How much pocket money do you get? How do you spend it? The Blue Book of Chinese Teenager Financial (金融的) Education (2024), a book released in March, shows that social activities now take up more of teenagers spending.
The book was about teenagers’ spending habits. It was based on studies in nine cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The results show that students are spending more and more on their relationships with friends and classmates, such as having meals together and buying birthday gifts.
Only one-third of high school students think about the price when choosing gifts. Most say they only care about what their friends like.

You probably remember looking at the paper, feeling you didn’t know any of the answers. Your heart was beating fast...
Not 45 , you think that experience made you feel upset and nervous.
But maybe it didn’t have to be that way. As students work through the exercise themselves, they read information about how the brain builds on experience and how the body makes use of stress, for example, a fast-beating heart tends to send more blood to the brain to help you think. The exercise also 47 ways to succeed in stressful situations, and it asks students to write about what they might do differently next time.
Researchers invited thousands of high school and college students to take the exercise. The findings show that this exercise appears to be able to change our understanding of the world around us and our responses to it. Compared with those who didn’t take the exercise, students who took part thought about stress differently, turning it into a way of energizing the motivation to achieve their goal. 48 , the exercise changed their body responses for the better, preparing the body to respond to events as a challenge rather than a threat.
“Difficulty and struggle are your friends,” says Christopher Bryan, a social psychologist and one of the researchers.
Those experiences don’t feel good in the moment, but it’s the path anyone who became truly excellent at anything had to travel.
The exercise could be put into further 49 . It could be specially made for athletes or office workers in the future.
Once it has been fully 50 , the exercise could be ready for use in high schools and colleges nationwide.
The researchers don’t just want young people to rethink stress; they want adults to rethink young people.
“Our studies advise that we should not teach young people that they are too weak to get over difficulties, but that we should, instead, provide them with resources and guidance so that young people can show their skills and creativity in dealing with big problems,” they write in the paper.

Trevor got off the bus around three and walked home alone. It was the first time his parents weren’t home to greet him after school. They had a meeting with his older brother’s principal, and Trevor begged to stay home. He was excited to have the house to himself.
He took out his key and opened the door. His dog, Molly, ran to greet him. “Hey, guy, just me.”
Trevor locked the front door behind him, as promised his parents. He put the key on the table and dropped his backpack on the floor. “What should I do first?”
He turned on the TV and grabbed a snack. After watching a few shows and eating too much, he got bored. “Want to play outside?” he asked the dog, picking up two tennis balls. He walked to the back door, slid the wooden bar off the door, and put it on the floor. His mom always asked him to keep it on the door, even though there was already a lock.
The dog rushed outside, and Trevor ran after it, closing the door behind him without taking the back door key.
They played until they got tired. “Time to go inside and warm up.” Trevor went to the back door and tried to pull it open. It wouldn’t move. He looked inside and saw his cat, Misha, curled up on the wooden bar, sleeping in the evening sunlight.
“No way! We’re locked out!”
He ran to the front door. Locked. He checked all the windows. Also locked. Trevor almost cried.
When his parents returned home before dark, his mom asked in surprise. “What are you doing out here?”
“Misha locked us out,” Trevor said, rushing inside.
“Being home alone wasn’t what you expected, huh?” Dad said playfully.
