B Most of us have secret gardens where we can relax, stretch and refresh. For me, since I can remember, that world has been books. As with many children, books first drew me in through their illustrations. My love of colour was stimulated by the original Babar books; my understanding of lines comes from the Our Wullie annuals, or Tintin. Later, the words became more important to me. I was not happy at boarding school, but I loved spending time in its library. Books became my private garden. So it was no surprise that I studied English at university. Today “English literature” is in sharp decline among senior-level exam subjects and some universities are ceasing to offer it. This is a quiet cultural disaster, one in which we are stealing their best future from our children. It may not lead directly to a good-paying office job. But it has given people like me a reliable friend. Later, work and family made it harder for me to read. As a journalist, I had many deadlines, and as a mother, I often had little time because of children and money worries. Sometimes I read while standing on a moving bus or train. It was difficult, but I kept reading. Every year, I still looked forward to new books by Ian McEwan and many other writers, such as Penelope Fitzgerald and Donna Tartt. Each book gave me a new world to explore and a new friend to meet. At this point, readers may ask whether I would have been better off living — meeting and talking to fleshy actual humans or playing sports. Well, I don’t spend all my life on a sofa with books all around me. There seems to be time for chat and laughter. But without deep and repeated reading of writers who millions of other people have already found friendly and helpful, my life would just be so much narrower and meaner. The great books remain, across most of a lifetime, my secret garden. 24. What first attracted the author to books as a child? A. The plots. B. The titles. C. The pictures. D. The reviews. 25. What does the author think of “English literature”? A. Spiritually comforting. B. Academically difficult. C. Economically rewarding. D. Practically advantageous. 26. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the author? A. Her busy life. B. Her favorite writers. C. Her reading on trips. D. Her insistence on reading. 27. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph? A. Analyze a current trend. B. Defend her point of view. C. Show readers’ misunderstanding of books. D. Prove the importance of real-life activities. C Want to lose fat? There’s one method scientifically proven to work: eating a little less food than your body needs to fuel itself each day. Do that, and your body starts using its energy reserves — its stored fat — to make up the deficit. It sounds straightforward. You dutifully keep track of the calories in every meal to make sure your daily intake stays less than your fixed limit, but the number on your weight scale never changes at all. It’s frustrating and disheartening. But there’s good news: you’re not to blame. Recent scientific findings suggest it’s almost impossible to count calories with any degree of precision, which explains why trying to lose weight by calorie counting is so hard. It’s not bad maths that trips most of us up, though. Generally, unless you diligently log every ingredient before you eat, humans just aren’t very good at recalling exactly what was on their plate, let alone the handful of snacks they ate without thinking. Given all that, it’s no surprise that studies suggest the average person underestimates their daily consumption by around 30 per cent (roughly 600-750 calories), or about 10 digestive biscuits. The very idea of working out calorie amounts is problematic. And that’s before we even consider the effect your individual biology can have. For instance, a 2023 study tested the outcomes of giving people a high-fibre diet, designed to feed their gut microbes With growing microbial communities in their guts, the scientists found that the participants in the study lost a little bit of weight — without eating less or feeling hungry — because they were absorbing fewer calories from their food. “That means, depending on what you eat and how many microbes are thriving (旺盛繁殖) in your gut, some calories are used by you, while others feed the microbes.” says Professor Rosa Brown, a co-author of the study. If all this is starting to make you think that calorie monitoring might be off the menu, you’d be right. 28. What does the underlined word “deficit” in paragraph 1 mean? A. Reserve. B. Nutrition. C. Shortfall. D. Balance. 29. What makes it hard for dieters to count calories? A. Complexity of calculation procedures. B. Lack of tracking approaches. C. Absence of scientific evidence. D. Inaccuracy of intake records. 30. What can we learn from the 2023 study? A. Eating less means losing weight. B. Calorie absorption may vary. C. Fibre reduces people’s hunger. D. Food calories determine body weight. 31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Forget the Strict Diet. B. Simplify Your Calorie Log. C. Adjust Your Diet Structure. D. Skip the Dietary Math. D Scientists have long thought raindrops contribute to the wear and tear of protective coatings, because they physically damage the coating as they slide down it and have acidic components that can chemically degrade it. Now, new research suggests there may be more to this destruction than previously thought. Water drops can become electrically charged as they slide across smooth surfaces, such as plant leaves, insect wings, building walls and window glass. When these electrified drops fall onto coated metals, they generate micro-discharges capable of breaking through protective coatings like Teflon and damaging the underlying metal, according to a study published on August 26 in the journal Nature. To investigate this, study co-author Hans-Jürgen Butt, a physicist at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Germany, and co-workers dropped water drops onto different insulating (绝缘的) materials, including plant leaves, PVC boards and glass, and allowed the liquid to run down and fall onto Teflon-coated copper (铜). Applying only a few dozen drops resulted in no visible wear. But when the team applied 3,000 electrified drops, a powerful microscope revealed a surprising amount of damage. The water had eaten through the Teflon and left the underlying copper uneven. By contrast, dropping water directly onto the coated copper caused no corrosion (腐蚀). The researchers suggest that as the water drops slide down a surface, they acquire a tiny positive charge. When a drop approaches the coated metal, the electrical potential difference between the drop and the underlying metal can exceed 1,000 volts. Since commercial coatings on cars and ships are typically thicker than the Teflon coating used in the experiment, these charged drops pose no immediate danger to modern vehicles, Butt says. However, the process could help explain why protective coatings on historical structures fail after long periods of time, leaving the material underneath exposed to the elements. Corrosion in the United States is estimated to cost the country more than $2 trillion per year. 32. What is the newly identified factor contributing to metal corrosion? A. The acidity of raindrops. B. The charge of raindrops. C. The coatings’ components. D. The impact force of raindrops. 33. How do the researchers draw their conclusion? A. By analyzing earlier papers. B. By comparing different damages. C. By interviewing other physicists. D. By weighing the water drops. 34. What does the author mainly talk about in paragraph 3? A. The design of an experiment. B. Properties of a substance. C. Analysis of an experiment. D. The mechanism of corrosion. 35. Why is the $2 trillion annual cost of corrosion mentioned? A. To stress the significance of the research. B. To prove the effectiveness of coatings. C. To present the difficulty of the research. D. To show the unavoidability of corrosion. Around 90 percent of people worldwide are right-handed, while left-handed people make up only about 10 percent. For decades, scientists have been confused by the imbalanced distribution of hand preference in humans. ____36____ It has long been listed as one of the world’s top unsolved scientific puzzles by Science. Recently, Chinese researchers have finally made key progress in this field. A research team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences carried out controlled experiments on 437 mice to explore the formation of hand preference. ____37____ Without one-sided training, the mice showed no natural tendency toward either paw, keeping a balanced 50-50 using rate. Yet small amounts of single-sided training could completely change their habits. After only 5 to 7 times of unilateral (单侧的) training, the mice formed stable paw preference that lasted for over a month. The experiments also found a huge difference between left and right paw habits. ____38____ It resisted change far better than the left-side preference. Even with long-term reverse training, most trained mice refused to switch their dominant paw. This animal experiment result highly matches the common right-handed dominance in human society. Based on the data, researchers raised the “acquired conservative hypothesis (假说) of right preference”. ____39____ Instead, it is gradually fixed through repeated single-hand use in early childhood. The universal right-handed social environment further strengthens this habit. Daily tools and educational routines are all designed for right-handed people, pushing most individuals to stick to right-hand usage. ____40____ Females tend to keep their acquired hand preference more firmly, while males are relatively more likely to experience small changes in dominant hand habits during growth. Besides, external living environment also plays a supplementary (附加的) role in shaping people’s final hand-using habits, making the population’s right-handed advantage extremely stable. A. Gender is also an influential factor. B. Hand preference is not mainly an inborn trait. C. Right preference is extremely conservative. D. They recorded the mice’s paw-using behaviors. E. Few studies focused on animal hand preference before. F. Training intensity determines animals’ daily behavior changes. G. People have long wondered why right-handedness dominates. I once borrowed a book called I Like Me! from my cousin. I looked around nervously. The storm had arrived much earlier than expected. Dark clouds covered the sky, and huge waves surrounded our small boat. For a moment, we felt completely lost on the endless water. Noah and I had been best friends since kindergarten. We used to spend almost every day together. However, things had changed recently. Noah joined the school basketball team, and he started spending more time with his new teammates. He ate lunch with them and worked on projects with them. We didn’t argue, but we were no longer as close as before. Still, when I invited him to go sailing on the lake one weekend, he smiled and agreed. I thought maybe this trip could bring us back to the old days. But the storm ruined our plan. The wind became stronger. Noah quickly lowered one of the sails, but the boat was still moving too fast. The wide main sail over our heads bit into the storm, grasping the wind’s power, sending us racing forward and pushing the side of the boat ever closer to the water. I held the tiller (舵柄) tightly, trying my best to keep the boat in the right direction, but it threatened to pull itself from my hands. If I let go, I would lose control of the boat. “No one knows where we are!” Noah cried. His voice sounded frightened. “We’ll be okay!” I replied, although I was not sure myself. I looked ahead, but the land was still nowhere to be seen. My arms were becoming weak, and I could hardly hold the tiller anymore. “We have to lower the main sail now!” I shouted. Noah looked up and understood what I meant. He stood up carefully and reached for the sail. Just then, a huge wave came toward us. The boat was lifted high into the air and then crashed down. Noah fell heavily onto the floor of the boat. Paragraph 1: I shouted desperately, “Noah, are you alright?” ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: We finally returned home, safe and sound. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $这是高三英语听力测试,请看听力部分第一节。 Would you like to come to my place for a coffee? C 25. A 26. D 27. 根据第二段中的“As with many children, books first drew me in through their illustrations.(和许多孩子一样,书籍最初是通过插图吸引我的。)” 根据第三段中的“It may not lead directly to a good-paying office job. But it has given people like me a reliable friend.(它或许不能直接带来高薪办公室工作,但它给像我这样的人提供了一位可靠的朋友。)” 根据第四段中的“Later, work and family made it harder for me to read. As a journalist, I had many deadlines, and as a mother, I often had little time because of children and money worries. Sometimes I read while standing on a moving bus or train. It was difficult, but I kept reading.(后来,工作和家庭让我很难读书。身为记者,我有很多截稿日期;作为母亲,孩子和经济压力常常让我时间紧张。有时我在行驶的公交车或火车上站着阅读。虽然艰难,但我坚持读书。)” 可知,本段主要介绍尽管生活忙碌,作者依然坚持阅读。 【27题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段中的“Well, I don’t spend all my life on a sofa with books all around me. There seems to be time for chat and laughter. But without deep and repeated reading of writers who millions of other people have already found friendly and helpful, my life would just be so much narrower and meaner.(其实我并没有一辈子都待在身边堆满书的沙发上,我也好像有时间聊天欢笑。但如果没有深度反复品读那些已被数百万人认为友善且有助益的作家作品,我的人生只会变得更加狭隘贫瘠。)” 可知,作者针对读者可能存在的质疑进行解释,捍卫自己热爱阅读的观点。 C Want to lose fat? C 29. D 30. B 31. 根据第一段中“Want to lose fat? There’s one method scientifically proven to work: eating a little less food than your body needs to fuel itself each day. Do that, and your body starts using its energy reserves — its stored fat — to make up the deficit.(想减肥吗?有一种方法被科学证明是有效的:每天吃的食物比身体需要的食物少一点。这样做,你的身体就会开始利用它的能量储备——储存的脂肪——来弥补deficit)”可知,减脂的原理是摄入的食物比身体每日所需供能的量少一点,身体就会动用储存的脂肪来补上这个“不足”,deficit指“亏空、不足”,与shortfall“短缺、差额”意思一致。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“Generally, unless you diligently log every ingredient before you eat, humans just aren’t very good at recalling exactly what was on their plate, let alone the handful of snacks they ate without thinking. Given all that, it’s no surprise that studies suggest the average person underestimates their daily consumption by around 30 per cent (roughly 600-750 calories), or about 10 digestive biscuits.(一般来说,除非你在吃之前认真记录下每一种食材,否则人类根本不擅长准确回忆起自己盘子里究竟有什么,更不用说那些不假思索吃下的几把零食了。考虑到这一切,研究表明普通人每天会低估自己的摄入量约30%(大约600-750卡路里),也就是大约10块消化饼干,这就不足为奇了)”可知,节食者难以计算卡路里是因为摄入记录不准确。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中“With growing microbial communities in their guts, the scientists found that the participants in the study lost a little bit of weight — without eating less or feeling hungry — because they were absorbing fewer calories from their food.(随着肠道中微生物群落的增加,科学家们发现,这项研究的参与者体重减轻了一点——没有少吃或感到饥饿——因为他们从食物中吸收的卡路里减少了)”以及第五段““That means, depending on what you eat and how many microbes are thriving (旺盛繁殖) in your gut, some calories are used by you, while others feed the microbes.” says Professor Rosa Brown, a co-author of the study.(“这意味着,取决于你吃什么以及你肠道中有多少微生物在旺盛繁殖,一些热量被你利用,而另一些则喂养了微生物。”该研究合著者罗莎·布朗教授说道)”可知,卡路里的吸收量可能因人而异、因食物而异。 【31题详解】 主旨大意题。根据全文,尤其末段“If all this is starting to make you think that calorie monitoring might be off the menu, you’d be right.(如果这一切让你觉得监测卡路里该被放弃了,那你是对的)”可知,全文核心是论证精准计算卡路里几乎不可能,靠数卡路里减重行不通,呼吁大家不用做这类饮食相关的卡路里计算,所以D项“Skip the Dietary Math.(别再做饮食算术了)”适合作本文的标题。 D Scientists have long thought raindrops contribute to the wear and tear of protective coatings, because they physically damage the coating as they slide down it and have acidic components that can chemically degrade it. 32. B 33. B 34. D 35. By contrast, dropping water directly onto the coated copper caused no corrosion 根据第三段“The researchers suggest that as the water drops slide down a surface, they acquire a tiny positive charge. When a drop approaches the coated metal, the electrical potential difference between the drop and the underlying metal can exceed 1,000 volts.(研究人员认为,水滴沿物体表面滑动时会获得少量正电荷。 根据最后一段中的“Corrosion in the United States is estimated to cost the country more than $2 trillion per year.(据估计,美国每年因腐蚀产生的经济损失超过2万亿美元)”可知,文中提及腐蚀带来的巨额年度成本,是为了强调这项腐蚀成因研究的现实意义与重要价值。 Around 90 percent of people worldwide are right-handed, while left-handed people make up only about 10 percent. 36. G 37. On the other hand, others oppose robot‑based healthcare services. They believe robots cannot offer emotional care and fear robots may make serious mistakes at work. As far as I’m concerned, robots can be applied in hospitals, but they should be used carefully and wisely under human guidance. 词汇积累 利用:use → take advantage of 观点:opinion → view 反对:oppose → object to 严重的:serious → severe 2. As far as I’m concerned, robots can be applied in hospitals, but they should be used carefully and wisely under human guidance. I hold the view that robots can be applied in hospitals, but they should be used carefully and wisely under human guidance. 1】On one hand, some people advocate using robots, regarding them as a powerful tool to reduce medical staff’s burden and make medical treatment more convenient and effective.(运用了动名词短语作宾语以及现在分词短语作状语) 【高分句型2】They believe robots cannot offer emotional care and fear robots may make serious mistakes at work.(运用了省略连接词that的宾语从句) 第二节(满分25分) 67. “I can’t see land!” Noah shouted over the strong wind. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 Paragraph 1: I shouted desperately, “Noah, are you alright?” He lay motionless for a second, then slowly propped himself up, wincing in pain. His knee was badly bruised, yet he forced a weak smile to comfort me. Without hesitation, he struggled to his feet and worked together with me to lower the main sail. Fighting against the fierce wind and rough waves, we cooperated perfectly just like we used to. I steered the boat steadily while Noah checked our condition constantly. Gradually, the storm calmed down, and a faint outline of the shore appeared in the distance. Paragraph 2: We finally returned home, safe and sound. Tired and soaked, we sat quietly, breathing a huge sigh of relief. The scary experience washed away the estrangement between us. Noah apologized for ignoring me lately and promised to spare more time for our friendship. I was deeply touched. This dangerous sailing trip taught us a precious lesson. True friendship never fades easily, and shared hardships always bond hearts tighter. 词汇激活 行为类 ①忽视:ignore/overlook ②消失:fade/vanish 情绪类 ①疲惫的:tired/exhausted ②感动的:touched/moved 【点睛】【高分句型1】Noah apologized for ignoring me lately and promised to spare more time for our friendship.(运用了动名词作宾语) 【高分句型2】Tired and soaked, we sat quietly, breathing a huge sigh of relief.(运用了现在分词作状语) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
