(One day, Gulliver (格列佛) was caught in a storm and his ship hit a rock, then broken. He was washed to the beach by sea wave. He walked and walked to find a city, but he was too tired and felt asleep. When he woke up, he found himself in Lilliput and a lot of tiny (极小的) people were around him.)
The King spoke in a high voice but I could hear all the words clearly. His followers and all the ladies wore rich and beautiful clothes. The ground where they were standing looked like gold and silver cloth.
The King and I often spoke to each other but neither (两者都不) of us understood a single word. I tried words from many languages—Dutch, French, Spanish, Italian and Latin. No one could understand my words, not even the cleverest of the King’s followers.
After about two hours the King left. His wife, children and their servants also went. There were strong guards (警卫) around me. This was to stop the crowd of people from hurting me.
An officer told the guards to hold six men who made me angry. These men were given to me and I had to choose their punishment (惩罚). I put five of them in my pocket. Then I pretended (假装) to eat the sixth man.
The poor man shouted terribly. The guards were worried when they saw my knife in my hand. Was I going to cut up the man? But I only cut the binding (捆绑物) round his hands. Then I put him on his feet and let him go. I lifted the other five men out of my pocket and put them gently on the ground too.
The people and the soldiers (士兵) were very happy with my great kindness. They told the King about it at once. The King ordered his men to make a bed for me and they had to join six hundred of their little beds together to make one bed for me.
At the same time the King asked all his advisers for their advice on how to deal with me. They were very worried. If my binding was cut, I might be dangerous. I was eating so much food that soon all the people would be very hungry. The farmers could not grow enough food to feed all of us.
The wise men thought that they should kill me. But they would not be able to bury (埋葬) me. My dead body would smell. This might cause (导致) much illness all over the country.

Parents of twins often say their children are a little unusual or a bit special. However, according to 16-year-old twin Gerald Scott, there are ways in which some sets of twins are quite amazing.
“My twin, Owen, and I have had a very special bond (关系) since we were born. When we were very small, we had our own language. Our mum says we used to talk to each other using our own special language. We knew what we were saying but nobody else understood. Even our mother didn’t understand us. As we got older, we started using telepathy to communicate. Sometimes we don’t need to speak at all; we just use our minds. We can somehow send messages to each other even when we aren’t in the same place. I know it sounds unbelievable, but I’ve always known if Owen was in trouble. Once he had a bad fall in rugby-he broke his leg and when it happened, I got this terrible pain in my leg.”
Although it sounds strange, telepathy between twins isn’t so unusual. There have been a lot of studies which have proved that some twins have this ability. One experiment involved eight-year-old Richard Powles and his twin, Damien. First, they were put in separate (隔开的), soundless rooms, and Damien was wired up to a machine that measured his responses (反应). Richard was then asked to put his arm into ice cold water. At the exact moment he put his arm into the water, Damien’s responses went wild. And it was the same whenever anything scary or surprising happened to Richard, his brother in the other room reacted too.
There have been cases between famous twins too. Actor Ashley Olsen tells us that, even when they are far away from each other, she knows when her twin sister, Mary Kate, is going through a difficult time or when she isn’t happy.
33.What does the underlined word telepathy mean?
A.A language that only a few people can understand.
B.A language that is only for twins around the world.
C.A way of sending messages without using words.
D.A way to speak to very close family members.
34.Which of the following is a fact?
A.Richard Powles and Damien were able to use telepathy to communicate.
B.Richard Powles and Damien did an experiment to show they were unusual.
C.Gerald Scott and Owen’s parents speak different languages at home.
D.Gerald Scott and Owen began to learn new languages when they got older.
35.The following sentence can best go after _________.
So, maybe it’s true—maybe some twins don’t need words at all to speak to each other.
A.Paragraph 1. B.Paragraph 2. C.Paragraph 3. D.Paragraph 4.
36.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Some twins like to share their ideas with themselves.

C.Twins know more languages than most other people.
D.Twins have special abilities when they are not together.

After the haircut
It’s getting hot. You go to have your hair cut. The barber Tony cuts off part of your hair and sweeps it away, but your hair’s journey is not over after the haircut.
Have you ever thought of planting your old hair after it’s cut off? Some farmers do! What comes up? Not wigs (假发), but bigger and tastier crops. Hair is full of nitrogen (氮) that helps plants to grow. When cut hair is mixed into soil, the hair breaks down, slowly letting out nitrogen so it can help flowers and vegetables get big a little faster.
If you’ve got a wool sweater on, you’re wearing a sheep’s haircut. Sheep grow fine curly (弯曲的) fur called wool. All those curls make air pockets that trap heat, keeping the sheep warm. Farmers shear the sheep in summer, so the sheep don’t feel too hot. And we use the hair to make warm clothes, socks, and hats. Wool can even take in rain without feeling wet. Wool also doesn’t catch fire easily.
What does your hair say about you? Even many years after it has been cut, hair can tell surprising secrets. Because hair is made from bits of old cells, it has trace (微量) of chemicals (化学物质) that were in the body when the hair grew. When people are kept in the situation of dangerous chemicals, these traces remain in the hair, even long after they have disappeared from the body itself. Testing hair can help doctors know if there are dangerous chemicals in the food and water. Hair can tell another important secret — whose hair is it? This can be used to help solve crimes.
Hair does so many things for us. It keeps us warm and cool, helps farmers, shows mysteries, and provides endless styling fun. One thing is for sure, it’s not just for wigs any more.
37.In which part of a magazine can we probably read this passage?
A.Fashion. B.Science. C.History. D.Health.
38.What does the underlined part “shear the sheep” mean?
A.Give enough food to the sheep. B.Wash the sheep many times.
C.Find living place for the sheep. D.Cut the wool off the sheep.
39.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A.Hair helps keep warm. B.Hair testing is important.
C.Hair can tell secrets. D.Hair helps solve crimes.
40.How is the passage organized (组织)? (P: Paragraph)
A. B. C. D.

Tongcheng City is in Anhui Province. It has rich culture. There are many famous historical sights. Among them, a two-meter-wide alley (小巷), or Liuchi Xiang in Chinese, is a very popular one. Lots of people come to visit it every year. There is a touching story about the alley.
In the Qing Dynasty, an officer named Zhang Ying received a letter from his family one day. From the letter, Zhang learned that his neighbor, the Wu family, wanted to build a house. But there was a disagreement (分歧) between the two families. It was about the alley between the houses. Zhang’s family wrote the letter to let the Wu family give up. However, Zhang wrote a letter back, saying,
“Writing a letter, miles away, just for a wall.
Why not give them one meter?
Looking at the ten-thousand-mile-long Great Wall,
Where is its builder Emperor Qinshihuang?”
After reading the letter, Zhang’s family moved their wall one meter back for their neighbour. Because they realized that the neighbours were much more important than the wall. The Wu family was deeply touched and moved their wall one meter back too. So there was a two-meter-wide alley between the two families.

C.Gerald Scott and Owen’s parents speak different languages at home.
D.Gerald Scott and Owen began to learn new languages when they got older.

—Adapted from Gulliver’s Travels
29.To the tiny people, Gulliver was a(n) ________ at first.
A.friend B.enemy (敌人) C.relative D.traveler
30.The underlined word “them” most probably refers to “________”.
A.the guards B.the officers C.the six men D.the soldiers
31.Put the following statements in the correct order according to the story.
①The King ordered his men to make a big bed for Gulliver.
②They couldn’t understand each other.
③The King spoke.
④Gulliver didn’t punish the six tiny people and let them go.
A.③②①④ B.①④③② C.③②④① D.②①③④
32.Why didn’t the tiny people in Lilliput kill Gulliver finally?
A.He was so strong that he would work for them.
B.He was so big and they didn’t have the weapon (武器) to kill him.
C.The King and his family liked him so much that they didn’t agree.
D.His dead body would smell and cause much illness in their country.
【答案】29.B 30.C 31.C 32.D
【导语】本文节选自《格列佛游记》,讲述了格列佛进入了小人国的故事。
29.细节理解题。根据“The guards were worried when they saw my knife in my hand.”可知,刚开始他们认为格列佛很危险,以为他是他们的敌人。故选B。
30.词句猜测题。根据“An officer told the guards to hold six men who made me angry. An officer told the guards to hold six men who made me angry. These men were given to me and I had to choose their punishment (惩罚). I put five of them in my pocket.”可知,划线单词是指那6个男人。故选C。
31.推理判断题。根据“The King spoke in a high voice but I could hear all the words clearly.”,“The King and I often spoke to each other but neither (两者都不) of us understood a single word.”,“But I only cut the binding (捆绑物) round his hands. Then I put him on his feet and let him go. I lifted the other five men out of my pocket and put them gently on the ground too.”和“The King ordered his men to make a bed for me and they had to join six hundred of their little beds together to make one bed for me.”可知,故事的发展顺序是国王说了一些话;国王和格列佛两人互相不理解对方说了什么;格列佛放了那六个小人;国王命令手下给格列佛做了一张大床,所以顺序为③②④①。故选C。
32.细节理解题。根据“The wise men thought that they should kill me. But they would not be able to bury (埋葬) me. My dead body would smell. This might cause (导致) much illness all over the country.”可知,因为格列佛的尸体会散发恶臭,可能会在他们的国家引发了许多疾病,所以最后没有杀了格列佛。故选D。
C
B.Studies show some twins can communicate specially.
C.Twins know more languages than most other people.
D.Twins have special abilities when they are not together.
【答案】33.C 34.A 35.D 36.B
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要讲述了一对双胞胎拥有他们自己的交流方式,这被称之为心灵感应,并通过实验探究证明了心灵感应的存在。
33.词义猜测题。根据第二段“As we got older, we started using telepathy to communicate. Sometimes we don’t need to speak at all; we just use our minds. ”随着年龄的增长,我们开始使用心灵感应来交流。有时候我们根本不需要说话,我们只是用我们的头脑。由此可知,划线词汇意为“心灵感应”,所有选项C符合题意。故选C。
34.推理判断题。根据第三段“One experiment involved eight-year-old Richard Powles and his twin, Damien. First, they were put in separate, soundless rooms, and Damien was wired up to a machine that measured his responses. Richard was then asked to put his arm into ice cold water. At the exact moment he put his arm into the water, Damien’s responses went wild. ”可知,八岁的理查德.波尔斯和他的双胞胎兄弟达米安。首先,他们被放在单独的、无声的房间里,达米安被连接到一台机器上,测量他的反应。然后理查德被要求把他的胳膊放进冰冷的水中。就在他把手伸进水里的那一刻,达米安的反应变得疯狂。由此可知,理查德.波尔斯和达米安能够用心灵感应进行交流。故选A。
35.细节理解题。根据第四段“Actor Ashley Olsen tells us that, even when they are far away from each other, she knows when her twin sister, Mary Kate, is going through a difficult time or when she isn’t happy.”演员艾什丽 . 奥尔森告诉我们,即使他们相距很远,她也知道她的双胞胎妹妹玛丽·凯特什么时候正经历一段困难时期,或者什么时候她不开心。由此可知,“So, maybe it’s true—maybe some twins don’t need words at all to speak to each other.所以,也许这是真的——也许有些双胞胎根本不需要语言来交流。”放在第四段后合适。故选D。
36.推理判断题。根据第三段“Although it sounds strange, telepathy between twins isn’t so unusual. There have been a lot of studies which have proved that some twins have this ability.”虽然听起来很奇怪,但双胞胎之间的心灵感应并不罕见。已经有很多研究证明一些双胞胎有这种能力。以及结合文中举的例子可知,研究表明一些双胞胎可以特殊交流。故选B。
D
