Cheering up people on their birthdays isn’t the only thing we can do to make their day. Life constantly presents us with 33 to take an extra step or do a kind deed that will make a 34 to someone. There’s a small brick house I visit from time to time. It’s not the house that is special, but rather the person who lives inside.
I met Miss C about 45 years ago when she was my sister’s kindergarten teacher. I remember looking into her classroom wishing I was her student. Miss C created a safe place where we could be whatever we wanted to be in that moment. My parents reassured (安抚) me I could start school when I was 4. Though, when I turned 4 in the spring, I couldn’t understand why I had to wait until September.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a teacher. When I graduated, I couldn’t wait to invite Miss C to my classroom. She arrived one day, and I saw joy on my students’ faces singing the same songs I sang with her as a child. As a new teacher, I marveled at how she connected with children. For years, Miss C volunteered in my classroom.
Over the years we have shared in each other’s ups and downs. She asks me for updates about my family and friends, and she tells me about hers.
I am here for her now as the time to sell her house is near. I bring up boxes from her basement. We go through every painting a student has given her, every thank-you note a parent has written and her teaching aids.
I find papers featuring the letters of the alphabet (字母表). I find my own name printed in green marker. Suddenly, my mind goes back to Room 3.
More than 40 years ago, Miss C sat on a chair while my classmates, and I sat on the carpet (地毯) at her feet. We learned about the letters and their sounds. Now, Miss C sits on her rocking chair (摇椅), and I find myself sitting at her feet. Over tea, we talk for hours. I listen carefully because I know I still have more to learn from her.
Our friendship is one that neither one of us expected.
Educators know teaching is a profession devoted to the development of young individuals. The lucky ones get to see what their students have done with their lives. The exceptional ones never leave their students’ hearts.
41.What can we learn about the author when she started kindergarten?

B.She didn’t like her teacher at first sight.

A.To be disappointed at. B.To be surprised at.
C.To be satisfied with. D.To be angry with.
43.The right time order of the following events according to the passage is ________.

③ I looked forward to being Miss C’s student.
④ Miss C came and volunteered in my classroom.
A.③ ② ④ ① B.① ③ ② ④ C.① ④ ③ ② D.③ ① ④ ②
44.What do we know from the last paragraph?

Buddy or Friendship Benches (长椅) are needed because playgrounds can be lonely places sometimes. When a school places the bench, they teach a little lesson to the kids on how it is to be used. Then when a child sits on the bench, it sends out a message to others that basically says, “Hey, I’m alone right now and would welcome the company (陪伴) of others.” Kids in the playground see this and from their training, they see there is a fellow student in need. They are encouraged to come over and sit on the bench and make a new friend.
Benches like this have been around for a while now in many schools. But in Ireland, they are trying to do something different with them. This school in Cork in the south of Ireland is the 247th to get benches from a social organization called “Buddy Bench Ireland” that doesn’t just provide schools with benches, but also runs special projects with trained child psychiatrists (精神病专家). They use the bench as an opportunity to start conversations about mental health. They talk about the importance of knowing and understanding your feelings and those of others.
Judith Ashton, a co-founder of Buddy Bench Ireland said, “The children need to understand what the bench is about, what it represents — friendship, understanding, listening to each other and the most important thing is that it’s important to express feelings.”
But do children really use the bench? It’s a matter of great public concern. Sinead Mcgilloway from Maynooth University carried out a study and said, “We found that 40% of the children told us that they had actually used the benches at the time of the study. And over 90% said that they would talk to a child if that child was sitting on the bench. So, there’s nothing to worry about. ”
Children’s mental health and safety at school is increasingly a concern in many countries. In Ireland, they’re hoping these benches will not only deal with problems like school violence and school bullying (校园暴力和校园欺凌), but also give students the confidence to open up about their feelings.
46.According to the passage, buddy benches might ____.
A.make students feel relaxed
B.help students feeling lonely to find friends
C.be a symbol of psychology classes
D.appear in schools filled with problem children
47.The organization “Buddy Bench Ireland” ____.
A.makes buddy benches more popular
B.brings more new-pattern benches to schools
C.encourages more students to choose buddy benches
D.provides psychological care projects along with benches
48.In Judith Ashton’s opinion, what students most need to know is ____.
A.how to understand each other B.what buddy benches are about
C.the importance of expressing themselves D.the necessity of listening to their friends
49.From what Sinead Mcgilloway said, we can know that ____.
A.60% of the children in the study disliked these benches
B.over 90% of the children in the study once felt lonely
C.he once worried about children with mental problems
D.the public don’t have to worry about the use of buddy benches
50.According to the passage, which statement is right?
A.The benches in Ireland have the same functions as those in other countries.
B.The benches are used to start conversation about physical health.
C.The benches are only about expressing feelings.
D.The benches in Ireland will have more functions.

‘Lust for Life’ celebrates the innovative Dutch painter
这本书写尽梵高传奇的一生
Lust for Life (《渴望生活:梵高传》) is a biographical (传记的) novel about the life of the famous Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh. Written by US author Irving Stone, this work of historical fiction provides a vivid portrayal (生动的描写) of the artist.
The novel traces Van Gogh’s life from his early years in the UK to his final days in France. Stone weaves together (交织在一起) historical facts and imaginative storytelling to create the artist’s journey. The title, Lust for Life, perfectly shows Van Gogh’s fervor both in his art and his life.
What impresses me most in this book is that, to paint a family that eats potatoes, Van Gogh thought he must first paint all the farmers in the village. To add color to his paintings, he would set aside the sketches (素描) to which he had devoted all his efforts to improve and start over. However, among the Impressionists of the 19th century, this hardworking painter is still regarded as an anomaly (异常的人).
The image of Van Gogh is one of a lonely stubborn (固执的) soul, surrounded by the emotions of the artist. If we speak of Van Gogh’s desire for life, we can say that it lies in his passion for creation. He was a lonely seeker: living in his thoughts and imagination, and consumed (吞噬) by a hunger for reality.
Another strength of Lust for Life lies in its ability to immerse (沉浸) the reader in the world of 19th-century Europe. Its vivid descriptions of the landscapes and cities contribute to a sensory experience that helps the readers better understand the environment in which Van Gogh lived. Stone mixes the social and cultural contexts of the era effectively into the book, offering readers a broader perspective on the challenges faced by artists during that period.
However, some critics argue that Stone changes some facts and characters in the story to make the story dramatic. While this may be true, it doesn’t destroy the overall impact of the novel as an effective vehicle for drawing the reader in and immersing them in the times and turmoils (混乱) of Van Gogh’s life.
In conclusion, this book is a well-deserved celebration of the artist and his spirit of creation. This celebration, however, came too late.

On April 2021, 24-year-old Jibin Madathil packed a bag with a few clothes and other necessities and left his home in search of a job. But he was certain that a full-time job would never work for him as he wanted to explore new things. So, he decided to spend many days at different destinations, work somewhere for not more than a month, earn (挣钱) money and travel to another place.
“For as long as I can remember, I’ve been into travelling. Nearly hills, rivers and tourist places were the destinations at first,” says Jibin, a hotel management graduate.“ But when I became a teenager, an all- India trip was always my dream.”
When finding jobs at different locations became a task and his wallet felt lighter, Jibin decided to start a food stall (摊位) on his bike. He had a kerosene stove (煤油炉) and a few utensils (器具) along with some rice, bread and tea to travel on his way. He bought some more things to serve noodles, bread and tea on his way. The kitchen was set up on his bike’s top box where water and kerosene were stored. Everything felt simple as he had previous experience in a kitchen.
In some areas, there were hardly any food stalls. Jibin began his business in these places and it was an immediate success. He earned 500 — 600 rupees per day from his two- wheeler food stall.
“More than the income (收入) from the stall, it was due to the kindness of people that I set out on my dream journey. While some offered me work, others provided me with a space to sleep,” he says.
While usual riders cover hundreds of kilometers a day, Jibin finds a destination and stays there for a few days, getting to know its people and culture. This also helps him find small jobs too.
Jibin has plans to visit foreign countries on his two- wheeler. He is preparing himself and his bike for this big journey now. “Whatever happens, I’ll have my kerosene stove and utensils ready, which gives me the confidence of reaching my destination,” he says.
76.Why didn’t Jibin settle for a full- time job? (no more than 10 words)
77.What does the underlined part in paragraph 3 mean? (no more than 5 words)

I 26 gave in, and that evening, I set off to the hospital with a card, a cheese cake, and some balloons. My friend’s joyful surprise and grateful smile 27 me I’d done the right thing and this was a generous 28 for the little effort it had taken.
When I got home, I realized that not only had I cheered up a 29 friend on her birthday, but my own gloomy feelings had also 30 . Making her day had made my own!
That’s true 31 we take the time and make the effort to do something for someone else. It’s like the little saying, “Loving kindness is twice blessed; it blesses him who gives, and him who 32 .”
Cheering up people on their birthdays isn’t the only thing we can do to make their day. Life constantly presents us with 33 to take an extra step or do a kind deed that will make a 34 to someone. And the 35 thing is that as we do so for others, it changes things for the better for us too. Eventually, I think I have found the answer.

B.She didn’t like her teacher at first sight.

D.She found it hard to separate from her parents.

47.The organization “Buddy Bench Ireland” ____.

D.provides psychological care projects along with benches
48.In Judith Ashton’s opinion, what students most need to know is ____.
A.how to understand each other B.what buddy benches are about

Dear Jim,
How’s everything going? Thank you for your letter. Now I’m writing to tell you how I make new friends in my new school. When I frst meet my new friends, I smile and say hello to them. I believe a smile can help us make friends in a world of strangers. Also, I try to help them when necessary.
There are many activities which can help us get to know each other quickly. At the beginning of the term we all took part in military training. And then we joined in the tug-of-war and other activities. As we study in the same class, we often deal with problems together.
In my opinion, friends are really important. I know I am not alone here. I’m also lucky to have you as my friend. I just cannot imagine a world without friends.
Best wishes!

And over 90% said that they would talk to a child if that child was sitting on the bench.
