It was Christmas Eve when my elder sister and I decided to
open our presents before our mom got home from work. She usually
came home about an hour after we got home from school, which we
thought was plenty of time to sneak a look (at the gifts under
the tree.
My elder sister opened present after present while I was ordered
to stand guard at the big window in our front room. Finally, when
my sister's curiosity was satisfied,we changed places.
After opening a few presents,I found my heart beat faster to
open one end of a present and look inside."Cool!Mom and Dad got
me headphones!"I pulled the headphones out of the box and was
about to put them on when my sister shouted,“Quick!Wrap(包
裹)it back up!Mom's coming!”
I put the headphones back in the box but my hands were
shaking. My heart beat faster as I tried to get the tape to stick.I had
9

mother came into the front room.I jumped up and said,"Hi,Mom!"
She smiled at me and said“Hi”back, but didn't appear to suspect(怀

everything had been opened,my sister and I looked at each other,
and our eyes met.Our secret was safe, but somehow Christmas
morning didn't feel the same.
My sister and I never opened our Christmas presents early
again.I don't know if it was that opening our gifts for the second
time just wasn't as much fun as the first time,or if we came too
close to getting caught and didn't want to think about what our
mother would have done to us.

According to the Global Times,it is reported that two online
videos showing children telling their parents "I love you"have gone
viral in China. The first, filmed by an Anhui TV station, shows a
number of college students telling their parents they love them. The
responses are mixed."Are you drunk?"asked one parent. In another
similar video, shot by a Shanxi TV station,a father responded even
less patiently一“I am going to a meeting,so cut the crap.”
Why don't Chinese families use those words?Theories revolve
around the nature of Confucian teaching."The parents'responses
show that many Chinese are not good at expressing positive
emotions,"Xia Xueluan,a sociologist from Peking University,told
the Global Times."They are used to educating children with
negative language,”
This isn't the first time that China has done some soul-
searching about familial love-last year China Daily asked a cross
section of people if they said "I love you"to their parents, spouses,
and children."I have never said 'I love you'to my family,and I
don't think I will in the future,"one 56-year-old man told the paper.
“Saying it aloud is embarrassing for me.”
Still,that doesn't mean that love can't be expressed.In a
separate article,China Daily spoke to Zhao Mengmeng,a 31-year-
old woman who said she had never told her father she loved him
face-to-face ("I find it a bit odd").Sometimes actions speak louder
than words.Zhao gave her father a photo album featuring
photographs of them together on almost every one of her birthdays
in June 2012.The pictures went viral online, being forwarded
hundreds of thousands of times on social media.
"I didn't sleep the night I heard about it,"her father told China
Daily after the story attracted mainstream attention."I have now
memorized some of the comments on the collection of pictures.
8.What can we infer from the text?
[A]It is not direct for Chinese families to say "I love you".
[B]Chinese parents are too proud to express "I love you".
校本单元评估
[c]Chinese parents are good at expressing positive emotions.
[D]Young parents in China are willing to express "I love you".
9.Why don't Chinese parents express "I love you"to their children?
[A]Because they can't express it.
[e]Because they are not in the habit of expressing so.
[c]Because they think it unnecessary.
[D]Because they think it should be done only among young
couples.
10.How did Zhao Mengmeng express "I love you"to her father?
[A]By giving him an album containing their photos.
[B]By kissing her father's face and telling him by words.
[c]By speaking it out bravely in a TV program.
[D]By writing out the three words in a letter.
11.What's the author's attitude toward the statements about "I love
you”?
[A]Opposed.[B]Objective.[c]Critical.
[D]Indifferent.
D
When I told my parents I was quitting my job,my parents
objected strongly. They said something to me,"You won't have any
money,NO!”“Setting up a business is very risky,you shouldn'tdo
it!”and“Your job is so suitable with rather great pay,why do you
want to quit?”
Their comments didn't wind me up since I had already made up
my mind.I told them that I knew what I was doing. At the same
time,I understood their concerns, which I had already put into my
business plan.
After 9 months or so,my parents stopped discouraging me.
After my first or second year, they actually understood that I was
doing this for my career. It's been 10 years, and for the past 8 years,
they never asked me to do anything different. In my family, when
you don't get strong discouragement, that means acceptance.
Similarly, when I told them about my plan to travel around the
world,to try a different diet,among other plans,they would
10
completely oppose at first. But after I pushed forward and moved
forward with my aims for a while, they would come to accept them.
At the end of the day, remember that your parents love you.If
they don't care about you, they wouldn't be against what you do at
the risk of influencing your relationship with them.So don't hate
them.Use their objection as a positive force. It will take time for
them to change their mind, but when they are aware of your
determination (and see you succeeding, and feeling happy and
fulfilled, they will realize that you are no longer a little boy/girl who
requires their worry and control. That's when they start to be more
hands-off and give you the space to grow and come into your own.
12.What did the author decide to do after giving up his job 10 years
ago?
[A]Go on a diet.
[B]Start his own business.
[c]Travel around the world alone.
[D]Improve his relationship with his parents.
13.How does the author get his parents'acceptance when doing
something different?
[A]By sticking to his goals.
[B]By turning to someone else.
[c]By showing more respect for them.
[o]By having more communication with them.
14.What advice does the author offer in the last paragraph?
[A]Change jobs from time to time.
[e]Live a happy and successful life.
[c]Find the space to improve yourselves.
[o]Think about parents'opposing opinions positively.
15.What does the text focus on?
[A]Whether to give up your job when you don't like it.
[B]What to do when your parents don't support you.
[c]How to communicate with your parents properly.
[D]Whether to change your goals now and then.

meeting. If people want to change the agreements, they can do it
then.Children, teenagers and parents are expected to do what agree
to do.
Take time for fun.Meetings are a good way to solve problems.
20 To add fun to meetings, talk about good things.Thank each
person for some help given during the week.Ask each person to do
the same.Ask people to talk about what is good for them right now.
This sets a positive tone.It also teaches your children to encourage
other people and themselves.
A.Some people wonder if a family meeting is worth the effort.
B.Here are some ideas to help you.
C.Find a place to post the notes so that everyone can read them.

At school,Michael could not pay attention to anything. He

Steven, and slowly walked back towards an empty bench.

body rising,and his cheeks blushing.Throwing a glance
at Steven, who was chatting happily, cocking his head

embarrassment he was going to face.Just at the moment
Steven gasped and cried out in alarm,"Oh hell, where is
my wallet?"Some gossips began.Michael heard words of

the wallet and strode to Steven,"I found it over there,

Steven,he added,"I thought of sneaking it,of course."
Recalling what he had done to Michael,Steven suddenly
