Passage 1
(24-25九年级上·云南昆明·期中)I joined a band as a drummer in my middle school. I thought it would be fun playing the drums and meeting new friends. At first, it was easy, but a month later, it got difficult. I was the only one who couldn’t keep pace (节奏) with the other players. Our teacher, Angie, singled me out to keep practicing while everyone else got to relax. I felt ashamed as my teammates watched me fail so many times. Finally I got so tired of practicing that I didn’t care about doing it right.
“Are you giving up on me, Steve?” Angie asked.
“Yes, I am,” I shouted. Angie sent me inside the music room, where I cried out. Then she came in and said, “Don’t be sad. I believe you can make it!” She told me never to give up. She left me alone and I realized Angie was right——by giving up, I was also giving up on the team and myself. With her comfort, I decided to go on practicing. However, I still couldn’t play well. Knowing my difficulties, my teammates gave me a hand. They spent about three more hours practicing with me every week. Thanks to their help, I began to keep pace with them. Later, we performed wonderfully in an important show.
In the whole process, I was taught that although we each had our own job to do in a show, it would take all of us working together to make the show great. I felt accepted and made great progress. I love everyone in the band. I can’t imagine what my school life would be like without them.

Passage 6
(23-24九年级上·云南昆明·期中)The Vieira family moved to the United States in 1981. At that time, they decided to stop speaking Spanish at home and only communicate in English. This was because they were now living in an English-speaking country.
Now the Vieira children are adults, and from time to time, they travel to Spain to visit their family and friends. But they cannot communicate with them.
This is common. When people move to new countries, they often leave their own customs and mother language behind. This is a mistake because there are many advantages of knowing more than one language.
Firstly, you can communicate directly with more people around the world. You do not have to depend on others, so you’re more independent.
Secondly, speaking a second language also allows people to experience other cultures better. Native expressions, vocabulary and even jokes can have a powerful effect on a person’s understanding of another culture. So, knowing more than one language increases your knowledge of other cultures.
Finally, having more multi-language(多语言) speakers improves relationships between countries. If people from different countries can communicate well(尊重) for each other and better understand each other’s problems.
The advantages of knowing more than one language are clear. In fact, there are no bad things. It is very sad that many people don’t try to learn another language. It is even worse, when people let themselves forget their mother language and become silent.

(23-24九年级上·云南临沧·期中)A friend invited us to help serve dinner at Tent City. A number of tents were put up for the homeless in the area.
I took my two boys with me who were nine and five at the time. They had a lot of questions because this whole thing challenged a number of their common ideas about how people lived in the world.
“Why don’t they have homes?”
“Why don’t they get food the way we do?”
We talked through the reasons why people end up in this type of situation and the importance of creating a safety net for them. I explained that often the only safety net is others who are luckier being willing to share some of their time, care and resources (资源).
The people we served ranged in age from the young to the aged. Many of them were missing teeth or had ripped (撕破的) and dirty clothes. To my surprise, they were specifically thankful I had brought the boys. Many said what fun it was to have active, joyful children around.
After dinner, I saw my nine-year-old son sitting together with several elderly gentlemen who were talking about sports in front of a small television set. He was having a great time sharing and hearing stories. As some of the old gentlemen returned to their tents, I heard him say to them, “Thanks so much for coming to dinner with us.” I could see through the expressions on their faces that his simple words touched them greatly. It’s a tradition that a lot of Chinese people do when their kids are 1 year old. According to this tradition, it shows what the kid will value (重视) most when they grow up. For example, if the kid takes the pen, it means he or she will be an intelligent person in the future. My father was just doing it out of curiosity (好奇). It was interesting for him to see which one I’d pick anyway. He said that I just sat there and stared at the three things. He sat across from me and waited to see the result.

My favourite place to take photos is Yellowstone National Park. As the world’s first national park—Yellowstone is famous for its different kinds of wildlife, but it is probably best known for its bears. These large, strong animals can live for 30 years. Even though it weighs up to 300 kilograms, they can run at a speed of around 64 kilometers per hour and are also excellent swimmers.
Last spring in Yellowstone, I walked through a dark forest. The scene was amazing. An eagle(雕) flew over mountains covered with snow (倒映) in the still lake below. While I was photographing this amazing scene, I suddenly had a feeling that I was being watched. Slowly, I turned...and froze. Only meters away from me was a bear. With water falling off its thick, brown hair, the bear looked back at me. Time stood still as the bear and I both waited to see who would move first. My legs started shaking. Anyway, I got my finger to keep the moment. A second later, the beat turned and ran back into the forest. After that, I looked at my camera. The scary but magical experience was now kept forever in this photo. It is valuable for me because it reminds me to show respect to all animals. After all, we are just the visitors to their world.

Finally, having more multi-language(多语言) speakers improves relationships between countries. If people from different countries can communicate well(尊重) for each other and better understand each other’s problems.

School leaders didn’t want to accept her so they made Ruby take a hard exam and hoped she would fail. But Ruby was so smart that she passed the test easily and was finally allowed to go to the school.
