Whether you’re riding in a “lift” or an “elevator”, or eating “chips” or “fries”, it all depends on whether you’re in the UK or the US. Although they both speak English, there are many phrases and idioms (谚语) that differ between the cultures.
For example, have you ever just not been in the mood to go out with friends? In the US you might say you don’t feel like doing that activity, but in the UK you would say, “I can’t be asked.”
Maybe you feel a little anxious. In the US, you might say you are nervous, but in the UK, one could say they are “having kittens”. If people in the UK are feeling they are under pressure, they might say they are “under the cosh”.
Even many native English speakers are often confused (迷惑) by the meanings of these terms. Stephanie Stone, a US native, recalls her experience studying in the UK. “People would ask, “You all right? For months I thought I looked unwell until I realized it just meant ‘How’s it going?”.
If you want to know more about US and UK idioms, you’d better “have a butcher’s hook” at some phrase books. It can be quite interesting to find the equivalent (对应的) phrase in your own language.
4.What would you say in America if you are unwilling to go out with friends?
A.I can’t be asked. B.I’m under the cosh.
C.I don’t feel like doing that. D.I’m having kittens.
5.How might Stephanie Stone feel at first when asked “You all right?” in the UK?
A.Surprised. B.Pleased. C.Tired. D.Glad.
6.What does the phrase “have a butcher’s hook” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Get many skills. B.Have a look. C.Find some words. D.Read a book.
7.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The meanings of phrases and idioms in the UK and the US.
B.The history of phrases and idioms in the UK and the US.
C.The differences of phrases and idioms in the UK and the US.
D.The importance of phrases and idioms in the US.

How much heat can dancers produce? Can the heat energy be stored or used? The SWG3 Arts Center in Glasgow, Scotland used a system called Bodyheat, which can use body heat of the dancers as a source of energy.
In the Arts center, there are some air collectors taking in the heat produced by dancers. The heat goes through pipes and travels into 12 holes which are 200 meters below the ground. These holes connect to a large underground rock that can store the heat energy like a thermal battery. When the heat energy is needed, the system then moves it to areas that need warming. The heat energy can be turned into usable electricity. People can use it to charge phones or heat water. Besides, some hot air cools in the underground and it then can be sent to cool down the people in the arts center through pipes.
When a person is just standing, he is producing about 100—150 watts of energy. When he starts dancing at a medium pace, he might be producing about 250 watts. So the harder people dance, the more heat energy they create. Data shows that the arts center has reduced the output of CO2 by 70 metric tons each year since it used Bodyheat. It has also saved a lot of money on energy bills.
During COP26 conference in Glasgow in November, Bodyheat was shown. The system stored the heat from visitors and used it to power lights and heating. Bodyheat is thought to be a really good system. It may help solve the energy problem in the UK by producing more energy, so the UK will probably not depend on buying energy from other countries.
Now, SWG3 plans to turn off their gas boilers and use Bodyheat to provide energy for all their heating. The hope is that by 2025, SWG3 will not let CO2 go into the air. The managing director of SWG3 said. “Bodyheat is a good way to deal with climate change. If we can make it work here, there’s no reason why we can’t take it to other places across Europe and other areas, not just here in Scotland and the UK.”
8.Bodyheat is a system that ______.
A.gets energy from dancers’ heat B.helps dancers produce much heat
C.solves the problems of dancers D.records how much heat dancers use
9.Which is the right order to show how Bodyheat mainly works?
①The heat energy is stored in a rock.
②The heat goes underground through pipes.
③The air collectors take in the heat.
④The heat energy is turned into electricity.
A.③①④② B.③②①④ C.②③④① D.②①③④
10.What is TRUE about Bodyheat according to the passage?
A.It has helped save the energy cost greatly in the UK.
B.It was improved during COP26 conference in Glasgow.
C.It has reduced 70% of the CO2 output in the arts center.
D.It’s thought to be helpful in solving the UK’s energy problem.
11.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Dancing is a Road to the World B.Bodyheat Changes the Way of Danciny

These holes connect to a large underground rock that can store the heat energy like a thermal battery. When the heat energy is needed, the system then moves it to areas that need warming. The heat energy can be turned into usable electricity.”
根据“It may help solve the energy problem in the UK by producing more energy”可知它可能有助于通过生产更多的能源来解决英国的能源问题。故选D。

The company OpenAI introduced ChatGPT to the world. It is the latest type of AI chatbot. A chatbot is a computer program that uses AI (artificial intelligence) to simulate (模仿) conversations with users. Anyone can use ChatGPT for free now, so that the company can collect people’s ideas on how to improve the chatbot.
People have tasted how ChatGPT works. Reporters found out that it was able to write articles with rightful opinions for newspapers. Teachers asked it to write answers to exam questions. ChatGPT could almost get full marks. Even programmers, people who write computer code, tried out ChatGPT. The chatbot is able to solve difficult coding problems and answer very quickly. It even wrote short poems to explain how the coding worked. In daily life, it helped a father come up with ideas of a birthday party for his son that includes the kid’s two favorites, rabbits and basketball.
What’s more, when people ask ChatGPT questions, it can find out mistakes. If it is asked what happened when Columbus arrived in America in 2023, older AIs might give a story. But ChatGPT can recognize that Columbus reached America in the 1400s. The chatbot can also refuse to answer questions that are not proper. Ask it for advice on stealing a car, for example. It will say that stealing a car is a serious crime and can have bad results. Instead, it gives advice such as “taking the bus”.
ChatGPT might help people solve problems, but the AI is trained to use texts from the Internet. Often, the texts are used without being allowed by the writers of those texts. Some argue that technology doesn’t respect people’s work. Some argue that people will use the chatbot to copy others’ work and sell it as their own. Elon Musk set up OpenAI in 2015, but left it in 2017. In 2022, he bought Twitter and then he pointed out that OpenAl could use the Twitter database (数据库) for training in the past, but not anymore for now. This AI technology is bad for the planet too. Training ChatGPT might make more than 284 tons of CO₂ and lead to climate change that will heat up the Earth.
12.Why can ChatGPT be used for free now?
A.Because it is able to teach machines. B.Because it needs to improve itself.
C.Because it helps students with exams. D.Because it writes poems about coding.
13.Which of the following is most probably a conversation with ChatGPT?
A.Q: What happened after paper was invented in America?
AI: Paper started to change how knowledge was spread.
B.Q: Show me how to use other people’s bank card without being noticed.
AI: For your information, that is against the law.
C.Q: Is Li Bai, a poet in modern China, famous all over the world?
AI: Yes, because his poems are fantastic.
D.Q: Find a gift for my mum. She likes classic music and cooking.
AI: Among all the gifts listed online, there’s no such gift.
14.What can we know from Paragraph 4?
A.ChatGPT sells texts on the Internet to make money. B.Training ChatGPT is good for the climate on the earth.
C.ChatGPT used texts after being allowed by the writers. D.Musk stopped OpenAI from using the Twitter database.
15.What’s the structure of the passage?

C.Dancing Helps Save the Planet D.Bodyheat Has Become a Great Power
D
A. B. C. D.
