When I was a child I was often told what not to eat. “You don’t want to get fat” was on constant repeat throughout my childhood. It really messed up my relationship with food — something that took me years to overcome. Because of this, I’m careful not to connect what my kids weigh with their worth as people. I encourage my daughter to make healthy snack choices and often dissuade (劝阻) her from a second dessert. But one day when I heard her saying “I think I’m too fat,” my heart sank. It made me wonder if giving her advice on snacks was having an unintentionally negative impact.
According to Charlotte Markey, a professor of psychology, food is one of the rare subjects where, as parents, saying less is more. “There are so many things in parenting that are good to talk through, but I’m not convinced that food is one of them,” she says. “It just creates some worries and insecurities in kids that aren’t necessarily healthy.”
Instead, she recommends applying a well-known concept among nutrition experts called the “Division of Responsibility,” where parents provide a variety of mostly healthy foods to their kids at fixed times, and the kids themselves decide what and how much they want to consume — even if that means occasionally eating more cookies than carrots.
Allowing kids to eat what they want also exposes them to the natural consequences of their decisions. “When your child says, ‘My stomach hurts,’ you can say, ‘Well you had a lot of sugary foods and you might feel better if you made some other choices,’” says Markey. “Let them feel like they have some control over it.”
I’ve been trying out these strategies and I’ve found that when I’m less restrictive, they do make better decisions. “Feeding is a long game,” says Markey. “The food you have available makes a huge difference. Even if they don’t eat it, they’ re seeing it. And then all of a sudden it clicks.”
4. What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph?
A. She is upset by her kids’ weight. B. She is critical of the way she was fed.
C. She is interested in making food. D. She is particular about what she eats.
5. Which of the following would Markey disapprove of?
A. Allowing kids to eat cookies occasionally. B. Offering various foods to kids at fixed times.
C. Explaining to kids the risks of taking snacks. D. Talking with kids about school at mealtimes.
6. What should kids do according to the “Division of Responsibility”?
A. Make diet decisions on their own. B. Share their food with other kids.
C. Eat up what is provided for them. D. Help their parents do the dishes.
7. What does the author think of the strategies she has been following?
A Costly. B. Complex.
C. Workable. D. Contradictory.

The Mona Lisa is the famous Leonardo da Vinci painting of a woman with a mysterious smile. This week, the woman parted her lips to whisper an ancient secret.
Scientists using X-rays to examine the chemical structure of a small part of the painting discovered a technique Leonardo used in the work. An oil paint used for it was a special, new chemical mixture, which suggests that the Italian artist was in an experimental mood when he worked on the painting in the 16th century.
“He loved to experiment, and each of his paintings is completely different technically,” said Victor Gonzalez, a chemist who has studied the chemical element of several works by Leonardo and other artists. The researchers found a rare lead compound (铅化合物) — plumbonacrite, in Leonardo’s first layer of paint. The discovery proved that da Vinci most likely used lead oxide to thicken and help dry his paint. The paint in the study is about the thickness of a human hair, lying in the top right area of the painting.
The scientists looked into its atomic (原子的) structure using X-rays, moving particles at the speed of light, permitting researchers to look deeper into the paint structure. “Plumbonacrite is really a fingerprint of his recipe, as it’s the first time we can chemically confirm it,” Gonzalez said.
Rembrandt, the Dutch master, may have employed a similar blend in his 17th-century paintings. Gonzalez and fellow researchers have also detected plumbonacrite in his art. It’s believed that Leonardo used lead oxide powder, which has an orange color, to thicken his oil paint and speed up drying. “What you will get is an oil that has a very nice golden color,” Gonzalez said. “It flows more like honey.”
But the Mona Lisa — said by the Louvre to be a portrait (肖像) of Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a Florentine silk businessman — There’s more to her gaze than meets the eye. “What we are saying is just a little brick in the knowledge,” Gonzalez said.
8 What technique did da Vinci potentially use in the Mona Lisa?
A. The employment of tailored X-rays. B. The application of a rare lead compound.
C. A special mixture of oil paints. D. The universal use of atomic structures.
9. What does the use of plumbonacrite suggest about Leonardo’s painting approach?
A. Willingness to experiment. B. Giving priority to conventions.
C. Technically identical output. D. Concentration on paint drying.
10. What is Gonzalez’s attitude towards the use of lead oxide powder?
A. Dismissive. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Favorable.
11. What can we infer about the Mona Lisa from the last paragraph?
A. It still holds secrets yet to be uncovered.
B. It echoes the realities of the worldly life.
C. It’s a perfect combination of old and new.
D. It serves as the key to understanding Leonardo.

Have you ever felt so stressed that you just sort of froze? Your body goes still, you can’t feel much but, at the same time, your senses are working overtime. You know you must act soon; but it’s as if something is stopping you. This “freezing”, or tonic immobility in academic terms, is an adaptive defense response to stress or danger.
When we freeze, our heart rate drops and our blood pressure changes. Our pupils might become wider. A flood of hormones (荷尔蒙) spread quickly, readying us for action. It can all happen within seconds.
While fight-or-flight seems logical for survival, freezing appears counterproductive — potentially too much to handle, making us incapable of acting or making a decision. But is that really all that’s going on? Not according to Prof Karin Roelofs, a neuroscientist who studies freezing at Radboud University.“Many people think that freezing is a kind of shutdown of the system,” she says.“What we actually find is that in threatening situations, freezing actually helps gain more information, prepare actions, and improve perception and decision-making.” Freezing acts like an emergency flow state: watchful, not petrified.
Importantly, this response can be trained. Roelofs highlights two groups controlling freezing: living statues, street performers maintaining extreme stillness and snipers (狙击手) requiring absolute stillness while making decisions. Lab research confirms this. A virtual reality shooting game showed players with stronger freezing responses performed better and decided faster. Freezing doesn’t slow responses. “Brain noise reduces. Perception increases. You make better decisions faster,” Roelofs clarifies.
But let’s say you’re not a sniper, or don’t spend your weekends as a living statue. What if you’re about to take an exam or lead a big business meeting? Those situations involving social pressure, may not be life or death, but still can cause freezing. The key is to use this response through training, particularly focused breathing: maintain slow, rhythmic exhalation Instead of feeling out of control, you can master it and — sniper or not — take your best shot.
12. What happens in “freezing” according to the text?
A. Awareness is lost.
B. The heart pounds.
C. Senses are sharper.
D. The breath quickens.
13. What does the underlined word “petrified” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Confused. B. Panicked. C. Distressed. D. Occupied.
14. Why are living statues and snipers mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A. To contrast response types.
B. To illustrate freezing causes.
C. To support response training.
D. To criticize stressful professions.
15. How should students manage exam freezing according to the text?
A. Seek professional help.
B. Apply trained breathing.
C. Hold breath to stay still.
D Make last-minute revisions.

I must share a heart-warming experience I cherished this week, both as a caring individual and a member of the community. I take the train, my main commuting (通勤) way, to work every morning from a train station near my house. I can get to the station quite easily as there is a way at the back of the station which provides a great shortcut. In summer, when it’s hot, I always try to rush through it because it can get quite smelly from all the garbage that people throw away.
It was one of those days that I was trying to rush through as usual when something made me stop for a moment. I saw the most unexpected and beautiful act by an old woman walking ahead of me with the help of a white stick. The old woman was quite short and thin, and had white hair. I remember that she was wearing a bright orange jacket and she was walking, assisted by a white cane. She was walking slowly as each step took some effort. I hadn’t particularly noticed her at first, until she stopped near a garbage bin.
She slowly laid her walking stick against the garbage bin and then leaned on it with her right hand. Then she bent down and reached for the garbage, but she clearly found it difficult and it took her a while. She picked up some garbage off the ground with her left hand and slowly straightened herself up again, all the while using the garbage bin to support herself. She threw the garbage inside the bin, dusted her trousers off and then reached for her walking cane again. She then gradually stood up straight and carried on walking. I was blown away to see this amazing old woman make such a painstaking effort to keep even a small part of the way clean! I haven't been able to stop thinking about that all day.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Inspired by the old woman’s act, I also did my part in keeping the way clean.

A. Costly. B. Complex.
C. Workable. D. Contradictory.

根据第一段中“When I was a child I was often told what not to eat. ‘You don’t want to get fat’ was on constant repeat throughout my childhood. It really messed up my relationship with food — something that took me years to overcome. (当我还是个孩子的时候,我经常被告知什么不能吃。“你不想变胖”这句话在我整个童年时期不断重复。这真的搞砸了我与食物的关系 —— 这是我花了多年时间才克服的问题)”可知,作者童年时被灌输的饮食观念对其产生了负面影响,由此可推断出,作者对自己童年时被喂养的方式持批判态度。故选B项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“According to Charlotte Markey, a professor of psychology, food is one of the rare subjects where, as parents, saying less is more. ‘There are so many things in parenting that are good to talk through, but I’m not convinced that food is one of them,’ she says. ‘It just creates some worries and insecurities in kids that aren’t necessarily healthy.’ (根据心理学教授夏洛特·马基的说法,食物是为数不多的家长说得少反而更好的话题之一。“在育儿方面,有很多事情值得深入讨论,但我不认为食物是其中之一,”她说。“这只会给孩子们带来一些不必要的担忧和不安全感,这并不健康。”)”可知,马基不赞成家长和孩子过多谈论食物相关的话题,而向孩子解释吃零食的风险属于谈论食物的话题,所以马基不会赞成。故选C项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Instead, she recommends applying a well known concept among nutrition experts called the ‘Division of Responsibility,’ where parents provide a variety of mostly healthy foods to their kids at fixed times, and the kids themselves decide what and how much they want to consume — even if that means occasionally eating more cookies than carrots. (相反,她建议应用营养专家中一个著名的概念,即‘责任划分’,在这个概念中,家长在固定的时间为孩子提供各种主要是健康的食物,而孩子自己决定想吃什么和吃多少 —— 即使这意味着偶尔吃的饼干比胡萝卜多)”可知,根据“责任划分”,孩子应该自己做饮食决策。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“I’ve been trying out these strategies and I’ve found that when I’m less restrictive, they do make better decisions. (我一直在尝试这些策略,我发现当我不那么严格限制时,他们确实会做出更好的决策)”可知,孩子们确实会做出更好的决策,所以作者会认为自己所遵循的策略是可行的。故选C项。

8. What technique did da Vinci potentially use in the Mona Lisa?
B 9. A 10. D 11. A

根据原文第二段内容“An oil paint used for it was a special, new chemical mixture, which suggests that the Italian artist was in an experimental mood when he worked on the painting in the 16th century.(.用于这幅画的颜料是一种特殊的新型化学混合物,这表明这位意大利艺术家在 16 世纪创作这幅画时有着探索创新的意愿。)”和第三段的“ The researchers found a rare lead compound ( 铅化合物 ) — plumbonacrite, in Leonardo’s first layer of paint. The discovery proved that da Vinci most likely used lead oxide to thicken and help dry his paint.(研究人员在列奥纳多的第一层颜料中发现了一种罕见的铅化合物 —— 铅白铅矿(plumbonacrite)。这一发现证明,达・芬奇很可能使用了氧化铅(lead oxide)来给颜料增稠并助其干燥)”可知,达芬奇在《蒙娜丽莎》中可能使用的技术是应用了一种罕见的铅化合物(即plumbonacrite),具体是通过使用氧化铅来增稠和加快颜料的干燥。这一发现基于科学家使用X射线分析后,在画作首层颜料中检测到该化合物,从而证实了达芬奇实验性的绘画技法。故选B项。
【9题详解】

D. Make last-minute revisions.
C 13. B 14. C 15. B

根据第一段中“Have you ever felt so stressed that you just sort of froze? Your body goes still, you can’t feel much but, at the same time, your senses are working overtime.
根据第四段中“Importantly, this response can be trained. Roelofs highlights two groups controlling freezing: living statues, street performers maintaining extreme stillness and snipers (狙击手) requiring absolute stillness while making decisions. Lab research confirms this. (重要的是,这种反应是可以训练的。Roelofs强调了两组控制僵住的人:活雕像,即保持极度静止的街头表演者,以及在做出决定时需要绝对静止的狙击手。实验室研究证实了这一点。)”可知,提到活雕像和狙击手是为了说明僵住反应可以通过训练来控制,从而支持“这种反应可以通过训练来掌控”的观点。故选C项。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“The key is to use this response through training, particularly focused breathing: maintain slow, rhythmic exhalation (有节奏的呼气). (关键是通过训练来利用这种反应,特别是专注呼吸:保持缓慢、有节奏的呼气。)”可知,学生应该通过训练呼吸来应对考试时的僵住反应。故选B项。

考查并列连词。句意:这意味着夏天的结束和秋天的开始。分析可知,“the end of summer(夏天的结束)”与“the start of autumn(秋天的开始)”为并列关系,用并列连词and连接。故填and。
“It is time to do...”,固定句型,意为“到做某事的时间了”。故填to gather。
故填is。
特指立秋的前夕,用定冠词the,“on the eve of...” 故填the。

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Inspired by the old woman’s act, I also did my part in keeping the way clean.

Word spread, and our efforts soon caught the attention of the local community.

Inspired by the old woman’s act, I also did my part in keeping the way clean. The next morning, I brought a pair of gloves and a big garbage bag from home before heading to the station. As I walked through the shortcut, I bent down to pick up every piece of trash I saw — crinkled snack bags, empty plastic bottles, and even tiny candy wrappers hidden in the grass. It took me a few extra minutes, but seeing the path grow cleaner made my heart feel light. Later, I started asking my neighbors who also took the train to join me. To my surprise, two of them agreed right away, and soon we formed a small team that cleaned the area every weekday morning.
Word spread, and our efforts soon caught the attention of the local community. The neighborhood committee heard about what we were doing and provided us with more cleaning supplies — brooms, dustpans, and even trash cans with “Keep Our Home Clean” labels. Some students from the nearby primary school also volunteered on weekends, bringing their parents along too. Gradually, the smelly shortcut transformed into a tidy, pleasant path. Last week, I even saw the old woman with the white stick again. When she walked through the clean path, she stopped for a moment, smiled, and nodded at us gratefully. That small gesture made me realize: a single kind act can spark a chain reaction, making the whole community warmer.
