Do you know anything about lightning? What makes it? When do lightning strikes happen?
Lightning strikes happen when ice and water in clouds rub (摩擦) together and cause atmospheric (大气层的) changes. When this happens, it produces static electricity (静电). Lightning can strike inside the clouds. It can also strike between a cloud and Earth—this kind is more dangerous for people.
Lightning can be very dangerous. Every year, lightning hurts people because it can start big fires or because it can get to 28,000 degrees. Every year lightning hits about 1,000 people in the United States, and about 100 of them die from it.
Lightning makes people afraid, and it happens all over the world! Scientists think that there are more than three million lightning strikes every day in the world—that’s thirty strikes every second. An American man, Roy Sullivan, was born in 1912. He began working in a park in 1936. He survived the most lightning strikes. Between 1942 and 1977, lightning hit him seven times! He didn’t die from them, although he experienced the most lightning strikes in the world. Many people see him as the luckiest man in the world!
Lightning is sure not something to play with. It can put you in danger. So, when lightning strikes, it’s best to stay inside a large building. To stay safe, do not stand under trees or power lines, on hills or near water. Also, do not lie down on the ground, or the electricity (电) may go through you and cause a heart problem.

Imagine the situation: in a cold, dark night, you are driving alone on a mountain, and you have no idea where you are. Suddenly your car breaks down and you have no mobile phone. What should you do? Well, next time take a GPS with you. This device (装置) may be able to help you. It uses satellites to find the users’ position. It can find your position within 20 metres. A GPS cannot start your car, but at least you will know where you are.
The GPS is a small radio receiver (无线电接收机). It is sometimes put into a watch or a telephone. We also find GPS devices in cars, planes or boats. Some of these devices have electronic maps, so you can know where you are. For example, they can tell you the name of the street in a city.
There are three parts of the GPS. The first part is the receiver. You can hold it in your hand or fix it into your car, plane, etc. The second part is a group of satellites orbiting (绕……轨道运行) the Earth. The third part is a network of ground stations. They are all over the world and can control the satellites and make sure they are working well. Some people think that in the future the GPS will be as common as the mobile phones. The devices will become cheaper and better. There are also new uses for the GPS. Perhaps they will become like watches. Everyone will have one and you will never be lost again.

Everyone faces difficulties in their life. Daniel Kish was born with a special eye illness and lost his eyesight before he was only 14 months old.
Soon after, however, he started to do an amazing thing. He learned to make clicks (咔哒声) in his mouth to help him move around. Kish now moves about using sonar (用声音导航). He is so good at it that he can ride a bicycle by himself on public roads.
He started the organization World Access for the Blind (WAFTB) in 2000, teaching others how to use sonar. In the interview with National Geographic, he explains how the sonar works. “When I make a click sound, it produces sound waves. These waves reflect (反射) and return to my ears. My brain then deals with the sound and turns it into pictures in my mind. It’s like having a conversation with the environment.”
Kish feels it is exciting to ride a bike using sonar, although he needs to click twice a second, much more than he usually does. “It may sound a bit dangerous to move around the world in this way,” he says. “But most people in the world are afraid of things that they imagine.
