Dear Sunday Globe,
I’m writing to you about your article in last Sunday’s newspaper, “Smart Phones Make Life Easier.” You did an excellent job explaining the good points of smart phones. They’re ____41____ and very helpful in our daily life. We feel safer always being able to call someone. On the other hand, you didn’t talk about their bad points at all. Thus, I hope you’ll let me give your readers some _____42____ on smart phone etiquette (礼仪).
The first point I’d like to say is loudness. When talking face to face in public, you wouldn’t shout. Likewise, don’t shout when you talk on your smart phone in public. In fact, the microphones in smart phones are so sensitive that you can be heard even if you speak quietly. ____43_____, keep your ringer nice and quiet, and don’t let it ring in meetings, at the movies, etc.
Another point that needs to be made is to ____44____ personal space. I think it is very impolite to make calls in small spaces or ____45____ rooms. This makes others uncomfortable and forces them to listen to your personal business. That’s why I use my cell phone at least three meters away from other people except in emergencies.
Sincerely,
Amber Jala

You're probably used to getting takeaway delivered to your home these days. Maybe you and your parents even order pizza sometimes. But the first pizza delivery in history took place nearly 150 years ago in Italy.
In 1878, Queen Margherita became the first queen of Italy. The queen got tired of eating fancy (高档的) meals and wanted to eat common food. Raffaele Esposito, the most famous pizza cook at that time, was asked to deliver a pizza to the queen.
He prepared a pizza with tomatoes, cheese and basil (罗勒)—the red tomatoes, white cheese and green basil standing for the colors of Italy's news national flag. As soon as the pizza was out of the oven (烤炉), he quickly delivered it to the queen himself. Esposito named the pizza after the queen.
Today, pizza remains one of the world's most popular fast foods. Little Caesars, another US pizza company, provides a "Hot-N-Ready" pizza at nearly all of its stores. These pizzas are cooked around the clock so that people can always get fresh pizzas. You go to the store, pay $6 and walk out with a fresh pizza with no waiting time. At 22, Amy Carter was a young and promising scientist in earthquake studies. One bad day, when she went to study in an area where earthquakes often happened, a big earthquake came. The ground shook hard, and many buildings fell down. Amy was trapped under the broken buildings for hours. When people saved her, her back and arms were badly hurt. After many operations and a long time of getting better, she could walk with a walking stick, but she couldn’t do fieldwork anymore.
But Amy didn’t give up. She decided to study and work on new ideas about earthquakes. She went to study at Stanford University. There, she tried her best to make better ways to predict earthquakes. She used what she knew about earthquakes and combined it with new computer skills. Soon, she had good results.
Now, Amy is a famous professor at the University of California, Berkeley. She started a company called SeismoGuard. This company made new earthquake warning systems. These systems use many sensors and smart programs. They can find the first signs of an earthquake and tell people a few seconds or minutes before the strong shaking starts. Her work helped many people in places where earthquakes often occur. In 2023, she won a big award for her great work. She also tells her own story to encourage young students to study science. Challenges help me grow
Everyone has met many difficulties in his/her life. So have I. One of my biggest challenges was learning to speak in public. When I was in middle school, I was very shy and afraid of speaking in front of others. My first English speech contest made me nervous and I almost forgot my words.
However, I didn’t give up. I practiced every day in front of a mirror and asked my teacher for advice. Slowly, I became more confident. Finally, I finished my speech successfully and even won third prize!
This experience taught me that challenges help us become stronger and braver. Now I am not afraid of speaking in public anymore. I believe that every difficulty is a chance to grow.

Sincerely,
Amber Jala
答案:41: D. 42: B. 43: C. 44: A. 45: E.
前面说“explaining the good points”,后面说“very helpful”。选项中有D. convenient(方便的),这符合智能手机的优点。
选项中有B. advice(建议),这很合适。
Besides(此外),表示附加点。
前面是“small spaces or 45 rooms.”
