Here are some suggestions on how to maximize your first year of college for those who will be entering it this autumn. Once you begin taking classes, keep these suggestions in mind, but most importantly, don’t forget to enjoy yourself! New People At college, you’ll get to know hundreds of new people, including your classmates, instructors, advisors, recruiters, campus personnel, etc. While it is inevitable that not everyone will become your buddy, we advise networking with as many people as you can, especially if you are new to the institution. Don’t Plagiarize (剽窃) Don’t even think about copying. One of the fundamental abilities you will be gaining at university is the ability to write. Avoid ruining the learning process by pasting words from another source. Instead, gather enough diverse sources, master suitable citation (引证) techniques, and establish your own writing schedule. You can also use one of the many tools and applications that can find instances of plagiarism in your writing. Find A Note Taking System Although taking notes on a laptop could be quicker and simpler than writing them down by hand, writing them down with a good old-fashioned pen might help you recall the lecture’s material better. To get the most out of your notes when reviewing or studying, figure out what suits you in each lesson. Meet With Your Academic Advisor On A Regular Basis Make contact with a career center and the academic counselor at your school. In your college years and future decisions, both your academic and career advisors may be extremely helpful. Additionally, attend the majority of employment fairs held in your area or on your university, whether you’re looking for jobs or just want to network with recruiters. Get To Know Your Professor In college, networking is just as important as academics. Additionally, the majority of teachers will be delighted to get to know you, offer their knowledge, and assist you as you navigate the college experience. Student Clubs/Organizations Joining a student club or group gives you the opportunity to improve your resume and have a voice in how things are managed in addition to increasing your networking opportunities and, most likely, your social circle. 36. He was standing in the centre of a group of boys, and he was telling a joke. When he reached the final line, everyone burst out laughing. Roy laughed too. A loud happy laugh. “Popular boy,” I thought to myself. My name is Daniel. I was from the north of England, but my father had been offered a better job in London, and our whole family had moved there. I was twelve and, having lost all my old friends, I felt shy and lonely at my new school. There were 33 students in my new class, and most people weren’t very interested in a shy new boy. Roy was one of the few people who were kind to me. He often invited me to join his particular group, and as a result, I started getting to know people. Roy and I became good friends. We trusted each other and we could talk about personal matters, things that were important to us. Five years later, Roy and I are still in the same class. But just under a year ago, Roy’s father was knocked over by a car. He died a few days later. The family had to move to a much smaller house in order to manage financially. Roy, who had always been very close to his father, changed completely, becoming silent and moody. He had always been a clever, hard-working student but now he seemed to lose all interest in his work. He started losing friends. These days, Roy and I saw each other from time to time, but we were no longer close. About three months ago, a group of us were playing football together after school. Having left something in the cloakroom, I went inside to get it, and found Roy going through the pockets of people’s coats. In his hand he had a wallet — and I knew it wasn’t his! My mouth fell open and I just looked at him. Roy went bright red.” I’ll put it back right now,” he said, and he did so. I turned round and walked out without saying a word. I really hoped that Roy would explain why he had been stealing, but instead he started avoiding me. At the same time, small amounts of money started disappearing from students’ lockers. I wondered if the thief was Roy but decided not to say anything to anyone. I hope it wasn’t him. Last week our school had a big fair in order to raise money for a charity. It was very successful and by the end of the day, we had made about $500. Our class teacher, Mr White, came and chatted to a group of us that included Roy, and held up a box for us to see. “There’s $500 in here,” he said with a smile. But to our surprise, the next morning, we were told that the money had been stolen. Mr White had left the box in a classroom for a few minutes, and when he came back it had disappeared. The head teacher asked anyone who thought they might know something about the theft to come to him. This weekend, having thought about the situation for a while, I decided to ask Roy about the theft, and this morning I went to see him. Roy was out, and I went upstairs to his bedroom to wait for him. It was a cold day and his jacket was lying on the back of a chair. I put it on and put my hands in the pockets. I could feel a lot of paper notes and I pulled them out. It looked as if there was about $500 there. I was so surprised that I just stood there, holding the notes in my hands. At that moment, the door swung open, and Roy walked in. 41. What was the author’s first impression on Roy? A. He was confident and amusing. B. He was shy and lonely without friends. C. A friend in need is a friend in deed 【答案】41. A 42. D 43. B 44. C 45. 根据第一段中“I remember the first time I met Roy. He was standing in the centre of a group of boys, and he was telling a joke. When he reached the final line, everyone burst out laughing. Roy laughed too. A loud happy laugh. “Popular boy,” I thought to myself.(我记得第一次见到Roy的情景。 故选A。 根据第二段中“Roy was one of the few people who were kind to me. He often invited me to join his particular group, and as a result, I started getting to know people. Roy and I became good friends. We trusted each other and we could talk about personal matters, things that were important to us.(Roy是少数几个对我好的人之一。 根据第三段中“But just under a year ago, Roy’s father was knocked over by a car. He died a few days later. The family had to move to a much smaller house in order to manage financially. Roy, who had always been very close to his father, changed completely, becoming silent and moody.(但就在不到一年前,Roy的父亲被一辆汽车撞倒了。 根据第四段中“Having left something in the cloakroom, I went inside to get it, and found Roy going through the pockets of people’s coats. In his hand he had a wallet — and I knew it wasn’t his! My mouth fell open and I just looked at him. Roy went bright red.” I’ll put it back right now,” he said, and he did so. 根据第五段中“Last week our school had a big fair in order to raise money for a charity. It was very successful and by the end of the day, we had made about $500.(上周我们学校举办了一个大型的义卖会,目的是为慈善机构筹款。 根据第五段中“The head teacher asked anyone who thought they might know something about the theft to come to him.(校长要求任何自认为可能知道这起盗窃案相关情况的人,都去找他。)” 通读全文,尤其根据第一段中“I remember the first time I met Roy. He was standing in the centre of a group of boys, and he was telling a joke. When he reached the final line, everyone burst out laughing. Roy laughed too. A loud happy laugh. “Popular boy,” I thought to myself.(我记得第一次见到Roy的情景。 、第二段中“Roy was one of the few people who were kind to me. He often invited me to join his particular group, and as a result, I started getting to know people. Roy and I became good friends. We trusted each other and we could talk about personal matters, things that were important to us.(Roy是少数几个对我好的人之一。 、第三段中“Roy, who had always been very close to his father, changed completely, becoming silent and moody.(Roy,这个和父亲一直很亲近的人,完全变了,变得沉默寡言,喜怒无常。)”以及倒数第二段中“Roy was out, and I went upstairs to his bedroom to wait for him. It was a cold day and his jacket was lying on the back of a chair. I put it on and put my hands in the pockets. I could feel a lot of paper notes and I pulled them out.(Roy出去了,我上楼到他的卧室等他。 C。 C In the words of Professor Stephen Hawking, artificial intelligence will be “either the best, or the worst thing, ever to happen to humanity”. Technology of Tomorrow Forum wants to hear your thoughts on AI. Is it our greatest human achievement so far? Or is it the biggest threat to our existence? Millennium butterfly Thanks to AI, I’ve got my own super-smart personal assistant built into my phone. She always has an immediate answer for any question I put to her, and even uses my answers to learn more about my preferences. It used to feel like 60 percent of my time was spent researching new restaurants. In contrast, my PA only needs a few seconds to find the right place. Every recommendation she gives me is great since she can predict if I will like a particular restaurant. And speaking of hanging out, I’m hoping that self-driving cars are available soon. I’ve been taking driving lessons for over a year, and still haven’t got my licence. Self-driving cars can learn to drive in the same way that we do, and can make judgements based on information. And as they won’t be susceptible to human error, they’ll certainly be a lot safer. The only thing is that there might be a few machine-learning problems when the first cars hit the market, so perhaps I’d better learn to drive first. Still, I do think that developments in AI will on the whole make doing day-to-day things a lot easier. Popkid The technology you’re using and enjoying today is a basic form of AI which can’t think independently without programming. Of course, it could be very useful to have a more advanced form of AI — a truly independent form of artificial intelligence, capable of exercising its own judgement, could help us solve many of the world’s problems. But have you ever thought about the risks? After all, why would an independent form of AI need to consider the opinions and desires of humans? We could be seen as a “small” inconvenience that’s in the way of a solution to a bigger problem. If we’re lucky, AI might think we’re valuable enough to keep around. If not, it might wipe us all out! Even if that doesn’t happen, there are other risks. Millennium butterfly, you say how great it would be to have self-driving cars, but what about all the taxi drivers who would lose their jobs? They would just be among the first victims of AI. Nearly every job is potentially at risk in the long run. Even journalists are now being replaced with technology that can write basic news reports. As it is, almost 50 per cent of US jobs are at risk from automation in the next 20 years. The truth is that none of us is prepared for the challenges of AI. Pink_haze Machine learning is something we have come to accept as a part of our modern world. I believe most of the value of AI lies in its capacity to analyse and interpret vast amounts of data, which means it can even solve problems that are too challenging for human experts. But while super-intelligent AI could be the biggest leap forward in human history, if it goes wrong or falls into the wrong hands, it could also be the most dangerous. However, AI is not going to go away. We have no choice but to embrace it and regulate it. One thing I think we all agree on, though, is that saying “My AI did it!” won’t be any excuse for illegal or immoral behaviour! 46. The passage starts with Professor Stephen Hawking’s words to show that ________. A. artificial intelligence is the best thing ever to happen B. artificial intelligence is the worst thing ever to happen C artificial is the biggest threat to our existence D. artificial intelligence has the most influential impact on us 47. According to Millennium butterfly, which is NOT the benefit that the technology of AI brings to him? A. It can help him to find the accurate answers as quickly as possible. B. It can help to research new restaurants with 60% of his time. C. He can find his favorite restaurant in no time with it. D. It can predict what he wants and cater for it. 48. Why will self-driving cars be much safer based on the passage? A. Because self-driving cars are available in no time. B. Because self-driving cars are driven in the same way that human-driving ones. C. Because human-driving cars might have a few machine-learning problems when hitting the market. D. Because self-driving cars are not easy to make the mistakes that human drivers tend to make. 49. It can be inferred from Popkid that ________. A. there are advantages and disadvantages of AI to us. B. you don’t need to be worried about the risk of AI as it is useful to us C. Taxi drivers will benefit a lot from AI in the long run D. Most of us have been prepared for the challenges of AI 50. What’s Pink_haze’s attitude towards AI? A. Useful and meaningful. B. Wonderful but immoral. C. Useful but potentially dangerous. D. Illegal and immoral. D 47. B 48. D 49. A 50. 根据第一段中“In the words of Professor Stephen Hawking, artificial intelligence will be “either the best, or the worst thing, ever to happen to humanity”. Technology of Tomorrow Forum wants to hear your thoughts on AI. Is it our greatest human achievement so far? Or is it the biggest threat to our existence? 根据“Millennium butterfly”部分第一段中“It used to feel like 60 percent of my time was spent researching new restaurants. In contrast, my PA only needs a few seconds to find the right place. Every recommendation she gives me is great since she can predict if I will like a particular restaurant. 根据“Millennium butterfly”部分第二段中“And as they won’t be susceptible to human error, they’ll certainly be a lot safer. 根据“Popkid”部分第一段中的“Of course, it could be very useful to have a more advanced form of AI — a truly independent form of artificial intelligence, capable of exercising its own judgement, could help us solve many of the world’s problems. But have you ever thought about the risks? After all, why would an independent form of AI need to consider the opinions and desires of humans? 以及“Nearly every job is potentially at risk in the long run. 故选A。 根据“Pink_haze”部分第一段中“I believe most of the value of AI lies in its capacity to analyse and interpret vast amounts of data, which means it can even solve problems that are too challenging for human experts. 以及“But while super-intelligent AI could be the biggest leap forward in human history, if it goes wrong or falls into the wrong hands, it could also be the most dangerous. C。 D How long does it take for a rose to bloom? For a boy to grow into a man? How long does it take to prepare your favorite meal? How long does it take to build a house with a firm foundation, or travel to your favorite destination? My point is that good things take time. The best things in life not only take time, but are worth waiting for. Why, then, do we yield to the temptation of instant satisfaction? A news piece pops on our Facebook, and we only read the headline. We prefer articles that we can skim in 2 minutes but they never teach us anything new. We get annoyed when the waiter takes too long to bring out our food or get angry when traffic keeps us for an extra 10 minutes. We give up when it takes too long to achieve a goal or never start at all. The best things in life take time, so train yourself to wait patiently for things to come. Patience is something we can all work on. However, too much patience causes procrastination and inaction which can keep you stuck in a bad place for a really long time. Passively waiting with no plan of action is not the same thing as having the virtue of patience. When you think of the virtue of patience, think of Aristotle’s virtue theory and the golden mean… the golden mean is the perfect midpoint between two extremes. On one extreme is the lack of patience which causes impatience, intolerance and rashness— on the other extreme is indifference and inaction. The perfect middle point is a virtuous patient individual who knows how to wait until it is the right time to act. So, to achieve your dreams, you have to have just the right amount. Lots of people have “too much patience” or are comfortable passively waiting and end up wasting time. They are willing to put up with long commutes, bad relationships and unfulfilling jobs just to pay the bills…… passively waiting keeps people right where they are, stuck in the status quo(现状). Living the life you’ve always imagined and achieving your dreams will require you at some point to say “enough is enough!” In other words, to lose some patience and give yourself a push to achieve your dreams. If you really want to change your life and achieve your dreams, you will need to work at it. The first step may be when you finally say to yourself-enough is enough! And the right amount of patience will move you closer. Be patient enough with yourself so you keep going. Don’t be so patient with yourself that you put off for tomorrow what you could do today and you will achieve your goals. 51. The author asks several questions to________. A. show a boy takes a long time to grow into a man B. highlight it may take a long time to prepare a favourite meal C. show his interest in building a house with a firm foundation D. present his concerns about his observing in his life. 52. What is the closest meaning of the underlined words “yield to” in Paragraph 2? A. stick to B. give in to C. hold back D. hand over to 53. What can be inferred from the passage? A. We tend to read the news quickly so that we can learn something new. B. We may fail to be angry if we wait a long time for our food. C. Too much patience is necessary sometimes for us to achieve our dreams. D. Too much patience or too little of patience is harmful for to achieve our dreams. 54. According to the author, why do some people prefer to wait passively? A. Because they have too little patience. B. Because they have too much patience. C. Because they are stuck in the status quo. D. Because they will have to put up with bad relationship. 55. What is mainly discussed in the passage? A The significance of proper amount of patience. B. The definition of patience. C. The importance of patience. D. The way to achieve the goals. 51. D 52. B 53. D 54. B 55. Don’t be so patient with yourself that you put off for tomorrow what you could do today and you will achieve your goals(对自己保持足够的耐心,这样你才能坚持下去。 故选A项。 In the fall of 1985. I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University, aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere. Twenty-one years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell. My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait. Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopt and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To lay eyes on him was fantastic—and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No. 3. In 2003,I gave birth to another boy. You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 8. Our home was a complete zoo — a joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant taking as few as one class each semester. The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit, But I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives. In 2007,I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree! I am not special, just single-minded. It always struck me that when you're looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when you're in the midst of it, it just seems normal. Everything you want won't arrive in your life on one day. It's a process. Remember: little steps add up to big dreams. 56. Our home was a complete zoo — a joyous zoo.(可想而知,要照顾四个8岁以下的男孩,我的生活有多忙碌。 She was busy yet happy with her family life./Although she was too busy, she was happy. 根据文章第五段“The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit, But I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives.(最艰难的时刻,是我因上课无法陪伴孩子而心怀愧疚。 Setting an example for them to follow through their lives. 根据文章第二段“But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait.(然而就在我上大学的一年后,奶奶患上了癌症。 可知,作者选择退学照顾生病的奶奶,这说明作者是个善良的人;再根据文章第四段“But I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant takting as few as one class each semester.(但也从未放弃过自己的梦想。 可知,作者一直努力实现自己的梦想;再根据文章第五段“The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit, But I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives.?(最艰难的时刻,是我因上课无法陪伴孩子而心怀愧疚。 I think she was strong-willed and kind/ great, because she worked hard to realize her dream and also look after others./I think she was a woman of determination and kindness, because she made efforts to make her dream come true and also show kindness to others. Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit Dear Sir, I’m Li Jin, a senior three student from Chenguang Middle School. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Jin 【答案】例文 Dear Sir, I’m Li Jin, a senior three student from Chenguang Middle School. 36. Would-be college students. B I remember the first time I met Roy. C. He was unsatisfied with his father. D. He was always laughing at others by telling jokes. 42. What can be inferred from paragraph 2? A. Daniel and Roy both were not popular in the class. B. No one was kind to Daniel as he was a shy new boy. C. Daniel and Roy became good friends as they both were shy. D. Daniel adapted himself to the new class with the help of Roy. 43. What completely changed Roy’s life according to the author? A. Roy’s family moving to a much smaller house. B. Roy’s father dying in a car accident. C. Roy’s father becoming silent and moody. D. Roy’s friends keeping distanced from him. 44. Which of the following statements is True? A. Daniel went into the cloakroom to see if Roy went through the pockets of others’ coats. B. On seeing Daniel, Roy was embarrassed and put the wallet in his own pocket. C. $500 was collected to help those who were in need. D. The head teacher asked Daniel to see if it was Roy who had stolen $500. 45. What might be the best title of the passage? A. Daniel and Roy’s friendship B. Daniel’s story C. Roy’s story D. A friend in need is a friend in deed C In the words of Professor Stephen Hawking, artificial intelligence will be “either the best, or the worst thing, ever to happen to humanity”. A. artificial intelligence is the best thing ever to happen B. artificial intelligence is the worst thing ever to happen C. artificial is the biggest threat to our existence D. artificial intelligence has the most influential impact on us 47. D How long does it take for a rose to bloom? So to achieve your dreams, you have to have just the right amount. 54. According to the author why do some people prefer to wait passively? A. Because they have too little patience. B. Because they have too much patience. C. Because they are stuck in the status quo. D. Because they will have to put up with bad relationship. 55. What is mainly discussed in the passage? A. The significance of proper amount of patience. B. The definition of patience. C. The importance of patience. D. The way to achieve the goals. In the fall of 1985. 56.
