During the hot summer, we modern people can enjoy cold drinks in an air-conditioned room to cool off from the heat. But how did ancient people cool down without these modern ways?
Ice container
A popular cooling tool is called “Jian”. It’s large and filled with ice. It was made of ceramic and later copper in Chinese history. People see the “Jian” as an ancient fridge, which can be used to make cold drinks.
Hiding food in the well
During the Qin and Han dynasties, the most common way to cool off is by using their wells. Some families put food in a basket and lowered the basket into the well with a rope.
Bamboo lady
Ancient people in southern China used a special bamboo tool. It was round, straight and tube-like with small grid-like holes. The middle of it was empty. People could hold it in their arms, or put their feet on it to stay cool too.
Dragon fur curtain (龙皮帘)
The dragon fur curtain was used to stop the hot waves in summer, and keep inside cool. Of course, it was not from real dragons but from large boas. However, the skin was valuable and difficult to get, so only the royals (王族) used it.
1. What are these four tools used for in ancient China?
A. Studying at home. B. Relaxing in free time.
C. Working in autumn. D. Cooling down in summer.

Tricks with numbers can be fun. Here’s one you can try with your friends:
Think of a number. 5
Add 3. 5+3=8
Multiply by 2 8×2=16
Subtract 4. 16-4 =12
Divide by 2. 12÷2=6
Subtract the original number. 6-5 =1
If you did everything right, your answer will be 1. Try the trick again using any different number. Your answer will still be 1.
Is this magic? No! Math is magic only for people who don’t understand it. We can explain our number trick in several ways.
Let’s use pictures first. Suppose (假定) our numbers are buttons.
1. Think of a number.
Since we can start with any number of buttons, let’s hide them in a bag.
2. Add 3.
Our bag of buttons and 3 more buttons.
3. Multiply by 2.
Now we have 2 bags and 6 buttons altogether.
4. Subtract 4.
Take away 4 buttons.
5. Divide by 2.
That leaves us with 1 bag and 1 button.
6. Subtract the original number.
Take away the bag of buttons we started with, and we are left with 1 button!
This will happen every time. Remember: there could be a number of buttons in the bag, and we did not change the buttons in it. So we will always end up with 1 lone button at the end of this trick. This lone button stands for 1.
Besides, people can use an algebraic way. They might pick “n” for example. Then they would explain the trick in a similar way.
No matter what solution it is, the way we think is the same. We just use different ways to explain the problem. So the next time you see a number trick, try to find out why it works. You can be sure that if it’s math, it isn’t magic.
4. In the math trick, what is the first step?
A. Add 3. B. Multiply by 2. C. Think of a number. D. Subtract 4.
5. Why does the text use bags and buttons to explain the trick?
A. To help students understand more easily. B. To make the trick look like magic.
C. To show that math is for smart students. D. To make math harder for students.
6. If you choose the number 4 at the beginning of the trick, what number will you get at the end?
A. 1 B. 2 C. 3 D. 4
7. What is the main idea of this text?
A. Math tricks are magic. B. Algebra is difficult to understand.
C. We can use different ways to explain math. D. Bags and buttons are better than numbers.

When it rains a lot, people like to say, “It’s raining cats and dogs,” even though cats and dogs aren’t really falling from the sky.
On the island of Puerto Rico, when people say, “It’s raining frogs,” it really is raining frogs.
Early in the morning, tiny one-inch frogs called coquis jump from the trees. They fall to the ground with a rainy plop, plop, plop.
Why do the frogs climb up into the trees? And why do they jump down?
When children get ready for bed at night, the coqui jumps out of its nests (巢穴). It calls, “Ko-kee-kee-kee, ko-ko-kee-kee,” and climbs into a tree. High up in the tree, the coqui can find all kinds of insects to eat, more insects than it can find on the ground.
After the coqui eats, it doesn’t climb down the way it has climbed up. Instead, it spreads its fingers and toes—and jumps. Coquis drop almost straight down, like rain, while they turn slowly in the air. Scientists call it “parachuting”.
What a quick trip! And what a good way to get away from dangers—little Puerto Rican owls and huge spiders would like nothing better than a coqui to eat for breakfast.
Coquis can’t stay up in the trees in the daytime. The treetops are too hot and dry, which is good for insects but not for frogs. Frogs need water. But coquis don’t drink water. Once they plop to the ground, they lie flat on the wet leaves or moss and soak up (吸收) the water through the skin of their stomachs.
In the evening, it’s “Ko-kee, ko-kee”—a song to quiet children to sleep.
In the morning, it’s plop, plop, plop—a rain of frogs!
8. How does the writer lead in the topic?
A. By comparing. B. By telling stories.
C. By asking questions. D. By listing numbers.
9. When do people on the island of Puerto Rico see raining frogs?
A. At noon. B. In the morning. C. At night. D. In the afternoon.
10. Why do coquis climb up the trees?
A. To get ready for sleep. B. To look for wet leaves.
C. To stay in a cool place. D. To find more food to eat.
11. How does jumping down from trees do good to the coquis?
A. It’s a quick way to keep them safe.
B. It makes them grow up as quickly as possible.
C. They can sing more beautifully when jumping.
D. They can enjoy themselves jumping down together.

Dear Badminton,
I do remember the days before we met. I came back to an empty home with nothing to look forward to. There were many nights when I would lie in bed thinking if I would ever find anything like you. After years of nothing happening, you moved next door in the form of a court (场地) and threw your doors open for me to walk through.
In my life, I never knew I would find such happiness in spending time getting to know you. When I started this journey with you, I was so nervous but you were patient and let me try again and again. That is one thing I like about you — no matter how disappointing I might be in life, you always give me a chance. I fail many times. However, you always let me play again.
___▲___. I wake up early to train. I put the right food into my body so that I stay healthy. I sleep well so that I feel energetic. I want to be a better person than the one I was yesterday. There’s a glow in my face and a light in my life. That happiness is why I want to spend my time with you. I’ll not be able to explain to you how much I love you because you’re a sport. As a sport you don’t believe words or read letters. You only see actions. That is why I’ll walk the talk.
When I’m in the court and I see old people coming in with their inhalers (吸入器) to play, I suddenly have the answer to that question I have been asked so many times —“What do you want to be when you grow up?”I want to be there with you until the end.
Love you always,
Paul

2 Which of the following may common people use while sleeping?
A. The ice container. B. The well. C. The bamboo lady. D. The dragon fur curtain.
3. Where can you probably read the text?
A. In a magazine. B. On the Internet. C. In a newspaper. D. On a TV.

Tricks with numbers can be fun. Here’s one you can try with your friends:
Think of a number. 5
Add 3. 5+3=8
Multiply by 2. 8×2=16
Subtract 4.
C
When it rains a lot, people like to say, “It’s raining cats and dogs,” even though cats and dogs aren’t really falling from the sky.
On the island of Puerto Rico when people say, “It’s raining frogs,” it really is raining frogs.
D
Love you always,
Paul
