It was very dark outside. I heated the food in the kitchen again, but my dad still didn’t come back from the forest. He worked as a forest ranger(护林员). In the morning, he told me he would go to check the new small trees and that I didn’t need to wait for him for dinner. But now, the wind was blowing hard and making a loud noise, like an animal. I stood at the door and called him, but he didn’t answer.
“I can’t wait any longer,” I thought. I took a flashlight from the corner and went out. The light showed me the way, but the shadows of the trees looked scary, like claws. I held the flashlight more tightly. I was worried that Dad might be lost or in trouble, so I walked into the forest slowly.
The wind blew harder, and the leaves made noise. I was scared and kept looking back, but I saw nothing. The flashlight was dying. Just then, I heard someone shout, “Xiaoyu? Is that you?”
It was Dad! I shouted, “Dad! I’m here!” I saw the light move, and then I saw his orange ranger clothes. I ran to him and jumped into his arms. I could smell the pine on him, and I almost cried. “Son, why are you here?” Dad asked. Dad’s hands were cold, but he hugged me hard. “My phone stopped working. I was on my way home.” I put my face against his coat. Listening to his heartbeat, I felt safe again.
24. Why did the writer go into the forest with a flashlight at night?
A. To look for the newly planted trees. B. To search for his dad.
C. To check the forest as a ranger. D. To find his lost phone.

27. What can we learn from the passage?
A. He loved his father deeply. B. He often got lost in the forest.
C. He disliked his father’s job. D. His father didn’t care about his safety.
C
Whether it is the childhood friend who had a baby or the thoughtful neighbor who moved away, many people can think of someone they care about but have lost touch with when they look at the contact list on their phones.
Research from across the social sciences has consistently shown that social relationships are critical for mental and physical health. However, a paper published in Nature Communications Psychology, based on a series of studies conducted with more than 2,400 participants, discovered that people are surprisingly hesitant to initiate interactions to reconnect. There are various barriers to reaching out, many of which are identified similar to the ones that prevent people from talking to strangers. This similarity made researchers wonder whether the passage of time makes old friends feel like strangers.
In one study, researchers asked 288 people how willing they were to engage in various everyday actions, including picking up garbage, booking a dentist appointment, and critically, talking to a stranger. Sure enough, people were no more willing to reach out to an old friend than the listed things.
Researchers have also worked on an intervention shown to ease anxieties about conversing with strangers. We decided to adapt that approach to the case of reconnecting with old friends. So we asked some of our study participants to complete a three-minute warm-up exercise in which they sent messages to current friends and acquaintances. Meanwhile others-our control group-simply scrolled(滑动) through social media. Afterward every participant was encouraged to contact an old friend. Only about a third of people in the control group sent a message while about half the people in the warm-up group did so. That’s because practicing the behavior involved in reaching out to others reminded people of how simple it is to send a message and how enjoyable it can be to connect.
Social relationships are a key source of happiness. Reaching out to old friends is easier after warming up, which benefits mentally and physically. So people could go through the contact list on their phones and message a few folks they talk to often-and then find someone they haven’t spoken to in a while and have been missing and try to get hold of them, too.
28. What is the benefit of reconnecting an old friend?
A. Interactions are initiated. B. The passage of time is narrowed.
C. Social relations are enlarged. D. Overall well-being is improved.
29. Why are people hesitant to reach out to an old friend?
A. They were more willing to talk to a stranger.
B. They need to adapt some approaches to reconnecting.
C. They prefer to send messages to some acquaintances.
D. They feel distanced from someone out of contact for long.
30. What could we do to intervene when reconnecting with old friends?
A. Scroll through social media. B. Text current friends.
C. Talk to a stranger. D. Complete an exercise in the gym.
31. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Warm up to get in touch with old friends
B. Do not leave old friends familiar strangers
C. Connect and enjoy personalized social relationships
D. Stay in contact with old friends and find source of happiness
D
In the ever-changing world of health trends, the claim(声称) that green tea is a powerful fat-burner has caught the public’s fancy. Driven by marketers and the spread of information in the media, this idea has become a hot topic. Being the curious cat I am, I reached out to two experts for their thoughts: computer scientist Chris Johnson, who’s really good at seeing through false claims, and physicist Philip Taylor, who bases his ideas on research.
Green tea has a long-standing reputation for health benefits, but the recent craze about its fat-burning abilities has taken it to new heights. Health magazines and online articles are full of stories and supposed scientific evidence suggesting that a few cups of green tea a day can speed up metabolism(新陈代谢) and burn fat effortlessly.
However, Johnson warns that such claims are often not based on scientific research. “The green-tea-for-fat-loss industry is a classic case of people just following the crowd,” he says. Companies are going along with the trend, making grand promises without scientific backing to support them. This over-promotion of green tea as a fat-burner is risky. Consumers, hoping for a quick and easy way to lose weight, may waste their money on ineffective products. When these products fail to deliver, it can lead to disappointment and a loss of trust in the health and wellness industry.
Taylor, though he knows what’s going on, has a more balanced view. From his research, he thinks there might be a little bit of truth to the claim that green tea can aid in fat loss, but only when combined with a balanced diet and regular exercise.
So, does green tea really burn fat? Well, it’s not a simple yes or no. There might be some small effects on your metabolism, but it’s definitely not a magic pill for losing weight. As consumers, we should be careful about these claims and only believe information that’s based on real evidence. In the end, a healthy and lasting way to lose weight involves proper nutrition, regular physical activity, and a realistic understanding of what different foods and drinks can do for our bodies.
32. Why did the author ask two experts for their thoughts?
A. To satisfy his curiosity. B. To find new consumers.
C. To test a theory. D. To join the crowd.
33. Which may Johnson agree with about the green-tea-for-fat-loss industry?
A. It does the trick for people’s health.
B. It lacks reliable evidence to support the claims.
C. It encourages consumers to buy fitness products.
D. It transforms people’s understanding of getting into shape.
34. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Green tea can be made into a magic pill.
B. Green tea is the first choice for weight reduction.
C. Proper diet and exercise contribute to weight loss.
D. It’s easy to tell the weight-loss effect of green tea.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Does Green Tea Really Burn Fat?
B. Does Green Tea Remain a Mystery?
C. Green Tea: A Magic Weight-Loss Solution
D. Green Tea: A New Focus of Scientific Research

Ten-year-old Sami loved to visit his grandfather’s house. The house was near the beautiful blue sea. At the seaside stood thick and tall palm trees with green coconuts hanging from them. When the coconuts fell down, Sami would break them open and drink the coconut water. Sami liked to play under the trees. It was always great fun to spend the holidays at Grandpa’s place.
This winter vacation, Sami was surprised when he came to his grandfather’s village. There were hardly any trees left. He saw houses built near the sea. People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any greenery left.
Grandpa’s house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut. He hugged each palm tree in his courtyard. He also named the two big trees near the front door — one was Petu, and the other Betu. He had planted them with his own hands and today they had become large, massive trees with thick trunks. They were tall and green and gave the sweetest, juicest coconuts.
One night, Sami was awakened by a strange sound. He could not sleep. He tossed(辗转) and turned in bed.
Suddenly, the ground shook as if the earth was splitting. He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa. He clung (附着) to his grandpa tightly. Grandpa cried out, “It’s an earthquake It’s an earthquake” They ran outside the house. They thought that would be safe.
Suddenly, there was a loud sound; the earth was not splitting but the sea was roaring. People were shouting, screaming and crying, “The sea is rising. The sea is rising.” The villagers started running away from the beach. Sami watched dumbstruck(呆若木鸡).
The waves were rising higher and higher. Sami thought, “How big the waves are” He went into the house again and saw water coming in from all sides. He was scared.
Sami remembered his mother telling him long ago, “You must always get out of the house if the floods come too near.” He ran outside the house with Grandpa. But the water came surging(汹涌) in.
Waves about twelve meters high came rushing in, drowning everything. Water was all around and everywhere.
Paragraph 1: Grandpa held Sami’s hand tightly but a huge wave separated them.

Now, I don't even open the door when he knocks, but IT makes me uncomfortable. I'm afraid i'll have to move again. You can move in with my sister Susan. The girl Jennifer, who was sharing her apartment, has moved out, so SHE has an extra room. Now that's great. Your sister is such a good girl. Everyone likes sir. I'll call her and move as soon as possible. After all, I need to sleep very well every night in order to do well in the coming exam. Ivy, how do you like your new apartment? Well. I wish I hadn't moved in. The man who lives upstairs often plays the piano till midnight. I really cannot stand IT. Why don't you ask him to stop? I've tried, but IT doesn't work. He never listens to me. What's worse, he isn't the only one that I cannot stand. The woman who lives across the hall often comes over to borrow things, but SHE sell them, returns anything. then don't lender anything. Now. I don't even open the door when he knocks, but IT makes me uncomfortable. I'm afraid i'll have to move again. You can move in with my sister Susan. The girl Jennifer, who was sharing her apartment, has moved out, so SHE has an extra room. Now that's great. Your sister is such a good girl. Everyone likes her. I'll call her and move as soon as possible. After all, I need to sleep very well every night in order to do well in the coming exam. Listen to the next question. If you are going to be a straight talker, you have to believe that it's a virtue. If you have an opinion and you just stayed IT allows the other person to either try to change your opinion or to agree with you. If you require people think you agree, how can you then further the conversation when you have different opinions and they are not really exposed? Agreeing is easy. Disagreeing takes more courage. Several years back when I was CEO at autodesk, there was a very senior level woman who was very smart and well spoken, but he did not wear appropriate clothes. IT was distracting and he was not being taken seriously. I said to her manager who was male, you need to tell her. He said, oh, no way. So I called her in and Frankly stated what I thought was happening. I told her you are not getting the respect you deserve. I said, go and get a personal shopper. Just say i'm a senior business person and need help dressing appropriately. SHE came back and honest god, IT was a different person. He said he felt really good, and her promotion went way up early in my business career. If people asked me a question, i'd try to answer IT honestly, and that was rewarded. I had managers who wanted me around because I would actually tell them what was happening. Now listen again, please. If you are going to be a straight talker, you have to believe that it's a virtue. If you have an opinion and you just stayed IT allows the other person to either try to change your opinion or to agree with you. If you are quiet, people think you agree, how can you then further the conversation when you have different opinions and they are not really exposed? Agreeing is easy. Disagreeing takes more courage. Twelve, what made the speaker popular with the managers? Thirteen, what is the passage mainly about?

25. What is the correct order of the writer’s experience?
1. He heard his father’s call. 2. He took a flashlight and entered the forest.

A. 1234 B. 2134 C. 2314 D. 3214
26. How did the writer most probably feel when he saw his father?
A. Angry. B. Excited. C. Afraid. D. Sad.
27. What can we learn from the passage?
A. He loved his father deeply. B. He often got lost in the forest.
C. He disliked his father’s job. D. His father didn’t care about his safety.
B 25. C 26. B 27. A
根据文章第二段“I took a flashlight from the corner and went out. The light showed me the way, but the shadows of the trees looked scary, like claws. I held the flashlight more tightly. I was worried that Dad might be lost or in trouble, so I walked into the forest slowly. (我从角落里拿起手电筒,走了出去。灯光给我指了路,但树的影子看起来很可怕,像爪子一样。我把手电筒握得更紧了。我担心爸爸可能会迷路或遇到麻烦,所以我慢慢地走进森林。)”可知,作者担心爸爸迷路或遇到麻烦,所以拿着手电筒走进森林去寻找爸爸,故选B。
25. 细节理解题。根据文章内容,首先是第二段“I took a flashlight from the corner and went out. (我从角落里拿起手电筒,走了出去。)”即作者拿了手电筒进入森林,对应2;接着第二段,第三段“I was worried that Dad might be lost or in trouble, so I walked into the forest slowly. The wind blew harder, and the leaves made noise. I was scared and kept looking back, but I saw nothing. (我担心爸爸可能会迷路或遇到麻烦,所以我慢慢地走进森林。 风吹得更厉害了,树叶发出声音。我很害怕,一直回头看,但什么也没看到。)”可知作者感到害怕但继续前进,对应3;然后第三段“Just then, I heard someone shout, ‘Xiaoyu? Is that you?’ (就在这时,我听到有人喊:“小宇?是你吗?”)”即作者听到了父亲的呼喊,对应1;最后第四段“I ran to him and jumped into his arms. (我跑向他,跳进他的怀里。)”即作者跑向父亲并拥抱他,对应4。所以正确顺序是2314,故选C。
26. 推理判断题。根据文章第四段“I ran to him and jumped into his arms. I could smell the pine on him, and I almost cried.
故选A。
D 29. D 30. B 31. A
根据第二段的第一句话“Research from across the social sciences has consistently shown that social relationships are critical for mental and physical health.(社会科学领域的研究一致表明,社会关系对身心健康至关重要)”和最后一段的第一句话“Social relationships are a key source of happiness.(社会关系是幸福的重要来源)”可知,和旧友新建立联系可助益身心健康。
根据第四段中“Only about a third of people in the control group sent a message while about half the people in the warm-up group did so. That’s because practicing the behavior involved in reaching out to others reminded people of how simple it is to send a message and how enjoyable it can be to connect.(对照组中只有约三分之一的人发了信息,而热身组中约有一半的人发了信息。这是因为练习与他人联系的行为提醒人们发送信息是多么简单,联系是多么愉快)”可知,文中the behavior就是指先和最近的朋友或者熟人互动发送消息做热身,以便于不联系旧友之间破冰。故选B。
31. 主旨大意题。根据全文内容,结合最后一段“Social relationships are a key source of happiness. Reaching out to old friends is easier after warming up, which benefits mentally and physically. So people could go through the contact list on their phones and message a few folks they talk to often-and then find someone they haven’t spoken to in a while and have been missing and try to get hold of them, too.(社会关系是幸福的重要来源。热身后更容易联系老朋友,这对身心都有好处。因此,人们可以浏览手机上的联系人列表,给几个经常联系的人发信息,然后找到一个他们有一段时间没有联系的人,也可以试着联系他们)”可知,最后两段的信息都指向答案A。给最近的朋友熟人发信息后,和老朋友破冰更容易,这对精神和身体都有益。A项“热身和老朋友联系”最适合作为标题。故选A。
But the water came surging (汹涌) in.
Waves about twelve meters high came rushing in, drowning everything. Water was all around and everywhere.
Paragraph 1: Grandpa held Sami’s hand tightly but a huge wave separated them.

Paragraph 2: “Sami, Sami” Grandpa cried. “Don’t be scared, little one, come to me, quickly.” “But Grandpa, I can’t swim” Another wave came with terrifying speed and force. Sami cried in despair. Suddenly, Sami felt himself thrown onto the top of a tree. He immediately held it. Looking around, he saw everything was terribly destroyed; but in the near distance, his Grandpa was on another tree. Soon it was calm; both Grandpa and Sami came down the trees and rushed to hug each other, then they hugged the trees with tears of gratitude. (78 words)
