I have a question for all of us. Is all winning success (成功)? Winning is really, really fun. But I am here to share my idea: Winning does not always mean success.
All around the world, most people hope to win. We cheer for winners. We have become so focused (关注) on that end result (结果) instead of the process (过程), and when it is a win, we usually didn’t care how we got there.
We need to redefine (重新定义) success. Real success is developing winners in life for our world, win or lose. We may be able to plan our way to a win, but we can't plan our way to success.
Back to 1990, when I was first made the head coach of the UCLA Women’s Gymnastics Team, the best I could do was what other “successful” coaches had done. So, I became tough-talking and mean. I acted like a head coach whose only thought was to try best to win.
After putting up with me for a few years, our team asked me for a team meeting. And for over two hours, they gave me examples of how my arrogance (傲慢) was hurtful. That was my time-out, and I chose to change. I found out that I needed to support our student players as whole persons, not just players who won.
It is so much easier to give orders than to encourage someone to be better. And it takes a really long time to change. The key was to develop trust through patience and honesty. Let’s think about what you are talking with your parents on the car ride home. Are they focusing on the end result? Are you excited to use that time to show you are a winner? All of you care too much about the end result instead of your steps of learning. We are all coaches in some ways. We all have the duty to develop winners in life for our world. That is what real success looks like, and that is what we call a win-win.
33.The writer introduced the topic by ______.
A.asking a question B.showing some examples
C.listing a few numbers D.comparing two different things
34.The underlined word “it” in the Paragraph 2 refers to (指代) ________.
A.the process B.the end result C.the winner D.the real success
35.According to the writer, which of the following is a real success in life?
A.A kid who shows the medals and prizes he won to his parents.
B.A player who tries to win a gold medal at the cost of his health.
C.A coach who supports his members though the team didn’t win.
D.A parent who keeps asking about the grades his kid gets in the exams.

Two weeks after getting out of the caves, the judge told Tom, “Nobody will get lost in those caves again. I’ve closed the caves with big metal doors and three locks.”
Tom turned as white as a piece of paper. “Oh, Judge, Indian Joe’s in the caves!” As a result, Indian Joe lay dead on the floor. Tom finally felt safe.
The next day Tom and Huck talked about the money they had seen. Huck said someone else must have taken it from Indian Joe’s room in the tavern.
“Huck, I bet the money’s in the caves! Will you go there with me and get it out?”
“I will if we get in and don’t get lost.”
“That’s no problem. Just through the entrance that only I know about, we can get into the caves.”
So boys started their treasure hunt adventure. They went down the river, entered the secret hole and crawled to the far end of the tunnel. They tied their string to a rock and moved on. They soon got to the place where Tom saw Indian Joe that night. The boys went carefully over to the place. They found a small bed of blankets by a large rock but there was no money-box.
“Look, Huck. There’re footprints and some candle wax on this side of the rock, but not on the other sides. I’m sure the money is under the rock. I’m going to dig.”
Tom took out his knife, started digging and hit wood. He lifted the piece of wood and found a large hole. So they climbed inside it and found the treasure box, about $12,000, which were shared by them both.
Now Widow Douglas gave Huck a home though Huck wasn’t used to the comfortable but regular life. However, to be a member of Tom Sawyer’s Gang, Huck decided to try the new life again.

36.The structure of the passage is ________.
A. B. C. D.

Jan follows Tom down the road, then she remembers something. “The time capsule (胶囊)!”
Tom shows her the biscuit tin under his jacket. “I’ve got it.” They walk quickly back down the road past Jamie’s house and Pauly’s house. It seems so long since she arrived here in the past. And now maybe there’s the possibility that she can return to the future. They run up the path through the trees and arrive at the place with the apple tree. “Now what do we do?” asks Jan.” I put the time capsule back where I found it and …”“And I go home.” “Yes.”
Tom uses his hands to dig a hole by the tree. He buries (埋) the time capsule and then stands up. Jan suddenly realizes something. “Tom! I want to give you something from the time capsule.” “I don’t want anything. It’s more important for you to go home.” Jan feels sad that Tom doesn’t want something to remember her. But he’s right. The important thing is to get home. “I’m never going to forget you, Tom. Thanks. You’re a real friend.” “Bye, Jan. Look for me in the future. Promise?” “I promise.”
Then he turns and runs back to the trees. Jan watches him disappear (消失) into the trees. A sudden flash (闪光) of lightning illuminates (照射) the scene (场景) followed by a loud crash of thunder. Jan looks around and sees her house. She’s back in the garden of her house in Hampton Street.

36.The structure of the passage is ________.
A. B. C. D.
D
Jan lies in bed, looking at the photos on her phone. She looks for a long time at the picture of her parents and then smiles when she sees the photo of Tom in the living room. Then she goes to sleep.
A loud noise wakes Jan up suddenly. She looks at the alarm clock. It’s five o’clock. Then she hears the noise again. It’s thunder. Then she hears a different noise. It’s the sound of something hitting the window. She gets up and goes to the window. She can see Tom standing outside in the rain. He’s shouting at Jan, telling her to come outside.
Jan gets dressed, puts on her coat and goes downstairs quietly, trying not to wake up Tom’s parents. She meets Tom outside. “What are you doing, Tom?” “The storm,” he says. “it’s the same storm as Thursday night. Let’s go to the tree. Maybe you can go home!”

Dear headmaster,
I’d like to recommend Mike for the Best Teenager Award.
Mike is in Grade 8. He is the tallest boy in my class. He often smiles and never says a bad word about others. Among all his subjects, he likes Physics best.
Mike likes making friends and travelling. Last weekend, he visited some places of interest in Wuxi with his friends. He is also crazy about DIY. He can make fruit salads and often helps others repair broken things.
Mike would like to be a social worker when he grows up because he wants to help more people in need.
I think Mike has all the qualities to be the Best Teenager. I hope you can agree with me.
Yours faithfully,
Liu Tao
