nanoplastic that must be measured in billionths of a meter.
In the new study, published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers from Columbia University presented a new technology that can see, count and analyze the chemical structure of nanoparticles in bottled water.
Instead of 300 per liter, the team behind the latest study found the actual number of plastic bits in three popular brands of water sold in the United States to be in between 110,000 and 370,000, if not higher.
“The innovative new techniques presented in the study open the door for further research to better understand the potential risks to human health.” said Jane Houlihan, research director for Healthy Babies, Bright Futures — nonprofits committed to reducing babies’ exposures to neurotoxic (毒害神经的) chemicals, who was not involved in the study.
“Infants and young children may face the greatest risks, as their developing brains and bodies are often more vulnerable to impacts from toxic exposures.” said Houlihan in an email.
Nanoplastics are the most worrisome type of plastic pollution for human health, experts say. That’s because the particles can invade individual cells and tissues in major organs, potentially interrupting cellular processes and depositing harmful chemicals such as bisphenols, phthalates, PFAS, and heavy metals.
There are things people can do to reduce their exposure to plastics, said Houlihan. “We can avoid consuming foods and drinks in plastic containers. We can wear clothing made from natural fabrics and buy consumer products made from natural materials,” Houlihan said. “We can simply assess the plastic in our daily lives and find alternatives whenever possible.”
46. Where can nanoplastics be found in our body?
A. The blood. B. The lung. C. The stomach. D. Almost everywhere.
47. What are the differences between nanoplastics and microplastics?
A. Nanoplastics are harmful, while microplastics aren’t.
B. Nanoplastics exist in bottled waters, while microplastics don’t.
C. Nanoplastics can migrate through certain tissues, while microplastics can’t.
D. Nanoplastics are relatively smaller, while microplastics are much bigger.
48. Why is Jane Houlihan’s statement mentioned in paragraph 7?
A. To add more background information for the new study.
B. To make preparations for the following contents.
C. To provide an objective evaluation of the new study.
D. To encourage readers to focus on the new study.
49. What is the meaning of the underlined word “vulnerable” the passage?
A. Fragile. B. Optimistic. C. Emotional. D. Ignorant.
50. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The discovery of nanoplastics in bottled water. B. The health risks of nanoplastics in bottled water.
C. The impact of nanoplastics on human health. D. The importance of reducing plastic use.
46. D 47. D 48. C 49. A 50. A
根据第二段中“At 1,000th the average width of a human hair, nanoplastics are so tiny they can migrate through the tissues of the digestive tract (消化道) or lungs into the bloodstream, distributing potentially harmful artificial chemicals throughout the body and into cells, experts say. (专家表示,纳米塑料的大小只有人类头发平均宽度的千分之一,非常微小,它们可以通过消化道或肺部的组织迁移到血液中,并将潜在有害的人造化学物质分布到全身和细胞中)”可知,纳米塑料能迁移到血液中,还能将有害物质分布到全身和细胞中,意味着在身体几乎各处都可能发现纳米塑料。故选D项。
【47题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Microplastics are polymer fragments that can range from less than 0.2 inch (5 millimeters) down to l/25,000th of an inch (1 micrometer). Anything smaller is a nanoplastic that must be measured in billionths of a meter. (微塑料是聚合物碎片,其大小范围可以从小于0.2英寸(5毫米)到0.25万分之一英寸(1微米)。任何更小的就是纳米塑料,必须以十亿分之一米为单位来测量)”可知,纳米塑料相对更小,微塑料相对更大。故选D项。
【48题详解】
推理判断题。根据第七段中“The innovative new techniques presented in the study open the door for further research to better understand the potential risks to human health. (这项研究中提出的创新新技术为进一步研究打开了大门,以便更好地了解对人类健康的潜在风险)”可知,引用Jane Houlihan的话是为了客观评价新技术的意义。故选C项。
【49题详解】
词句猜测题。根据结合常识以及划线词所在句“Infants and young children may face the greatest risks, as their developing brains and bodies are often more vulnerable to impacts from toxic exposures. (婴儿和幼儿可能面临最大的风险,因为他们正在发育的大脑和身体通常更vulnerable,容易受到有毒物质暴露的影响)”中“young children may face the greatest risks”和“their developing brains and bodies”可推知,由于婴儿和幼儿正在发育,他们的大脑和身体更“脆弱”,所以容易受到有毒物质的影响,面临最大的风险。故划线词vulnerable意为“脆弱的”,与A项“Fragile”意思相近。故选A项。
通读全文,结合第一段中“In a groundbreaking new study, researchers have discovered bottled water sold in stores can contain 10 to 100 times more bits of plastic than previously estimated — nanoplastics (纳米塑料) are so tiny that they cannot be seen under a microscope. (在一项具有开创性的新研究中,研究人员发现商店售卖的瓶装水中含有的塑料颗粒比之前预估的多10到100倍——纳米塑料非常微小,在显微镜下都看不见)”和第六段“Instead of 300 per liter, the team behind the latest study found the actual number of plastic bits in three popular brands of water sold in the United States to be in between 110,000 and 370,000, if not higher.(最新研究背后的团队发现,在美国销售的三种流行品牌的水中,塑料碎片的实际数量在11万到37万之间,而不是每升300个)”可知,本文主要围绕在瓶装水中发现纳米塑料这一研究发现展开。故选A项。
D
Happiness is not natural. It is purely an idea created by human. A state of contentment (let alone happiness) is discouraged by our genetic design because it would lower our guard against possible threats to our survival.
Chasing happiness is like chasing an elusive (难以捉摸的) ghost. The positive thinking industry, however, claims to know its secrets. Self-help was popularized by Norman Vincent Peale, an American pastor (牧师). He invented “positive thinking”, a concept now deeply embedded in our culture and steadily growing in influence. The global personal development industry was valued at $38. 28 billion in 2019 and is expected to keep growing at a rate of 5.1 percent.
Popular films and books are full of supposedly inspirational statements which suggest all you need to do is believe in yourself and then you will be able to achieve anything in life. This is simply, and obviously, not true. I don’t think there is a need to explain that many obstacles and misfortunes in life are inevitable or unmanageable. Our ancestors knew this. Many philosophical and religious traditions are based on the acceptance that being alive is a very challenging task, which comes with significant amounts of suffering. It goes without saying that we should do all that we can to maximize our sense of well-being and minimize our suffering, but the end result can’t be a state of sustained bliss (极乐). We are not designed that way.
The self-help genre (类型) is not a homogeneous (同种类的) beast, however. It is, in fact, ironic how self-help books on happiness and those on how to “make it big” are put together on the same bookshelf, given that many of the former tell us that caring too much about success and fame is the main obstacle to happiness.
The inevitable clash between mandatory (强制的)optimism and the realities of our existence comes with a heavy psychological price. It could be argued that positive psychology blames those who are suffering for their suffering, as it is based on the false idea that unhappiness is entirely avoidable. It follows therefore that an unhappy person must be inadequate and incompetent. Positive psychology encourages people who are struggling with a particular goal to persevere in the face of unfavourable odds. This is much more punishing psychologically in the long run than accepting failure.
I believe that coming to terms with life as it is, and not as the happiness industry tells us it could be, will make us feel happier and more at peace with ourselves and with the world. Unfortunately, the devil always has the best tunes.
51. What is author’s main purpose in writing the first three paragraphs?
A. To analyze how personal development industry works.
B. To explain how unrealistic it is to pursue happiness in life.
C. To contrast modern people’s view of life with our ancestors’.
D. To review how the concept of happiness has changed over years.
52. The word “this” in Paragraph 3 (“Our ancestors knew this”) refers to which of the following?
A. The positive thinking industry’s secrets to happiness are unreliable.
B. Many life obstacles and misfortunes are unavoidable or unmanageable.
C. Philosophical traditions emphasize the challenges of being alive.
D. Sustained bliss is impossible due to human genetic design.
53. It seems ironic to the author that putting self-help books on happiness and those on how to “make it big” together because _______.
A. readers fail to notice they belong to distinct subgenres with unrelated content themes
B. the former advocates letting go of ambition; the latter urges aggressive success pursuit
C. readers rarely recognize the conflicting values these two types of books promote
D. one focuses on inner contentment and the other on external achievement, with little overlap
54. According to the article, which of the following quotes would the author most strongly disagree with?
A. Happiness is a choice, and so is suffering.
B. Happiness is ideal. It is the work of the imagination.
C. Happiness is a by-product. You cannot pursue it by itself.
D. The search for happiness is one of the chief sources of unhappiness.
55. What does the underlined sentence “the devil always has the best tunes” mean?
A. The core idea of the happiness industry is a beautiful lie.
B. The happiness industry has negative effects on the society.
C. Suffering contributes more to a meaningful life than happiness.
D. The one-sided interpretation of life proved more attractive to the public.
B 52. B 53. B 54. A 55. D
根据第一段中的“Happiness is not natural. It is purely an idea created by human. A state of contentment (let alone happiness) is discouraged by our genetic design because it would lower our guard against possible threats to our survival. (幸福并非天生,它纯粹是人类创造的一种观念。我们的基因构造不支持满足的状态(更不用说幸福了),因为这会降低我们对生存可能面临的威胁的警惕。)”、第二段中的“Chasing happiness is like chasing an elusive (难以捉摸的) ghost. (追逐幸福就像追逐一个难以捉摸的幽灵。)”和第三段中的“Popular films and books are full of supposedly inspirational statements which suggest all you need to do is believe in yourself and then you will be able to achieve anything in life. This is simply, and obviously, not true. (热门电影和书籍中充斥着所谓的励志言论,声称你只需相信自己,就能在生活中实现任何目标。显然,这是完全不正确的。)”可知,前三段主要是为了说明在生活中追求幸福是不切实际的。故选B项。
【52题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“I don’t think there is a need to explain that many obstacles and misfortunes in life are inevitable or unmanageable. Our ancestors knew this. (我认为无需解释,生活中的许多障碍和不幸是不可避免或难以应对的。我们的祖先早就知道这一点。)”可知,“this”指代前文提到的“生活中的许多障碍和不幸是不可避免或难以应对的”这一内容。故选B项。
【53题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“It is, in fact, ironic how self-help books on happiness and those on how to “make it big” are put together on the same bookshelf, given that many of the former tell us that caring too much about success and fame is the main obstacle to happiness. (事实上,将关于幸福的自助书籍和关于如何“大获成功”的自助书籍放在同一个书架上,是很讽刺的事情,因为前者中的许多书籍告诉我们,过于在意成功和名声是获得幸福的主要障碍。)”可知,关于幸福的自助书籍主张放下对成功名声的执念,而关于“大获成功”的书籍则鼓励追求成功,二者观点相悖,所以作者觉得将它们放在一起很讽刺。故选B项。
【54题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中的“It could be argued that positive psychology blames those who are suffering for their suffering, as it is based on the false idea that unhappiness is entirely avoidable. (可以说,积极心理学将痛苦归咎于正在遭受痛苦的人,因为它基于一个错误的观点,即不幸福是完全可以避免的。)”可知,作者认为不幸福并非完全能避免,而A选项“幸福是一种选择,痛苦也是”表明痛苦是可以选择避免的,与作者观点相悖,所以作者最不认同该说法。故选A项。
根据最后一段中的“I believe that coming to terms with life as it is, and not as the happiness industry tells us it could be, will make us feel happier and more at peace with ourselves and with the world. Unfortunately, the devil always has the best tunes.
When I was in school, the class I dreaded most was my eighth grade art class. The teacher put down my every attempt at completing an assignment. I simply couldn’t produce art the way she wanted it. Luckily, I’d already proven myself in other creative areas. Yet, that art teacher was successful in convincing me that I had no talent for painting, drawing, or anything related to them. Imagine my surprise when I published my nature photography and became a volunteer art teacher
Unfortunately, my story is all too familiar to many people who come through my workshops and practice. Even more unfortunately, the vast majority of people were so discouraged in childhood that they cut off the creative impulse (冲动) in most areas of their lives. Their teachers, parents, or classmates convinced them they had no talent, so they gave up. The pain of failure was simply too great.
Why have we forgotten creativity is an experience, not a result? Let’s consider why we express creativity in first place. To be creative is to be human. Everything we’ve at our disposal is the result of someone’s creative expression and willingness to take a risk. Even so, for creativity to flower and feel free of encumbrance (累赘), it needs to be about the joyful moments spent creating, not just about what we’ve to show for those moments. Whatever pattern you need to break, try to make it about the pleasure and not about the outcome.
Therefore, I’d urge you to curb your perfectionism not enthusiasm! Perfectionism is the leading killer of artistic expression. Relax a little and bring back your childlike nature when you create. Children instinctively (本能地) know how to give over to the joy — until someone teaches them otherwise. Let your creation be whatever it wants to be. See if it can lead you rather than the other way around. Let your unconsciousness come through, and let the expression of yourself be beautiful regardless of how it compares to anything else. After all, it’s yours, and no one but you could create it
56 What caused the author to temporarily think he lacked artistic talent in his eighth-grade art class? (no more than 15 words)
____________________________________________________
57. What does the third paragraph mainly tell us? (no more than 10 words)
____________________________________________________
58. Please explain the underlined word "curb" in English. (no more than 5 words)
____________________________________________________
59. According to passage, how should people create to avoid being affected by perfectionism? (no more than 10 words)
____________________________________________________
60. Have you ever come up with creative things just for fun, like little ideas or playful works? Share one quick example. (no more than 25 words)
____________________________________________________
56. His teacher discouraged him and said he had no talent for art. Or: His teacher convinced him that he had no talent for art.
57. Creativity is an experience, not a result. Or: We should enjoy being creative.
58. Limit./Control./Hold./Keep...within limits./Keep...under control.
59. Focus on pleasure, not outcome.
60. Open. Yes, perhaps I am. I used to draw a lot of imaginative pictures in childhood. Or: Yes, I often make some interesting handmade things by myself.
根据第一段“When I was in school, the class I dreaded most was my eighth grade art class. The teacher put down my every attempt at completing an assignment. I simply couldn’t produce art the way she wanted it. Luckily, I’d already proven myself in other creative areas. Yet, that art teacher was successful in convincing me that I had no talent for painting, drawing, or anything related to them. (上学时,我最害怕的课是八年级的美术课。老师否定我完成作业的每一次尝试,我就是无法按照她想要的方式创作艺术。幸运的是,我已在其他创意领域证明了自己。然而,那位美术老师成功让我相信,我在绘画或任何与之相关的领域都没有天赋。)”可知,是八年级美术老师的否定以及让作者相信自己无艺术天赋,导致作者暂时认为自己缺乏艺术天赋。故答案为His teacher discouraged him and said he had no talent for art. Or: His teacher convinced him that he had no talent for art.
根据第三段“Why have we forgotten creativity is an experience, not a result? Let’s consider why we express creativity in first place. To be creative is to be human. Everything we’ve at our disposal is the result of someone’s creative expression and willingness to take a risk. Even so, for creativity to flower and feel free of encumbrance (累赘), it needs to be about the joyful moments spent creating, not just about what we’ve to show for those moments. Whatever pattern you need to break, try to make it about the pleasure and not about the outcome. Creativity is an experience, not a result. Or: We should enjoy being creative.
根据第四段“Therefore, I’d urge you to curb your perfectionism not enthusiasm! Perfectionism is the leading killer of artistic expression. Relax a little and bring back your childlike nature when you create. (因此,我劝你 完美主义,而非热情!完美主义是艺术表达的主要杀手。创作时放松一点,找回童心。)”可知,因为完美主义会扼杀艺术表达,所以作者建议“控制、抑制”完美主义,“curb”意为“抑制、控制”。故答案为Limit./Control./Hold./Keep...within limits./Keep...under control.
根据第三段“Whatever pattern you need to break, try to make it about the pleasure and not about the outcome. (无论你需要打破何种模式,都要让创作关乎快乐而非结果。)”以及第四段“Therefore, I’d urge you to curb your perfectionism not enthusiasm! Perfectionism is the leading killer of artistic expression. (因此,我建议你抑制完美主义,而非热情!完美主义是艺术表达的首要扼杀者。)”可知,人们应专注于快乐而非结果,以避免受完美主义影响。故答案为Focus on pleasure, not outcome.
Open. Yes, perhaps I am. I used to draw a lot of imaginative pictures in childhood. Or: Yes, I often make some interesting handmade things by myself.

Yours,
Li Hua
One possible version:
Dear Jasper,
Hope you’re doing well! Thank you so much for your interest in my presentation on biodiversity — it really means a lot to me!
During my research, I faced several challenges. Collecting reliable field data was tough because many species in our local area are hard to observe. Also, I lacked some key knowledge in ecology, which made analysis difficult at first.
To overcome these issues, I consulted our biology teacher for guidance and borrowed textbooks to fill the knowledge gaps. I also teamed up with classmates to conduct weekend surveys in nearby parks, which greatly improved our data quality. Most importantly, I stayed patient and kept revising my methods.
Now I see challenges as part of the learning process!
Yours,
Li Hua

Fire Prevention Information
The University of Adelaide employs a full-time staff of fire prevention professionals. They inspect all campus buildings and test and maintain all sprinkler(喷水灭火装置)systems fire alarms and fire extinguishers(灭火器). They also provide educational programs for fire safety in the residence hall. Whenever you move to a new area, you should locate the fire alarm pull stations and the two exits nearest your room.
Fire Alarms
The floors of all campus buildings are equipped with manual fire alarm systems which include fire alarm pull stations and pipes. Most are also equipped with automatic fire alarm systems consisting of heat detectors, smoke detectors and sprinklers. For your safety, never tamper with(胡乱摆弄)these systems. False fire alarms are illegal and may lead to imprisonment:
Fire Drills
A fire drill will be conducted in your residence hall every semester. During a fire drill, please do the following:
·Take your room key and ID, close and lock the door to your room.
·Exit immediately from the nearest emergency exit; do not use a lift.
·Fire Extinguishers
Meet outside of your residence hall and wait for further instructions.
Fire extinguishers are located on each floor and in each apartment. Use a fire extinguisher only if you have been trained to do so. Irresponsible use of a fire extinguisher can create a dangerous situation for other residents and could result in damage to personal property.
Misuse of a fire extinguisher will result in fines.
Smoke detector
A smoke detector is on the ceiling in your room. Some buildings also have heat detectors on the ceilings. Do the following to ensure the safe operation of your smoke detector:
·If your smoke detector is working properly, the red light should be on. If the red light is not blinking, contact residence hall staff immediately.
·Do not cover or block your smoke detector in any way.

B
For the first year of his imprisonment the prisoner suffered severely from loneliness and depression.
40 Why was the old banker walking up and down his study at a dark autumn night?
A. He could scarcely contain his impatience to come face-to-face with the lawyer.
B. He was overcome with intense excitement regarding the result of the bet.
C. He feared that he might suffer substantial monetary losses on account of the bet.

A. You bet your millions and I bet my faith
B. You stake your millions and I stake my life
C You bet your millions and I bet my career

A. A good name is easier lost than won.
B. Money spent on the brain is never spent in vain.
C. Wisdom in the mind is better than money in the hand.
D. What we acquire without sweat we give away without regret.
45. What can serve as the best title of the passage?
A. The death penalty B. The bet C. The lawyer D. The banker

C. The impact of nanoplastics on human health. D. The importance of reducing plastic use.
