Dancing like a spinning top
Spain loves its festivals, and as autumn arrives, Anguiano—home to about 500 people in the country’s northern region of La Rioja—gets ready for its Dance of the Stilts (高跷舞) festival.
Why do they dance on stilts? People aren’t quite sure how the tradition started. Some say that the place was very damp (潮湿的) and people used the stilts to walk through the tall grasslands in the past. Others believe that the farmers used to dance to Saint Mary Magdalene, asking for a good harvest (丰收).
Every year, eight men in yellow skirts, white shirts, and rainbow waistcoats (背心) spin (旋转) down a 58-meter slope (斜坡) on half-meter stilts. As they spin, their skirts spread like bells. “We look like human spinning tops,” said 27-year-old Oscar Moreno.
To keep their legs safe, dancers tie cushions (衬垫) to the stilts—and if they fall, the crowd rushes to catch them. For Moreno, the hardest part is when someone brushes (触碰) against him while he is dancing. “You have to focus on one point so you don’t feel sick,” he said.
The dance, recognized as a cultural heritage (文化遗产) since 2018, takes place twice in July and again on the last Saturday of September. It begins in front of Saint Andrew’s church. Dancers make quick, jumping steps to the beat of castanets (响板) before going down the slope, “Outsiders think we’re a bit crazy, but in La Rioja, people are proud of how brave the dancers are,” Moreno said.
Though the dance is not well-known outside of La Rioja, Moreno is hopeful about its future. “It’s a tradition you want to keep alive,” he said.
4. Why is Paragraph 2 written?
A. To tell when the festival is celebrated. B. To explain why the festival became popular.
C. To describe how local people once used stilts. D. To show how the festival may have started.
5. How do dancers keep their legs safe while dancing?
A. By slowing down their spinning. B. By using protective cushions.
C. By asking guards to follow them. D. By spinning in the same direction.
6. What do the people in Anguiano think about the dance?
A. It’s a bit crazy. B. It is about to die out.
C. It makes them proud. D. It should be known to everyone.
7. What is the story mainly about?
A. The author’s favorite Spanish festival. B. A special but fading dance festival in Spain.
C. An introduction to the Dance of the Stilts festival. D. A dance festival with the longest history in Spain.

①Many cultures have stories of talking trees that give advice as well as warnings to people. Alexander the Great and Marco Polo were said to have visited such a tree in India. New research has found something amazing: it seems that plants can communicate after all.
②It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals (化学物质) to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant gets attacked by insects. The plant gives out chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. This is like a warning, or a call for help. When another plant gets the chemicals, it starts to give out its own, different chemicals. Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning system, so that we can use it to grow more crops.
③More surprisingly, plants also use sound to communicate. People can’t hear these sounds, but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots. Some trees make clicking noises when there is not enough water.
④Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can link nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system the “wood wide web”, which is linked underground by fungi (菌类). It links the roots of different plants to each other. It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. Using the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other. However, it may lead to bad effects. Plants may use it to steal food from each other, or spread chemicals to attack other plants.
⑤Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other. Who knows? Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to “talk” with them ourselves.
8. The writer starts the passage by ________.
A. telling stories B. giving advice C. listing numbers D. giving examples
9. New research is showing that plants can communicate with each other through _______.
①chemicals ②leaves ③sound ④fungi
A. ②③④ B. ①③④ C. ①②④ D. ①②③
10. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to Paragraph 4?
A. Plants can share information and even food with scientists.
B. Scientists can help stop the plants from attacking each other.
C. Plants can use wood wide web to attack other plants.
D Scientists can build a system to link almost every plant in a forest.
11. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The secrets of how plants communicate. B. The study about the plant warning system.
C. The plants that give advice as well as warnings. D. The reasons why scientists do research about plants.
D

Science’s CEO Feng Ji on Sina Weibo.
