Organized in a chronological order, the second to fourth paragraphs further depicts his life story. The fifth highlights his appearance and personality as an ordinary person. And the last paragraph expresses the author’s respect and admiration for Einstein. In addition to adopting rhetorical devices such as metaphor and simile, the author also uses specific examples to demonstrate the admirable qualities of Einstein, touching the readers a lot.
学情分析
The students are in their second year of senior high school. They are relatively active and passionate about English class. They’ve already learned some basic vocabulary about introducing a person and some reading strategies like skimming and scanning. They’ve also known about the writing type of biography and got some experience of reading texts about people of achievement. Furthermore, they’ve grasped some writing skills.
But they are in urgent need of mastering the logical organization of a biography and methods of portraying a person’s images and personalities through concrete examples, while hoping to learn how to use appropriate language for description and practical techniques in writing.

教学过程
Step 1: Lead-in (2 mins)
Find the missing pieces
The teacher asks students to guess who the scientist is and find the missing pieces of the puzzle of Albert Einstein based on what they know.
Step 2: Pre-writing (19 mins) (Activity1-4)
Activity 1: Read for the genre
The teacher leads the students to identify the genre of the text by making a multiple-choice question:
What type of writing is the text?
A. A piece of news.
B. A popular science article.
C. An introduction to a place.
D. A biography of a person.
Activity 2: Read for structure and timeline
1. The teacher guides students to skim the passage for 2 minutes, underline some key words and sentences, and match the main idea of each paragraph. After that, the teacher directs students to conclude the structure of the biography, which includes three main parts: Introduction, body and conclusion.
2. While skimming, the teacher leads students to circle the time expressions and complete the timeline.
Activity 3: Read for language features
1. Find out the personality
(1) Search for descriptive adjectives
The teacher inspires students to find out the descriptive words in the biography, which demonstrate the personality of Einstein.
(2) Look for impressive stories
The teacher guides students to notice the relevant impressive stories of Einstein given by the writer.
2. Pay attention to the rhetorical devices
The teacher leads students to pay attention to the rhetorical devices, including metaphor and simile, and do imitative writing tasks respectively by filling the blanks.
Activity 4: Make a summary of reading
The teacher demonstrates a mind map of the structure, content and language features of the biography and leads students to make a summary of the reading task.
Step 3 While-writing (12 mins)
Activity 5: Write a short passage (to introduce the person you admire most)
The teacher leads the students to write a short passage to introduce someone he or she admires most and reminds them of some great persons as well as some respectable and admirable people around them.
While writing, the teacher shows the checklist for student to refer to and offer some help if necessary.
Step 4: Post-writing (7 mins)
Activity 6: Share your work
First, the teacher asks two students to share their composition with the class respectively and asks another two students to evaluate their writing according to the writing criteria in the checklist.
Then the teacher makes a conclusion of the writing task and restates the understanding of greatness, which lies both in one’s achievements and his or her personalities.
Step 5: Home work
1. Take your draft back and revise it.
2. Design a poster to introduce the person you admire most, and hang it on the “hall of fame” in your class.
