My story starts like so many writers’: making stories as soon as I could hold a pencil. By seven, I was making up “novels” weekly and forcing them upon my long-suffering aunts. While other kids dreamed of being astronauts, I hesitated between “author” and “veterinarian”.
Then, at fifteen, I saw the first Lord of the Rings film in the cinema. It struck me like lightning. When I discovered it was adapted from a book and that entire worlds could be built with words, my path was set — to be a writer in the future. I immediately dug out my glitter gel pens and got back to writing.
But growing up meant growing doubtful. “Be practical,” everyone said. So I became the cliche: the writer who studied psychology (心理学) instead. Academic work in university took over every minute of my life, leaving my stories untouched and coated in dust.
After graduation, the floodgates opened. Characters flooded back, whispering I forgot how much I needed that. Over a period of time, I wrote crazily until my new job got even busier and my personal life broke down. Then I found myself pulling boxes of half-finished works into my childhood bedroom at twenty-six. This time, the fall was severe. That slump went on for years.
Then came the babies. When I held my first child in my arms, tired for lack of sleep and aching all over, I got up the courage to ask myself. “Why haven’t I become a writer yet?” How absurd (荒唐的) that was! Here I was, busy changing diapers (尿布), yet the old hunger rushed back louder than the baby. So I fought for it — writing down outlines with a purple pen while feeding babies, reading books during naptimes, stealing twenty bleary-eyed minutes at midnight. I kept going.
Now, I’m more tired than ever. More frightened too. But the words are here to stay. It turns out that my greatest mistake wasn’t in stopping writing, but in believing I could ever stop writing.
4. What made the author decide to become a writer?
A. Her interest in novels. B. A film.
C. Her curiosity about surroundings D. A habit.
5. Why did the author stop writing during university?
A. She preferred psychology to writing.
B. Her classmates doubted her ability
C. She was too busy with studies to write.
D. She found she wanted to be an astronaut.
6. What does the underlined word “slump” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. A period of great productivity. B. A time of strong determination.
C. A state of inactivity in performance. D. A sudden increase in creative energy.
7. What can we learn from the author’s experience?
A. Never give up on your true passion.
B. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
C. A good book can change people’s lives unexpectedly.
D. It is possible to balance writing with life responsibilities.
C
An ice bath or cold plunge typically involves putting yourself into very cold water. Ancient Egyptians and Hippocrates all praised the benefits of cold water in helping keep healthy. “This has been around for a really long time,” says Dr. Georgine Nanos, a family physician.
“But research shows that the effectiveness of ice baths depends on their intended purpose. Especially for starters, moderation (适度) is key,” Nanos says. “Getting colder is possible, but you need to be extra careful. Cold plunges aren’t for everyone, especially those with some possible diseases.”
From a scientific standpoint, cold water exposure (接触) brings about a series of changes in the body. It can help you stay more awake. What’s more, cold water makes your body create heat. This temporarily raises your metabolism (新陈代谢),which some believe could help lose weight. That’s the scientific idea, but the evidence for that should be explored more,” Nanos explains.
So, how do those physiological changes actually help us? Healthcare providers and experts have mostly depended on small clinical studies or observational data to support the potential health benefits of cold-water immersion (浸泡). But now, experts are doing more well-rounded reviews of all the research to learn more about this popular practice. Even so, everyone agrees we need more studies to understand its effects fully.
A 2025 review found no immediate reduction in stress following an ice bath. However, there were improvements in sleep quality and overall quality of life, although no significant changes in mood were observed. A 2023 review found that an ice plunge can help reduce muscle soreness and tiredness immediately after exercise. And they also found that time in freezing water could reduce so-called explosive performance — such as the ability to jump high — immediately after getting out of cold water.
So, the bottom line: if you enjoy an ice bath and experience benefits, go for it. “And if it makes you feel awful, stop,” Ethan Smith, another physician, advises. “However, if the cold water calls to you, dive in.”
8. Why are ancient Egyptians and Hippocrates mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To show cold water has long been used for health.
B. To argue ice baths were more widely used in ancient times.
C. To prove ice baths are the most effective way to treat diseases.
D. To compare their views on cold water with modern scientific research.
9. What does Nanos consider important for beginners of ice baths?
A. Avoiding the coldest water at first.
B. Keeping the practice reasonable.
C. Turning to healthcare providers for help.
D. Doing ice baths every day to develop a habit.
10. What is one possible influence of cold-water exposure according to some people?
A. It cures certain diseases. B. It slows one’s blood flow.
C. It helps people slim down. D. It improves one’s ability to jump high.
11. What is Ethan’s suggestion regarding ice baths?
A. They should be taken on a regular basis.
B. They are only suitable for those who have no health problems.
C. Everyone should try them at least once to experience benefits.
D. One should decide whether to do them based on their own feelings.

A team at the United Kingdom’s Loughborough University recently made what is literally the world’s smallest violin. At only 35 micrometers long and 13 micrometers wide, the “instrument” is thinner than a human hair.
Don’t expect to hear any small music, however. In this case, engineers designed a nanoscale (纳米级) image of a violin instead of a playable instrument. Regardless, the milestone wasn’t intended as a trick — it’s helping experts push the limits when it comes to future electronics and computer chips (芯片).
For decades, electronics designers and producers have consistently reduced the size of projects while meantime improving performance standards. Computer chips have doubled their capacity (容量) around every 1.5 to 2 years, in keeping with a theory known as Moore’s Law, which largely holds up even after 60 years. But at a certain point in the not-too-distant future, producers will simply run out of physical, upgradable space for data, which is where quantum (量子) computing may come into play.
Until then, researchers must turn to increasingly advanced techniques to design nanoscopic electronics. One such approach is nanolithography (纳米光刻技术) — and Loughborough University’s Physics department recently bought a new system designed for just such tasks.
“Our nanolithography system allows us to design experiments that explore materials in different ways — using light, magnetism, or electricity — and observe their responses,” experimental physics professor Kelly Morrison said. “Once we understand how materials behave, we can start applying that knowledge to develop new technologies, whether it’s improving computing efficiency or finding new ways to get energy.”
With their test project completed, researchers have already moved on to more advanced investigations. One current project involves developing replacements for magnetic data storage methods, while another is examining how heat may help design faster, more efficient storage and processing capabilities.
“Though creating the world’s smallest violin may seem like fun and games, a lot of what we’ve learned in the process has actually laid the groundwork for the research we’re now undertaking,” said Morrison. “But first, we need to understand the fundamental science and this system enables us to do just that.”
12. What is the engineers’ purpose in making the nanoscale violin?
A. To make real music. B. To test a new theory.
C. To advance electronics. D. To break a world record.
13. What can we know about nanolithography from the text?
A. It contributes to making computer chips safe.
B. It aims to make playable nanoscale instruments.
C. It helps researchers to learn more about materials.
D. It is first developed by Loughborough for quantum computing.
14. What is Professor Morrison’s attitude towards the research?
A. Positive. B. Unclear. C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Moore’s Law and its application. B. The development of quantum computing.
C. The advantages of the world’s smallest violin. D. The research on nanoscopic electronics and its future.

Influencers say sprinting (快跑) is the best way to burn fat. It sounds easy in theory — just run fast!____16____ You shouldn’t just get up from the seat and right away start a super intense sprint training plan. So how can you add sprinting to your regular workouts safely?
Start with a strong fitness base. If you’re not there yet, walking may be a better entry point. Then, ideally with guidance from a trainer, you can work sprint intervals (间隔) into your routine. Experts recommend starting with twice a week and no more than three.____17____
____18____ You could go for a 5-to 10-minute walk to raise your core temperature and get your muscles warmed up. Then add active movements, such as leg swings, or high knees. Other exercise, like plyometric drills, can also help prepare your muscles.
The footwear and surface also have to be suitable.____19____Treadmills (跑步机) work too—if they aren’t too hard.
People with some body injuries should avoid sprinting. Instead, choose to get similar benefits from performing sprint-style intervals on a bike or in the pool.
Finally, don’t treat sprinting as a one-size-fits-all solution.____20____Make sure that you’re covering all training zones, including weight training and high intensity. If you start ignoring pieces, you run the risk of becoming imbalanced and then opening up the door for injury.
A. But it’s harder than it looks.
B. Your body likes variation to adapt.
C. Sprinting is only suitable for young people.
D. Sprinting should be done daily for best results.
E. Otherwise, you may overdo it and wear your body out.
F. A sports field and a good pair of trainers can reduce impact.
G. Warming up is a necessity for something as intense as sprints.

As Mary’s eighteenth birthday drew near, she thought about how to mark the occasion. Several friends were also celebrating their important birthdays. One friend planned a trip on a large ship around southern Europe. Another decided to spend her holiday in Hawaii. A third was researching an expensive health center in Arizona.
None of these choices interested Mary. She felt like the girl in the fairy tale who couldn’t find the perfect bowl of food. That friend who chose the ship trip gave good advice, “Keep your eyes open. When the right thing appears, you’ll recognize it.”
That night, while cleaning out her email inbox, Mary saw a message about a “vision quest” — a week-long trip into wild nature. Normally she would delete (删除) such an email at once, but she recalled her friend’s words. She read more carefully. The idea of spending time alone outdoors felt right.
There was one trip that was planned just before her birthday — during a rare free period in her busy school schedule. It seemed meant to be. However, some details worried her: sleeping outside in the Mojave Desert alone and going without food for two days. But she decided not to think about these things too much.
Mary’s father could hardly believe it when she shared her plan. “Sleeping outside for a week in Death Valley? That name isn’t for show, you know. Have you ever even camped? You’ve never backpacked in the mountains. And what about dangerous insects and snakes?” he pressed. After a few minutes of silence, Mary said,” Dad, the trip is led by experienced guides and they have organized such trips many times. It will be safe. Importantly, I want to have a try. “Seeing her determination, Mary’s father softened, “Be careful. Tell me whatever you need — I’m with you.”
注意:1.写作词数应为150个词左右;
Once preparations were made, Mary set out excitedly.

B 5. C 6. C 7. A
根据第二段中的“Then, at fifteen, I saw the first Lord of the Rings film in the cinema. It struck me like lightning. When I discovered it was adapted from a book and that entire worlds could be built with words, my path was set — to be a writer in the future. (然后,15岁时,我在电影院看了第一部《指环王》电影。它像闪电一样击中了我。当我发现它改编自一本书,并且文字可以构建出完整的世界时,我的人生道路就确定了——将来要成为一名作家。)”可知,一部电影让作者下定决心成为一名作家。故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Academic work in university took over every minute of my life, leaving my stories untouched and coated in dust. (大学的学术任务占据了我生活的每一分钟,我的那些故事被束之高阁,落满灰尘。)”可知,作者在大学期间停止写作是因为学业太忙,没有时间写。故选C项。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中的“Over a period of time, I wrote crazily until my new job got even busier and my personal life broke down. Then I found myself pulling boxes of half-finished works into my childhood bedroom at twenty-six. This time, the fall was severe. That slump went on for years. (一段时间里,我疯狂写作,直到新工作变得更忙,个人生活也陷入困境。然后,26岁时,我发现自己把一箱箱未完成的作品搬回了儿时的卧室。这一次,我跌得很惨。这种slump持续了好几年。)”可知,作者因工作和生活问题再次停止写作,未完成的作品被搁置,这种“低迷状态”持续多年。由此可推测,“slump”指“(写作等方面的)低迷期、停滞状态”,与“a state of inactivity in performance”(表现停滞的状态)意思相近。
根据最后一段“Now, I’m more tired than ever. More frightened too. But the words are here to stay. It turns out that my greatest mistake wasn’t in stopping writing, but in believing I could ever stop writing. 故选A项。

A 9. B 10. C 11. D

C 13. C 14. A 15. D

上文提到“Influencers say sprinting (快跑) is the best way to burn fat. It sounds easy in theory — just run fast! (网红们说,快跑是燃烧脂肪的最佳方式。理论上听起来很简单——只要跑得快就行!)”快跑理论上听起来很简单——只要跑得快就行,下文“You shouldn’t just get up from the seat and right away start a super intense sprint training plan. (你不应该只是从座位上站起来,就立刻开始一个超级高强度的快跑训练计划。)”则提醒“你不该刚从座位上起来,就立刻开始高强度的快跑训练计划”。由此可见,上下文存在 “理论简单”与“实际操作需谨慎”的转折关系。A项“But it’s harder than it looks. (但它比看起来难多了。)”既承接了前文“听起来简单”的表述,又通过转折引出后文“不能贸然开始”的建议,逻辑连贯,符合语境。故选A。
上文“Then, ideally with guidance from a trainer, you can work sprint intervals (间隔) into your routine. Experts recommend starting with twice a week and no more than three. (然后,理想情况下,在教练的指导下,你可以将间歇训练纳入你的日常锻炼中。专家建议从每周从两次开始,且不要超过三次。)”指出专家的建议,这是对快跑训练频率的合理限制,核心目的是避免过度锻炼。E项“Otherwise, you may overdo it and wear your body out. (否则,你可能会运动过量,让身体疲惫不堪。)”说明了每周短跑次数不宜过多的原因,且E项中的“Otherwise(否则)”恰好对应前文的“建议频率”,解释了不遵循该建议可能导致的后果,进一步强调了控制频率的重要性,与上文衔接紧密。故选E。
【18题详解】
下文“You could go for a 5-to 10-minute walk to raise your core temperature and get your muscles warmed up. (你可以先步行5到10分钟,以提高核心体温并热身肌肉。)”详细介绍了热身的具体方式,可见该段核心话题是 “快跑前的热身”。G项 “Warming up is a necessity for something as intense as sprints. (对于快跑这样高强度的运动,热身是必要的。)”直接点明 “热身” 这一主题,且G项中的“Warming up”和下文中的“get your muscles warmed up”相呼应,且“必要性” 的表述为后文具体热身方法的介绍做了铺垫,可作为该段的总起句,符合语境。故选G。
【19题详解】
上文“The footwear and surface also have to be suitable. (鞋类和地面也必须合适。)”说明鞋子和地面也必须合适,空处应说明合适的鞋子和地面对短跑的影响。F项A sports field and a good pair of trainers can reduce impact.
上文提到“Finally, don’t treat sprinting as a one-size-fits-all solution. (最后,不要将短跑训练视为一种一刀切的解决方案。)”不要把快跑当作万能解决方案,下文“Make sure that you’re covering all training zones, including weight training and high intensity. If you start ignoring pieces, you run the risk of becoming imbalanced and then opening up the door for injury. (确保你涵盖了所有训练区域,包括力量训练和高强度训练。如果你开始忽略某些部分,就有可能造成训练失衡,从而增加受伤的风险。)”则建议确保涵盖所有训练类型,包括力量训练和高强度训练,否则可能导致锻炼不均衡并增加受伤风险。这表明文章强调锻炼需“多样化”,而非单一依赖快跑。B项“Your body likes variation to adapt. (你的身体需要多样化来适应。)”解释了“不能单一依赖快跑”的原因——身体需要通过多种训练适应,从而自然引出后文“涵盖多种训练类型” 的建议,逻辑通顺,符合语境。故选B。
第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分)

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1.写作词数应为150个词左右;
Once preparations were made, Mary set out excitedly.

When Mary finally got home on her birthday, her father pulled her into a hug.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Once preparations were made, Mary set out excitedly. The vastness and silence of the Mojave Desert overwhelmed her at first. Under the scorching sun, every step felt heavy, and the initial thrill gave way to fatigue and thirst during the two-day fasting period. Doubts crept in – was this a mistake? Yet, remembering her purpose, she pushed through. Guided by experienced leaders, she learned to observe the subtle beauty: resilient desert flowers, unique rock formations, and the breathtaking expanse of stars at night. The solitude forced deep self-reflection, challenging her limits and bringing a surprising sense of peace she hadn’t expected.
When Mary finally got home on her birthday, her father pulled her into a hug.“Welcome back! I’ve been so worried,” he said, relief clear in his voice. Pulling back, he examined her face – tired, sun-kissed, but radiating a quiet strength. “So? Was it… as bad as I thought?” Mary smiled, her eyes brighter. “It was tough, Dad, tougher than I imagined. But it was also amazing. I saw things I’ll never forget. I proved to myself I could do it.” Seeing her newfound confidence and the genuine joy in her expression, her father finally understood that her unique vision quest had gifted her something far more valuable than a cruise or a spa stay: a deep sense of accomplishment and inner refreshment.
